We know lots of y’all are wedding nerds (welcome to the club–we are too!), but I must say, there’s always something refreshing about a laid-back bride. Audrey and Ryan focused on the things that only they could do, like choosing meaningful music for their ceremony and reception, and left the rest up to the team at Le Rae Events and Design. As you can see in these pictures by Blue Ribbon Vendor Leslie Hollingsworth, everything came together so beautifully. I especially can’t stop admiring all of the pretty pastel blooms!

Thank you so much to Leslie Hollingsworth for sharing Audrey and Ryan’s wedding day with us!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We knew each other for several years before our actual first date, thanks to our interests in soccer. At the end of my freshman year of college, one of my friends came over to my apartment, and we got on Facebook. I don’t remember exactly how Ryan popped up, but when he did, I told my friend how good looking I thought he was. She proceeded to act like she was me on my Facebook and Ryan asked me on our first date. After our first date, I got scared and backed out, but we kept in touch throughout the next few years. Once I graduated and moved back home, we went on our second first date. We have been inseparable ever since.

My mom and I went to a store in Jasper, Alabama to go dress shopping. I knew the moment I tried my dress on that it was the one. It was just what I had dreamed of: form-fitting, not too big of a train, sleeveless, and lace, with just enough sparkle. Plus, it was comfortable!

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The most memorable moment for me was during the ceremony. I could not stop crying, and seeing one of the groomsmen crying in the background made me cry even more. I remember Ryan looking at me with watery eyes and smiling as he wiped my tears off my cheek. Everyone aww-ed in the background, and Leslie took a picture of the memorable moment!

Describe your wedding flowers. I honestly have no clue about flowers, so I just told Rae from Le Rae Events that I liked wildflowers and pastel colors, and she did the best job picking them out! They were beautiful!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our wedding was at a beautiful barn with a deck that overlooked a pond. My mom bought mason jars and used black chalkboard paint to paint mustaches on the jars for the men, and pink chalkboard paint to paint lips on them for the women. We also had a cute food truck that served hamburgers, wings, and french fries.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. My cousin, Adam Nichols, bakes for a living, so I told him I just wanted the cake to taste like my favorite candy: a Reese’s peanut butter cup. The cake was dark chocolate with Reese’s and a peanut butter layer inside. It was the best cake I had ever tasted! My dad got a tree stump to set the cake on, and Adam carved a heart with our names inside, which was so beautiful and went well with the theme. Adam also made some pastel flowers to place on top of the cake. For the groom’s table, we bought pies from Red’s Little School House, a local place that catered the wedding, and they were delicious!

Tell us all about the proposal! One day in March, about a year after we started dating, I had a feeling deep inside me that I could not shake, so I went to a jewelry store and picked out a ring that I knew Ryan would like. However, I decided to leave without it and wait patiently for him to ask in his own time. As the day wore on, that feeling would not go away, so I went back to the store and bought the ring. I then cooked Ryan a fantastic dinner, got down on one knee, and asked him to spend the rest of his life with me.
When did y’all get married? September 21, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? About 200
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did decide to do a first look, and I am very happy that we did. I wanted to capture the moment Ryan first laid eyes on me, and what better way to do that than a first look?
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. I did not want to walk down the aisle to the traditional wedding march. When I heard “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri, I knew that was the song I wanted. However, I also wanted everyone to hear the beautiful words, so I asked my cousin to sing (with the piano and cello in the background) while my bridesmaids walked down the aisle, and when it was my turn, the piano and cello beautifully took over. I am a Beatles girl, so I could not walk back up the aisle without “All You Need is Love” playing. Our first dance was to Eric Clapton’s “Beautiful Tonight.” I just love that song, and thought it was the perfect song to dance to with my new husband. We also asked the band to to play “September” by Earth, Wind, and Fire. Since our wedding date was September 21, the lyrics were so perfect: “Do you remember the 21st night of September? Love was changing the minds of pretender while chasing the clouds away. Our hearts were ringing in the key that our souls were singing as we danced in the night, remember how the stars stole the night away.”
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Having everyone there to celebrate the most special day of our lives with us. Our day would not have been as special without our friends and family by our side.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? I am a pretty laid back person, so I did not have many challenges. It definitely helped to have someone there to plan the wedding and get all of the details that I did not want to worry about together. I do not know what I would have done without Rae!
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? How can I pick just one detail? The whole day was full of details and our vendors did everything they could to make sure our day was the best. Le Rae Events did an amazing job moving an outdoor wedding inside, and created a beautiful aisle and backdrop. Leslie did a fantastic job capturing our precious moments of the day! I am so happy to of had them both by my side, creating and capturing my fairy tale.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Do not stress out over your day, because at the end of it, no matter what crazy situations may come, you will be married to the love of your life. Nothing other than that truly matters.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are looking forward to becoming parents. We are expecting a little girl, and could not be happier. We can’t wait to raise our family and grow old together.

