Yes, I am a full grown adult, and yes I still truly believe in fairytales! (That’s why I about died when a childhood friend of mine married the Little Mermaid — or, at least the girl who plays her at Disney World! True story, y’all!) So, when I started reading Caroline + Ben’s interview, you shouldn’t be surprised to hear that I was absolutely taken by their modern day Cinderella story. That might be a bit of a stretch, but our bride did lose a shoe and her groom did (kind of) find it! Either way, I love that Caroline described Ben as her “knight in shining armor.” Swoon!

I also love the gorgeous classic details and family traditions C + B weaved throughout their wedding, especially the gardenias inspired by the ones surrounding her childhood home. What a lovely sentiment (and scent!).

Y’all are going to love the second line photos captured by Meg Baisden — they make me want to join in!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. This was a very difficult process. I tried on over 70 dresses and was even invited to Randy Fenoli’s new show, “Randy to the Rescue” in New Orleans. I thought I had found the right dress and even said yes to a dress on the show. However, after one last dress shopping excursion in Boston, I finally found the dress. I couldn’t stop thinking about it, and on the way home from trying it on, I got the omen of a lifetime. My sister and I were driving down Beacon Street when I happened to notice that there was an Omni Hotel, which was where we were having our wedding reception. As we were driving by I caught a glimpse of one their window displays. I did a double take and quickly told my sister to pull the car over! I got out of the car and ran to the window, and sure enough, my dress was on display in the Omni window! We couldn’t believe it.

I’d have to say that Caroline made the right decision with this gorgeous dress. Those ruffles all the way down her gown are absolutely amazing!

Yes, we did a first look and I absolutely loved it. It might have been my favorite part of the whole day. I loved that it was just he and I—no one else. We were able to talk and reflect privately about how it was finally here and actually happening. The whole weekend was so surreal and it was nice to have some alone time with my best friend. It was very comforting, and I was very grateful for it.

I love the subtle, but super sweet way Caroline is holding her dad’s hand instead of linking arms.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The second line! The second line walk from the wedding ceremony to the reception was extraordinary. Everything was perfect—the weather, the streets, the crowd, and of course, the music! It was truly an amazing experience and a very special memory that I will never forget!
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Oyster shells nameplates, Pimm’s Cup signature drinks for the second line walk (after the ceremony), cake pulls, and our welcome gift bags full of local goodies such as Zapps chips, saltwater taffy from Roman Candy guy, pralines, and a variety of other New Orleans items.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We picked out a beautiful all-white wedding cake decorated with our new initials, CJB, and fresh gardenias that were placed around and on top of the cake. I also had 8 “cake pulls” for by bridesmaids, which was a fun surprise for them. I personally picked out the charms for each of my bridesmaids, which offered a nice personal touch. They loved them!

Such a fun groom’s cake!

Ben and I danced to Van Morrison’s “Crazy Love.” We are both big fans of Van Morrison and felt that this song was a great classic that fit our relationship and the occasion perfectly. I danced with my father to Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World.” This has always been one of my parents’ favorite songs, as well as mine. The fact that it was by Louis Armstrong was like the cherry on top; it fit into the New Orleans theme perfectly!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met in college (we both went to UGA) at a party that Ben and his roommates threw. Ben really caught my attention after handling a rather annoying situation by someone who had had far too much to drink. This girl, whom I had never met, thought it would be funny to throw my shoe out the window (I had taken them off while playing pool with Ben). She threw it down onto the busy and very popular Clayton Street. This would not have been that big of a deal had my shoe been found, but it wasn’t! Ben ended up having to lend me a pair of his flip-flops for the rest of the night while we hit the bars and it ended up being quite comical.. It turned out to be one of the best nights of my life, other than losing my favorite pair of shoes. The next day, Ben called to let me know that he had gotten a check from the girl to cover the cost of my shoes! I had not asked for or expected this gesture, so you can only imagine my excitement upon finding out that Ben had acted as my knight in shinning armor and I was going to get a brand new pair of shoes! This was in the fall of 2003 (yes—a very long time ago!). Ben and I hit it off pretty quickly after that, and after eight years of dating, Ben popped the question in New Orleans, Louisiana!
Tell us all about the proposal! Ben surprised me at one of my favorite New Orleans locations, The Columns Hotel. After he popped the question in a private room filled with candles and and rose petals, the surprise continued as we walked downstairs for dinner to find some of our closest friends and family shouting congrats and popping champagne! Ben even made sure my mother, who was living in Italy at the time, was there. I couldn’t believe it!
When did y’all get married? 12/22/12
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 160
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Proverbs 3:1-6: “My child, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments; for length of days and years of life, and abundant welfare they will give you. Do not let loyalty and faithfulness forsake you; bind them round your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and of people. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:13-18: “Happy are those who find wisdom, and those who get understanding, for her income is better than silver, and her revenue better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called happy.” These Old Testament scriptures make good wedding readings because a wedding is a transition between stages of life. It’s a time when our parents give us advice about what lies before us. Though a couple getting married aren’t children, it’s a good time to be reminded of the need to trust in the Lord
Describe your wedding flowers. Gardenias. I have loved the smell of gardenias for as long as I can remember. My mom had gardenias planted all around my childhood home and the smell has always triggered a sense of security and well-being for me. When Ben and I moved into our first home together (2009), the first things I planted were gardenia bushes. With all this being said, it is no surprise that my choice of flower was the gardenia. The groom and the groomsmen all wore gardenia boutonnieres, and everything else was accented with gardenias in some way or another. I even wore two fresh gardenias in my hair. They smelled amazing!
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? My wedding planner, Michelle Adams, was phenomenal all around. We could not have done it without her.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Our first look and the second line were my two most memorable moments. Hands down.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Take it one day at a time and when things get really tough, just remember what it’s really all about: marrying your best friend and getting to spend the rest of your life with them. No one is going to care which way the napkins are folded or the fonts picked for the menu, so just step back and try to look at the bigger picture. Be grateful for the wonderful new chapter in your life that you are about to begin.

