I have butterflies of excitement in my stomach typing these words: V6 is only one week away!! Are y’all as excited as we are?

One of the most fun and rewarding parts of working at Southern Weddings is following along with our sweet brides as they plan their big days. That’s how most of our readers find us, after all, and from their proposal stories to their etiquette questions to their wedding pictures, we love it all! That’s why I was so excited about the fact that Justin proposed to Melissa aided by a video he made, which they graciously shared with us. I watched it before I even finished reading their interview, so by the time I got around to looking at the pictures from their rustic navy and pink wedding, they felt like old friends! P.S. You can also check out their wedding video here.

Thank you kindly to Crystal Stokes for sharing Melissa and Justin’s special day with us!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I had an idea of what I liked, down to every detail. My mother, bridesmaids, Rachel and Jillian, and I decided to go look at dresses at J Major’s in Charlotte, NC. I tried on SO many dresses. Rachel threw one into the mix that was completely unlike what I thought I liked. She told my mom, “I just really want to see what she looks like in this. What if she likes it?!” When I put it on, I KNEW it was the one. Funny how things work out sometimes!
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! Of course! My veil was my something borrowed. My garter was my something blue–it was made of ivory lace with a navy blue flower and pearls. My something old was my sapphire ring, which is very special to me. My dress, bracelet, and earrings were my something new. We also followed the rest of the rhyme, “and a sixpence in her shoe.” One of my bridesmaids, Lindsay, taped a coin to the bottom of my shoe!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did decide to do a first look. With the location of the wedding, the walk down to the ceremony was a very long walk and I would not have been able to see Justin’s initial reaction. I also knew I would be very emotional, and I wanted that to be a special, intimate moment for just us. It is now one of the sweetest and most memorable moments from our wedding.

Our wedding colors were navy blue and hot pink, so the flowers were all different shades of pink. We didn’t know much about flowers, other than that I love lilies, so we gave our florist creative liberty to do what she thought looked great. She went above and beyond our expectations!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We wood burned the words of 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 onto slices of wood and hung them off of shepherd hooks to line the aisle of our wedding. The words are so special to us, and perfectly describe what we want to build our marriage on.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did not write our own vows. Our ceremony was conducted by my grandfather, who is a Presbyterian minister, so it was very traditional.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? 1 John 4:8-10, 16-19. These were read by two of my cousins that are very close to me, and I will always remember them reading about how “God is love.” It was very sweet.

We exchanged rings and said “I do” RIGHT before the bottom fell out of the sky and it rained. It was one of the craziest and most exciting moments of our lives. The timing was truly incredible.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. This was one of our favorite things about our wedding! We had a two-tiered vanilla cake on a cake stand that was placed on an overturned tin wash tub. We also had cupcakes in a variety of flavors for our guests that were placed on the wash tub. They were so delicious, and our guests loved them!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Justin had just moved to Charlotte, North Carolina and didn’t know anyone. He became friends with his coworker, Tyler, who was dating one of my childhood friends, Lindsay. Justin and I met thanks to Tyler and Lindsay, while hanging out at Lindsay’s house in January 2010. I later learned that Justin was instantly interested in me, but was too shy to tell me. We became really good friends and talked all the time. On New Year’s Eve 2011, when we were hanging out with friends and celebrating the coming of the New Year, something changed. We just knew we should make the move from friends to dating. It was a whirlwind romance, and he stole my heart. A little over a year later, we were engaged.
Tell us all about the proposal! On February 2, 2013, it was just a normal Saturday night to me. We had decided to go out to eat at one of our favorite restaurants. While dining, being as impatient as always, I decided I was too excited to wait to give Justin his Valentine’s Day present. I asked, “Can we PLEASE exchange gifts tonight?!? As laid back as he is, he said yes. When we arrived back at his house, I ran to get my gift, and then waited on his couch while he told me awkwardly that he would be right back. It seemed like an eternity, but it was probably only a few minutes. When he came back, he had a shoebox of old stuff of his, and turned on his TV. He opened YouTube and played a video titled, “Awesome Video For Melissa.” It was a video he had made of pictures of us with words at the bottom of each picture, making up a letter to me describing all the reasons why he loved me. The song playing was “You Are The Best Thing,” by Ray LaMontagne. At the end of the song, he pulled a small box out of the shoebox of old stuff, got down on one knee and said, “Melissa, I love you more than anything in the world, and I would love to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?” Crying as I responded, I jumped and said “Yes!”
When did y’all get married? August 9, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 150

