I’m not sure that I’ll ever tire of pretty pink blooms. Christina’s lovely bouquet reminds me of spring and Marie Antoinette. (Don’t soft pinks and greens remind you of Marie, too? Maybe it’s just my Paris brain.) We are loving the soft colors in Christina + Scott’s wedding, photographed by Haley Sheffield, but it’s the BBQ sundaes that really had us gawking! I had actually never heard of a BBQ sundae before (shame on me) so Emily had to fill me in on the details. Whitney was a bit skeptical, but I decided that it’s the best. Idea. Ever. Where do you stand?

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. My friend signed up for match.com and encouraged me to sign up as well. After much pleading, I eventually signed up for a 7 day free trial. Scott and I emailed back and forth until I finally worked up the nerve to ask him out for coffee, since he was taking so long to make a move. We met up at Atlanta Bread Company for coffee. We chatted until they closed the place down, and the rest is history.
Describe the proposal. Scott flew me up to Oregon to visit his family for the first time. The first day we arrived, we took a trip by ourselves to his family’s vacation house on the Oregon Coast. We took a hike to see a lighthouse, and on the way, he proposed to me on a huge cliff with the ocean crashing beneath us. It was incredibly romantic!
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Romantic, Southern and charming.
In what month did you get married? October
How many guests attended your wedding? 150
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: My favorite detail was the beautiful (and giant) handmade lanterns I found at The Not Wedding event in Atlanta. They were so beautiful, and my favorite pictures are the ones underneath them.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The reception was in a beautiful restored barn, and the girls all got ready in an old Southern home from the 1800s! There were BBQ sundaes, sweet tea in a few different flavors, and shrimp and grits! I wanted to give all of our wedding guests that had traveled from Oregon a taste of the South.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I went with one of my friends who was getting married to try on bridesmaid dresses. I saw a wedding dress on a mannequin and fell in love with it. Even though Scott and I were not engaged, my friends urged me to try it on. I fell in love with it, and the next week Scott proposed! I went back and got that dress. It was the only one I ever tried on.
Describe your wedding flowers: My flowers were light pinks and whites. They were very ruffled and fluffy, just like I wanted. My florist even managed to make my dream of peonies in my bouquet come true, even in October!
Describe your wedding cake or dessert: I’m a huge dessert girl, and while I wanted it to look great, I was even more concerned about taste. My cake was both gorgeous and delicious! There was an almond layer, and orange layer, and a strawberry layer. The cake was simple, with no actual flowers. It had vintage, pale pink floral cutout designs all over.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? I was working, planning a wedding, and going to school full time. Finding time to get everything done was by far the biggest challenge!
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Definitely the venue! It was a gorgeous backdrop for the photos, and the staff made my day so memorable and stress free!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The moment I saw my future husband’s face as I walked down the aisle. I couldn’t wait to exchange promises of forever.
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did not, because the part of the wedding Scott most looked forward to was seeing me walk down the aisle. I was thankful we didn’t, because the look on his face when I came out was well worth the wait.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Make sure it is everything you want. Don’t be bullied into other people’s ideas for your big day. It’s ok to say no!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We’re talking babies right now, and I’m very excited to start our own little family.

I love everything about this wedding. My daughter is getting married at a 150 year old barn in Oklahoma in September. We are from Tennessee, the Groom is from Oklahoma and want to have Southern elements from both Southern states. This is wonderful.

Absolutely gorgeous wedding! I would really like to know where I could find those amazing giant lanterns for my wedding this summer. I was disappointed to find out my venue wouldn’t allow the kind you set off into the sky, but these might be a great alternative!

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Elizabeth! I LOVE those lanterns, too! Christina got them from Brown Linen Co, a company that does lots of custom work. I’m sure if you inquired she’d be able to give you all the info! http://brownlinengoods.com/index2.php

One of my favorite things to see is when couples like Rebecca + Colin take design elements that are meaningful and incorporate it into their big day. The scrolled iron gates characteristic of Charleston made an appearance on the couple’s invitation suite and the rest of the wedding was filled with that Southern town charm. Among the lush white flowers and greenery, elegant details set the scene. (For instance, that gorgeous tent?!) I’m the biggest fan of textured cakes and Rebecca + Colin’s sweet treat complete with their monogram has become one of my favorites. Biggest thanks to Virgil Bunao for sharing this wedding with us!

From the bride:

When Colin and I were debating where to get married, we decided pretty quickly on Charleston. Since we met in New York and are each from different states (Texas and South Carolina), we knew our family and friends would be traveling from all over the country for our wedding. For this very reason, we wanted somewhere easy to get to, easy to get around and most importantly, somewhere fun and unique that would be like a mini vacation for our guests. Charleston is all of these things and when you add in the fabulous lowcountry cuisine, stunning waterfront views and the historical beauty and charm – you get the perfect location for a wedding celebration!

