Rachel says finding their venue, the gorgeous Rustix Manor, was fate, but I would also vote that fate played a part in Rachel and James’ love story! Rachel was actually waiting on another date when James caught her eye at a party. After dancing well into the night, these two knew they were meant to be. If photos could talk, I’m pretty sure these beautiful ones from Melissa Schollaert would tell the same story. While reading their interview and scrolling this lovely wedding, I couldn’t help but think about how sweet everything was. The love these two have for each other, the adorable babe in a wagon, and ending the night with dancing around a bonfire and making s’mores – yep, sweet as can be!

Both of us wanted to see each other for the first time when I walked down the aisle–it was just something that we both had always known we wanted to do. I totally understand why people do a first look though–I can imagine it makes the time between the ceremony and the reception a lot less stressful–but I wouldn’t have changed our decision.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I went to Bridals by Lori with my mom, my sister, James’s mom, and three of my bridesmaids. Everyone picked out a few dresses for me to try, but when I put on the fourth dress, I knew it was the one. It was actually one that the consultant picked out after I told her what I liked, and once I saw myself in it, I knew that I wouldn’t like anything else as much as this one. It was a form-fitting, ivory lace dress with a keyhole back by Marisa.

Y’all, I may not be the biggest fan of flower crowns (mostly because I’m jealous I can’t pull one off!), but these delicate, perfectly-sized ones are amazing!

I wanted the flowers to reflect the feel of the wedding, which was light, romantic, and Southern. My bouquet included ranunculus, garden roses, stock flowers, and feverfew. The bridesmaid bouquets were pink stock flowers and their flower crowns were pink wax flowers. The men’s boutonnieres were pink roses with feverfew, and James’ was a white rose with feverfew. The flowers girls wore baby’s breath crowns.

She is just too cute!!

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? While we were planning the wedding, we lived in Nashville, but we were both born and raised in Georgia and both of our families still live there, so having the wedding in Georgia was a no-brainer. I knew I wanted a rustic, outdoor wedding, and we looked at several venues before finding Rustix Manor. We were about to sign with a totally different venue before my mom went to lunch with a group of friends, and one of them told my mom she should check out Rustix. When my mom saw it, she absolutely knew it was exactly what I was looking for and we booked it before I even saw it in person. I like to think it was fate!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The whole wedding had such a Southern feel, first and foremost through the weather. It was 85 degrees in October, and our guests were fanning themselves with the programs and I was taking cover in the shade to avoid sunburn. The ceremony was on the stoop of a tiny “mock” chapel in the middle of a field, which made it seem like a small town chapel wedding. At the reception, the band played everything from classic rock to country while a bonfire blazed and guests danced and made s’mores. We even had a UGA win that day, so my bridesmaids and I called the dawgs! It was a perfect Georgia wedding.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We agree that the best detail of the wedding was the venue itself. It was absolutely perfect and met all of our needs: we had a chapel, a poolside location for cocktail hour, a stage for the band, three bars, a firepit, and the most eclectic Southern decor.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? So many special moments come to mind, but I would say one of the most memorable moments was when I was dancing with my dad and ended up losing my cool. The song “Today I Met The Boy I’m Gonna Marry” by Darlene Love was playing, which brought out a lot of emotions for both of us, since we’ve always loved the movie Father of the Bride. James says the most memorable part was seeing me walk down the aisle.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Our wedding cake was almond pound cake with raspberry filling and vanilla buttercream frosting. I wanted it to look simple, but elegant, and taste delicious. The groom’s cake was chocolate cake with vanilla filling and chocolate frosting. It was topped with chocolate-covered strawberries and adorned with a big Georgia “G.”

