Gracious, how absolutely Southern and stunning is Rosa? With her chic dark hair, classic Lela Rose gown, and WishPiece belt, she’s reminiscent of a modern Scarlett O’Hara! And that caplet? Le sigh! Beyond obsessing over her wedding day style, I am completely taken by the sweet details of Rosa and Vincent’s wedding, many of which were created by their friends and family. I especially love their ceremony arch–the wood was donated by their dear friends, then carefully constructed by the Vincent and his father, and finally, lovingly decorated with flowers by Rosa’s family. It’s no wonder Vincent wanted to place it in their home after the wedding!

Thanks so very much to our Blue Ribbon Vendor Gracie Blue Photography for sharing this sweet day!

My dress was the very first wedding-related purchase I made. I showed Vincent pictures of dresses from a particular designer I kept gravitating toward, Lela Rose, and he was really impressed by one in particular. One that, of course, wasn’t as exciting to me, but I figured I probably couldn’t afford any of her dresses anyway, so it didn’t matter. I looked up the only boutique in Georgia that carries Lela Rose dresses, and found out they were having a sample sale…that was ending in ONE day. Talk about pressure! I went to the boutique by myself and tried on all kinds of designers, styles, and silhouettes. Lo and behold, the dress my fiancé had picked out was not only at the boutique, but was the one that spoke to me the most when I tried it on. I went back the next day to try it on again and bought it, almost immediately feeling remorse. For months and months, I drove my fiancé nuts about my dress indecision. It wasn’t until a few days before the wedding, when it all came together after alterations and with the accessories, that I absolutely fell in love with all of it. My mom’s reaction helped seal the deal.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did. We both have large families, and we wanted to have some nice private time before the wedding to get good pictures in. We also wanted to have pictures of our reactions to one another. We anticipated it being pretty emotional, but it was actually quite the opposite. Our first look was literally a matter of me tapping Vincent’s shoulder, him turning around, us both exclaiming, “You look great!”, and giving each other high fives for putting together really excellent outfits.

Late in the evening, while we were dancing, the 4-year-old daughter of a friend was dancing nearby. I knelt and touched her hand to dance with her, and the moment I touched her, she squealed in total fan-girl excitement. There were a few little girls there who thought I was a “real princess.” It was absolutely hilarious and unforgettable!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: From Vincent: The ceremony arch. Some friends had some raw cedar logs laying in their backyard, which they generously donated. I hauled them to my parents’ house, and my dad and I spent an evening cleaning them up and figuring out how they would go together. My dad managed to put the cleaned and cut logs together into this beautiful, rustic arch, and then Rosa’s family and friends decorated it with flowers. Their hard work created a beautiful, memorable frame around us during the ceremony. It turned out perfectly. I sort of want it at our house.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? We took a day trip all around North Georgia and all the way to Chattanooga to take a look at a few venues. We found a couple of contenders, but none seemed quite right. On our drive back home, we drove by a friend’s property in rural North Georgia, and the decision seemed so simple. Our friend’s property was just as beautiful as some of the venues we had looked at, and it provided the flexibility we wanted in terms of time and catering. We knew having our wedding there would be a HUGE undertaking, but my family was up to the challenge.

We ordered tiny wooden pencils with our wedding hashtag (#rosaplusvincent) embossed in gold. We put them at every place setting, along with a fill-in-the-blank card. We got to see so many wedding pictures on social media from our friends and family because of the hashtag. I’m glad we did it!

What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? We cut costs in as many ways as possible. Almost every detail at our wedding was DIY, or made by friends and family, from the beautiful flowers to the arch. It was such a blessing to have so much help and support. One of the biggest ways we cut costs was by using a restaurant that we love and frequent in Atlanta for our food. We also bought salad greens and dressing in bulk at a wholesale food mart. We had enough food to feed 125-150 people and it cost us just under $1000.

