Although Ashley + Alex went to high school together, their courtship didn’t begin until “re-meeting” at a lake house party after college. Soon this playful duo was making plans to spend the rest of their lives together (be sure to read Alex’s adorable proposal that even included a card from their pup!). After reading their interview, I knew they’d have fun and sweet Southern details galore. Boy, was that an understatement! Just based off their koozie caption “sure as cornbread goes with greens, you’re the answer to my dreams!” I wish I’d been a guest at their big day! Then hearing how the entire crown at the ceremony enthusiastically responded with with “WE WILL!” after the preacher asked “Who would bless this marriage?” I am so thankful Reese Moore was there to capture all the joy since I wasn’t invited! ; )

I love these ruffly bridesmaids dresses — they even have a bow!!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. My mom and I walked into a local bridal store in Irmo, SC (Jo-Lin’s Bridal) and my dress was hanging on the mannequin. I told the ladies in the store that THAT would be my dress, because it was perfect for dancing. After trying on a few others, I was finally able to try on “the one.” After what seemed like hours of staring at myself in the dress, we decided this was defiantly THE ONE.

We decided to do a first look to have a few moments for just the two of us before the ceremony began. It helped to calm our nerves and get excited about the ceremony. It was a very intimate moment, with our closest friends (my bridesmaids, mom, and mother-in-law) watching from the windows inside. We were also able to get more pictures of the two of us together before the party began!

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? No, but the preacher asked both sets of parents and the crowd, “Who would bless this marriage?” and the crowd responded with an enthusiastic “WE WILL!” What an exciting and awesome feeling to start our married life together. We were able to look at the crowd of family and friends and see all the faces of people who loved and cared about us and our marriage.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Yes, Ruth 1:16-17 was read by my grandfather, who is known as “Papa.”

On the lawn at the reception, guests could play on corn hole boards, which were made by the groom and decorated with our favorite football team, the Carolina Gamecocks. We gave away hot boiled peanuts as the favor, along with homemade dog treats, glow sticks, sparklers, and huggers (koozies). Our huggers said “Sure as cornbread goes with greens, You’re the answer to my dreams.” We had monograms everywhere: my dress, the cake, the programs, signs, etc. From the wraparound porch at the reception, guest could enjoy a beautiful atmosphere of the creek with a backdrop of Charleston.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We invited a friend from our home church in Lexington to travel with us to the wedding in Sullivan’s Island. He played the guitar and sang “God Gave Me You.” The words perfectly describe how we feel about each other. At the reception, Alex picked our song. He chose “Hey Pretty Girl” by Kip Moore, because he said the first time he heard it, all he could think about was me. We have loved the song ever since it became a hit and he knew I would love to have our first dance be to “Hey Pretty Girl.”

Our cake was not only beautiful, but delicious. Molly from D’lish on Daniel Island created our cake. It was white tiers with small pearl accents on the bottom of each tier. On the second tier, Molly created our monogram in a circle with a pearl border. We had three favors for the guests: chocolate with chocolate buttercream, red velvet with cream cheese buttercream, and carrot with cream cheese buttercream. Our cake sat on a sweetgrass basket made by a very talented lady at the market in Charleston.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The groom and groomsmen wore cotton boutonnieres. I wore my sorority pin by my heart on the inside of my dress. My grandfather read a Bible verse and blessed us during our ceremony. My dad and our ring bearer wore seersucker suits with pink bow ties. Our flower girl went barefoot down the aisle. We served Firefly and Lemonade during the cocktail hour. At the cocktail hour, the guests were entertained by a gospel choir. We served BBQ, macaroni and cheese, rice, ribs, fried chicken, and many other Southern delicacies. My dad and I started with a slow dance and surprised the crowd with a shag to “Carolina Girls.”

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We attended high school together in Lexington, South Carolina, but it wasn’t until June 2010—after we had both graduated from college and returned to our hometown—that our romance began. We “re-met” at a mutual friend’s lake lot on Lake Murray while celebrating Alex’s birthday.
Tell us all about the proposal! Alex gave me two cards and a bag full of gumballs to help me celebrate my 25th birthday. Since we had a long-running joke that Alex would propose with 25-cent ring, I suspected it was all a setup. The first card was from our Golden doodle pup Jax, but the second card instructed me to root around in the bag of bubble gum carefully. After some digging, I uncovered a ring box—with a genuine diamond ring inside—and I knew Alex’s proposal was the real deal. After asking “Does my dad know?” and receiving an affirmation, I said “Yes!”

