I think some of the loveliest weddings are those that effortlessly combine multiple sources of inspiration, and Kristen and Kevin’s celebration is a perfect example. With the help of their florist, Botanica, they married their love for the old Florida feel of The Gasparilla Inn with their memories of Monet’s country gardens, which they had visited during their travels to France. The result was absolutely stunning, as well as so sentimental to this sweet couple. The heirlooms they incorporated into the decor added even more meaning to this special day–Kristen’s parents’ cake topper and her great-grandfather’s moonshine bottles are a few not to be missed!

Thank you so much to Divine Light Photography for sharing this lovely wedding with us!

Kevin and I first met through a mutual friend during a visit to New York City. At the time, I was working in Atlanta for the Atlanta Braves baseball team and had no plans of ever moving to the city. Five years and a career change later, New York became my new home. Kevin soon reached out on Facebook, asking to meet up. Since a girl’s gotta eat (and New York ain’t cheap, y’all), I said yes and he took me to a Yankees game. We sat first row, third baseline–he was trying to show off, and I guess it worked, because we’ve been together ever since.

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My something borrowed, blue, and old was my great grandmother’s cocktail ring, which is a blue sapphire with diamonds set in platinum. It’s one of my momma’s prized pieces of jewelry, so it was awesome that she chose it for me to borrow. My something new was a gift from my maid of honor, Lori. We lost one of our Tri Delta sorority sisters and best friends in February, so she gave me an embroidered pansy handkerchief with my and her initials. It made me feel like I had a part of Tiff with me as I walked down the aisle.

We wanted a destination-style wedding where both local and out-of-town guests could enjoy the weekend festivities. We chose the Gasparilla Inn and Club for its old world charm and sense of Southern hospitality. The town of Boca Grande (where The Gasparilla Inn is located) sits on an island off the Gulf of Mexico, giving us the seclusion we were looking for, but it also had the amenities to host an awesome party!

Describe your wedding flowers. They were AMAZING!! We wanted the flowers to look wild and as if they had been picked from a garden. The year before we got married, we visited Monet’s country cottage in Giverny, France, and were able to see his beautiful gardens and water lilies, which inspired our wedding and the flowers.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was the moonshine bar. Our florist was able to incorporate my great-grandfather’s moonshine bottles and crocks my parents had collected from Tennessee into the decor. Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine provided the libations and gave the party an extra kick!

Describe your wedding cake. Our wedding cake was very simple. We chose traditional buttercream icing and three different layers of cake: red velvet, strawberry cream, and chocolate. The cake topper was the same one my parents had used when they got married.

Tell us all about the proposal! Kevin and I had just purchased our first apartment together in the city and were making a few updates before moving in. He told me to meet him at the apartment, because a contractor had a few questions for us. I showed up, and there was no contractor in sight. Kevin called me into the guest room, where I found rose petals all over the floor and him on one knee. I freaked out and started crying, and of course, said yes. After the proposal, he surprised me with a weekend getaway to The Breakers in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did decide to do a first look because we did not want to miss our cocktail hour to do pictures after the ceremony. We wanted to enjoy the bluegrass band and play yard games with our friends and family.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? A bluegrass band, a moonshine bar, and some Hank Williams Jr. and Garth Brooks out on the dance floor!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Hire a day-of coordinator. There is so much vendor coordination and so many little details that you can’t possibly remember all of them. The best money we spent on the whole wedding was Lindsay, our day of coordinator. She kept things on time, she dealt with last minute crisis and coordinated all of the vendors helping ensure things turned out the way we envisioned. Worth every penny!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Soon after our wedding, we were blessed with the news of a baby. Kevin and I welcomed a boy, Wyatt Drummond Wenk, on April 29, 2014. It was exactly 10 months after we were married. Marriage has been full of beautiful surprises and wonderful gifts of love!

With our own long distance relationship experiences, Lisa, Kristin, and I can all relate to Sarah and Mike’s love story. We know too well the challenges being far away can cause, but also, the incredible growth it can produce in relationships! Distance absolutely can make the heart grow fonder, and these two are a wonderful example of that. Being apart from family can also be a tough, so I especially love how Sarah and Mike included their family members throughout their wedding day by including loved ones’ signature desserts on the sweets table, as well as tying the knot just around the corner from where Sarah grew up. Magnolia leaf details and hay rides around Summerfield Farm during cocktail hour round out this sweet Southern day!

Big hugs to our lovely Blue Ribbon Vendor, Robyn Van Dyke for sharing this beautiful day with us!