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Walking down the aisle, we used “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” by Ingrid Michaelson. The first time we heard the song, we knew it was the one for this moment. The words described how we felt so perfectly. Our walk back down the aisle was to “You Are The Best Thing,” by Ray LaMontagne. Justin always said this song reminded him of us, and he actually incorporated it into his proposal. We decided it was the perfect song for the recessional. Our first dance was to “The More I See You,” by Nat King Cole. I’ve always loved it, and since it is such a beautiful and classic song, we knew that it would be meaningful for us throughout our lives. We were supposed to have two of my cousins sing “The Prayer” during the ceremony, but since the rain was closing in, we decided to skip the song for that time and have it at the reception instead. They sang right before we ate, and it was the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? In true Southern fashion, we had an outdoor wedding on a farm, which also had a rock quarry. The vegetables served at our dinner were grown on the farm. The food was AMAZING! We incorporated mason jars throughout our whole wedding, from the save the dates to the drinking glasses and centerpieces. We had so much fun deciding how to do that! For our centerpieces, our florist found all different types of flowers and greenery to create a wildflower look. We also displayed my bridal portrait at the reception, which is a must in our family!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The biggest challenge was getting things done in a reasonable amount of time while working with everyone’s schedule.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Our favorite vendor was definitely our photographer, Crystal Stokes. She was such a joy to work with. She helped us with so many different things that we weren’t sure about, and she was always very quick to respond to my questions (something any bride can appreciate). My favorite details were all the mason jars that we incorporated throughout the wedding. They were all different sizes and colors, and really made it feel more Southern!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Work to get things done at the beginning so you don’t stress about the details at the end.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are mostly looking forward to being married and spending time with our best friend, and soon, we will begin building a family together!

[…] Ok – 3 months is a minimum when choosing your photographer.  The fabulous lady I decided to go with, Crystal Stokes, is booked out a year from now.  A year… that is crazy, so find who you like and get on their schedule.  I looked at styles of photography, price points and the personality of the photographer and made a quick decision!  I believe that this is one of those “you will just know” situations.  I saw one of her photos and booked her – I mean look at that photo!  Here is that photo and the rest of the photos from that night can be seen here […]

Today’s wedding is close to our hearts because the SW gals know the bride and groom personally. Emily was an intern at Southern Weddings three years ago and our shop manager earlier this year. She couldn’t wait to marry Brendan, and it was clear to us why. Brendan is the nicest guy you’ll ever meet and they both share big hearts, big dreams and a great sense of humor. Their wedding took place just down the road from the SW offices and Caroline Joy did an amazing job at capturing the celebration and the commitment that marked E + B’s big day. We are so grateful that we can share them with you today!

We were both pretty traditional about doing a first look, and Brendan was adamant about not seeing me until I walked down the aisle! We did pray together before the ceremony and exchange notes, which was one of my favorite parts of the whole day.

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I borrowed my mom’s veil. My shoes were blue(ish). My right hand ring was my grandmother’s before she gave it to me several years ago. It was pretty fun to show it to her again at the wedding. And I bought myself a pretty little cross bracelet a few weeks before the big day!