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We first met on spring break in Destin, FL back in 2009. I was with a group from my sorority and he was with a group from his fraternity. Both of our groups went to UGA. I was actually interested in one of James’ friends, and when we were back at school, his friend invited me to their fraternity party. While he was getting me a drink, I saw James, and we ended up dancing together the entire night. I guess the rest is history!
Tell us all about the proposal! I had been out of town with my mom and sister for a week, and when we came back, James wanted to take me to a nice dinner. He took me to Dominick’s in downtown Norcross, and after dinner, we walked around near the fountain area and he said something about our future that I don’t exactly remember. He then knelt and proposed and gave me the most beautiful engagement ring that he had picked out himself. He had arranged for our families to be together waiting for us at my parent’s house, so afterwards, we were all able to celebrate together!
When did y’all get married? October 5, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? About 225
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did not write our own vows. I knew I would be way too nervous, but I think James would have preferred saying our own vows if I hadn’t adamantly vetoed it early on.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We chose three scriptures to be read by our siblings: my brother read Genesis 2:18-24, James’ sister Stephanie read 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, and my sister Jill read Colossians 3:12-17.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We had a very talented trio of women play stringed instruments for the ceremony. They played “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desire” when my grandmothers were being seated, “Canon in D” when my dad walked me down the aisle, “How Great Thou Art” when we took communion as husband and wife, and “Wedding March” when we walked up the aisle together. We both thought all these songs were so beautiful, especially when played by stringed instruments. The band at our reception, Sweetwater Junction, was also extremely talented. They played our first dance song, “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green, which we love, because it’s so classic, fun, and upbeat.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Since the whole wedding was outside, our biggest challenge was coming up with a plan B in case it rained. I must have checked the weather 10 times a day the week of the wedding, especially when the forecast called for rain on our wedding day. Our plan B was to put a tent where we had the reception and then have both the ceremony and reception there, which would have still been beautiful and fun, but I’m so glad we were able to stick to the original plan.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? All of our vendors were so awesome and we were very happy to have all of them there, but the owners of the venue went above and beyond. They would let us come over anytime we asked (the venue is actually their home), their daughters helped drive guests around in golf carts, and they were always so friendly and accommodating. I asked for a bonfire in 80 degree weather, and they said sure, why not? They definitely made everything from the initial planning to the day-of much less stressful.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Try not to stress about it too much. I know that is way easier said than done, but you really just have to tell yourself that the day will be beautiful and memorable no matter what. I couldn’t even talk about the wedding two weeks beforehand because it got me so worked up to think about. I wish I could have told myself to relax and not stress. It’s supposed to be a joyous time, so enjoy it!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We still reside in Nashville and are loving married life. I’ve enjoyed trying out new recipes and we’ve had a lot of fun furnishing and decorating our apartment together. We adopted a little kitten a month after getting married and he’s been the perfect addition to our new family. I’m looking forward to future trips and vacations with both of our families and our own kids, and we are both excited for our family to one day grow.

Something we hear frequently from brides is how overwhelming the many sources of wedding inspiration can be. As wonderful as wedding blogs (yes, even this one) and Pinterest are, it can be far too easy to lose sight of what’s important after you’ve been scrolling through ideas for what seems like hours. That’s one of the many reasons we created the Sweet Tea Society: to remind us–and you!–what really matters when planning your big day. One of my favorite lines is “We believe in history and heritage, and honoring both to create a deeply meaningful beginning to married life.” Farris and Taylor did this in spades. From the big things like the chapel where they were married (Farris was the third generation in her family to say “I do” there!) to the little details, like the s’mores bar lovingly crafted by Taylor’s mama, everything about their Nashville wedding was personal and sentimental.

Hugs to Kristyn Hogan for sharing Farris and Taylor’s wedding with us!

We met through mutual friends during our sophomore year at the University of Tennessee. The attraction was definitely always there and it was obvious to the many friends that kept encouraging us to date. One night, we were watching a movie with a bunch of friends, and before we knew it, all of them had left and lit a ton of candles on their way out. We looked at each other and just laughed because I don’t think either one of us was ready for a relationship at that point. Fast forward a couple years, there was a girl who liked Taylor and would not leave him alone. She decided to come to town to visit him and he did what any man would do–asked me to be his fake girlfriend. Of course, I agreed, and our friends decided we should hold hands to “make it look official.” Believe it or not, that was one powerful hand hold…the rest was history. Funny fact: the girl did not even show up. ;)

Tell us all about the proposal! My family has a cottage in Monteagle that is very special to our family. Taylor and I were spending Thanksgiving apart, but we decided that he would meet me the day after Thanksgiving in Monteagle. When he arrived, he asked to take a walk to “The Point” (our favorite cliff top view). He laid out a blanket on the cliff and we were enjoying the views when he pulled out a book. He had written an entire book on our story! He read the entire story to me, and at the end, he read, “On November 23rd, Taylor proposed to Farris.” I remember thinking, “When is November 23rd??” but before I could finish my thought, he pulled me on my feet, got on one knee, and asked me to be his wife! Of course, I said yes, and after much rejoicing, he pointed out his brother hiding in the woods with a camera. We walked down the path to an opening where both of our families were there to congratulate us. It was absolutely perfect.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Yes, we did! I get nervous easily and Taylor can always calm my nerves, so we decided to see each other and pray together alone before the ceremony. Best decision I’ve ever made.