I wore my sister-in-law’s veil as my something borrowed. My mom’s handkerchief that she had used on her wedding day was my something blue, since it had a blue flower detail. My Maw Maw’s diamond earrings were my something old, and my something new were my shoes!

This prayer photo is so sweet, I smile every single time I scroll past it!

Y’all may not catch this “I spy,” but that adorable blonde third from the right is Mrs. Callie Pitts Davis, our friend Nancy Ray’s associate photographer!

Describe your wedding flowers. We used a wonderful florist, Stacy at The Farmer’s Wife. We were given her name by word of mouth–the only advertising they use! She was wonderful to work with and helped me make a lot of decisions along the way. Our colors were white and green, so we used hydrangeas and magnolia leaves. There were also some berries in the bouquets that added some grey/blue tones.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? We both agree that our first look was the most memorable part of the day. Being able to see each other for the first time and being able to talk about how we were feeling was special. Plus, I loved being the only one who got to experience Mike’s reaction! The day goes by so fast and can be overwhelming, and those few quiet moments with the person who matters the most were the best.

After looking at several different venues all over North Carolina, my parents told me that if I got married in Greensboro, they would make sure I got a Maxie B’s cake! I started looking in my hometown, and by chance, found our venue. At the time, they were starting to do renovations, so I had no real idea what it would look like on our wedding day. I knew it was going to be special though, because it was a few miles away from everything I knew growing up–my parents’ house, the schools I attended, and lots of loved ones. Plus, my dad loved the idea of treating guests to a hay ride during cocktail hour!

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We chose to say traditional wedding vows, keeping the ceremony simple for the two of us! I had our wedding vows written in calligraphy to display on a table in our reception area and now in our home.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We each chose a reading for our ceremony. I chose Jeremiah 17:8 and Mike chose Philippians 2:5-11. Both verses were meaningful to our relationship and what we hope for in our marriage.

Growing up in Greensboro, you have to love Maxie B’s. My high school friends and I spent our nights eating cake and talking about life in the little corner of Maxie B’s, so I knew my wedding cake would come from them. We did a pumpkin chocolate chip cake for the base and their fresh strawberry cake for the top layer. I also have some wonderful grandmas who make amazing cakes, so I asked them if they would each make their signature cakes for us and they agreed. My Maw Maw made a strawberry cake and a blackberry cake, and my grandma made a coconut cake and pound cake. More family members then offered to make their signature desserts, and it all added up to one of the most delicious dessert bars!

Don’t miss Sarah + Mike’s highlight film by Jeff Brewer!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met during our freshman year of college at NC State through Young Life. We were eventually placed on the same Young Life team and became great friends. At the end of our senior year, we admitted that there were some feelings there, but since we were going to continue to be leaders on the same team, we could not date until the end of the next school year. After we finished our time as Young Life leaders, we went on our first date, which was the rehearsal dinner of two of our close friends. We began dating that summer, and in September, Mike accepted a job and moved to Napa, California. We made trips to see each other about every other month. It was really hard being in different time zones and so far apart, but we made it work with lots of FaceTiming and emailing!
Tell us all about the proposal! Mike was back from Carolina for two weeks during Christmas, and before he got home, we talked about taking some day trips to spend time together. When he mentioned a trip to Washington D.C on New Years Eve, I thought nothing out of the ordinary. We left early and spent our day sightseeing, even though it was so cold that day. As we neared the end, Mike told me he really wanted to see the Jefferson Memorial and I disagreed–I was ready to sit in the warm car! I even said, “This had better be worth it!” as we began walking over! Once we got to the memorial, Mike sat me down to tell me he was ready to begin talking about getting married and making a plan for what our future might hold. After our conversation, he prayed for us and asked if I wanted to take some pictures. While I was turned around taking a picture, I heard Mike say my name, and when I looked over, he was down on one knee. He asked me to marry him and I said yes! We had a long car ride home full of calls to our family and friends to tell them we were engaged!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: One of the most meaningful details was our guest book. William Mangum is a local artist who lives in Greensboro, and he paints beautiful watercolors of North Carolina. He had a book called “North Carolina Beautiful” full of images familiar to both Mike and I of the state we know and love. We made a table of contents so that our friends and family could find and sign pages that were significant to them as well. There were pictures from all over the state and it was such a wonderful piece to take with us to our new home in California. Plus, William Mangum wrote a message and signed it too!
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? We both have family in the wine industry, so we were able to save a lot of money stocking our bar. Our florist also made great strides to make sure we stayed within budget. I made all of our place cards and programs.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Don’t compare. With social media, blogs, and Pinterest, there is so much out there that can help or harm the wedding planning process. Our story was so different and it was so easy to compare it to what others have. I am so grateful that I married a man who does not care about all the little details and reminds me of the real truth of what our marriage means!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are now living in Napa and are happy that we are finally living our lives together. It has been challenging, but also rewarding, to live a life where we are far away from everything we know, and it has been really fun to explore the West Coast together!

