Last week, I was honored to join a few fellow Southern gals on a panel with Lover.ly to chat about Southern weddings. A great tip discussed was exploring different venue options that truly mean something special to the couple and their family and then making them your own. I think Baylor + Daniel hit the nail on the head by choosing the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, which has been a retreat for four generations of Baylor’s family. They then used farm tables, lace-tied flowers and strawberry basil lemonade to create a sense of relaxed, easy-going Southern charm. Gosh, I love that!

Thanks to one of our delightful Blue Ribbon Vendors, Elaine Palladino for sharing this sweet day with us!

My something borrowed was my grandmother’s pearls, something blue was my mother-in-law’s garter, something old was a pearl bracelet given to me by my dad, and something new was my shoes.

Describe your wedding flowers. I wanted flowers arrangements that were romantic and reminiscent of a garden’s natural beauty. Our florist, Veronica, created various centerpieces of moss-covered boxes and terrariums filled with peonies, garden roses, jasmine, anemones, clematis, spray roses and succulents. The pink, coral and magenta flowers were so luscious, and the best part was that no two arrangements were the same.

We decided to do a first look to relieve some of the nerves before our ceremony. Seeing each other in a more private setting among our closest family and wedding party was a really special moment we will always cherish. By the time we walked down the aisle, we felt no anxiety–just pure joy.

Y’all, this doll-baby is way too cute! Would it be wrong if I actually pinched those cheeks?

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The beautiful chuppah that my dad, cousin, sister and I built was my favorite detail. During the days leading up to the wedding, it meant a lot to have quality time spent with my family while sanding and staining the wood. They finished building it as I got ready and it was draped in ivory fabric and decorated with flowers. It was truly a labor of love and so meaningful to have as the focal point of our ceremony.

What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Our guests traveled from all over the country to be at our wedding in Miami, so we wanted to make sure they truly felt a sense of locale and culture. To create this, we had a cigar bar, which included a local cigar roller, and a mojito bar serving two varieties: traditional and blood orange. These details were a huge hit with our guests and accomplished just what we had hoped–an authentic South Florida experience.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Our cake was ivory and decorated in lace designs and flowers. Each tier was a different flavor–vanilla lemon, vanilla almond and vanilla rum–and all were delicious. We also had a dessert bar that included adorable mini key lime pies, macarons, eclairs and fruit tartlets. My mouth waters thinking about all the sweets!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We were both planning separately to move to Colorado. Danny answered my ad searching for a roommate and we met for the first time two weeks before he moved in. We only made it three months as roommates before we started dating–there was just too much chemistry to ignore.
Tell us all about the proposal! We were living in Maui when Danny proposed. One spring weekend, we went on a little getaway to the mountains on the island of Lanai. Danny had been acting strange all weekend, and after we returned home, I confessed my disappointment, since I had anticipated a proposal. He said he was sorry for giving me the wrong idea and even suggested we weren’t ready yet! Little did I know, he already had the ring. I was folding laundry in our bedroom that evening when I walked out into the hallway to find Danny on his knee.
When did y’all get married? May 26, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 150
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. While my mom was visiting from Florida, we went dress shopping in Virginia. I tried one dress on that I couldn’t stop thinking about, but I continued my search. Six months and several dresses later, I went back to that first store and tried on the same dress–I knew it was “the one.”
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? With the help of Danny’s cousin, who was our officiant, we wrote our vows based on others that we had heard and read. My favorite part was hearing him say to me “I, Daniel Edward Knoll, take you, Baylor Guyton Young, to be my wife, my partner in life and my one true love…I give you my hand, my heart, and my love, from this day forward, for as long as we both shall live.”
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? My sister-in-law recited the Hands Ceremony and a friend of ours read an Apache Marriage Blessing, which ended in “may your days be good and long upon the earth.”
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Our ceremony music was performed by a string trio and was absolutely beautiful. I decided to walk down the aisle to Pachelbel’s “Canon” because the song has always made me so happy. Our first dance was “Crazy Love” by Van Morrison. It was romantic and relaxed, a feeling which seemed to perfectly represent our wedding and us as a couple.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The Biscayne Bay Yacht Club is one of the oldest members-only yacht clubs in the South and has been a retreat for my family for four generations. We enhanced the setting with farm tables, lace-tied flowers and strawberry basil lemonade with paper straws. Being out on the lawn at the water’s edge really helped to instill a sense of relaxed, easy-going Southern charm.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Planning a wedding from afar was a bit challenging. We got engaged while living in Hawaii and moved to Virginia to be closer to friends and family, but still found ourselves many miles from South Florida. We were only able to meet with our vendors in person a month before the wedding, and all other planning had to be done through phone and email.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? My most memorable moment of the day was our first look. We had originally decided that we didn’t want to do it, but changed our minds, and I’m so glad we did! It was really special to be able to spend that time with Danny and take a moment to escape the chaos of the day. I’ll never forget the look in his eyes when he saw me in my wedding dress for the first time.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? If at all possible, make the dinner and dancing portion of your reception an hour longer. We had a typical five-hour reception that flew by. It’s worth setting up in advance so that you can enjoy the evening and don’t have to worry about paying your vendors to stay longer.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We recently returned from our honeymoon in Iceland and Spain. With all of the planning behind us, we are looking forward to simply spending quality time with each other and our families. We heard our first dance song at a friend’s wedding last month. All of the incredible memories of our wedding night came rushing back, and it was surreal for us to already be looking back on everything. It all goes by so fast.

