Welcome back to our finalist series for our third Ultimate Southern Challenge! As you may recall, this time we’re all about burlap. Our next finalists, Tying the Knot and Greer G. Photography, combined to produce a full shoot based on oysters and burlap (since oysters traditionally are packaged in burlap sacks), and we love their ideas for lending a little bit of glamour to this humble material! They put together several different projects, so let’s take a look:

First, the team put together a beautiful boxed invitation with a burlap and lace wrap.

An old window and burlap-backed seating charts made for a fun twist on the traditional escort card.

This rustic glam burlap garland would be perfect at the entrance to your venue or strung from chair to chair at a wedding ceremony. And it’s so easy to make!

For a beyond-easy DIY, dress up store-bought pillar candles with burlap and twine bands.

Finally, we had to share this adorable burlap banner:

If you’d like to see more from this shoot, you can check it out right here!

Our next finalist in the Ultimate Southern Challenge is Sarah from Events Uncorked. She worked with her Mom (love that!) to create the perfect burlap bow tie!

From Sarah:

“I wanted to create something out of burlap with the ultimate Southern flair. And, what’s more Southern than a man in a bow tie? I created these bow ties with the help of my mom using burlap with a linen backing. They are rustic and charming, but most importantly, they’re Southern!”

Materials: 1 yd. burlap, 1 yd. natural linen, 1 yd. fusible interfacing, Stitchwitchery, natural-colored thread, a sewing machine, an iron, pins, a pencil, tape, scissors, a ruler, and a bow tie template (courtesy of Martha Stewart)

Directions:
1. Print bow tie template. Blow up 200%. Cut out and tape together.
2. Begin by ironing the fusible interfacing to the back of your burlap. Iron linen lightly to remove any wrinkles.
3. Place linen on top of burlap and pin at the top. Be sure that once the two are pinned together, the interfacing is on the outside, so once sewn together and flipped, it will be on the inside.
4. Trace bow tie template on to linen with your pencil. Pin on the inside of the bow tie as to keep together while cutting and sewing.
5. Repeat step 4 until you run out of fabric. It should make approximately 8 bow ties.
6. Cut out the bow tie and measure a 1/4 inch in on both sides for your stitch line.
7. Sew the bow tie around both ends and along one straight side. Be sure to leave one side completely open!
8. Flip the bow tie inside out so the stitch line is now on the inside.
9. Iron down 1/4 inch fold on the open side to create a creased edge. Place Stitchwitchery along open edge and iron together.
10. Iron entire bow tie to ensure flat edges and unwrinkled linen.

Thank you so much, ladies! Readers, if you love this idea, be sure to let us know in the comments! And remember, you’re welcome to give a vote of support to more than one concept.

Welcome back to the world of weddings, y’all! We have some fun posts ready to go this week. In addition to the usual real weddings, we’re excited to be presenting the finalists in our most recent Ultimate Southern Challenge over the next few days! The focus this time around was on burlap. Our finalists really went above and beyond, with several putting together full shoots involving our favorite rough and tumble material! Let’s get started!

The talented team at Cedarwood Weddings is known for their creativity, so we were not surprised to find a detail-filled submission from them! Kristyn Hogan photographed everything to perfection. Here’s a look at the unique ideas they put together:

To start, Linda and her team worked with Designs in Paper to develop a sophisticated stationery suite. We love the vertical burlap belly band – a twist on the usual horizontal version!

The Cedarwood team used large sheets of burlap (purchased from a local fabric store) to create burlap wall panels. The letters were cut from gray suede fabric and attached to the burlap with brads. The panels were installed with rods and brackets. These would be such a good idea for a Southern photobooth or ceremony backdrop, or to hide a less-than-desirable corner of your venue!

For the table tops, Cedarwood ordered French grain sacks in burlap from Online Fabric Store and stitched them together to create rustic runners. Side note: How cute are those mini cookies??

Finally, the team set up a gourmet popcorn bar in lieu of favors. They used burlap bags and suitcases from Save on Crafts as containers, and put together a handmade burlap bunting and quilted sign for the backdrop. Popcornopoly in Nashville supplied the treats!

WHEW, y’all! So many fabulous burlap ideas, and that’s just ONE entry! Thanks so much, Linda + Kristyn! Readers, if you love this idea, be sure to let us know in the comments! And remember, you’re welcome to give a vote of support to more than one concept.

Cedarwood Weddings is a fabulous member of our Blue Ribbon Vendor Directory!