Let me start by saying that one should not take the advice of today’s bride, Morgan, and listen to their first dance song, “Swept Away” by Avett Brothers. I recommend listening while reading their interview or looking at the joy that jumps right off the screen from her smile. She is right about one thing, this song will have you crying!

Somehow, Morgan + Jason’s wedding reminds me of our very own Nicole! While it may be the the colorful pennants or the romantic twinkle lights (she’s a big fan of both), I think it’s the pure sweetness of the whole day. From the amazing red front door and green shutters on Morgan’s family farm to the adorable suspender and bow tie combo on the groomsmen, the whole day feels like one big cozy (bright orange!) sweater, even through the rain!

Big thank you’s to Lang Thomas for sharing Morgan + Jason’s sweet day with us!

Obviously, the above chicken photo had to be in this post!

As a nurse, I work one weekend a month. While dating, Jason would plan dinner every Sunday night after I got off from working the weekend, since we hadn’t seen each other in a few days. He planned to pick me up as usual and take me out to eat at my favorite fancy restaurant, Jack Fry’s. We had been trying to go there for some time, so this choice didn’t cause any suspicion. Once he arrived, he waited for me at the front door (yes, he may have waited ten minutes or so). When I came downstairs, he was standing there surrounded by candles and flowers. He pulled me in close, said all the kind and amazing words that no one can ever remember, then got on one knee and proposed! I said YES! We then went and ate our fancy dinner, called our family and friends, and headed to Garage Bar to finish the night with our favorite cocktails. Once we arrived, I was surprised by our family, dear friends from college, and even his sister Melanie, who had just flown in from D.C. It was magical. Here is a link to the photos from that night (taken by our wedding photographer Lang, who also happens to be one of our best friends).

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Originally, Jason didn’t want to do a “first look” because he wanted to see me for the first time when I was walking down the aisle. However, Jason reevaluated after watching his good friend sweat bullets and nearly pass out as his bride walked down the aisle. Jason knew it’d calm him down to see me beforehand, and we sure are glad we did it! It gave us moments together on our wedding day that we will remember forever. These moments felt slow and relaxed, allowing us to soak up that time before the wedding began. Looking back, I don’t know when we would have taken pictures if we hadn’t done a first look, since it started pouring rain right after the ceremony!

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? It’s true that no matter what happens (planned or unplanned) on that day, you are married when it’s all said and done. On our day, the weather couldn’t have been more perfect for the ceremony. Then as soon as we said “I do,” the flood gates opened and it poured rain during our reception. Of course, that wasn’t the ideal scenario, but it was indeed the happiest and most joy-filled day of our lives (storm included). So, keep on top of your lists, plan well, spend smart, be patient with your family and your soon-to-be-spouse, and rest in the fact that it’s going to be the happiest day with the people you love the most. Rain or shine!

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Two passages from the Bible: 1 John 3: 1-3 and 1 John 4: 7-12. Our desire was that our wedding ceremony would show a picture of Jesus’ love for His church to our guests.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. I walked down the aisle to “All Glory be to Christ” by Kings Kaleidoscope. During the ceremony, there was a corporate hymn, “It is Well.” I walked back up the aisle to “Absent from Flesh” by Sojourn Music. We chose these songs because the wedding ceremony is a celebration, just as seeing in Jesus in heaven will be! Our first dance was to “Swept Away” by Avett Brothers. Listen to the words in this song–you’ll cry. Promise.

Isn’t that just way too much fun?! They had a bell ringing to celebrate! Love it!

I let my friend Julie take the reigns on the design. She’s super talented, I love her taste, and I was confident that she understood the vision I had for the wedding. She used the bridesmaid dresses as a springboard and added in a few funky touches (like the purple flowers in the bouquets). My bouquet was wrapped in my Grandma Anne’s handkerchief. I never met her, but my dad says I’m made out of a very similar mold.