My dad’s only request for my wedding was that he walk me down the aisle to Pachbel’s Canon, so I found a really beautiful acoustic guitar version that now makes me cry! The bridesmaids processed to “Better” by Jess Ray, and Brendan and I also washed each other’s feet as a sign of serving each other in marriage while two of our close friends played guitar and sang “You’re Beautiful” by Phil Wickham. My dad and I danced to “Piano Man” by Billy Joel since that’s always been a favorite song of ours.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Yes! We really tried to incorporate as much of the Gospel into our vows as possible. Our ceremony was rooted in our faith, so it was very important for us to express our belief that we only love each other because God loved us first. From there, we added in little things that were fun or specific to us. I vowed to make him cookie dough whenever he pleases and he vowed to stop and let me photograph something as often as I want!
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Ephesians 5:22-33

I love this moment!! It was one of Emily’s most memorable from the day and we can tell how giddy they both are to finally be married!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We had touches of the South throughout the day. We gave guests little fans to keep them cool in the summer heat and had corn hole to play during the cocktail hour. I’m sure most of our guests were pretty stuffed with biscuits, BBQ and sweet potato casserole by the time they left too. We also sent everyone home with little jars of honey.

Oh I love this photo of Emily and her dad! The father-daughter dance is one of my favorite wedding traditions and I love that they had a bit of fun with theirs.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Delicious! While I only ate what Brendan smeared on my face, I’ve had Edible Art’s almond amaretto cake several times before, and it’s SO GOOD! We had it surrounded by all of our favorite desserts, from Girl Scout Thin Mints to mini banana pudding cups.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: I’m a big collector of trinkets, so the tables were filled with tiny antique bottles and mismatched china. I loved collecting all those little bottles with my mom, and it’s fun having them around our new home now! Oh and the twinkly lights–magical!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Brendan and I knew each other a little throughout college at UNC-Chapel Hill, but we never actually had a real conversation until I think our senior year. We always seemed to be running into each other, and within a month, we were dating. When we got engaged, we both admitted to knowing that we’d get married after the first date!
Tell us all about the proposal! Brendan’s proposal took all day! He proposed on our one-year anniversary after a full-day adventure. To finish our date, he took me on a little stroll through the UNC’s arboretum, then led me around a corner to this beautiful vine-covered walkway, my favorite spot on campus. I was so confused, to be honest! Right as we walked in, there was a big sign that said “Emily, I love you because…” and my immediate reaction was “Oh hey, there must be another Emily around here!” But when I saw the 100 tiny cards hanging from the walkway’s ceiling and Brendan’s huge smile, I knew it had to be for me. As we walked, Brendan explained each card to me and all the different reasons and ways he loved me. (Yes, he is certainly a keeper!) These cards led out of the walkway, up the street, and past UNC’s Old Well to the bench where we had our first kiss, which was in the rain, no less! The last card said “because I have chosen to,” and after me briefly saying that I was still really confused, Brendan asked me to stand up. He got down on one knee and told me that those 100 things about me were great, but that if they all disappeared tomorrow, he’d still choose to love me forever. With that, he popped the question, and I literally collapsed in his arms! I’ve never been so overwhelmed with joy and gratefulness! I have a bunch more written on my blog here.
When did y’all get married? June 1, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 200
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. It was the first one I tried on! I’m incredibly indecisive, so that’s actually pretty incredible! It went through quite a few alterations to get it just right, but I remember literally twirling and dancing around the store with my mom and one of my bridesmaids after one of my fittings. My mom made her own wedding dress and used the leftover bits of lace to make the detailing on the belt, which made my dress even more special.
Describe your wedding flowers. I basically told our florist to have fun! I showed her a bunch of pictures of bouquets that I thought were pretty and she took it from there. It was a mix of garden roses, ranunculus, peonies and succulents. We ordered bulk flowers from them as well, and my awesome bridesmaids did all the table arrangements the day of the wedding.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Praying fervently that we’d have good weather since every bit of our wedding was outside. A rain plan was not easy to put together. And since I was also planning everything on my own, it was definitely a challenge coordinating all the details and vendors.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Oh, Caroline certainly lives up to her middle name! I was so excited to be photographed by a woman whose work and business I admire so much.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Oh it’s so hard to choose! I vividly remember the moments before I walked down the aisle (and actually seeing Lara and Grace!) because that’s when I saw the reception set up for the first time. I wish I could bottle the giddiness I felt right before we were pronounced man and wife. I loved dancing with my dad under all those twinkly lights. I just remember everything being so magical and better than I ever imagined.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? At the end of the day, as long as you say “I do,” nothing else really matters. It’s easy to get caught up in a bazillion details that make a wedding pretty, but the fact that two people love each other enough to commit their lives to each other is what makes a wedding beautiful. Take a deep breath, remember why you’re getting married, and everything will fall into place.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? A lot! I’m a wedding photographer, so I’m excited to know how my brides feel and serve them even more on their wedding day. Brendan is a second year medical student at UNC-Chapel Hill, so he’ll be getting even smarter than he already is and working to become the best doctor ever! We’re also having a blast finding new ways to love each other and have fun together. So far, building a fort in our living room has been my favorite!