Of course, it’s not hard for me to adore a love story that began at a baseball game! And for Rochelle + Casey, what started as a simple trip to see the Braves play turned into so much more as their relationship bloomed through a long-distance dating and engagement period. I love how Rochelle intentionally scheduled meetings with vendors during their planning time while Casey was in town visiting, so he could be a part of the process, too! They also worked with their planner, Brandee Gaar from Blush, to create details that meant something not only to themselves, but to their guests, as well.

Special thanks to Chelsea Patricia for sharing Rochelle + Casey’s sweet day with us!

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! Something borrowed and blue was a sapphire ring that all my father’s sisters and my oldest sister wore on their wedding days. My something old was my father’s Sunday watch, wrapped around my bouquet. My something new was my new dress and boots!

I sort of had a style of dress in mind that I wanted, but I was certain I knew what I did not want. I knew I loved Monique Lhuillier dresses, so we started there. A couple of dresses were picked out because I wanted a belt, some lace, and a short train. THE dress was almost passed by, but my mother pointed out that it had a belt-looking sash, and said I should try it. I honestly didn’t like the dress on the hanger. As soon as I put it on though, I immediately thought about Casey, and I knew he would love it. I just knew it was the one. My mother and sister loved it, too. It looked like me and went with our wedding theme perfectly.

My bouquet was elegant and hand-tied, with a base of white hydrangea blooms, wonderful white mini calla lily blooms tucked into the center, and white freesia and ranunculus throughout. The bridesmaids had hand-tied bouquets of all orange blooming flowers: orange mini calla lily blooms, orange ranunculus, orange freesia, and accents of orange cymbudium. Casey had a white freesia boutonniere and the groomsmen had matching freesias, but in orange. The altar had a series of wooden doors with two pedestals of orange and green florals in between. The church reception had birch-covered cylinders that held a selection of assorted orange flowers. The dinner tables had tall glass vases filled with birch branches in a bed of open white hydrangea blooms.

Love their custom aisle runner, and this festive ribbon wand exit!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? I wore cowboy boots under my dress for the whole day. The bridesmaids and I wore pearl jewelry. Our drinks were served in mason jars. There were also flowers displayed in mason jars down the aisle and throughout the reception and dinner. We had a wood theme carried from the invitations to the dinner. At the dinner, we served individual pies and banana pudding for desserts. We had corn hole, horse shoes, ladder golf, and life size jenga games to play at the dinner. The dinner was held at the Winter Park Farmer’s Market, which is an old train depot. At the dinner, the bridesmaids all changed into their own pairs of brown boots. The food was Southern comfort food.