How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 180
Describe your wedding flowers. Our wedding flowers were very light and simple. I carried a bouquet with white hydrangeas, pink garden roses, and pink mini roses. The bridesmaids carried bouquets with white hydrangea. The father of the bride wore pink mini roses with his seersucker suit and the groom and groomsmen wore cotton boutonnieres. At the reception, we decorated with white hydrangeas and baby’s breath.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Our favorite details of the wedding were the simple, laid back decorations. We loved the cotton and burlap touches around the ceremony and reception. I also love monograms so adding the simple detail of the monogram to everything was great!
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My something borrowed and old was my grandmother’s brooch that I attached to my bouquet. My something blue was my monogram sewn into the skirt of my wedding dress. My something new was a diamond necklace that Alex gave me before the ceremony began.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? We wanted to make sure everybody was happy! While planning, we worked very hard to plan so that each guest would have a great time, no matter where they were or what they were doing!
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Our photographer! Reese Moore was absolutely wonderful. She was very professional while making me feel like she was my best friend. She was so easy to work with and took ALL the pictures we talked about before the actual day. I can’t imagine our wedding day without her there.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The most memorable moment from our wedding day was standing in front of the packed church and hearing the crowd yell “WE WILL” after asked who would bless our marriage. We could feel the love for us as a couple through each loud yell in the church! What an amazing feeling knowing so many people care about you!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Sit back and enjoy the ride. It all goes by so fast, so enjoy every moment. These are the times you will look back on and think about how loved you are by all your family members and close friends.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are loving everything about it. It is great to have somebody to come home to every night and just talk about your daily adventures. We are looking forward to buying land and building a house together in the near future. As one of the my kindergarten students said, “Love is when you follow someone around and you don’t know why.”

If there’s one thing we love almost as much as Southern weddings around here, it’s Southern food. Elizabeth and Eric’s love story began with a date over “heavenly” macaroni and cheese, and with a start that delicious, is it any surprise that we’re enjoying their wedding today? Their formal Tennessee wedding was full of the dreamiest pink roses, Memphis-inspired food and drinks, and some lovely hot pink details–I’m loving Elizabeth’s Kate Spade heels and bright manicure, especially!

Thanks to Annabella Charles for sharing Elizabeth and Eric’s wedding with us!

We met in May of 2010 when I worked at Southwest Tennessee Community College. One morning, at an employee meeting, I was telling one of my co-workers that there were no good guys out there and I was ready to call it quits on dating. He mentioned that he had a friend that would be the “perfect guy” for me and that we should talk. After we had talked about him for a while, I asked him to have his friend call me. A few days later, I received a call from Eric, and we instantly connected in our first conversation. We agreed to meet a few days later, where we got to know each other and bonded over some heavenly macaroni and cheese. It was love at first sight!!

Isn’t Elizabeth’s bouquet lovely? The texture is so unique, and I love the little succulents peeking out.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We decided to do a first look prior to the wedding to have an intimate moment to ourselves.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Yes. My favorite part of our vows was how much we meant to one another.

If you’re a fan of pink roses, you’re going to LOVE Elizabeth and Eric’s romantic reception!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? My husband’s specialty drink was simply Southern: bourbon and coke. We named it the Old Southern on our drink menus and served all of our drinks with striped paper straws. The invitations were classic and elegant. We had them printed on gold luxe, shiny paper and had a laser die-cut machine make intricate, swirled designs on every envelope and invitation. Getting married in Memphis, we definitely had to include some pulled pork barbecue. We dressed them up with a mango barbecue sauce and Asian slaw to give everyone a taste of our Hawaiian proposal and our Memphis roots.

Tell us all about the proposal! What better place to get engaged than in Hawaii! On our first full day in Honolulu, we were going to brunch at the Kahala Resort with Eric’s family, when he decided to show me around the hotel. He took me around the dolphin pool and along the beach, when we came upon a peninsula on the edge of the property. He took me out to the end to show me the ocean and the famous Diamond Head Crater. We were talking about how beautiful it was when he started to tell me how much he loved me. He got through three words before I started bawling, because I knew what was happening. After he finished his speech, he got down on his knee and presented me with the ring. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect occasion for one of the most special moments of our lives!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. It was a five-tiered cake decorated with white pearls and pink sugar flowers. My favorite cake flavors are in the citrus family, so we had white cake with alternating lemon and orange layers. It was divine! The groom’s cake was fashioned after a stack of antique books with an open cigar box on top. Since my husband’s grandfather smoked cigars and we had a master cigar roller at our wedding, it was a perfect match, and a great way to honor his grandfather’s memory. We also wanted people to have some dessert options other than our cakes, so we had mini churros, sfogliatelle (Italian cream puff) and mini cannolis.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Time! It seemed like we always had to meet with vendors and pick out every little detail. All of that was extremely time consuming and, with both of us working, we had to plan everything far in advance to make our meetings work. Many times, we had to meet over our lunch breaks or had to ask to meet after work. But, we got past it and were able to put together an amazing wedding despite those constraints.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Honestly, I think we had a dream team of vendors. Everyone worked together perfectly and the wedding was flawless!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Everyone crying during the vows.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? I can’t wait to start our life together by decorating our new home. There’s a lot of work to do, but it will be fun doing everything together and making our house a home. It will be nice to share everything with one another and have my best friend with me all the time.

Anyone who has been in a long-distance relationship can attest to how challenging it is. I’m in that boat myself, and sometimes, it is just plain hard. That is one of the many reasons I’m so encouraged by Emily and Tripper’s love story. After years of distance, they were engaged in the city where they first met and planned a gorgeous wedding in Emily’s hometown. Now that they’re happily married, they’re thrilled that they finally get to see each other every day. I can’t help but feel overjoyed for them–what a testament to “love never fails!”