From Vincent: I was most surprised by the fireworks during the reception. When friends of ours asked for our approval to buy fireworks, I thought that they meant sparklers or something. When that first burst hit the horizon, I was absolutely awestruck. All I could do was hold my bride’s hand and watch the lights explode and twinkle above us. It was a symbol to me of all the trouble and expense people had gone through on our behalf, and it was absolutely humbling.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met at party at a mutual friend’s house. We instantly wrote one another off romantically–neither of us thought we were compatible! However, we’re both web designers, so we grew to be good friends over the course of a year or so. Eventually, we both realized we got butterflies when the other walked into the room! Neither of us had seen it coming. We started dating, and the rest is history.
Tell us all about the proposal! Vincent proposed a year after he told me he loved me on a blue bench in the town square. Unbeknownst to me, Vincent designed a ring, composed a song for me, and with the help of his family, maneuvered me onto that very same blue bench. He and his four brothers performed the song while I sat there with red roses in my lap, staring and laughing and crying. The song ended with Vincent on one knee.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We walked away from our ceremony to Hall & Oates’ “You Make My Dreams Come True”–it was such a fun little moment to leave the ceremony arch to one of the happiest love songs ever. It set the tone for the dance party later on that included dance hits from the 80’s and 90’s. For our first dance, we chose “This Will Be Our Year” by The Zombies. It’s a classic song that’s emblematic of our relationship and our lives. We’d waited awhile to find one another, but this was finally our year!
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. The cake wasn’t a huge priority for us, but it turned out incredible. A friend of a friend put it together. It was a naked cake garnished with strawberries and white buttercream on top. While we didn’t get to eat any at the wedding, we took a piece with us and enjoyed it the following night at our cozy cabin.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The sheer volume of things we had to do. We didn’t hire a planner, and we had a pretty small budget, so getting everything done on time and on budget was a challenge. Planning a wedding with a demanding full-time job is no fun. Thank goodness for the friends and family members who helped along the way!
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? It’s so hard to choose because we didn’t hire many things out, but the few things we DID hire out ended up being great decisions. Our photographer, Gracie Blue, was such a pro. We didn’t have a coordinator, and at times, she stepped in to make sure people were in the right place at the right time, especially if it meant getting the right shot (and often, it did). We hired her a year ahead of time, and it was a really great decision.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Rely on your support group–friends, family, and vendors. Do not try to do everything yourself; you will go absolutely nuts if you try to keep up with it all. Delegate, delegate, delegate! On the day of, please, just enjoy yourself. Don’t stress about last-minute to-do’s; let things happen as they happen. It’s a celebration, so celebrate!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? After over a year of planning and sweating details, it is so nice to just relax and be together, without wedding plans looming over our heads! We are looking forward to merging our skills as web and graphic designers and starting our own business together!

The two words that kept coming to my mind as I was admiring Samantha and Ben’s Virginia mountain wedding were striking and simple. They didn’t fill their wedding to the brim with details–they just chose a beautiful, meaningful location (Ben’s grandparents’ property, where Ben’s parents had been married years before!) and focused on creating moments for their wedding rather than things. Don’t get me wrong, there was no shortage of DIY in this day, from the flowers to the tent decor, but the most special elements of Samantha and Ben’s wedding were their emotional letter exchange, sweet ceremony, and joyful dance party celebration!

We’re so grateful to our Blue Ribbon Vendor, Perry Vaile, for sharing this lovely day with us!

It is an old family tradition for the father to place a sixpence in the left heel of the bride’s shoe the night before the wedding for good luck, so my sixpence was my something old!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I found my dress eight days after we got engaged…yes, embarrassingly fast. My birthday fell on a Monday (my day off), so my mother took the day off with me and we decided that we should go “play” at David’s Bridal. We were definitely not intending to purchase anything that day. Long story short, the woman helping us found out that I was an “artsy, dancer chick,” so after trying on a few of my picks, she said, “I have something a little more unique that only one other bride has purchased, wanna try it on?” My answer was, “Duh! Put me in anything!” She pulled a White by Vera Wang tulle ball gown in a two-toned ivory and beige coloring. After trying on a few more dresses and coming back to the “artsy” choice, I took multiple laps around the store, eventually finding myself saying “I think this might be my dress.” I never thought I’d be one to cry over a wedding dress, but the look on my mother’s face and the simple thought that this dress represented the fact I had finally found Ben is what did it. As my mother was hunting down tissues and our consultant was going to retrieve her “found the dress” bell, the song playing on the overhead speakers caught my ears–it was the song that Ben and I had planned for our first dance on the big day. I am not one who believes in coincidence, so I took it as a sign, and made my purchase!