Sorry for the delay this morning, friends! It is our last day with V6 before sending her (yes, we call it a her) off to the printers, and good gracious y’all, she is a beauty! Have you placed your preorder yet?

As a new North Carolina resident, I can attest to the fact that this state is easy to fall in love with. Kortney and Kyle met shortly after Kortney moved to North Carolina herself, and after many porch-sittin’ dates and a romantic Christmas morning proposal, they were married in one of the prettiest parts of beautiful NC. The views from their mountain venue take my breath away! Even more breathtaking? The love Kortney and Kyle clearly have for each other–Kortney even says that the hardest part of wedding planning was waiting to marry the love of her life. So sweet!

Thank you kindly to Ivan & Louise for sharing Kortney and Kyle’s wedding with us!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. I had just moved to Charlotte, North Carolina from Bloomington, Indiana. It was my first full weekend in Charlotte, living in a new place for the first time by myself. I was visiting a church on Sunday, and when I stepped through the doorway of the church, Kyle was the first person I laid eyes on. It truly was a “love at first sight” moment–he made me feel calm in the midst of being surrounded by the unfamiliar, without even saying a word to me. There was something special about this guy. It only took him four weeks to notice me at church! But when he did, he made a point to cut me off during my race for the door and introduce himself. After finding out how much we had in common, including our visions for church planting and our affinity for craft beer, we spent night after night porch-sitting on rocking chairs together at my Uptown townhome, overlooking the Charlotte cityscape. I fell in love porch-sitting with this man whose love for the Lord and calm, caring personality made me feel more comfortable than I’d ever felt before.

Finding my dress was a breeze! I am pretty particular when it comes to my taste and style, so I knew what I was looking for. I described my hope for a classic, yet simple, look and feel, with an empire waist and a sweetheart neckline. The consultant brought out four dresses and the third time was the charm. I put on the gown, my hands found their way to the pockets, and I was sold! My best friends’ tears helped seal the deal, too.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We decided to forgo a first look for the chance to capture our pure, raw emotions of walking down the aisle and meeting one another at the altar to become husband and wife in front of everyone we love. We wanted to share in the moment with our closest friends and family and I am so glad we did.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Kyle adapted a classic set of vows to fit our style and commitment. They were beautiful. They displayed our promise to live as positive examples of Christ and to stay grounded in the Word of God. Our relationship wouldn’t exist if not for the work of Christ in our lives; He brought us together.

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Hebrews 10:23-25: “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Two weeks before our wedding, we picked this as our family verse to live and love by.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The stream! It was so much fun throwing our shoes off and dipping our feet into the cold river to snap a few unique shots. We love being outside, especially near water. During our first visit to the venue, we passed the stream on our way in and I was sold at that moment. The scenic drive through the woods, up the stream and through the mountains, was a fairy tale.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Besides the pimento cheese, sweet tea, and barn reception, our wedding took place in the gorgeous mountains of Western North Carolina beside the Blue Ridge Parkway. It truly a Southern wedding dream, complete with a parasol!