My great grandmother and my grandmother were both married in the same chapel as I was. There is something magical about memories that happen in the same place over a period of time.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We started writing our vows when we happened to come across my parents’ vows and realized that they promised everything we wanted to promise to each other. We changed some wording in their vows and made it our own. My two favorite lines were “By God’s grace, I will affirm and challenge you in becoming all that God has purposed you to be to the church and the world, and will serve Him together with you as one, giving Him the glory and honor” and “I will support you in the pursuit of your dreams and cherish you above all the possessions and honors of this life.”
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? 1 Corinthians 13: 1-8. The typical wedding scripture is usually verses 4-8 but I actually love verses 1-3 the most: “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”

I knew I wanted Kristyn Hogan as our photographer and wouldn’t budge on that and I am SO happy I didn’t…I mean, just look at these pictures! The pictures are the one thing you will keep from your wedding for the rest of your lives to help you remember what a blessed day it was!

Describe your wedding flowers. Amazing. My mom works at Village of Flowers and they are loads of fun! Everyone at Village of Flowers chipped in and made it all possible. I could not have been more happy with how beautiful the flowers made both venues look!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The s’mores bar and fire pit at our reception. My mother-in-law worked on every little detail from the s’mores bar inspiration I had collected on Pinterest and my dreams came true when I saw the final product! My parents brought in the fire pit to roast the marshmallows. It was a hit at the reception!

When did y’all get married? October 12, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 250
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Walking down the aisle, we had Matt Wertz singing “I Will Not Take My Love Away.” It is such a beautiful song about unconditional love, and it reminds me of the love of Christ that made our relationship possible. Walking back up the aisle, Sam Levine played “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay, just because we love it and it sounds awesome with a band.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our venue was also quite Southern, as it was a gorgeous barn on a local Nashville farm.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Learning that nothing will be perfect. God had to teach me that the wedding was not the part we needed to be most prepared for…it was the marriage. I was so caught up in every little detail that I sometimes forgot that the whole reason for the celebration was my marriage to Taylor. I am a perfectionist, so it was hard to let go of the small stuff and begin spending time on the relationship stuff–the stuff that really matters AFTER the wedding!
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? It was very special to have one of our favorite artists, Matt Wertz, and my cousin, Joelle May, sing at our ceremony. It was breathtaking, I don’t think there was a dry eye in the chapel.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? I knew there was something special about our first kiss after we became husband and wife, but later, we heard why from our parents. They told us that as soon as we kissed, the sun shown so brightly through the windows, straight on the two of us like a spotlight. I also loved walking down the aisle and seeing all the amazing people who have supported and loved us, and then looking up to see my amazing husband crying. I don’t think I have ever felt so much love!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? During the planning process, keep your sole focus on your relationship with your fiancé. We both got so much out of pre-marital counseling. Marriage brings about a lot of changes that you never had to deal with as a dating couple. No one can ever be fully prepared for marriage, but preparing yourself enough to get through it together is worth it.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We bought a sweet little house and have been decorating it together and making it our own. We love to travel and hope to travel around the world within the next couple of years. We looked forward to living together and boy, is it fun! It’s just like living with your best friend who you also happen to be in love with. It is amazing how much you learn about a person just by living with them. We have been surprised by how much we work as a team when cooking and doing dishes together. I love that no one has to hold the weight of any one thing–we have an equal-responsibility household. We love to go on walks together and have recently got into “juicing.” Our honeymoon in St. Lucia was absolutely amazing, and my favorite part about getting back to real life was returning to our new home together and being able to make dinner, eat by candlelight, and talk about all the amazing memories we had made over the past week.

Brittany and Ryan met in a (relatively) nontraditional way (Match.com!), but their wedding had all the hallmarks of a classic Southern wedding: traditional vows, a lace gown, garden roses, and delicious fare including pork sliders, mac and cheese, and biscuits (yum!). My favorite part of their celebration, though? That would have to be their dessert (glazed donuts and mini peach pie!). The Taylor Grady House was the perfect setting for their spring soiree, and Scobey Photography with Sara Harper captured everything beautifully!

I just love pre-ceremony shots. Can’t you feel the anticipation in the air?

