Even after a big holiday meal, you’d be hard-pressed to find a Southerner who would turn down a slice of pecan pie or red velvet cake for dessert. So many memories are made around Southern food, and during the holidays, when there is nothing more cherished than feeling at home, family recipes find an extra special place in our kitchens and on our tables. We asked some of our sweet (pun intended!) baker friends to share the stories behind the desserts they come back to year after year, no matter how many cakes, pies, and treats they’ve perfected along the way.

Ashley of Ashley Cakes, Raleigh, NC

My absolute favorite thing to bake during the holiday season is my Grandma Mitchell’s homemade carrot cake. For as long as I can remember, she has been baking this yumminess for every Thanksgiving and Christmas family get-together. Since I’m a cake baker, she shared her recipe with me (of course!), and it is one that I will cherish forever! It was fun converting some of her recipe to actual measurements, because, like all great Southern cooks, hers contained instructions like “two shakes” of this and “three pinches” of that! I can’t say that mine will ever be as delicious as hers, but I love carrying on the tradition. With every bite, it takes me back to being a little girl at Grandma’s kitchen table.

Shay Cochrane

Natalie of Chic Sweets, Tampa, FL

These desserts come straight from my home, heart, and family. I have a rather large family, and one of our traditions is cooking up our favorite recipes all day and then getting dressed up to sit down and enjoy our special dishes. It may seem a bit silly that we all get dressed up, but with a house full of boys, I love getting dolled up to sit at the table with family and friends! When we wrap up dinner and our bellies are full, I get to share two of my favorite desserts with my family. I don’t ever like to go too heavy with desserts, especially after a big meal, and my heart-shaped strawberry Nutella mini-pies and white chocolate hot cocoa always hit the spot!

Natalie graciously shared her recipes with us! Download the recipe cards to add to your collection here and here.

Jocelyn of Grandbaby Cakes

This “Real Deal Caramel Cake” is my essential for all holidays because it has such a rich history in my family. The caramel was passed down from my Aunt Beverly, and has been the centerpiece of our holiday baking tradition for years. There is nothing more delicious, and nothing more beautiful, than baking this cake in the kitchen with my family.

Anna of One Belle Bakery, Wilmington, NC

One of my favorite things to bake this time of year is a to-die-for peppermint red velvet cake. Is there a more Southern cake than red velvet? It’s possible, but not according to my sweet Southern granny. In her house, the most delicious deviled eggs you’ve ever tasted always meant spring was here, fresh watermelon slices arranged just so on a polished silver platter meant summer was here, and this cake meant the the holidays were here! I can still smell the peppermint that filled her house when she would make this cake. It’s one of those recipes that will always be special to me and bring back the best memories of time spent with my family. Like most Southern families, food surely brought us together.

What dessert do you bake for the holidays every year? We’d love to hear your stories, too!

I’ve been making this Chocoloate-Pumpkin Layer Cake recipe http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/12/dining/122drex.html?emc=eta1&_r=0 from The New York Times for 6 years now. Sometimes I cheat and use my favorite store-bought chocolate icing, though. I make this for Thanksgiving usually, and it gets me in the holiday spirit every year!

Is there anything more delectable in the early summer than strawberries? Inspired by this striking, yet unassuming berry that reminds us of Southern belles (see V6 for why!), we followed “Pick Your Own Strawberry” signs through Chapel Hill, consulted the Farmer’s Almanac to set a shoot date, rounded up our favorite redheads, and brought Berry Bliss to life.

Cheree Berry created this delightfully bold invitation suite for us. How fun is that envelope liner?

Our beautiful bride, Cate, was the roommate of one our interns! She looked stunning in a striped gown by Hayley Paige and bold red lipstick. Fun fact: her bouquet wrap is actually a delicate scarf!

It is no secret that the SW gals are smitten with LulaKate. Not only did we love having their darling custom dresses in this shoot, we were also tickled pink to wear LulaKate at the V6 launch party last week! Love these dresses as much as we do? Don’t miss the end of this post for a surprise! :)

Even though we had these simply elegant boutonnieres on hand, the only dapper gent in this shoot was MacKenzie‘s son, Pax! Isn’t he adorable in his little bow tie?

Emily commented in Sweet Corns Sweethearts that the area we live in is sometimes photo shoot-ready, even without our help, and this was certainly one of those cases. On the day of this shoot, the field next to the strawberries was bursting with pretty red clover. Thanks for that one, North Carolina!

We were truly spoiled to have the most beautiful, luscious strawberry desserts gracing this shoot. Ashley Cakes made the lovely cake, and Little Sugarbakers whipped up the mini desserts.

There were so many amazing elements in this shoot, and we are excited to share two of our favorites!

We’re giving away all three LulaKate dresses (one in size 4, two in size 8) and a pair of red Nina Forbes shoes (size 10). For a chance to win one of these items, leave a comment telling us your favorite thing about this shoot! Don’t forget to specify which item you’d like (including which dress size, if applicable). We can’t wait to hear from you!