Many thanks to Melissa Schollaert for sharing Emily and Tripper’s wedding with us!

Tell us all about the proposal! We planned a trip to Nashville in September 2011 to visit Tripper’s sister and brother-in-law and to go to a Vandy football game. Coincidentally (or so I thought), the Dores were playing Ole Miss that weekend, which marked the four-year anniversary of our first date. On Saturday evening after the game, Tripper and I had dinner at our favorite restaurant, Virago, and planned to meet his sister and brother-in-law at the Hutton Hotel bar for post-dinner drinks. When we got to the hotel, Tripper led me up to the penthouse suite, which was filled with candles, flowers and mementos from throughout our relationship. Getting engaged with the backdrop of the Nashville skyline was the perfect way to bring our relationship full circle!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Although I was initially hesitant about a first look, our photographer convinced me that it was necessary in order to get portraits and bridal party photos with natural light. We did our first look in a small park in Atlanta with no one else around. It was a perfect, intimate setting. Looking back, I am so happy we made that decision, because were both much more relaxed going into the ceremony.

Like many brides, I wanted romantic, lush flowers in soft colors and dreamed of peonies. Since peonies weren’t available in September, we used lots of hydrangeas, ranunculus, garden roses and spray roses to deliver the same full effect. My favorite flower is the gardenia, so we included those in my bouquet, in my hair and in the floral garland runner on the head table.

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Our Old Testament reading was Tobit 8:4b-8, and our New Testament reading was Colossians 3:12-17.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We were married in a cathedral and felt the music needed to match the formality of the venue, so we chose traditional songs played on the church organ. My dad walked me down the aisle to Clarke’s “Trumpet Voluntary” and we recessed to “Hornpipe” by Handel. For our first dance, the band played “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” by Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons. It was the perfect song for us because it started off slow, but the tempo picked up so we could have a little fun! The band’s last song of the night was Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.”

I just loved the overall effect when walking into the reception space. Atmosphere was extremely important to me and creating the right mood was at the top of my mind throughout the planning process. As I told our vendors, I wanted the reception space to feel warm and “glowy” and I felt strongly about choosing a venue where all our guests could be in one space together. I was thrilled with how our vendors executed my vision.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The food at our wedding was Southern-influenced and included shrimp and grits and fried green tomatoes. Tripper grew up in Louisiana and has a passion for Gulf oysters, so to bring a little Louisiana flair to our Atlanta wedding, we brought in over 1,000 Gulf oysters and an award-winning shucker straight from New Orleans!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Our cake was delicious! Since Tripper doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth, we skipped a groom’s cake and instead offered two tiers of flavors in the wedding cake–red velvet with cream cheese frosting and vanilla genoise with lemon and raspberry mousse.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Tripper and I met in college at Vanderbilt University. We had many mutual friends, but somehow, we didn’t connect until our senior year. Our first date was to the Vanderbilt vs. Ole Miss football game, followed by dinner at Rotier’s–a perfect Nashville evening! After college, I moved to Atlanta and Tripper moved to Charlotte. Two years later, he started business school in Charlottesville, VA and I moved to DC. Needless to say, our love story contains many tanks of gas and hours on the phone.
When did y’all get married? September 22, 2012
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? Around 250
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I lived in DC during our engagement and went wedding dress shopping both there and in my hometown of Atlanta. Although I didn’t know what style dress I wanted when I got engaged, I quickly realized that a lace gown with a fit-and-flare silhouette felt the most “me.” At every appointment, I kept going back to the same lace Marissa dress, so I knew it was the one.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My something old was a religious medal that has belonged to my grandmother since she was a child. My something borrowed was a garter that my best friends and I each wear on our wedding day, embroidered with our monogram and the date. My something blue was a Bonnie Blue flag pin given to me by Tripper’s aunt. My something(s) new were the dress, shoes and diamond earrings that were a wedding day gift from Tripper. And I had a sixpence in my shoe!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? I lived in DC for the majority of our engagement and Tripper was in business school in Charlottesville, so it was a challenge to work with all of our vendors in Atlanta while being long-distance from both them and from each other.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? That’s tough! We were lucky to have a fabulous group of vendors who worked wonderfully together and made things easy on us. I am so happy we chose Melissa Schollaert as our photographer because she captured every moment and detail of the day beautifully. We love reliving the memories through her images.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Seeing each other for the first time! That, and the amazing party on the dance floor.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? This sounds obvious, but when your wedding day finally comes after many months of planning, make sure you enjoy it together! Tripper and I made a deal beforehand that we would stay within an arm’s length at our reception. We knew from attending other weddings that the bride and groom often get pulled in different directions and get caught up talking with friends and family. It was important to us to have shared memories of the night.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are settled down in Louisiana and enjoying married life! After four years of dating long-distance, it is a thrill to wake up in the same place and be together every day.