Brittany’s scallop lace-edge veil is gorgeous!

My something blue was a garter that my sister-in-law made. My something old was a piece of my grandmother’s wedding dress that my mom pinned into mine. My something borrowed was a cameo that my husband’s grandmother let me borrow — I pinned it on my bouquet. My something new were undergarments my best friend Cindy bought me!

My wedding flowers were absolutely stunning. There were clusters of soft peaches, pinks, creams, pale grey and mint. It was an explosion of pastel, a variety of textures, depth and romance. I wanted to keep everything very natural. I didn’t want anything overly manicured. The peach David Austin roses were my favorite. I just wanted to bury my face in them, but I didn’t (at least while anyone was watching).

I walked down the aisle to “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles. This song just makes me happy — it’s like a modern day lullaby. Although I’ve been blessed with such a wonderful life, there have certainly been some rough patches. This song, in its simplicity and heartening melody, is a sign that everything is going to be okay. To me, it represents those little moments of clarity and reassurance, those signs that point ahead. Also, my dad is a huge Beatles fan, so I knew it would be a special moment.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Ryan and I actually were married twice on April 13. We were married in a small Catholic ceremony in the local Catholic church in the morning. Then, we had our large outdoor ceremony that afternoon. Since we had already seen each other (sans wedding dress) that morning, we decided to wait for the “big reveal” as I walked down the aisle. It was the right decision.
Did you write your own vows? We said traditional vows. There is something so sacred, beautiful and romantic about speaking the same words as MILLIONS who have made this commitment before us.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? My bridesmaid, Lauren Cook, read “Love” by Roy Croft. It’s really simple, yet it strikes a chord with me. A little snippet: “I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you.”

My new last name is Mason, so that was a theme at our wedding. Drinks were served in mason jars, and we even had a mason jar emblem on our cocktail napkins. During our cocktail hour, we served a peach specialty drink as a nod to Georgia. We also had Southern fare reinvented, including pork sliders, mac ‘n’ cheese and cheese biscuits. Later in the evening, we danced the night away to the Answer Band, a good ole’ fashioned soul band.

These sweet notes to each guest remind me of our Something Old, Something New shoot from V5! What a lovely gesture toward your loved ones!

I love the shot of Brittany + Ryan practicing their first dance juxtaposed with their big moment! Looks like they did a great job :)

Wedding donuts: always a winner in my book.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story.
We met like many couples meet these days, on Match.com. I had gone on a quite a few unsuccessful dates and had actually decided not to renew my membership. But five days before my membership ended, Ryan walked into my life. I’ve never looked back.
Tell us all about the proposal!
Two years prior to meeting Ryan, another man walked into my life and stole my heart. Finley, my wheaten terrier, is such a large part of our lives that Ryan knew he had to be worked into the proposal. On a rainy Tuesday evening, I arrived home to find Finley standing with the apartment door ajar. He led me down a path of “paw prints” with little love notes. As I winded around the apartment, I heard our song playing and was finally led into our dining room where Ryan was waiting on bended knee. There were tears, hugs and maybe even a few excited barks. Finley also sported a dog tag that asked, “Will you marry me?” It was lovely and perfect.
When did y’all get married?
April 13, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding?
120 people, 1 dog.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress.
My wedding dress was a lace, fit-n-flare Allure Couture, with a sweetheart neckline, satin ribbon and just a touch of bling on the belt. The dress was romantic and classic, yet the floral rosettes at the bottom added a touch of whimsy and fun.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert.
We had a variety of cupcakes, mini peach pies and glazed donuts, courtesy of Ike & Jane cafe.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was:
I loved all the vintage books that I picked up at flea markets over the past year. We had them scattered on the tables and it added such a lovely pop of color.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?
Staying within the budget. The end.
What range did your wedding budget fall into?
$25,000-$50,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding?
Sara Johnson, my wedding planner, was phenomenal. I wish she’d help me plan all the major events in my life!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?
There were so many little moments that I cherish. My dad is a big golfer, so I gave him an engraved ball marker right before we walked down the aisle. That was a special moment. Also, my mom helping me put my veil on and watching Finley arrive were special, too. All the girls gathered around the window and watched him with his handler.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding?
Don’t sweat the small stuff. They should create that little bathroom book for weddings. And then when you retreat to the bathroom to have panic attacks, it’ll be there to give you perspective.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life?
We can’t wait to buy a house! And then we will most likely start a family.
