Southern Weddings

Now that I’m engaged (and getting married in September!), little details like bridesmaid bouquets and the endless shades and types of roses are surprisingly interesting.  As Emily knows, I’m really picky when it comes to flowers, and usually gravitate to rose-only bouquets, but there was something about the Gatehouse Flowers bouquets at Brooke + Nathan’s Alabama wedding that made me do a double take.  While I love the eclectic mix of roses and greenery, what I really love is the sophisticated pinks and peaches, a nice alternative to the ever-popular all-white bouquet.  What perfect contrast to the attendants’ coppery Coren Moore dresses, purchased at Bella Bridesmaid in Nashville.  Naturally, I’m a sucker for the ultra-glam embellishments on the bride’s striking Melissa Sweet gown.  Photographer Joy Marie really captured the fun, carefree atmosphere of the couple’s wedding day, without missing any of the sweetly Southern details.

How did the two of you meet?  Tell us your story.  In the Spring of 2005 on the Auburn University campus I took a seat next to Nathan on a bench, and we had a long conversation.  I had seen him around campus and thought he was handsome. We even had a class together (along with about 300 other students), but we never spoke again on campus except for the occasional hello. I never realized I was often at his sister’s house and that he lived in the other half of the duplex, nor did I know he had asked a friend about me. Two years later, we ran into each other again one night in Huntsville, where I had just moved after graduation. Nathan had just gotten back into town from working in Africa.  He said, “Hey you’re the girl from the bench!” A month later on St. Patrick’s Day, we had our first official date and were inseparable from then on.  He left to work in Africa in April and, despite the distance we stayed together. He returned to the U.S. battling Malaria and a very serious autoimmune disorder. For quite some time, it was difficult for him to walk, but none of that stood in the way of our relationship. It just made us stronger.

Describe the proposal. Nathan has been dropping hints that made me start to think he would propose on my birthday. Although he made sure I had the best birthday ever, there was no proposal. I laughed about how silly I was to think that and decided it would be awhile before he popped the question. The following day, he offered to spend the entire day shopping with me and buying me a new outfit rather than hunting (his big hobby) on the last day of the season. I thought it was weird, but didn’t give it much thought. When we returned to my house from shopping, he went in first and came back out with a rose. I thought that was strange, but still hadn’t caught on, but when I walked inside to a room filled with candlelight, flowers, chocolate-covered-strawberries and champagne, I started to get it. He got down on his knee and told me the last two years had been the best of his life before asking if I would be his wife? He took me into other rooms in the house, where I found other things waiting for me, including an issues of Brides! He had a dinner reservation at my favorite restaurant and we headed out to celebrate.
Three adjectives that describe the day are:
Fulfilling, carefree and euphoric.
What was the design inspiration for your wedding?
I wanted two different atmospheres for the ceremony and reception. I wanted the ceremony to be super romantic and to have an element of tranquility, which I felt the classical music really brought in. For the ceremony flowers, I used Victorian influences and our minister really brought our guests into the ceremony by asking them to be more than spectators but to be actively engaged as we committed ourselves to each other. When it was time for the reception I wanted brighter fall colors, music that would cover all our guests interests, and great Southern food. We served sweet and mashed potato bars, beef and pork tenderloin, and amazing shrimp and grits!
What was your favorite design element of your big day?  I loved that I did it all and made it all happen! Every single detailed was important and carefully planned out. From the Japanese lanterns to the ring bearer’s pillow of flowers and everything in between, I couldn’t have been more pleased. I also loved the branches on our table centerpieces and the orchids our florist attached to them. I picked the best wedding vendors and they all came through and did a phenomenal job.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Our first dance song, “Free” by the Zac Brown Band!  It hadn’t even been released on the radio so it wasn’t a common song, but it was very special for us since we had listened to it at several special moments in our relationship. Nathan actually picked the song and our band, Nationwide Coverage, learned it for us.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: The first time I looked for my dress, I took way too many people and went to far too many stores. I was so exhausted that, by the last store, I could barely focus. My sister fell in love with a dress there, though, and almost cried when I put it on, but I wanted to take some time to think about everything. A few weeks later, I selected another dress, but wasn’t really in love with it. I simply was trying to stay within my price range. I later went back to the store, Bella Couture, where my sister had fallen in love with the dress. I tried on the same dress and I knew it was the one. One of my bridesmaids was with me to help and we were both so excited. I couldn’t wait to call my little sister and tell her I had gotten “the one!” Ironically, the name of the dress was Brooklyn by Enzoani and my name is Brooke.

I know Emily Post (and our own Emily) are very clear that guests should not, under any circumstances, wear white to weddings, but this Georgia-based couple specifically asked friends and family to don white to their summer wedding.  And you know what?  I wouldn’t have thought an all-white wedding could work, but Meredith + Rodney show us how a colorless celebration can be modern, fun and effortlessly chic.  Jeremy Harwell’s crisp images of the couple’s backyard wedding only highlight the clean color palate and all-white accents coordinated by planner, Meredith Webb of a A Legendary Event.  While it’s certainly bad form to take the bride’s signature color (unless otherwise instructed by your hosts!), it’s the unanimous office decision that the guests’ attire at all detracted from the Meredith, in a sophisticated Priscilla of Boston gown.  The square, rhinestone-studded confection from The Frosted Pumpkin added the perfect touch of glamour to this otherwise clean, summery wedding.  Like this idea for your own warm weather nuptials?  Be sure to visit the photographer’s blog!