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? We both agree that our most memorable moment was our exchange of letters. Prior to the ceremony, we separately wrote letters for each other. Just before the ceremony, Ben was led to a bench in front of a beautiful tree in the backyard and was instructed to keep his eyes closed. I then joined him on the bench back-to-back, and without actually seeing each other, we were able to hold hands and share an intimate moment as we read each other’s letters.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We are both fortunate enough to have musically talented younger siblings, who prepared and performed several duets with their guitar and mandolin while people were being seated for the ceremony. We walked down the aisle to an acoustic version of the song “A Thousand Years” and back up the aisle to “You’re My Best Friend” by Queen.

We were married on Ben’s grandmother’s property nestled in the mountains of Virginia. The location is stunning–a cozy brick house on top of a hill, surrounded by beautiful mountaintops. I’ve also always wanted to be married outside in front of a big tree, and it just so happens that there are two gorgeous maple trees sitting side by side in the front of the property. Last but not least, it is also where Ben’s parents had their wedding. :)

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We were married outside in a small, Southern, mountain town in Virginia, and we were surrounded by all of our friends and family. We both come from very large families, and everybody came together to help us set up our DIY wedding–from friends putting flowers together for the bouquets to aunts and uncles draping fabric throughout the tent, it was a grand production that everyone wanted to be a part of. Our meal was made in a homemade Southern style, and included pecan-crusted chicken, mashed sweet potatoes with brown sugar, and peach sweet tea.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Our very closest friends/cousins, Carlee and Adam, helped to set us up. Carlee likes to think of this set-up as “paying it forward” since my mother was the matchmaker for her parents. Months before I met Ben, she informed me that there was a guy in Adam’s medical school class that I “just had to meet”–Ben and Adam were at Duke together and hung out in the same circle of friends. At a Duke medical school function, Carlee and I found ourselves chatting on the far end of the restaurant when I spotted this handsome guy across the way. I noticed that he was talking with another girl who looked very interested in him, when Carlee pointed and shouted “Ooooh! That’s him! That’s Ben, Sammy!” Lo and behold, who does she point to? The guy I’m already checking out. Eventually, we made our way back to a group of Adam’s friends. We were standing in a circle discussing some medical procedure that, of course, went in one of my ears and out the other, when Ben walked up to me, extending his hand, and asked confidently, “Can I introduce myself to you?” He proceeded to hold my hand for another minute (supposedly, unbeknownst to him) while he had a conversation with the guy next to him. I stood there stunned, staring at our intertwined hands, laughing to myself, thinking “This guy has moves.” To this day, when we recall the night we met, Ben states that he had no idea he had held my hand for so long!
Tell us all about the proposal! About a year before Ben’s proposal, he surprised me with the best birthday present ever: two tickets to go tandem skydiving! After we touched down, we realized that it was still super early in the day, so we asked the owner what there was to do “’round these parts.” He, like a true Southern gent, told us that there was a vineyard two minutes up the road! After an afternoon of touring the stunning, Italian-inspired Raffaldini Vineyards, tasting an array of wines and purchasing a bottle or two, we ended up on a bench that overlooked the grounds. It was there that Ben first told me he was falling in love with me; I, of course, reciprocated the feeling. A little less than a year later, we planned a trip to the mountains to get away and see my brother. On our way home, we ended up at Raffaldini Vineyards again. We spent the evening reminiscing and trying their newest wines, ending up back on the same bench where we first said “I love you.” That’s where Ben got down on one knee and asked if I would be his “teammate” for life.