At the church, we included cookies from family recipes. We asked some of our aunts for their favorite cookie recipes and displayed them as desserts with flavored milk. At the dinner, we had an assortment of pies and banana pudding. The pies were favorites of ours: peach, chocolate silk, apple, and pecan. We also had an ice cream truck come with an assortment of flavors for our guests! The ice cream was made fresh and frozen by liquid nitrogen!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. In 2006, my father passed away. My family and I were living in Osteen, Florida. My father’s best friend, Brian, was a youth minister that was called to a church in Newnan, Georgia in 2007. It’s because of the bond between Brian and my father that my family and I continue to visit him up in Georgia. Casey was a member of this church and a member of Brian’s new youth group. We met for the first time on Father’s Day of 2007 and became friends. It was a tradition for Brian and I to go to Atlanta Braves games each time I visited. It was not until one visit to Georgia in August of 2010, that Casey was asked by Brian to take me to the Braves game, where we finally hung out for the first time. The rest is history. We began talking more and visiting each other, and our long-distance relationship started.
Tell us all about the proposal! On June 21, 2012, while Casey was visiting Florida, he planned to take me to New Smyrna Beach to go kayaking at JB’s Fish Camp. While kayaking, we were so close to dolphins and manatees. It was a gorgeous day! After, Casey asked me to walk out on the dock with him. We have a hobby of geocaching (kind of like a treasure hunt with a GPS) and Casey told me he made a cache just for me, which was hidden out on the dock somewhere. We started searching on the dock for the box. When we found it, Casey had written a sweet note on the book inside that read “You are going to make my life so much better, check Yes or No.” I just started crying (not the reaction I thought I would have). I turned around to Casey saying the geocache represents us and our marriage. It’s something that we love to do and will always be around for others to enjoy as well. Then, he got down on one knee and brought out the ring. Of course, I said YES after a few tears! We were lucky to have Casey’s parents taking “secret” pictures of the event.
When did y’all get married? July 13, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? About 250
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Yes, Casey and I did a first look and we are so thankful that we did. We both wanted to get our nerves out. Casey is the more emotional one and we thought it would be good to get the initial emotion out and have some special alone time before the rush of the day. It ended up that I was the one crying all day. But, we both agree that we were able to enjoy the ceremony more because we were able to get our nerves out earlier. It also made it easier to get all of the family and bridal pictures done before the ceremony so we could go straight into celebrating with our friends and family!
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? No, we did not write our own vows, but they were not traditional vows either. Our vows were very Christ-centered. They talked about Christ’s love for the church and how that is reflected in our marriage.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We did not have any readings in our ceremony but instead, we did a Unity Cross. We built a cross that represents the man and woman in marriage. This was held together with three pegs that represent how our marriage is held together with God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. The bridal party processional, which included my grandmother and Casey’s mother, was a song that Casey sang and recorded for me. It was a Valentine’s day gift one year. He sang and recorded a cover of Elvis Presley’s “Falling in Love With You.” The song we left to was Holley Maher’s “Perfect Day.” We thought it was the perfect song to explain what that day meant to us. Our first dance was to a cover of Jason Mraz’s “I Wont Give Up.” It was sung and recorded by my little sister’s boyfriend, Justin Slaven. We wanted to use songs recorded by Casey and Justin because they both love music and we love sharing their great talents! It also gave it a more personal touch.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Casey’s favorite detail was my dress! He kept saying all night that he just loved it. My favorite detail was the dinner we had for family and close friends after the church reception. This gave us time to really celebrate and enjoy time with those closest to us.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? All of the vendors we worked with were great! Two that I am beyond pleased with are Blush by Brandee Gaar and Lee James Floral. Without the help of Brandee and her team, the wedding would not have been as wonderful as it was. Lee James took my vision for the flowers and decor and blew me away. The flowers were the part I was most nervous about, but wow! The ceremony was beautiful! The flowers were just amazing. He really listened to what I wanted and gave me more than I thought I wanted! I can’t imagine the day with out those two!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Casey’s most memorable moment was our first look. He was excited to see me for the first time on the day that I became his wife. My most memorable moment was right before I walked down the aisle. I thought I had gotten all the crying out and I was so excited to walk down the aisle, but as soon as they opened the doors, my mother turned to me and said, “I love you.” The flood gates opened. It is not like me to cry that much, but I just couldn’t stop. I told my mom halfway down the aisle, “This was not part of the plan,” but my mom just told me it’s ok and enjoy the moment.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Casey and I are looking forward to living in the same state! During the time we were dating and engaged, I lived in Florida and he lived in Georgia. We are beyond excited to just go on date nights anytime we want and to see each other for more than just the weekend. We can finally have a “normal” relationship and be together, just the two of us!!