2014 means a whole new year of beautiful, oh-so-Southern couples, love stories, and weddings on the Southern Weddings blog, and I can’t think of a more perfect kickoff than the lovely Alix and Jon. These College of Charleston sweethearts were married at RiverOaks Charleston–the perfect setting for their romantic, vintage-inspired wedding (and one of our beloved Blue Ribbon Vendors!). I love Alix’s amazing boho bridal style and the dreamy RiverOaks views, but the thing that really stopped me in my tracks was reading that their officiant, Alix’s uncle, also officiated her parents’ wedding. I can’t even fathom how deeply meaningful this must have felt to their entire family!

Thank you kindly to Clay Austin for sharing Alix and Jon’s wedding with us!

After dating for three years, Jon proposed on July 15, 2012. It was a Monday and I awoke at my parents’ house at 6:30 a.m. to find Charlie, our dog, bounding into my room. Disoriented, I could not figure out why Charlie was there, since I had not taken him with me the night before. Upon further examination, I noticed that Charlie had a red bow tied to his collar with a note reading “Follow the Arrows.” Outside my door, I found arrows leading me downstairs. On the way, I found a picture of Carrie, who first introduced us, a picture of the movie Waiting, commemorating the first night we met, a picture of a staircase, commemorating the night I fell down the stairs after our movie date, and other pictures encapsulating the relationship we had built over the last three years. The arrows led oddly to my parents’ laundry room. When I went in, there was a last note reading, “Just Kidding, Turn Around,” and in the living room across from me, Jon was on his knee holding a ring. Needless to say, I said “yes!”

Describe your wedding flowers. Gorgeous. They were all designed by Jennigray Hewitt of RiverOaks. She ordered them from California and incorporated RiverOaks’ own English Garden Roses from the property. The entire color palette for the wedding was very simple and neutral, so the flowers were really the only pops of color. Jennigray outdid herself by creating bouquets, boutonnieres, centerpieces, and ceremony decor from peach, cream, and pale pink garden roses, with pops of deep burgundy flowers and succulents. All of her arrangements were stunning.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? No first look for us. We wanted seeing each other to be more of a surprise, and thought waiting until that moment when I came down the aisle made it more significant.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did not write our own vows. The officiant, my uncle Dave Collings, is the pastor of Christ Church Cleveland (Ohio), so he was able to personalize our vows for us. It was very special to have him do that for us. He also married my parents, which made it even more sentimental. He did an amazing job of keeping all of our guests comfortable, and making the ceremony light-hearted, sweet, and intimate.