How did the two of you meet?  Tell us your story.  We met at work  We both worked for a company called Dixie Homecrafters. After about a year, Rodney decided to pursue.  We started dating in March of 2003 and the rest is history.
Describe the proposal.
The proposal, if you want to call it, that was almost not a proposal at all.  Rodney asked me to set up some appointments to look at rings.  I set up the appointments and we went from store to store gathering information.  At one store, I saw the ring that I had sketched years ago but had never seen in any store.  Rodney noticed my excitement and he went up the counter, paid for the ring and told them to size it.  I asked what he was doing and he said, “I’m buying the ring; don’t you want it?”  I said yes, of course!  We left the store to go have lunch, and then we went back to pick up the ring.   He put the on my finger and asked me if I liked it.  When I asked if this meant we were engaged, he nonchalantly said yes.  And that was that!
Three words that describe your wedding:
Unforgettable, beautiful and fun.
What was the design inspiration for your wedding:
The design was inspired by our home. I wanted to incorporate something for Rodney because the groom often gets forgotten in all the planning, so I chose to have everything done in white since it’s his favorite color.  I even asked all of the guests to wear white!
What was your favorite design element?
My favorite design element was the all-white everything and the beautiful tents.
Tells us about finding your wedding dress.
Finding a dress was simple! I went alone to Priscilla of Boston and tried on about five dresses, then narrowed it down to two before settling on one.  I bought the dress about two weeks after we were engaged!

Heaven.  I am officially in my wedding heaven.  Humor me here while I indulge in my gold, black + white wedding fantasy.  Kristen + Grant’s reception at The Cloister Clubroom on St. Simons Island in Georgia is literally dripping with luxe crystal details and gold accents, but what I really like is how the happy couple gave their elegant affair a sophisticated update with chic feather accents (did you see the plume on their four-tiered confection from Natasha Zeal of the Sea Island Culinary Team?) and subtle black details.    And the lighting – oh the lighting! – is really spectacular.   (Note to self: must add this wedding to my inspiration folder.)  Emily is going to make fun of me if I don’t stop gushing, so, for your sakes, I will, with just one question: this wedding really is something, right?

Describe your wedding flowers: The chapel had such a beautiful, simple elegance that we decided not to use any flowers. Instead, we used two tall arrangements of white ostrich plumes by the altar.  Rose at the cloister did such an amazing job on the flowers! On the head table, we had a trumpet vase filled with lush, fragrant all-white garden arrangements featuring hydrangea, stock, lisianthus, vivianne spray roses and heiress garden roses with plumes of white ostrich feathers rising from the center. The look was completed by the addition of hanging Swarovski crystals, beaded crystal votives and cut crystal candlesticks along the entire length of the table.  In my bouquet, I carried white heiress garden roses accented with feathers and Swarovski crystals. The bouquet was wrapped in silk and pinned with Grant’s great grandmother’s vintage brooch.
Describe your wedding cake:
The cake was gorgeous! So gorgeous, in fact, that we had it displayed in the center of the room. It was so close to the dance floor, I was afraid a guest might fly into it while dancing! I knew I wanted to include the ostrich feathers and the crystals in the cake and the Sea Island culinary team did such a great job designing it!  It had huge ostrich plumes coming out of the top.  We wanted to create a chandelier effect with crystals on the cake, so we hung Swarovski crystals from the top layer. The cake was also covered in sugar crystals which looked so amazing against the candlelight and crystals.
Were there any wedding traditions or new ideas you included in the wedding?
Everyone knows that I love a good costume party, so we decided to have a “fancy dress box” on the dance floor. We had a vintage trunk filled with boas, top hats, gloves, canes, mustaches, fake jewels and feathered headbands. It really took the party to a whole new level! Everyone was dressed in costume by the end of the night.  We had so much fun and the pictures are priceless.  In addition, I asked all of the guests to wear silver, black or gold and the women to wear floor length gowns. It really added to the glamour of the night. All of my friends and family looked like movie stars and the pictures were amazing.  Also, Grant’s uncle Zeke (the judge who married us) and his wife Linda had a beautiful vase made out of the glass that Grant stomped on at the end of the ceremony. It is now proudly displayed in our living room as a wonderful reminder of our wedding day.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?
Grant insists his favorite part of the wedding was seeing me walk down the aisle!  For me, it was when Grant and I snuck down to the boat dock to be alone for a few minutes in between courses.  It was very dark and there was one single chandelier hanging from the tree above us. The wedding planner had left the 40’s music from the cocktail reception playing on the terrace, so Grant and I had a single dance there under the chandelier next to the water. It was one of the sweetest, most romantic moments of my life.
Funniest Moment:
During the ceremony, Grant accidentally said “I do” before being asked!  So adorable!
Did you write your own vows?  If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line?
We both knew that we wanted our ceremony to be short and sweet! Grant was raised Jewish and I was raised Christian so we created our own ceremony in which we could celebrate the traditions of both religions. It turned out to be a very intimate and special ceremony! We had so many guests comment on how sweet and unique it was. We also had a special part in the ceremony where we honored our grandparents who had passed. I was very close to my Grandmother Haralson, so that had extra special meaning for me.
Fun Fact:
We were married on the same day as JFK and Jackie O’!
What’s next for you as a couple?  What are you looking forward to in the future?
We are really looking forward to our long-awaited honeymoon in Greece!

Congratulations, Kristen + Grant!  Enjoy your fabulous honeymoon!

This is hands down my favorite wedding you’ve ever posted. I think the bride and I must be soul sisters because it is so similar to the wedding I’m planning in Charleston, right down to the casual oyster-roast rehearsal dinner. Amazing. So much inspiration to take from this.

This is a very nice formal wedding. The decors are quite elegant, with the fabulous table settings, the exquisite flower table centerpieces, all together remarkably timeless! My favorite photo is the driveway being lit with fireworks. Great shot!
