Monthly Archives: August 2011

It’s Friday, y’all! I know you must be happier than a pig in mud for the weekend to be here, so I won’t keep you waiting. On to the Round-Up!

Marissa brought you another delicious recipe from the Newlywed Kitchen. Her godmother’s Anta Fe soup will fill up everyone’s tummies without taking up a lot of time in the kitchen. It’s perfect when you don’t want to miss any of the fun. Download a recipe card here and shoot Marissa an email if you want to submit one of your family’s recipes!

We’re so glad that y’all liked Emily’s lemonade summer inspiration board. This week, I brought you some of my favorite items that correspond to the bright color palette. These things are sure to add a zap of happiness to any Southern soiree!

Marissa uncovered another Southern tradition (and one of my favorites!) in this week’s history lesson. Learn all about the handkerchief’s original purpose here.

July held so many great weddings for us! We couldn’t fit all of the highlights and details into our Monthly Round Up, so be sure to click on the links as you scroll through Marissa’s, Whitney’s and my picks for the month!

This week’s Real Wedding Gallery is Tara + Chris. We love how these two high school sweethearts reunited at the altar for a ranch-inspired wedding.

Real Weddings are gooder than grits!

Whitney + John’s Western North Carolina wedding was lush and relaxed. I love their use of local vendors and the yummy Southern fare they served up! See it here and here.

Tory + Doug’s Virginia Gold Cup wedding was festive and fun! Guests donned their best at the horse races, sipped on mint juleps and danced the night away. See it here and here.

Meredith + John’s farm wedding was a pastoral dream. I’m still thinking about their babys breath and grapevine altar. See it here and here.

Good News

Y’all can’t pass this one up. Dior Beauty and Style Me Pretty have teamed up to bring you an amazing giveaway! Dior will send the winner one of their professional makeup artists to beautify you on your wedding day. Follow this link to find out how to enter.

Meredith + John’s pastoral wedding at their family farm in Alabama is beautiful in the most subtle and natural ways. Trying not to compete with the rolling hills and lakes as a backdrop, the couple chose floral accents that would be ethereal and natural. The wildflowers tied to the fence post with a lush velvet ribbon are a simple but beautiful detail, but I’m blown away by the babys breath and grapevine that decorate Meredith + John’s altar. And Meredith’s bouquet? Just amazing. Take a look through these photos by Stephen DeVries and you’ll agree with me!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We met when I was home from school for Thanksgiving break almost 6 years ago. I knew we would get married after we had hung out for just two nights. It took John just a bit longer to come to the same realization.
Describe the proposal. We went out to the state park to walk our dogs. We climbed up to the top of the ridge, and he proposed standing on a rock where we had sat and talked many times throughout the previous years of our relationship.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Sunny, peaceful, pastoral.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. It was the main reason we chose to get married at the farm, the biggest and most beautiful detail of the whole wedding would be this backdrop of nature. We could never have created a setting as lovely inside any manmade building. Another favorite was the fireworks display at the end of the night! It was a surprise gift to us from John’s parents, and it was spectacular.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The musicians who are friends of ours played traditional Appalachian songs before, during, and after the wedding ceremony. Also, Chef Robby Melvin prepared and served a lovely meal using local and regional ingredients, including organic vegetables, quail and Gulf shrimp. I suppose the most Southern aspect of our wedding was, again, the setting. The wedding took place entirely outdoors between the rolling hills and scattered lakes of a West Alabama farm.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I had actually seen a picture of this dress a few years ago online and always remembered it as the prettiest dress I’d ever seen. When we got engaged, I mentioned this sighting to my mother, who immediately tracked down the one and only sample of the dress still available to try on, which was in the Vera Wang boutique in Manhattan. It was a good excuse for my mom, sister, and I to visit New York. It ended up being the only dress I tried on, so it was worth the trip.

July was such a great month for Real Weddings on the blog. Marissa, Whitney and I are here to share some of the highlights from the past few weeks. Let me tell you, the photos below don’t do our Real Weddings justice! Take a look at some of our picks below, and be sure to click on the links to see everything we couldn’t include.

FAVORITE WEDDING DRESS: Whitney fell for Amanda’s lacy dress with a lovely sweetheart neckline while Marissa couldn’t stop thinking about Jeni’s Amsale dress with the pretty bow in the back. I, for one, loved Mary’s flowy Lazaro gown.

FAVORITE BRIDESMAID DRESS: Marissa and I agreed that Jeni’s bridesmaids’ striped BCBGeneration dresses were a fun and adorable choice for her ‘maids. Whitney thought that Mary’s choice of yellow and blue for her ladies was stylishly mixed and matched.

FAVORITE FEMALE ACCESSORY: We love to see coordinating bridesmaids even before the wedding! Whitney thought Bonnie and her ‘maids’ PJs were too cute. Y’all know I would never pass up a sweet hanky or an adorable pair of shoes. Mary’s accessories had me at hello. Marissa knew how I felt when she saw Heather’s lace hanky. Plus, y’all know how much she loves a monogram!

FAVORITE MENSWEAR: A good bow tie is crucial in a wedding. Whitney (and really all of us) were smitten with the striped bows sported in Amanda + Brent’s wedding. I thought the light suits and coral and white boutonnieres in Jeni + Nate’s wedding were too cute to ignore. Marissa, the monogram-lover she is, fell for the monogrammed cuffs in Mary + Austin’s wedding.

FAVORITE DETAIL: How adorable is the bridal party cutout that accompanied the bridesmaids’ invitations from Heather + Sam’s wedding? Whitney thought so, too, when it came to picking details. Marissa loved seeing Amanda + Brent’s beagle get some love before the ceremony. I, however, was crazy for the collection of quilts that guests at Bonnie + Brent’s wedding sat on. How perfect for a beach wedding!

FAVORITE BOUQUET: We’re always a fan of monotone bouquets done right. Bonnie’s peonies were Whitney’s pick. I love bright, fully bloomed peonies, so Jeni’s bouquet was automatically added to my favorites. Marissa loved Heather’s beautiful blooms mixed with mint and wrapped in twine.

FAVORITE SWEET: I love when family contribute to a wedding. Bonnie + Brent’s four cakes were baked by her momma and granny. Marissa picked Jeni + Nate’s three perfectly buttercream-frosted cakes on sweet cake stands and Whitney loved Amanda + Brent’s tiered cake with blue hydrangeas.

FAVORITE PHOTO: We’re all about sweet moments at Southern Weddings. Whitney loved the kiss Heather + Sam shared while wrapped up in their “Just Hitched” sign. I thought Bonnie + Brent’s photo of the two dancing was lovely you can see the love between the two while the sun streams around them. Marissa also picked a fun moment from Heather + Sam’s wedding. Who could pass up a good celebration?