Traditionally, I love to talk about the sweet details I find within the interview portion. Like how Sara had her late father’s signet ring as her something old, or how she wrapped a piece of one of his old madras shirts around her bouquet. I’m a sucker for sentimental details, and believe me there is no shortage in Sara + TJ’s interview. But today, I absolutely can’t stop staring at the colorful fun in each and every photo from Katelyn James! Once you scroll down a bit, I’m sure you’ll understand how I feel. Stripes, monograms, navy + pink! Even striped bouquet bows! Y’all, Sara + TJ’s wedding has me wanting to don my best collared shirt, pearls and some khaki shorts just to look at this pretty day!

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! Something borrowed: my grandmother’s lace handkerchief, something blue: navy striped shoes, something old: my dad’s signet ring, something new: my earrings.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I went to Bella Rosa, a store in Richmond, with my mom, TJ’s mom, my maid of honor and three bridesmaids that were local. I had a pretty good idea of what I was looking for—something simple and classic. My dress was the first one I tried on and the rest is history!

With the help of my mother-in-law, we did all of the flowers for the wedding. She did all of the table arrangements and I tied my bouquet and the bouquets for my bridesmaids. My bouquet had the most beautiful coral and white peonies and it was wrapped with a piece of one of my dad’s old madras shirts, so it was especially meaningful. The bridesmaid bouquets had sunset roses, a variety of pink garden roses, coral and white peonies, and white hydrangeas and were wrapped in navy and white striped ribbon. Navy and white stripes is my most favorite color…it should be a color.

I cannot agree more, navy + white stripes should definitely be a color!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did a first look because we wanted to be able to get lots of pictures together, while not missing out on celebrating with our guests. Also, seeing each other before the ceremony calmed both of our nerves!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: I loved the flowers and all of my navy patterns! TJ absolutely loved his shoes!
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our location at Main Street Station in Richmond was pretty Southern, in addition to the classic, preppy feel of our wedding. Lots of stripes, patterns, and color. I think the relaxed, welcoming and fun atmosphere is a hallmark of a good Southern wedding.

A mama’s girl myself, I love how Sara had her mother walk her down in the aisle in the absence of her late father. They’re smiles are so radiant!

We had one reading from Nicholas Sparks’ book The Wedding: “But love, I’ve come to understand, is more than three words mumbled before bedtime. Love is sustained by action, a pattern of devotion in the things we do for each other every day.”

