Southern Weddings Weekly Round-Up

by in Main on

The Southern Weddings office looked a little different this week–not only was it our first full week without Emily (she had her baby girl last week and is on maternity leave!), but we also welcomed two new members to our team! Some of you may already know Amber Housley–we teamed up with her on this and this editorial shoot, and she’s a speaker at the Making Things Happen Conference. We’re delighted that she’s now our new Marketing Director, and can’t wait to officially introduce her here on the blog next week! We also welcomed Jess Metcalf, our new Customer Delight and Shop Manager for both the Southern Weddings Shop and Lara Casey Shop. Jess will be starting with us full-time in a few weeks, and we’ll be sure to give y’all a proper introduction then. In the meantime, get to know both of these ladies on Instagram (Amber and Jess)–we know you’ll love them as much as we do!

See more from this engagement session by Joelle Grace and Victoria Austin Designs on our Facebook page!

In case you missed it this week…

Hannah and Evan: A little white chapel, unique signage, and honey favors in North Carolina.
Madeleine and Caleb: An illusion lace gown, greenery garlands, and a dessert table in Tennessee.
Libby and Matt: A classic rice toss, blush bouquets, and thank you note place cards in Kentucky.
Sarah and Chad: A rustic venue, buried bourbon, and dogs in bow ties in Virginia.

We shared our top gift ideas for newlyweds from V8’s Surcees feature.
Please help us congratulate some of our newest brides-to-be!
Alison and Luke gave us a tour of their cozy Charlotte home on Southern Newlywed.
Cara and Jerritt shared how they prepared for marriage in Sweet Tea Sunday.

Have a lovely weekend, and congratulations to anyone getting married!

Welcome to the new year, friends! The Southern Weddings gals are already feeling a bit dazzled by all the potential 2016 holds, but before we jump into the real weddings, advice, and inspiration that it promises, we wanted to take one more walk down memory lane. We love inviting you into our office, whether it’s through daily peeks on SnapChat or Instagram or the #MakingSouthernWeddings hashtag; what we do wouldn’t be nearly as much fun without y’all alongside, offering feedback and encouragement! So here’s a look back at a few of our favorite moment from 2015, including a few we weren’t able to share with you along the way!

We started 2015 with a visit from a contractor, as our growing team needed a bit more space to stretch its wings. Holes in walls followed shortly, which made kicking off our V8 shoot plans with editorial partners a bit more challenging – but we persevered! We also had a mini flower arranging lesson from our friend Kelly Perry, and began interviewing candidates for a Southern Weddings Marketing position. Little did we know, the latter is a pursuit that would continue until the very last month of the year!!

V8 editorial planning continued in February! Lisa jetted off to New York City for a few days to shoot a campaign with Zales – you can see the completed videos here, here, here, and here! We were all so proud of her! We also were so excited to launch a fresh new design in our sister storefront, the Lara Casey Shop. The office renovation continued :)

In March, it was my turn to leave the still-being-renovated office to fly to New York, this time to speak at our friend Holly Chapple’s workshop on creating editorials and magazine submissions. I missed out on a visit to our office from Lysa TerKeurst and the Proverbs 31 team, but got to hear the enthusiastic reviews from the other gals. Those talented ladies helped us implement some new ways of doing things, and we are still so grateful! Later in the month, Lisa and I flew to Texas for our first two V8 shoots (yeehaw!) — one in Houston and one in Austin — and two reader meet-ups, making it back just in time for the spring Making Things Happen conference. The SW gals always help host, and we hope to see some of you at the 2016 version – tickets are on sale for half price for a few more weeks!

Just a day after the MTH Conference concluded, we headed to the wilds of North Carolina for our third V8 shoot – Love Preserved! There was lots of pig snuggle time to be had (behind the scenes photos and video here!). We also moved into our new office space (take a tour here – yippee!!), did more interviews for our marketing position, and set aside some time for our annual team retreat and team photos with Katelyn James. Our retreat even included a surprise bridal shower for Lisa, who was getting married in just a few days!!

After two years with our team, we said goodbye to our Assistant Art Director Morgan in May, but not before celebrating Lisa and Dave’s wedding!!! It was an amazing celebration that really brought to life everything we believe about weddings and marriage. I headed to Charlottesville solo for our Equestrian Elegance editorial while Lisa was on her honeymoon, and then the two of us reunited for our Fore the Love editorial and reader meet-up in Charleston later in the month! Nicole attended Alt Summit for the first time and also began looking into moving our shop fulfillment out of our small office. Oh yes, we also interviewed some more people :)

In June we wrapped up our final two big photo shoots for V8: the Southern belle shoot and Our Kentucky Home! (Marking the first trip to Kentucky for Lisa and me!) Nicole began laying out our new issue’s pages, and met with another potential fulfillment house for the Southern Weddings Shop.