Our Save the Date and Invitation, which mimicked the scrolled iron gates so popular in Charleston, really set the tone for our wedding – simple and elegant with a Southern feel. When it came to the colors of the wedding, I knew that I wanted to use a deep plum, my favorite color for fall, which we highlighted with shades of green, ivory and champagne and lots of mercury glass accents! The day of the wedding was luckily just as beautiful as when we visited the year before. Throughout the evening, guests dined on local favorites such as shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes and fresh seafood. The lounge area under the tent created the perfect place to rest your feet after boogying down on the dance floor and the hanging lanterns in the trees cast a magical glow on the celebration. We ended the night with a showering of lavender and a getaway on a Charleston rickshaw. Our wedding day was perfect and far exceeded our expectations. Thanks to all of our fabulous vendors for helping to create such a memorable day!

Holy Moly purple and pink love! Can we all agree that Brittany + Keith’s wedding is bright, bold gorgeousness? Brittany looks radiant dressed in Sottero and Midgely and flanked by her bridesmaids in Alfred Angelo. Not to be too outdone, Keith and his groomsmen rocked sleek grey suits and indigo ties and Air Jordans. That’s right, y’all — those are some stylish gents! The bride’s favorite detail of the night was their wedding cake. I must admit, the tiers of draping, banding and monogramming (yes!) are very impressive. Big thanks to Ivy Weddings for sharing this beauty!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I searched everywhere for the perfect dress. One day, I was in my hometown for a visit and my mom drove by a new wedding shop that had the most beautiful dress in the store window. I went inside and the owner told me it had just arrived. I tried it on and fell in love. I called all my family to the store and we all agreed it was the one.
Describe your wedding flowers: Our flowers were simply bold and beautiful. We incorporated eggplant and fuchsia roses, orchids, and calla lilies into the most stunning table arrangements. The deep eggplant and fuchsia colors offset the light Mediterranean look of the venue and it created a beautiful atmosphere for our guest to enjoy.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? At the end of the night when it was time for our exit to the car, I remember feeling so fulfilled and happy. Like, “Yes, we finally did it!” The lights flashing, petals in the air, love of my life by my side – the scene felt like it was right out of a movie. It was the end of the wedding but the beginning of so much more and the feeling was priceless.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Start early and do NOT procrastinate. But most of all, enjoy every minute because it goes by fast and you’re only going to do it once!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We met through Keith’s mother. Our families share the same small town background and she was attending my uncle’s wedding, which I was a bridesmaid in. Later that week, Keith and his mom were looking through a magazine and Keith said he commented on how pretty this girl was in one of the ads. His mom said she had seen a girl last week that was prettier and asked if he wanted her to introduce him. He said yes and his mother made the phone call to my mother. It’s funny when I think back on it because my mom and I thought she was crazy! A woman calls and says she saw me in my uncle’s wedding and would like for me to meet her son! We laughed and I really didn’t think much else about it. That is, until I saw him for myself. We had our first face-to-face meeting in the small town of Kennard, Texas, at a relative’s house. From there, we exchanged information and arranged our first date. The rest is history. Thanks Mrs. Charlene!
Describe the proposal. (From the groom) I was supposed to propose after one of our games. It was a big game and I had arranged plans with the team to help me afterwards. The plan was to win the game and propose to Brittany in the stands afterwards. There were going to be pictures showing on the big screen and music playing in the gym, the whole nine. We ended up losing and, needless to say, the plan and the mood were completely busted. I just remember feeling that winning or losing a game does not dictate the fact that I want to marry Brittany. So I kept our restaurant reservations and told my friends that I made a small revision but the plan was still on. At the restaurant, we were finished with dinner and just talking with our friends when I excused myself from the table. I went to the bathroom, nervous and after standing there for a minute, did a little dance in the mirror, and then walked back out to our lounge area overlooking the city and got on one knee.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Beautiful, emotional, fun.
In what month did you get married? August
How many guests attended your wedding? 215
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $50,000-$75,000
Describe your wedding cake or dessert: Our wedding cake was my favorite detail of the night! The cake was a custom designed 5-tier stunner with alternating layers of vanilla and red velvet topped with fondant and buttercream icing. The cake was adorned with elegant scrolls and banded with strips of bling. Judy from Simon Lee Bakery did an excellent job at bringing my cake vision to life.
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Our photographers Matt and Ivy! They helped create the best pictures ever!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? If it’s up to Keith, babies!! Because of Keith’s work schedule, we weren’t able to go on a honeymoon so we can’t wait for our much needed vacation!