RiverOaks was such a unique venue and Marianne literally runs the venue out of her home (true Southern hospitality). It is the perfect Lowcountry setting, located on the Wando River out in Awendaw, with its gorgeous oak trees and Spanish moss. All of our vendors were unbelievable and great to work with, but the creme de la creme was a two-way tie between our amazing photographer, Clay Austin, assisted by his wife, Kate Austin, and all of the wonderful women (Marianne Caldwell, Laura Heuber, and Jennigray Hewitt) at RiverOaks Charleston.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: It really is difficult to pick just one thing. The RiverOaks staff ensured every detail of the wedding went off without a hitch, and they even surprised us by sending us off in style with a fireworks display. Our guests all loved the music and the cigars we provided for guests to smoke by the river, which RiverOaks coined “Puff by the Pluff.” Being with all of our friends and family made the night perfect. By the end of it, we also felt that the vendors became part of our friends and family.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We had a three-layer wedding cake from Publix. The base was white cake with raspberry filling and cream cheese icing, the middle was chocolate/vanilla marble cake, and the top tier was strawberry. We also served pies late in the evening from Sugar Bakeshop in Charleston. We included an array of fall-themed flavors: chocolate coffee caramel, pecan, chocolate pecan, pumpkin, sweet potato, and apple.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We first saw each other on August 22, 2006. It was our first day of classes as freshmen at College of Charleston. We waited across the hall from each other for our respective lab instructors to show up, though unbeknownst to us, labs were not starting until the following week. I noticed Jon’s Flogging Molly t-shirt (which he still wears today) and we struck up a brief conversation about our mutual interest in the band. I had, more or less, rolled out of bed to get to lab, and was wearing bright red sweatpants and a less than flattering t-shirt. Regardless, after this brief encounter with a Charleston girl, Jon remembers thinking, “I think I am really going to like college.” Fast forward to 2009, my dear friend Carrie met Jon in a drama class. Eventually, Carrie brought to Jon’s attention that he was both tall and Greek, and she had a girlfriend who was also tall and Greek, so the two of us should meet. At a small gathering of friends at my house, Carrie brought Jon over and we bonded over beer and the thought-provoking Ryan Reynolds classic, Waiting.
When did y’all get married? October 12, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 125
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I found my dress at J. Crew. Even though I have always admired elaborate dresses, I knew I wanted something super simple and elegant that I would be comfortable in. The only alteration I made to the dress was adding a “V” in the back to make it a little more “me.”
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? The officiant read “Marriage Morning” by Alfred Lord Tennyson, along with some traditional readings from the Bible.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. It was important to us that the music was very non-traditional. I walked down the aisle to “Moon River.” It has always been a favorite of mine (and a gentle nod to the theme song from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which is one of my favorite movies), and it was also my grandfather’s favorite song. He passed when my mother was very young, and knowing that it was his favorite solidified my decision to walk down the aisle to it. We walked back up the aisle together to “At Last,” for obvious reasons. :) Our first dance was to “I Go to the Barn Because I Like The” by Band of Horses. The band has always been a favorite of ours, and the song has always held meaning for us. My father and I danced to “Do You Realize” by the Flaming Lips, Jon and his mother danced to “What a Wonderful World,” and my brother and I danced to “Green Eyes” by Coldplay.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My something borrowed was my late grandmother’s wedding ring. My something old and blue was material from my late grandmother’s wedding dress (a blue lace suit), which one of my bridesmaids made into a garter. My something new was my dress and shoes.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The FOOD. Epicure of Charleston served up traditional Carolina shrimp and grits, steak, chicken, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, chicken salad sandwiches, crab and artichoke dip, and two varieties of salad.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? We had a bit of a roller coaster with our budget. We knew that an outdoor wedding was expensive, but it seemed like we went back and forth with our budget weekly. One day, it would seem like we were right on the mark, and the next day, it would seem like we were going to have to cancel the whole wedding. We even went so far as to tour an indoor venue that we knew we didn’t want. It quickly made us realize that RiverOaks was worth every penny.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Jon: The ceremony. Our pastor performed an amazing service that touched everyone in attendance. Of course, it was also the first time we saw each other that day. Alix: The dancing!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Jon: Make sure that when you’re shopping for venues, you know your budget and ask the owner what the cost of the average wedding is at that venue. Also, figure out as a couple which parts of the wedding are really important to you and put more thought/finance into those aspects of the wedding. It also helps to have parents who are involved and supportive–we could never have done this without them. Alix: Never forget what the wedding is about; it is the covenant made by two people joined in love. Planning is stressful, and can often bring out the worst in each other, but that usually only happens when you lose site of the purpose and the reason for all of the planning.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We currently own a home in downtown Charleston, which we share with a very spoiled dog. We both work close to home and enjoy what we do. Kids are on our minds but it will likely be a few years in the future. At the moment, we’re just thrilled to be starting our lives together!

I have butterflies of excitement in my stomach typing these words: V6 is only one week away!! Are y’all as excited as we are?

One of the most fun and rewarding parts of working at Southern Weddings is following along with our sweet brides as they plan their big days. That’s how most of our readers find us, after all, and from their proposal stories to their etiquette questions to their wedding pictures, we love it all! That’s why I was so excited about the fact that Justin proposed to Melissa aided by a video he made, which they graciously shared with us. I watched it before I even finished reading their interview, so by the time I got around to looking at the pictures from their rustic navy and pink wedding, they felt like old friends! P.S. You can also check out their wedding video here.

Thank you kindly to Crystal Stokes for sharing Melissa and Justin’s special day with us!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I had an idea of what I liked, down to every detail. My mother, bridesmaids, Rachel and Jillian, and I decided to go look at dresses at J Major’s in Charlotte, NC. I tried on SO many dresses. Rachel threw one into the mix that was completely unlike what I thought I liked. She told my mom, “I just really want to see what she looks like in this. What if she likes it?!” When I put it on, I KNEW it was the one. Funny how things work out sometimes!
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! Of course! My veil was my something borrowed. My garter was my something blue–it was made of ivory lace with a navy blue flower and pearls. My something old was my sapphire ring, which is very special to me. My dress, bracelet, and earrings were my something new. We also followed the rest of the rhyme, “and a sixpence in her shoe.” One of my bridesmaids, Lindsay, taped a coin to the bottom of my shoe!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did decide to do a first look. With the location of the wedding, the walk down to the ceremony was a very long walk and I would not have been able to see Justin’s initial reaction. I also knew I would be very emotional, and I wanted that to be a special, intimate moment for just us. It is now one of the sweetest and most memorable moments from our wedding.