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Really step back and appreciate all of the people who have gathered to support you and help you throughout your engagement and into your marriage. It is very easy to get stressed out over all the little details and get upset or be short with people close to you. You have to keep in mind when planning a do-it-yourself wedding that there are lots of hands and minds involved, and with that comes a lot of emotions. It is so much more enjoyable to be a relaxed bride, even when things aren’t going as initially planned. Also, something that a friend told me shortly after Ben and I got engaged was to make sure that the week before your wedding, and especially the day before the wedding, you should find some time to sneak off and share some time alone. This is harder than it seems, and we are so glad we did it!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Just a couple of weeks after getting married, we moved out of our home state and started our new jobs in a fresh new city. Ben graduated from medical school a week before our wedding, and he has started up as a resident in Internal Medicine at a great institution. I was fortunate enough to quickly start a job at a terrific Pilates studio and have begun dancing with a local non-profit modern dance company. We have also become the proud new parents of two adorable kittens!

Happy Valentine’s Day week, belles! We’ve been saving some of our most fabulous pink weddings for this week, and we hope y’all love them as much as we do!

When it comes to meaningful venues, Catherine and Kyle hit the jackpot. They were married at the incredibly beautiful Swan House, which was built in 1926 by Catherine’s great great grandparents, and has since been the venue for many special family memories. The Swan House is an iconic landmark in Atlanta, and it was the perfect place for Catherine and Kyle to combine their New York City sensibilities and Catherine’s Southern roots at their stylish wedding.

Thanks so much for Pink Shoe Photography for sharing Catherine and Kyle’s wedding with us!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. This was my favorite part–I wish I could do it all over again! I found my dress in New York at Mark Ingram. The designer was having a trunk show and I decided to try on my dress. It was perfect and so unique. I’ve never seen anything like it.

We decided to do a first look because we knew we were both going to be really nervous. We felt it would help us relax and enjoy the ceremony.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? No we did not. It would have been too nerve wracking!
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? My good friend read the E.E. Cummings poem “I carry your heart with me (I carry it in).”

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The location. It was very special to me because my great great grandparents built the house in 1926. My father spent time there, and since he is no longer with us, I wanted to honor him and have his presence with us that day.

How amazing are these linens? The stripes are such a unique touch, but the neutral colors keep the overall look classic and elegant.

Our wedding cake was amazing! My friend had the same lady make it for her wedding three years ago, and the moment I tasted it, I knew that it had to be my cake. The lady is the head baker at Ingles grocery store in northern Georgia and she makes a mean buttercream!

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Being with all of our friends and family for the whole weekend. Our guests traveled from all over the USA and we were so thankful for that. We loved celebrating with everyone and getting down on the dance floor.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met on a cold, snowy January night at a bar in New York City, where we were both attending separate birthday parties. I approached him because I thought he was good looking, and we ended up hanging out all night! At the end of the night, I realized I left my credit card at the first bar I went to that evening, and since it was too late to go get it, Kyle asked me if I wanted to meet with him this week so we could get it together. Since then, we have been inseparable.
Tell us all about the proposal! I went to happy hour with my girlfriends after work and told Kyle I would be home at 9 p.m. He was nervously waiting in our apartment for me to come home, and I ended up staying out until 10:30. When I finally walked in the door, he had balloons, fake cocktail rings and Full House’s Jessie and the Rippers song “Forever” playing in the background. It was an amazing moment that I will never forget.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. I walked down the aisle to a string quartet playing Elvis’ “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and we left to The Beatles’ “All You Need is Love.” Our first dance was to Nikki Bluhm’s cover of “Danny’s Song.” We had a very difficult time agreeing on what our first dance song should be, and the week before our wedding, we went to see Nikki Bluhm in concert. She and her husband sang “Danny’s Song” and we fell in love with it!
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? All of the food was traditional Southern food. Not living in the South has me constantly craving Southern food, so I thought it would be the perfect way to honor my heritage. Plus, I wanted the out-of-towners to experience the best food in the world!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Two of Kyle’s sisters became pregnant and were due around the day of our wedding. They were unable to attend, and it was really heartbreaking not to have them there. The older sister ended up scheduling an emergency c-section and gave birth during our rehearsal dinner. So thankfully, they were at home in Brooklyn and not at the dinner!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Elope! Just kidding! Surround yourself with good people, don’t get caught up in other people’s drama, and don’t stress too much. Everything will end up perfectly.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are still living in New York City and hope to eventually move back down South. We are excited to see where life takes us!