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. TJ and I met the summer after our freshman year of college. Our parents live about five minutes away from each other and we both happened to get jobs at the new restaurant down the street, Max & Erma’s. We went to neighboring high schools (our county is big) and we had similar friends, but we never knew each other. We worked together for a few months before we started dating. In August, we both went back to college—he in North Carolina at High Point University and I in Harrisonburg, Virginia at James Madison University. We had a long-distance relationship until I graduated and moved back to Richmond to attend grad school at Virginia Commonwealth University. TJ had transferred there a couple of years before. We dated for seven years before we got engaged!
Tell us all about the proposal! For my birthday, TJ planned a picnic at a winery about an hour from Richmond (King Family Vineyards), which is one of my favorite places on Earth. That Saturday morning, it was pouring and I kept saying we could reschedule for better weather, but TJ insisted and so we headed to King Family. After a tasting, TJ went and got the picnic basket that he had packed. We started to lay all of the food out on a picnic table since it was too wet to sit on the grass. A group of older adults walked into the tasting room and TJ asked if one of the gentlemen would take our picture. As he started shooting, TJ got down on one knee—and it was captured on camera! Since it was my birthday, we were going to meet up with one of my girlfriends that night in Richmond, as I thought no one else was going to be able to celebrate my birthday with me. Little did I know, TJ had planned a surprise birthday party and all of my best girlfriends were there to celebrate. It was one of the best weekends of my life!
When did y’all get married? June 8, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? Around 150
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We didn’t write our own vows, however the ceremony was deeply personal, as it was officiated by TJ’s childhood pastor, who also happens to be the father of one of his best friends.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. I walked down the aisle to The Piano Guys’ version of A Thousand Years. We recessed to “Everlasting Love” by Natalie Cole—something fun and upbeat to get the party started. Our first dance was to “Whatever It Is” by Zac Brown Band, one of our most favorite bands. For our “Mom’s Dance” (my dad passed away when I was 10), we danced to “In My Life” by The Beatles, as it was one of my dad’s favorite songs and a way to remember him. We also made sure that “Wagon Wheel” by Old Crow Medicine Show was played, as it is one of TJ’s favorite songs and our group of friends goes nuts over it.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We had cupcakes from Pearl’s Cupcake Shoppe, a local favorite. There were five flavors and all were delicious!!! Red velvet, scrum-delicious (chocolate cake filled with peanut butter whip frosted with butterfinger buttercream and toffee shavings), vanilla cake with vanilla frosting, vanilla cake with chocolate frosting, and strawberry cake with fresh strawberry frosting.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? I think the guest list was one of the biggest challenges. We would have loved to invite a lot more people than we did, but the space had a limit on the number of people allowed due to fire code.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Without a doubt, I couldn’t imagine our wedding with having Katelyn and Michael there. They were absolutely fantastic. Their easygoing spirit was a blessing and the images that we will have forever are spectacular. I also LOVED the navy and white striped runners. My mom made all nine of them and they were exactly how I envisioned them to be.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Being able to celebrate with all of our closest family and friends is something that we will never forget.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Take lots of deep breaths and simplify. I had a massive pinterest board, or ten, for our wedding. One day, I got so overwhelmed with all of my ideas that I just had to delete a bunch of pins and focus on what was important. It’s easy to get wrapped up in little details, but that isn’t what matters.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We plan on living in Richmond and tackling some DIY projects on our house, hanging out with our pups Millie and Rex, and enjoying married life.

I first discovered fine art wedding photography almost four years ago, when a friend of mine left a Facebook comment on someone’s wedding pictures. Being the wedding picture-stalker I tend to be, I checked out the wedding album and was floored by how gorgeous and cinematic the photography was. Their photographer? None other than Tim Willoughby of Tim Will, who photographed today’s real wedding! Since Tim could be credited with the start of my love for amazing wedding photography, I’m especially honored to be sharing Rachel and Daniel’s beautiful Chattanooga wedding today. Their wedding is overflowing with Southern elegance, and you won’t want to miss their adorable proposal story—I definitely got tears in my eyes when I read it!

Tell us all about the proposal! Daniel and I have an affinity for bluegrass music. I just listen to it, but he plays the mandolin and guitar, and suffers from a banjo addiction. The song that we have always considered “ours” is “Ocean of Diamonds” by Jimmy Martin. One Sunday night last June, I returned to Charleston from out of town. Daniel had cooked dinner since I had been traveling all day. He told me he heard a great new band that I just had to hear. I was exhausted and stuffing my face when he started playing it. It took about five seconds for me to realize that it was him singing and playing guitar, mandolin and banjo. He had recorded it for me on Garage Band. Still not convinced he was proposing, we started dancing in the kitchen, and with our chests together I could feel his heart racing… that’s when I knew what was up! He got down on one knee and I was crying so hard, I can barely remember what he said. I said yes, and he gave me his grandmother’s diamond filigree ring.

The flowers were romantic and ethereal. The pale soft roses and peonies contrasted so well with the sharp blue thistle and dark blue anemone centers. My florist also wrapped some gold wire around my bouquet and the boys’ boutonnieres. It added a fairytale whimsy to the pastels!

Cami, my bridesmaid and best friend, sang “Be Thou My Vision,” a Gaelic hymn, right before I walked down the aisle. It is so hauntingly beautiful and her voice is so angelic, I don’t think there was a dry eye in the building. It meant so much to have her sing at my wedding. She has been in my life since the beginning!

