For Southern Weddings V9, we asked a few of our wisest, most creative, and just plain fun friends how they celebrate their anniversaries. From simple takeout dinners served on wedding china, to trips back to honeymoon destinations, and everything in between, their ideas spanned every timeframe, budget, and tradition we can think of. Whether you’ll be celebrating your first anniversary or your fifteenth this year, we hope these ideas inspire you–we’ll be sharing a new one each Sunday!

Every year, we try to sneak off to NYC for our anniversary, which is also where we spent our honeymoon. In late November, New York puts on its absolute best for visitors like us who love the Christmas season. We make lists throughout the year of restaurants we want to try and places we’ve still not visited, and we try to cross as many off the list as possible on each trip. We like to rent the same AirBNB brownstone in Brooklyn; we always feel so at home there.

In our family, we love to celebrate, especially our anniversary. Maybe it’s because I come from parents who divorced early, or maybe because my husband comes from parents who have been married for almost 42 years, but we place a high value on our marriage, and making it to another year has always been a big deal to us. So, even when we were broke newlyweds, we found inexpensive ways to make those early anniversaries feel special. Typically, that involved some kind of getaway – an overnight stay in a cute city or a road trip exploring a new place – but it was always just the two of us. Our favorite would have to be our ten-year anniversary, which we celebrated in Italy – a dream of ours since we were dating.

The first wedding anniversary is paper, so I usually say a photo shoot is a must for couples.

Andrew and I are old souls, so anniversaries are usually simple and sweet in the Bosse home. A typical anniversary can include a homemade breakfast (Andrew does most of the cooking over here and can make a mean heart-shaped pancake!), a long love letter or two (I’m a woman of many words, so cards are where I tend to shine!), and plenty of quality time with one another. Whether it’s listening to our first dance song and twirling around the living room, reminiscing over our wedding photos, or sharing a piece of chocolate cake like we did on our wedding day, we find a lot of joy in the simple things each anniversary.
