Southern Weddings

Monthly Archives: June 2010

Oh boy oh boy oh boy do we have a fun start to the week for y’all!  You know we’re usually real weddings all day all the time (with a few bridals and engagement seshes thrown in for good measure), but today and tomorrow we’re going to treat you to a few of the inspiration shoots that have come through our email doors.  We hope there will be a little something for everyone, regardless of your Southern wedding style (or, you know, Southern Weddings style.  Ha!).

The first comes to us from photographer Catie Ronquillo and planner Lauren Kelly.  Read on for even more details behind this fun and fashionable shoot!

From Catie:

“We took the idea of a Southern wedding and deconstructed it.  The scene was set by pulling fantastic elements such as old typewriters, iron bedframes, wooden trunks, and spools (that are typically found in Southern antique shops) into a natural atmosphere.  We wanted to rethink the vintage trend that has been working its way through the industry and modernize it into something more appealing to the bride who craves hot pink lipstick with her pin curls.  Our vision was to make the pops of color found in nature enough decoration to ensure a simply Southern wedding day without too much fuss.”

Vendors: Catie Ronquillo: photography / Lauren Kelly Events: planning and design / Angela Karr of Faces by Angela: hair and makeup / White Gown Showroom: fashion / Lafferty’s Antiques in Waco, TX (254-754-3238): props and location / What About Cupcakes: dessert / Long dress: “Barcelona” by Blue by Enzoani / Short dress: “Audry” by Stephanie James Couture

To start your weekend off right, we thought we’d introduce a few more of our lovely sponsors.  For those readers in the midst of intense wedding planning, we can’t recommend looking at our featured vendors highly or often enough.  We believe in what they do and know you (and they!) would be lucky to team up to create a beautiful wedding day.  Be sure to take a look at the “Previously” section, below, for even more reviews!

Sakura is Japanese for cherry blossom, and the bloom’s delicate, whimsical, and mesmerizing qualities are what Sakura Photo’s Lee aims to capture in her images.  Lee is based in Dallas and Miami, but would be delighted to travel to document your wedding or engagement.  You can check out recent work on her blog here or her website here!

With the plethora of calligraphers to choose from these days, it’s still easy to instantly recognize Laura Hooper’s precise, girlish script.  Perhaps best known for her often-imititated, never-duplicated whimsical custom maps, she’d also be happy to work with you on an invitation or a tote.  You can check out her three tiers of styles here and her blog here!

I was thrilled when I first stumbled across Wedding Paper Divas, because it was the first time I felt like there were gorgeous paper options available that didn’t require your first born and your left arm in payment.  Whether your style is modern or traditional, whether you’re looking for wedding invitations, bridal shower invitations, save the date postcards (so cute!), programs, or menus, you’ll find something to love on their site.  Bonus!  They also offer free proofs and free returns.  Check out Wedding Paper Divas’ website and their blog, too

I’m pretty much in awe of what Kristy Rice can create with a simple paint brush.  The images below show the fullness of her talent: from watercolor-from-life to finished invitation, she can do it all.  Kristy and the girls at Momental Designs love working up something custom for their couples, or you can choose from their wide variety of established designs.  Also, it should be noted, Kristy is one of the loveliest people you’ll have the pleasure of meeting in the wedding industry.  You can check out her site here, her blog here, her current projects here, and her Twitter here!

Asheville Event Co is a full service event planning and consulting company based in (you guessed it!) Asheville, NC.  Possibly because they live in one of the most beautiful areas around, they’re dedicated to promoting green practices in their work.  Becca and Melissa are also extremely well networked — when we needed a bouquet stat for an Asheville photo shoot last month, they immediately knew where to send us!  You can check out more of their work on their site here and their blog here.

Another huge thank you to all of our advertisers!  Happy Friday, lovely readers!

I love Kristy Rice’s artwork – it is stunning…I also agree about Wedding Paper Divas, they have some great invitations and stationery. You can easily spend hundreds of dollars or more on stationery, but with WPD you can still find something you like without spending your whole wedding budget!

Kate Headley always delivers the most beautiful portraits, and Paige + Joe’s South Carolina wedding was no exception.  Friends and family toasted the happy couple at McCrady’s restaurant, and spent the evening grooving to Mike and the MixersBranch Design Studio styled the pink and white blooms in traditional silver julep cups (love this!), and Cakes by Kasarda whipped up a totally Southern bowtie cake fit for the similarly bowed groom.  Want a little more eye candy?  Take a peek at Kate Headley’s blog post here!

Describe your wedding flowers: I started out knowing that I wanted to use my favorite flowers, peonies and hydrangeas, in a range of pinks. For the bouquets we used hydrangeas, peonies, ranunculus, sweet peas, dahlias, astilbe, and garden roses. My bouquet used lots of pale pinks and creams while the bridesmaids’ bouquets had the same flowers, but in medium to bright pinks. The boutonnieres were made with pink sweet peas and navy berries. The alter flowers and centerpieces were set in large silver footed bowls and silver mint julep cups and were made up of pink hydrangeas, peonies, garden roses, ranunculus, dahlias, sweet peas, and dusty miller.
Describe your wedding cake:
We chose to have a pie station instead of a wedding cake. We had buttermilk pie, pecan pie, and blueberry pie. We also had a groom’s cake shaped like a bowtie to match the tie that Joe was wearing that day.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?
Trying to plan our Charleston wedding while living eight hours away posed a slight challenge because we couldn’t always be down there to do things in person. We relied on email a lot and I put a lot of trust in my vendors and the staff at McCrady’s. Everything turned out just the way I wanted it. I will really miss heading down to Charleston for wedding planning weekends!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?
The most memorable moment for Joe and I was when our brothers gave toasts towards the end of the reception. Weeks later we are still laughing about what they had to say!
Did you write your own vows?  If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line?
We did not write our own vows but we did create our entire ceremony using several examples of past ceremonies that we had seen performed. Our favorite part was a reading from our favorite book “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho and was read by one of our friends.
What’s next for you as a couple?  What are you looking forward to in the future?
We just returned from a wonderful honeymoon in Sea Island, GA and are now settled into our new home in Ann Arbor, MI. Our future plans include lots of traveling, Joe finishing law school, and starting a family.