Today, I spent most my morning editing Miss V6 (don’t worry, after she’s printed, she’ll become a Mrs.!), and one thing I could’t get out of my head throughout the entire time was how important marriage is. We always say that a strong marriage can change the world, and I truly believe that. That’s why, I’m so excited for Danielle + Chris! Just hearing why they chose the traditional 1 Corinthians 13:4-13 reading makes me jump for joy! Danielle said “I think that those very simple words encompass what a marriage should be about: loving each other in a selfless way and only wanting the best for our partners without a selfish thought.”

The love that these two have for each other absolutely shines right through these lovely photos from Erika Delgado!

What a fun touch, adding a little note to the envelope liner!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I saw the Romona Keveza dress on a wedding website and knew it was the dress. My mother and I drove two and a half hours to try the dress on and that was it! I loved the fact that my dress wasn’t strapless, yet had that same look. I knew I wanted lace and something different, and that is exactly what I got!

Aren’t these little darlings just the cutest?!

Our wedding was all on the beach so I wanted to stick to a very crisp and chic look. I did a ton of white flowers and I love anything big and lush. There was a lot of white hydrangeas, white peonies, and white orchids. At the last minute, I decided to throw some light pink peonies into the bridesmaids bouquets to add a little pop of color. We used tons of lanterns everywhere and there were white rose petals at the bottoms of the lanterns to dress them up a bit. I really loved working with Deb from Floral Fantasy–she was able to make my vision a reality! She is truly talented at listening to what her brides want. The only way we could communicate was through email and phone because of the distance and she blew me away with the flowers on the day of the wedding!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Yes! Our photographer said that it could be very romantic and private. I loved it because since it was our time alone before the ceremony, we were able to get the jitters out and have a great time!

