Monthly Archives: July 2010

Happy Fourth of July weekend, y’all!  Right now Katharine’s on her way to Ohio for her first bridal shower, and Emily’s off to Maine, and Lara’s probably in the office laying out V3 and looking through pretty submissions, but we all hope you’re celebrating with family, friends, and fireworks.  Lots of love from the SW crew!

What are y’all up to this weekend?

P.S. You can see more of this perfectly patriotic wedding on the Ritzy Bee blog.  It was coordinated by Maria and photographed by Kate Headley, both SW favorites!

There are lots of big things just around the corner here at Southern Weddings.  Emily’s big sis is getting married this August, I’m tying the knot in September and, oh yeah, Volume 3 hits stands on October 5.  We can probably guess which of the three you’re most excited for, and, knowing what we do about this next issue, we certainly don’t blame you.  Gorgeous photography above by Larissa Cleveland.

While we’re well on our way to making this our biggest and best issue yet, we want to make it even better!  And we need your help.

Photographers, planners, florists, wedding experts extrordinaire: Do you have print-worthy images you just know need to be in the next issue of Southern Weddings?  (C’mon, we know y’all have some gems hiding in those porfolios.)  We want to see them!

What we’re still looking for:

  • Bouquets: Styled and positioned like this.  (Seriously, we only can feature bouquets that look like this!)
  • Bling:  We want your glitziest + and most glamorous ring shots.  (Actually, I’d like to wear them, but I guess I’ll settle for swooning over your pretty pictures until I tack on some more bling this September.)
  • Beaus: Photographed some handsome gents lately?  We’re looking for shots of your most Southern men + their most Southern accessories.  Bowties, boutonnières – you name it, we’ll take it!

Email me!  Consider this your official invitation to flood my inbox :)

Missed Lara’s Twitter call this week?  Our editor’s also looking for a few images of her own.  What does she want?  Epic images:  details, portraits, anything that makes you stop and swoon!  Email howdy at iloveswmag.com, subject line “V3.”  Limit: 5 images.  (Pay attention, folks: only submissions that follow these directions will be considered!)

And, last by certainly, not least: advertising partners!  (Y’all know how much we love our sponsors.)  We still have a few prime ad slots left in this next issue.  The deadline to get in on the action is August 1.  They’re going fast!  Make sure you don’t miss your chance to be a part of the best magazine we’ve ever created.

Questions?  I’m your go-to-gal.  Shoot me an email!

Happy Fourth of July weekend, y’all!

Katharine

Luckily for Mary + Greg, the stunning surrounds at Claxton Farm didn’t need much sprucing up to be wedding-ready, but we do love the DIY details they included.  I’m particularly a fan of the faded red and blue bunting, and I can’t get over the clever seating chart or the fact that they topped the evening off with s’mores — yum!  M7 Event Solutions took care of the catering, with Aria Floral putting together the arrangements and Oh, Darling! Photography behind the camera.  Lastly, Mary’s LulaKate dress needs a little shout-out of its own.  Be sure to read below and check out Mary’s Weddingbee archives for more DIY details!
Describe your wedding flowers: Jessica at Aria Floral was simply amazing. Her floral design brought me to actual tears.  Everything was exquisite. Our florals were all local to North Carolina, and included jack in the pulpit, green blueberries, scabiosa pods, oats, hosta lilies, loosestrife, flowering dill, wild grasses, roses, poppy pods, obedient plants, fern fronds, Queen Anne’s lace, peonies, pink yarrow, and lots of moss. Jessica and her team went above and beyond anything we could have imagined. The flowers were incredible.
Describe your wedding cake: Two words: cake buffet! When we visited Short Street Cakes, an amazing cake shop in Asheville that uses only locally-sourced ingredients for their Southern-style cakes, we knew we wouldn’t be satisfied with only one flavor.  We had a two-tier “Strawberry Shortstreet” (a strawberry sour cream poundcake with fresh strawberry cream cheese frosting) for cutting, and six more delicious cakes for our guests to sample: triple chocolate ganache, banana pudding, coconut, blueberry lemon cream, white chocolate raspberry and Mexican chocolate.  Several of the cakes completely disappeared before the Claxton Farm staff could even box up a small piece for us to taste!

What was the most memorable moment about your wedding day? The ceremony. Even though we worked diligently on our wedding details for months, the ceremony – hands down – was the most memorable part of the day.  Being surrounded by love and support from so many people from all facets of our lives was simply indescribable.  Everything else was icing!

Did you write your own vows?  If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We opted for very traditional vows. For us, there was something incredibly powerful in the ritual of repeating the words that so many couples have said before us.

What’s next for you as a couple?  What are you looking forward to in the future?  I’m hoping to finish my PhD in the next year-and-a-half, and Greg looks forward to settling back into his work as the lead designer at Inside Wisconsin Sports magazine.  And we hope to move back South at some point!

Thanks for sharing, Mary + Greg!  We hope you move back to the South, too!
