Weddings don’t get much more rustic than Lisa + Andrew’s celebration at the University Camp in Wimberley, Texas.  The key to capturing the earthy feel this nature-loving couple was hoping for?   Bunches (and bunches!) of organic and locally-grown sunflowers, gerber daisies and wheat grass courtesy of Anosky Flowers.  The bride and groom chose an earth-tone color palette (we love the bride’s ivory Joli Bridal gown and her husband-to-be’s cream-colored suit) to accent the natural beauty of their outdoor ceremony site.  Good thing this couple is eco-friendly: wouldn’t you know it started pouring minutes before their ceremony?  We’ll be back soon with more shots from Houston-based photographer, Akil Bennett!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story.  Andrew and I met at Texas State University.  We both worked for the outdoor recreation program on campus.  We became fast friends while going on various outdoor trips.  We spent so much time getting to know each other through long car rides to the Grand Canyon and Big Bend National Park.  I considered him my best guy friend by far; it was such an easy friendship.  After a week-long ski trip to Steamboat Springs, Colorado I knew he had a crush on me but I didn’t think I felt the same about him.  The next summer, I went to work in Russia and couldn’t overcome this crazy feeling I had.  I missed him so much.  After I got back, we spent every night for the next two weeks staying up late and talking on his porch.  Then one night, he finally kissed me.  Just before graduation, I was offered a job in Maine.  It was really funny how our discussions centered not on whether or not he would be coming along with me after graduation but where the two of us would go together! I always knew we would stay together, it was just a matter of where we would be.  We were in Maine for a couple of years and tied the knot with our friends and families at University Camp where we  hadspent lots of time while we were in Texas.
Describe the proposal:  Andrew was waiting until our two-year anniversary to propose, which of course I had completely forgotten.  We planned to go backpacking for the weekend in Baxter State Park, then I got sick.  I realized Sunday morning what he had been planning and I was so upset because my sickness ruined everything.  He was still determined to propose, so we drove up Rider’s Bluff overlooking Bangor, Maine.  It was a simple and sweet proposal.
The weather on our wedding day was:
Bleak, rainy, and absolutely perfect.
What was the design inspiration for your wedding?  I wanted it to feel earthy and natural.  I try to live my life in an environmentally-friendly way, so the wedding had to go along with that feel.  We used burlap for the tablecloths, wheat grass for centerpieces, and organic, local flowers.
Favorite design element of your big day:  The cedar arbor decorated with sunflowers and paper cranes.  Andrew’s father put it together the day before our wedding and we actually got to take it home with us to Maine.  It now adorns our garden.  What wonderful memories.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress:  I found my dress in one day and never looked back.  I was back home in Atlanta, GA visiting my parents for the weekend, and my mom and I went to a small boutique in Roswell.   I found the dress on about the second or third try.  I found myself swaying and swishing back and forth and new it was the right one.  My mom insisted we try one more place.  We ended up going to a big store with way too many rooms full of dresses!  I didn’t even know where to start.  The lady asked if she could help narrow down my options and asked what my price range was, I told her under $1000.  She looked at me and said they didn’t have any dresses for under that price.  I knew right then that I had made the right decision.  The gown arrived a few weeks before the wedding.  It was so perfect that I didn’t even need to have any alterations made!

Hi ladies! We’re in love with the bridesmaid dresses, too! Unfortunately for us, they were custom designed by the bride’s friend. Lucky bride! We do know they are orange silk shantung, if that helps!

Welcome back to another spectacular Wanwisa Wednesday!

Happy New Year everyone! I’m so excited to be back and to post some design ideas that will hopefully bring some inspiration for fabulous 2010 wedding designs. It’s a new year – and today’s fresh palette inspiration jumped at me from all the Spring 2010 fashion spreads in many-a-stylish magazines out there. Aqua, it seems, is one of the biggest colors for the fashion industry this upcoming Spring and, to me, there isn’t a happier color. So here are some chic ideas inspired by the runway, translated for the aisle-way ha! Enjoy!

Top Row: delicious favor wrapping in crisp tones of aqua, blue and green {via Martha Stewart Weddings}, a chic silk strapless bridesmaid’s dress from Simple Silhouettes {via Martha Stewart Weddings}, divine invitations of swirly-elegant ivy by Tag and Co. and right below – glamorous Kendra Scott “Pie in the Sky” earrings made of Turquoise pie-shaped stones in a dangling chandelier {available via Max and Chloe}.

Middle Row: an elegant Spring centerpiece via Martha Stewart Weddings, a refreshingly sweet and simple three-tier cake also via Martha Stewart Wedding, and a classic white bouquet wrapped in aqua silk {via Martha Stewart Weddings}.

Bottom Row: Spring-perfect topiary escort card holders via Brides.com, “Summer in Paris Garden” flower girl dress by Smitherman & Barnwell via Brides.com, the perfect green-inspired cocktail – a refreshing gimlet via Martha Stewart Weddings.

Until next Wednesday! Xoxo, Wanwisa

The splash of red and yellow worked wonders at the Chambers Hotel in downtown Minneapolis where Emily + Eddie toasted their newlywed status.  The bride’s textured Watters gown struck the perfect balance between classic and edgy with its simple strapless neckline and understated black sash (one of my all-time favorite wedding day trends).  The couple’s rich chocolate cupcakes from D’Amico Catering fit right in with their modish wedding day celebration and even look tasty to a non-chocolate fan like myself!  Visit Photogen-Inc’s website for more pics of this city celebration.

Describe your wedding flowers: Eddie and I decided we wanted to save a little money by doing the flowers ourselves. I went to a whole-sale florist and, sticking with the ‘curry’ yellow color, I decided that we needed Craspedia (a.k.a. Billy Balls). From there we found complementing flowers and greens including: water succulents, yellow ranunculus, fern shoots, and dried willow. Also, we ended up having a cute church lady do my bouquet and the bridesmaids’ bouquets, but the rest of the arrangements were made by friends and family.
Describe your wedding cake: Eddie and I decided from the get-go that we did not need a wedding cake and that cupcakes would be perfect! Our caterer had many different combinations of baked-goods to choose from, which is exactly what we ended up doing. But, my Mother surprised Eddie and I with a giant cupcake to substitute for a big wedding cake. It was a wonderful surprise!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Distance! We planned the entire wedding while both of us were in graduate school in Chicago. When we would visit Minnesota for the weekend to work on wedding details we had one meeting after another.
Were there any wedding traditions or new ideas you included in the wedding?  We did not use the traditional ‘wedding music.’ Instead we used Beatles songs for the processional and recessional..
What’s next for you as a couple?  What are you looking forward to in the future? Currently we are looking forward to continuing the life we have already started in Chicago with our neurotic dog, Grover. On a personal level, I am looking forward to finishing my MA in Art Therapy.  In the future, Eddie and I are looking forward to more adventures and ridiculousness.
