As much as I adore a traditional white gown, I absolutely love when brides go their own route. Claire knew she wanted something nontraditional, and worked with the ladies at White Orchid Bridal to create a custom gown. The result was a silvery dress with the most beautiful lacy detailing at the bottom. I’m impressed with Claire, who trusted each of her vendors and left them to work their creative magic. It shows, especially in these photos from Julie Roberts. She was spot-on in capturing the sweet and personal ceremony, where friends encircled the couple as they exchanged vows under an oak tree bearing their initials in moss (could the Knoxville Botanical Garden have provided a more perfect setting?!). I’m still in love with the photo of Claire + Brian right after the first look, it’s just so sweet. Come back for part II; this intimate garden wedding will not disappoint you.

Three adjectives that describe the day are: Magical, rustic, comfortable
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We’re definitely in love with food and wine, so those played a huge part in the wedding. We chose to do a really beautiful table of cheeses and charcuterie for appetizers during the cocktail hour following the ceremony. There were two tables filled with an assortment of wines that flowed all night. We didn’t pick just one or two bottles because we wanted it to feel like a dinner party at our home, so there were many different bottles open at any given moment at the wedding. The dinner was really beautiful, but I loved the cocktail hour where everyone was drinking wine and enjoying all these amazing cheeses. It was just so perfect.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The ceremony was under a big oak tree in the garden surrounded by beautiful stone walls. I love that all of our guests stood gathered around us, sipping on sparkling rose, while we said our vows. It felt less formal, and more like every guest there was really a part of our ceremony, which they were.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I wanted the dress to be special, but not necessarily traditionally bridal. Colleen from White Orchid Bridal completely understood my concept for the wedding and created this amazingly detailed dress that was a soft silvery grey color, layering multiple fabrics together to create something unique and vintage looking.
Describe your wedding flowers: I gave Brian at Cachepot free reign to create whatever he felt would be perfect for that day. He did an amazing job! It was really important for me to find people whose work I love and who I really trusted, and allow them to do their jobs. That was what allowed for so much of the uniqueness. I gave them my vision for the feel of the wedding, and basically allowed them to create from there.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The ceremony. I walked down the aisle, which was just the center of the garden, to the most beautiful strings playing “Falling Slowly.” We stood under a huge old oak tree that Brian, the florist had mounted our initials on in moss. It looked like it was just growing on the tree. The ceremony was so personal, and there was so much laughter throughout. We had both gone through so much to get to that point in our lives, and the ceremony truly reflected that and celebrated it. Everyone had told me the ceremony would be a big blur, and would be over before I knew it, so I was determined to be very present and remember it all, and I truly was. It remains my favorite memory of the wedding.

I’ve read a lot of wedding interviews in my time at SW, but can say, without a doubt, that none have been sweeter than Taylor’s account of how he met and eventually won over his lovely bride. (If you don’t usually, you’ll definitely want to read this couple’s sweet story!) After a whirlwind two month engagement, Laurie Anne + Taylor exchanged vows at the Aldridge Gardens, with Stephen Devries on hand to document their intimate service. The bride, in a Bella Couture gown, pulled out all the stops when it came to planning to outfitting her wedding party: pearl gray mix-and-match frocks from J. Crew with coordinating wraps (my favorite), cowboy boots and crisp gray suits for the gents. Laurie Anne’s veil was a Charlsie and Linda Designs creation, and Carol Riley of Lillie’s styled arrangements of lush blue hydrangeas. We’ll see you back here for Part II!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. (From the groom) We met in ethics class our junior year of college at Auburn University. I was already in class our first day when I saw Laurie Anne walk in. We quickly became close friends that semester. We both liked each other, but I was moving back to Birmingham and she was staying in Auburn. We lost touch and I spent the next three years trying to get over her. By this time I was living in NYC and thought she was out of my life for good. I had deleted her number from my phone and cut off all connection with her in an attempt to really move on. Next thing I know, I have a Facebook message from Laurie Anne telling me she is coming to NYC for a work trip and that she wants to hang out. So here is where I really tried to move on from her. I messaged her back, finally telling her how I really felt and have felt about her since the day we met, fully expecting her to respond like, “Sorry, I had no idea.” But instead her message back to me was a confession about how she has not been able to get me out of her heart, either. We talked on the phone for hours and within two days, she had a plane ticket to come visit me. That was easily the best give days of my life. Somehow the city was practically empty everywhere we went. Several times throughout the weekend we had stumbled our words and almost told each other “I love you,” but had managed to catch ourselves. But after a ferry ride to Staten Island, while sitting at the harbor looking towards Manhattan, I finally told Laurie Anne that I loved her. From there we had the greatest long distance relationship possible. Jesus blessed us with a very generous amount of sky miles, free plane tickets and time off work to where the longest we went without seeing each other was only three weeks…which was torture! A month and a half later, I had quite my job and was returning to Birmingham to get my bride.