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Don’t try to do it alone. I hosted a fun decor-craft party, complete with snacks, Izze’s and music. As long as you make it fun and not too long or complicated, people will be more than willing to help. People are excited to be a part of your special day and need creativity in their lives. Involve others and your day will be elevated from a so-so event to your dream wedding affair, I promise!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Our cake was a very special part of our day. Kyle’s grandmother has been baking wedding cakes for her whole life. She has made everyone’s cake in the family, and throughout the years, has never lost her touch. She baked us a delicious white wedding cake with simple lily of the valley icing accents, topped with a festive mini fringe bunting to tie in our theme.

Tell us all about the proposal! Kyle proposed on Christmas morning of 2012. We have been keeping a journal since the day we started dating that we pass back and forth to each other, in which we record every funny moment, road trip, struggle, and happiness. He wrapped the journal as the last gift under the tree. I started getting suspicious when my family was waiting around the gift instead of rushing to the kitchen for breakfast casserole. He had written me a beautiful letter in the notebook, and when I turned the page, I immediately started that silent-happy-cry, because a ring was tied to the notebook binding on the next page. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was intimate and simple, exactly what I had always hoped for.
When did y’all get married? August 2, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 130
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. I walked down the aisle to “Beautiful, Scandalous Night.” The words were perfect for a Christ-centered, mountainside ceremony, and put to words exactly what was happening in that moment. We believe that marriage is the closest thing we’ll experience to a relationship with Christ, and we got married under a beautiful oak tree. The chorus says: “At the wonderful, tragic, mysterious tree, On that beautiful, scandalous night, you and me were atoned by His blood and forever washed white, on that beautiful, scandalous night.” We exited the ceremony to an upbeat tempo of Amazing Grace, to celebrate the joyful occasion of beginning a grace-filled life together. We absolutely love the Avett Brothers and know that they frequently visit Asheville, NC, near our wedding venue, so the perfect first dance song was “Swept Away.”
Describe your wedding flowers. I had a vision for simple and soft florals. My bouquet was a beautiful mix of white and blush pink hydrangea, pale pink lisianthus, and blush pink roses, accented with lambs ear, succulents, and eucalyptus foliage. The stems were wrapped with a band of natural twine. The ceremony aisle was lined with large galvanized buckets filled with a cloud of baby’s breath, personalized with our parents’ wedding dates and our wedding date. The centerpieces were self-assembled with an assortment of whiskey and wine bottles, and were filled with baby’s breath and pink hydrangea.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! Borrowed: The beautiful necklace with diamonds from my grandmother’s engagement ring. Blue: I sewed our initials in blue thread into the inside of my dress. Old: Kyle’s grandmothers lavalier that her mother wore on her wedding day. New: My feather hair piece. Every girl needs to have feathers in her hair at some point in her life!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The biggest challenge was waiting–waiting on marrying the man of my dreams was tough! But I had a lot of planning, details, and showers to get me through it! ;)
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? So many different people came together to help us plan the perfect day. Truly, our day would not have been the same without our loving families, friends, and community. By far, they were the highlight of our day. Also, I loved our giant 36″ balloons tied with handmade tissue paper fringe! They were so fun, and a little violent when the wind caught them, but they brought that extra special touch to our ceremony and photos. Just make sure you have a minivan to haul them in!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? My most memorable moment was walking down the aisle to my future husband, surrounded by people we love and that love us. It was very simple and laid back, yet elegant. I felt like a princess because of the love that I felt walking down that aisle–by everyone sitting in the crowd, by our bridal party, by my husband, teary-eyed, ready to make me his wife.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We plan to make life as much of an adventure as we can, to laugh a lot, to pray a lot, to dance a lot in the living room, and to eat frozen pizza a lot during these first couple years. We can’t wait!