Our wedding colors were navy blue and hot pink, so the flowers were all different shades of pink. We didn’t know much about flowers, other than that I love lilies, so we gave our florist creative liberty to do what she thought looked great. She went above and beyond our expectations!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We wood burned the words of 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 onto slices of wood and hung them off of shepherd hooks to line the aisle of our wedding. The words are so special to us, and perfectly describe what we want to build our marriage on.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did not write our own vows. Our ceremony was conducted by my grandfather, who is a Presbyterian minister, so it was very traditional.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? 1 John 4:8-10, 16-19. These were read by two of my cousins that are very close to me, and I will always remember them reading about how “God is love.” It was very sweet.

We exchanged rings and said “I do” RIGHT before the bottom fell out of the sky and it rained. It was one of the craziest and most exciting moments of our lives. The timing was truly incredible.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. This was one of our favorite things about our wedding! We had a two-tiered vanilla cake on a cake stand that was placed on an overturned tin wash tub. We also had cupcakes in a variety of flavors for our guests that were placed on the wash tub. They were so delicious, and our guests loved them!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Justin had just moved to Charlotte, North Carolina and didn’t know anyone. He became friends with his coworker, Tyler, who was dating one of my childhood friends, Lindsay. Justin and I met thanks to Tyler and Lindsay, while hanging out at Lindsay’s house in January 2010. I later learned that Justin was instantly interested in me, but was too shy to tell me. We became really good friends and talked all the time. On New Year’s Eve 2011, when we were hanging out with friends and celebrating the coming of the New Year, something changed. We just knew we should make the move from friends to dating. It was a whirlwind romance, and he stole my heart. A little over a year later, we were engaged.
Tell us all about the proposal! On February 2, 2013, it was just a normal Saturday night to me. We had decided to go out to eat at one of our favorite restaurants. While dining, being as impatient as always, I decided I was too excited to wait to give Justin his Valentine’s Day present. I asked, “Can we PLEASE exchange gifts tonight?!? As laid back as he is, he said yes. When we arrived back at his house, I ran to get my gift, and then waited on his couch while he told me awkwardly that he would be right back. It seemed like an eternity, but it was probably only a few minutes. When he came back, he had a shoebox of old stuff of his, and turned on his TV. He opened YouTube and played a video titled, “Awesome Video For Melissa.” It was a video he had made of pictures of us with words at the bottom of each picture, making up a letter to me describing all the reasons why he loved me. The song playing was “You Are The Best Thing,” by Ray LaMontagne. At the end of the song, he pulled a small box out of the shoebox of old stuff, got down on one knee and said, “Melissa, I love you more than anything in the world, and I would love to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?” Crying as I responded, I jumped and said “Yes!”
When did y’all get married? August 9, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 150

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Walking down the aisle, we used “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” by Ingrid Michaelson. The first time we heard the song, we knew it was the one for this moment. The words described how we felt so perfectly. Our walk back down the aisle was to “You Are The Best Thing,” by Ray LaMontagne. Justin always said this song reminded him of us, and he actually incorporated it into his proposal. We decided it was the perfect song for the recessional. Our first dance was to “The More I See You,” by Nat King Cole. I’ve always loved it, and since it is such a beautiful and classic song, we knew that it would be meaningful for us throughout our lives. We were supposed to have two of my cousins sing “The Prayer” during the ceremony, but since the rain was closing in, we decided to skip the song for that time and have it at the reception instead. They sang right before we ate, and it was the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? In true Southern fashion, we had an outdoor wedding on a farm, which also had a rock quarry. The vegetables served at our dinner were grown on the farm. The food was AMAZING! We incorporated mason jars throughout our whole wedding, from the save the dates to the drinking glasses and centerpieces. We had so much fun deciding how to do that! For our centerpieces, our florist found all different types of flowers and greenery to create a wildflower look. We also displayed my bridal portrait at the reception, which is a must in our family!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The biggest challenge was getting things done in a reasonable amount of time while working with everyone’s schedule.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Our favorite vendor was definitely our photographer, Crystal Stokes. She was such a joy to work with. She helped us with so many different things that we weren’t sure about, and she was always very quick to respond to my questions (something any bride can appreciate). My favorite details were all the mason jars that we incorporated throughout the wedding. They were all different sizes and colors, and really made it feel more Southern!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Work to get things done at the beginning so you don’t stress about the details at the end.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are mostly looking forward to being married and spending time with our best friend, and soon, we will begin building a family together!