Describe the proposal. Since Laurie Anne and I worked together, it made surprising her with a proposal a little tricky. I would pick her up on the way to work and after work would hang out with her until we got tired and then I would head home. So there was really no time to surprise her. I figured my only chance to catch her off guard was the only time we were apart: while she was asleep. The night before, I had been praying about how to go about this proposal and the Lord told me to open my Bible. I randomly opened to a very familiar chapter I had been dwelling on for the past year and began to read. I woke up before the sun, and planned to get to her house at sunrise. I snuck into her room at sunrise, knelt down at the side of her bed and woke her up. I read my promise to her and asked her to marry me. She said, “Yes!!!!”

After the “I do’s,” Tiffany + Ryan moved the party to the Cross Creek Ranch barn for a down-home celebration. I’m still a sucker for those twinkle lights strung over the dance floor and mason jars turned candles lining the banisters! Delectables Fine Catering provided an authentic Southern spread, replete with an authentic red velvet + cheesecake from Alessi Bakery. Take a peek at talented photographer Kallie Brynn’s beautiful post from the big day here!

Describe your wedding flowers: My cousin Susan did all of our flowers as a wedding gift. I only had a few simple requests. I wanted each bridesmaid to have a different bouquet, since I was really adamant about them not looking like uniform ladies in waiting. I love my friends and I wanted all of them to look and feel as awesome as I did on my wedding day. I also asked that a few gardenias be put in my bouquet in honor of her Mother in Law who had recently passed away and with whom I was very close. My cousin did an amazing job with the flowers!
Describe your wedding cake: I hate cake, but I have one exception to that rule: red velvet. For some reason, I had forgotten about red velvet cake’s existence and we had decided to go slightly out of the box and do something with cheesecake, which I do love. At our cake meeting I explained my aversion to cake and our baker brought up something called a “Cheesecake tort.” Basically each layer of cake had layers within it: Red velvet, cream cheese, cheesecake, cream cheese and then another delicious layer of red velvet on top. It was heaven. My husband gets full credit for the cake design. To go with our fall-themed wedding, he decided on a cake that had a branch going across it with falling sugar leaves. We couldn’t have been more excited to discover the day of that the branch was a chocolate covered pretzel. Yum.
What was the most memorable moment about your wedding day? My favorite moment was during the ceremony when it came time for the rings I turned to my best friend and maid of honor, Emily, for the ring. We locked eyes, smiled at each other and then promptly dropped it on the ground. This could have been a moment of class for me, but instead I (unfortunately, very loudly) said “Oh Crap”, except I didn’t say crap… I said the slightly bluer, R-rated version of crap in front of the pastor, my guests, and my in-laws, and then instead of letting Emily gracefully bend down to get the ring I bent at the waist, practically mooned my audience and got the ring myself.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We said traditional vows, but when it came time for me to say, “I do,” for some reason I shouted out, “SURE,” instead.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? This March we are taking a twenty-day European vacation, in May Ryan graduates Pharmacy school, and then we are moving back to Tampa to be closer to our families.