I also just love it when redheads own their gorgeous hair and wear bright colors. I am a LulaKate lover so my favorite is definitely the dress! I love everything about this shoot! My husband and I got engaged in the strawberry patch of a farm near our house where we first fell in love! What I love most about this shoot is the fact that you are embracing redheads! So many women are dying their hair to cover it up. Southern Weddings teaches women to love themselves and I find this shoot empowering! This dress, in a size 10, would be perfect to wear to client meetings at local wineries and estates :)

Especially that gorgeous gown (those stripes!), the big, floppy, elegant sun hat, and the energy from the bright, vibrant colors. What a gift, those red clovers and the perfect weather. So blessed. Great work, ladies! (oh, and I think a size 8 would be just about perfect! LulaKate is fab and I am so excited that you’re giving away dresses in my size!)

My favorite thing was seeing the previous post of all of your preparation for the shoot. The fun you were having, the creativity AND THEN as I viewed the actual post, to see the magic the photographer created to capture all of your wonderful ideas. The angles, the focus, the “just right” cropping. This is all a true talent. It was so evident from the two posts what magic must occur. Love, Love, Love ! Could pick one photo but this post is too good to over look the finished product! WOW! Love the size 4 dress.

  43. avatar Laura Caroline reply

I would have to say little Pax was my favorite part of the shoot. He is just adorable eating the strawberries in his bow tie! And I would absolutely love those stunning shoes!

  44. avatar Rebecca reply

I just love the mini pies in this shoot! Also, the photo of the table in between the two strawberry fields is just stunning! I would love the size 4 dress!

  45. avatar Kaylan reply

Why do I love this shoot? Because red is my signature color! Adorable. When I was little and visiting my grandparents in West Point, GA, my sweet Pop would go to the grocery store just to get my favorite spread for the biscuits- strawberry preserves. If only I were getting married in strawberry season instead of Christmas! (Don’t worry– there’s still lots of red in my wedding! Including floor length Red LulaKate bridesmaids dresses!) If I won, I’d look so snazzy in the size 4 striped dress. Love love love everything.

  46. avatar Kaylan reply

That first image is killer! Love, love, love everything! Seeing it all makes me want to throw on a beautiful dress and run into a strawberry field myself. I love every element of the shoot, and mainly the fact that it feels so fresh! Such a beautiful sight on some of these dreary fall days. I would adore that Lula Kate size 8 dress and possibly never take it off! Spectacular images and awesome post Lisa!

OH MY GOODNESS! I loved this shoot!!! The red is delicious! I think my favorite part though, is how creative the invites are with the “packet” of strawberries detailing more of the events of the wedding. I’m sadly obsessed with stationary! But also, since I’m a Wolfpack fan, I’d love to win the LulaKate dress in a size 8! :)

  54. avatar Stewart reply

My favorite part of this shoot is the red & white striped ribbon used around the plates at the place settings. I also love how it carries elsewhere like in the bouquet & boutonniere wraps. It’s no lie that I could use a pair of red shoes- and I just happen to be size 10!

Oh my stars, we are so excited to share more of our beautiful V6 Texas shoot! After V5’s beloved Yellow Rose shoot, we were thrilled to bring this stellar team of Texas vendors together again to celebrate another classic Texan folk song–this time, the beloved “Deep in the Heart of Texas.” Stefanie Miles planned and styled the most beautiful setup in the middle of a North Texas wheat field, and every detail was captured to perfection by Ryan Ray. Unsurprisingly, the results were truly breathtaking!

Bows + Arrows created the most exquisite bouquets, using all different white blooms and the prettiest ribbon from FrouFrou Chic. We love how the flowers pop against our night sky-inspired color palette!

One of our top must-haves for this shoot was a cowboy groom. Blair certainly fit the bill in his handsome hat, and I’m sure y’all will agree, that lasso is the perfect finishing touch.

Oh, this dress! I can hardly wait to print the picture below for my bulletin board. There were audible cheers from the office when Marissa told us we had secured this sparkly Monique Lhuillier for our shoot!

One of our absolute favorite comments from SW readers so far has been that our V6 cover couple looks so in love. Well, friends, that’s because they are! We’re truly delighted to have a real married couple on our cover: our sweet friend (and BRV member!) Christina of Christina Leigh Events and her husband. Their love truly shines off the page and we think they represent our mission so beautifully.

We’re overjoyed with how the details of this shoot came together. From a gauzy backdrop with handpainted calligraphy to flower girl tutus made of 250+ yards of tulle, everything looks so stunning against the open landscape that is so typical of Texas.

Could this tablescape get any prettier? LOOT Vintage Rentals brought some of their incredible inventory all the way from Austin to be part of the shoot. We’re also smitten with the star garland!

We’ve featured some lovely pies in SW history, but these just may be some of the prettiest. Layered Bake Shop hit it out of the park with luscious blueberry and pecan pies, complete with dreamy star details. The sparkly “Just Married” shooting star cutout is a show stopper!

We are so smitten with the V6 cover and couldn’t be happier with how this shoot turned out! Be sure to check out our print edition for lots more! We’d love to know, what’s your favorite detail of this shoot?

Stefanie Miles is a delightful member of our Blue Ribbon Vendor Directory!