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We had a few. My favorite was Song of Solomon 8:6-7. It speaks of an unquenchable love. That’s exactly how I feel about my groom.

Tim Willoughby is a photographer I found in Charleston. His ability to capture timeless, breathtaking images sold me immediately. Having him in Chattanooga for the weekend made me so calm. I didn’t have to worry if he was getting all of the right images because I knew he was. He was able to see all of the things I couldn’t. Over time, memories fade, and it gave me peace of mind knowing I would have his photos to look at forever.

Seriously, y’all, I could look at pictures of Rachel’s dreamy Vera Wang gown all day. If it looks familiar to you, it might be because our very own Emily tried it on during one of her dress shopping trips almost two years ago, at the same salon where Rachel bought her dress!

One of the most Southern things about our wedding was my dad’s bluegrass band playing for our cocktail hour. They also played our first dance, which happened to be “Ocean of Diamonds,” the song Daniel proposed to me with! I think the juxtaposition of the bluegrass band in a modern art museum was such a funky twist on what “Southern” can be. Who says Southern has to be at a plantation or in a barn?

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. My cake had a subtle floral pattern inset into the buttercream icing. The roses and blue thistle floral accents really stood out against the simple design. Daniel’s cake was a real work of art. I mentioned his banjo addiction right? Well his cake was a chocolate, to scale model of a Gibson banjo. It was insanely realistic…and delicious.

You know how much we love a gentleman in seersucker! This adorable duo is actually Daniel’s grandmother and her twin brother. Aren’t they the cutest?

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Gosh, how can I pick one moment? I guess the most memorable would be the dance floor, because I spent the majority of the night there. The dance floor was packed from start to finish. Everyone was dancing like maniacs! I am a super awkward dancer, but being with old and new friends, my family and Daniel’s family all together was kind of mind blowing. I kept looking over and seeing two people from two completely separate parts of my life breaking it down together like fools. It was a once in a lifetime thing.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Daniel and I met at a football game during our junior year of high school in 2005. We dated all through the rest of high school. When college came, I was going to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and he was headed to join the crew team at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. We thought it was over from the horror stories people told us about long-distance relationships. Over those four LONG years of dating 650 miles away, we realized that no matter how hard a long-distance relationship was, it wouldn’t even be close to the pain that would come from not being in each others’ lives. Luckily we survived, and I was able to move to Charleston, SC after graduation to be with him when he started medical school.
When did y’all get married? May 25, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 325, give or take.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. My mom, two sisters and future mother-in-law came to Charleston one August weekend for a day of dress shopping. We started in the morning at Maddison Row in downtown Charleston. My dress was the third one I tried on, and I just knew. I tried on a few others, but kept going back to the Vera Wang Emmeline. I told them when I first walked in that I loved tulle, and this dress has TONS of tulle. I ended up buying it that morning and canceling my other dress appointments that day. My mom was disappointed that the shopping ended so quickly!
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did not do a first look. Since I was a little girl, I have been looking forward to having my church doors swing open and my groom seeing me with the rest of my guests.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? No way! I can’t write to save my life. Daniel and I wrote each other letters before the wedding. My words are best kept on a private piece of paper.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! Something borrowed was a hair barrette my mother had gotten as a gift from her parents when they vacationed in Mexico. My something blue was a blue stone bracelet of my mother’s. New was a delicate lace handkerchief wrapped around my bouquet that a family friend wove on her loom! For my something old, I had my late grandmother’s costume turtle brooch peeking out of my bouquet.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The biggest challenge for me was narrowing down my ideas. Between reading wedding magazines and being on Pinterest all day, it is so hard to decide which direction you want to go! There are so many amazing ideas out there. Eventually I had to just close my eyes and imagine my ideal wedding. Things started to fall into place.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Enjoy it. Your engagement is a time to savor. It only lasts a short while! Don’t stress the little things. It’s easy to get wrapped up in planning a “dream wedding” and to forget that you are marrying the man of your dreams.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Daniel and I are settling into our new house in Charleston. He is continuing medical school, and I have an awesome interior design job. We just got a sweet new doggy, and we’re enjoying everyday life as a happy little family.

As a wedding guest and mother of one of the bridesmaids, I can say that this was the most beautiful and meaningful weddings I have ever attended. I have known Rachel since she was a child and Daniel since they began dating. This wedding was a celebration of two beautiful people that love each other and two special families that bring together many people who love them and who were honored to celebrate, with abandon, this special day with them. It was not only a celebration of the couple, but of their amazing love of family and our love for them and their families! We love you, Rachel & Daniel!