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? No, we didn’t write our own vows. We did write each other very sweet notes to read privately before the ceremony, so that was very meaningful and a private moment between us. We wanted to have a traditional ceremony and we decided on very traditional readings as well. My cousin is a reverend and he officiated the ceremony for us.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We had the traditional Corinthians 13:4-13. I think that those very simple words encompass what a marriage should be about: loving each other in a selfless way and only wanting the best for our partners without a selfish thought.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? My most memorable moment would be our first look. My parents walked me over to the little island where it was taking place. I walked out to meet Chris, but from afar, my parents were there too. Once the ceremony and reception started, everyone wants a “piece” of the newlyweds, but those few moments were completely peaceful for me and I loved the fact that both my parents were there to watch such a special moment. It wasn’t planned, but it was perfect. I think sometimes the best parts of a wedding are the ones we don’t plan out!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We used mason jars as each of our guests’ water cups at their tables, but they also doubled as place cards to tell guests where to sit at each table. Our calligrapher wrote each person’s first name on a tag and I tied them onto the mason jars with colored twine. To top it off, there was a colorful paper straw! The chalkboards we used from Chalkshop also had a very Southern feel.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? My biggest challenge was being six hours away from where the event was going to take place. We saw the Postcard Inn in Islamorada by chance, and once we walked on the property, I knew it was perfect place to have our outdoor beach wedding. However, I did not know how much organization comes with having a “destination” wedding!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. From the day I got engaged, I knew that I wanted Publix to make my wedding cake. I don’t think there is anyone in this world who doesn’t love a Publix cake! So that was the easiest wedding decision I had! It was a five-tier cake with different flavors. One piece of advice I will tell brides is that there is often extra cake leftover that will go to waste. I decided to purchase little white boxes at Joann Fabric (mine were were the white swiss dot cake boxes from David Tutera’s new line that the store carries) and I asked catering to put the extra slices of cake in the boxes. I printed off a little sticker that said “Sweet Dreams, Love, Dani & Chris” and had those put on top. As the guests walked out of the venue, the little boxes of cake were displayed for them to take. Our guests loved the late night snack, it didn’t cost me anything extra, and the cake didn’t go to waste!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Chris and I knew of each other for a few years before we dated. Our parents went to the same church and we would see each other from time to time when we would attend on Sundays. This happened for a few years in high school and then college, but we were never formally introduced. We had a mutual friend and randomly saw each other out one night out through her. We recognized each other right away and started dating shortly afterwards. We have been together ever since!
Tell us all about the proposal! Chris proposed at a park in Winter Park, Florida. He said that he had to do something very down to earth or I would know it was coming! He definitely surprised me! He took me for brunch at one of our favorite restaurants and then asked me to walk back to the car through this little park. As we were walking along he dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him. It was simple, sweet, and perfect!
When did y’all get married? April 6, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 160
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We had a string quartet for the ceremony to set the mood of a traditional wedding ceremony, even though it was taking place on the beach. I walked down the aisle with my father to Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years”. After our first kiss as husband and wife, we walked back up the aisle to Hall and Oates’ “Making My Dreams Come True.” After the ceremony, there was a steel drum band for cocktail hour to give the fun island vibe, and we were ready to party at that point! For the reception, we had the most amazing fusion band and MC. “Rock with U” kept our guests on the dance floor all night. We couldn’t decide between doing a band or a DJ and “Rock with U” gave us the best of both worlds. Essentially, the band plays along to the songs that we all know and love, so it’s really cool to hear drums live while your favorite song is on!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We had our wedding in Islamorada, FL with all of our closest friends and family. We were there with both sides of our immediate and extended family for the week before the wedding. As the days to the wedding came closer, more friends and family made their way down. It was like a mini vacation with so many people we love. We are blown away by the amount of people who made the trip to Islamorada to be with us on such a special day. The number of friends and family who came doubled what we had expected to be able to attend our destination wedding. The outpouring of love and knowing people traveled great distances to be with us was my absolute favorite memory.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Kim McFadden of Chalkshop Events was a absolute dream to work with. We met when her business was just taking off and we understood each other’s visions so well! I would say it was love at the first conversation about weddings! She is an amazingly talented chalkboard artist, and every wedding that she does is completely original and unique! She drew inspiration off of my Pinterest board and we had a few design meetings, and I was blown away on the day of the wedding. All of the signs at my wedding are done by her! Our guestbook was a “polaroid guest boo,” and the backdrop was designed by Chalkshop. The guests stood in front of the board with some props, took a picture and then put it in the guestbook with a sweet note. I cherish those fun memories and it was something different, unique and fun for the guests during cocktail hour.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Imagine your event through the “eyes of the guests.” Write it down and go through the event from the beginning of the night to the end as a guest. Will they know where to go? If it might be confusing, you could use a welcome sign or sign for parking to help lead them. What happens to them between the ceremony and the cocktail hour? Will they know how to get to where they need to be? Are there going to be things for them to do at the event? Corn-hole is a very economical DIY, and it keeps the guests doing something fun and engaging during cocktail hour. We also had a Flipbook, which is a new and different type of photo booth. Our guests loved it because it wasn’t typical and they had never seen it before! Weddings are becoming so much more unique these days and there are no rules, so don’t be afraid to do something different. It’s a celebration of your love for each other! Keep things fun, fresh and a reflection of your personality as a couple. You can’t go wrong with that!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We look forward to starting a whole new life together! We would love to travel more, settle into a beautiful home and hopefully one day have kids.