My favorite moment of the day happened during our first dance. If you can’t tell by the photos, it began to pour during our reception. Thankfully, we had a wonderfully huge and sturdy tent to keep all our guests cozy while they ate and mingled! However, due to the rain, the band couldn’t play outside like we had originally planned, and rewiring for them to play under the tent just couldn’t happen. This led to the most amazing acoustic rendition (with the help of their iPhones) of “Swept Away” by the Avett Brothers. All 350 of our guests surrounded us in the tent and sang along as we danced. It felt like time stood still (yes, so cheesy… I know!). I just remember looking into Jason’s eyes as we danced, almost unaware of everyone else as they watched and sang along. It was perfect.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Jason and I met through his sister, Melanie, when she began to date a friend I’ve known since grade school, Alex. Melanie quickly became my close friend as she and Alex dated, got engaged, and then were married in September 2012. Throughout this process, I got to know Jason and Melanie’s friends, as I was reacquainting myself with Louisville after graduating from Samford University in Birmingham, AL. It became pretty clear to our friends that Jason and I liked each other, so the pressure was on for him to ask me out! Once he finally did, we went on a very fancy date and it was horrible on all accounts. I’m not sure if it was the pressure we were under from friends, the fact that I liked him so much, or that it was just not the “right time,” but it was the most awkward two hours of my life (and he agrees)! We quickly and mutually decided that we were “only” friends. Fast forward 8-9 months (right after Melanie and Alex wed)–Jason asked me out again, for a second first date. Let’s be honest, I never stopped liking him, so I said yes to his invitation to go out for a burger and beer. Seven months later, he proposed. three months and three weeks later, we got married. Needless to say, the SECOND first date made quite an impression!
When did y’all get married? August 31, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 350
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. Thankfully, this was a simple process. I knew exactly what I wanted: an off-white dress with straps that was completely made of lace. My mom and I only looked for one day (I only wanted to shop with my mom, since I value her opinion most). It was the sixth or seventh dress I tried on. BOOM. Found it. The following week, my sweet Nana, dad, and 11-year-old sister, Abbie, came to see it. My Nana cried!
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We sure didn’t. We just went with the tried and true traditional vows.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Our wedding cake was a standard round double-layer chocolate cake with bourbon icing, served on my Nana’s vintage crystal cake stand. It was simple and delicious. I wish we had eaten more!
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: How to even answer this question? I’ll say the fabric pennants strung every which way across my parent’s farm. I not only love the color they added to the wedding, but I adore all the ladies that spent hours cutting, stringing, and sewing these pennants together. It was a labor of love. I am so thankful!
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! Yes! I borrowed my grandfather’s (Bumpa as we call him) handkerchief, which I actually used to wipe away tears during the ceremony. My something blue were my shoes and nails. My something old was Grandma Anne’s handkerchief around my bouquet. My something new was my wedding dress.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our venue was at my parents and grandparents’ farm in Louisville, KY. My grandparents live at the bottom of the property and my parents live toward the back. While the houses have very different layouts, they are both painted white, with green roofs and red front doors. We took full advantage of the barn (also painted to match), where we placed all the homemade pies and cakes. They were made by close family and friends. We used our canoe as the drink/beer cooler and drove the old red tractor around by the barn as a photo backdrop. This wedding only came together because of the hard work of our family and dear friends. We were blessed by the giving of so many peoples’ time as they painted, planted flowers, hung pennants, wired and strung the lights, and landscaped. Without them, this day would not have happened.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Since our engagement was just shy of four months, we didn’t have the ease that comes with lag time between all the “big decisions” made at the beginning of an engagement (like guest list and budget, etc). Even with our timeline, I still wanted to send out save the dates, so Jason and I compiled our guest list quickly. We were shooting for around 200, however, our list topped out at 400. We made it work and it was awesome, but it would be stretching the truth if I said planning for 400 wasn’t a challenge. :)
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Lang Thomas Photography. Hands down, Lang and Kate are such a talented photography duo (as well as an amazing couple and dear friends of ours). Lang not only shot our wedding, but was also a groomsman! Kate shot the ceremony and then tag-teamed with Lang for the rest of the day. We couldn’t imagine our day without them.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are loving this process of learning how to do marriage. We are so content in our little apartment near downtown Louisville. Jason and I aren’t sure what’s next, but we are dreaming and saving for whatever and wherever this next season brings us. As far as what we look forward to about married life, Jason would say spending Saturdays together (making breakfast and watching college football). I would say planning our next trip together (NYC, and hopefully a backpacking trip throughout Europe next fall).