Even in the hustle of getting V8 ready for print, there was lots of community happening in July! The NC Southern Weddings gals continued our yearly tradition of blueberry picking while the Florida division hosted the first ever reader meet-up in that state as part of our “Summer Love” theme. We also gathered with our beaus for our annual team summer BBQ! Finally, we had an extensive meeting with a production company for a possible Southern Weddings TV show (!), but ultimately decided it was not the right opportunity for us.

The most exciting thing that happened in August was that Lara had a baby!! Our gang of girls was more than happy to welcome Joshua to the office. We shot a few last photos for V8 on the back porch of our office, Lisa spearheaded the V8 cake shoot, and she and I worked hard on a proposal for a super-secret project! And, after another round of lovely but not-quite-right marketing interviews, we opened up another application with slightly different criteria. Whew!

In September, we hit a fun milestone: 100,000 Instagram followers! Crazy to think we’re already up to 158,000 as I type this, all thanks to you lovely readers and the way you generously share us with your friends. Thank you, thank you!! Also in September we styled and shot the surcees feature for V8 all by ourselves, which was a big milestone for us! We also said goodbye to Elizabeth, our summer intern, and hello to Jill, our fall intern!

October was a total whirlwind, and kicked our tail in a lot of ways! There was tons of action on the V8 front, from final layout adjustments to copyediting to color proofing at our printer in Wisconsin. Lisa and Kristin traveled to Bridal Market for three days (posts here and here), and Lisa and I traveled to Charleston to speak at Bliss & Bespoke for three days. We also moved our shop product out of our office into our fulfillment house, we got to see the first copies of the magazine, and we did a ton more interviews for our marketing position!

We didn’t really slow down in November, however: the first two weeks included the fall Making Things Happen Conference, V8’s newsstand launch day, a mini baby shower for me (so nice!!), and the V8 launch party (our biggest ever, at our beloved Carolina Inn!). We rounded the month out by sharing all of our V8 editorials with you, and more marketing interviews!

Finally, in December, we were able to pause and reflect on our year, together. We had a mini team retreat at the beginning of the month to work through our PowerSheets as a company and begin to set goals for 2016. Lara spoke at the Rising Tide Society Summit, which was awesome! We had our annual team celebration dinner, and celebrated with readers at the fifth annual Gingerbread Barns event. And finally, finally, in the final week of 2015, we offered positions to two new ladies (one more for the Southern Weddings side, and one more for the Lara Casey/Making Things Happen side)… and they accepted. We can’t wait to introduce you to them in the new year!

Dear readers, thank you doesn’t really begin to cover all that we feel. We couldn’t do any of this without you, and we are so grateful for the ways you encourage us in and inspire our mission. Here’s to a really beautiful, meaningful 2016 for all of us!!

We’re finishing out our year of Southern Newlywed home tours with one of our most colorful couples yet! Lilly aficionados will find much to love in Erin and Ryan’s sweet home, but I love that Erin purposefully countered the pink and pattern with more neutral (and even downright manly) spaces. They also have a lot to teach us about cultivating the feeling of home wherever you are — can you believe they’ve only been in this space for a few months? Friends, please welcome these two (and the rest of their adorable family!) to the blog!

Big hugs to Liz Fogarty for these wonderful photos!

The family: Erin and Ryan Phillips, both 27; daughter Sullivan, 7 months; and golden retriever mixes Cotton and Mallie
Years married: 4.5
Where they live: Arlington, Virginia

Tell us a little bit about yourselves. We’re Ryan and Erin Phillips, a fun-loving couple who recently welcomed our first little one, Sullivan Louise Phillips, to our family in April. We’re originally from South Carolina, but moved to Virginia in 2013!
Tell us your love story in one sentence. We met on a rainy day at the Carolina Cup, got engaged less than a year later on the Clemson football field, married the year after in Greenville, SC, and now have discovered an even deeper definition of love in our daughter, who was born in Richmond right before our four year anniversary.
What is your favorite part of being married? Feeling complete. We truly are each other’s better halves.

What has been the most surprising thing about marriage? We got engaged while still in college, which a lot of our friends found “so lame.” Ha! The most surprising thing to them and us is that, in fact, you actually get so much cooler after marriage. There’s a sense of comfort, confidence, and deep rooted love that comes along with marriage that is just like none other!

Tell us a little bit about where you live. We’ve owned homes in the prior two places we called home (Greenville, SC and Richmond, VA). We’ve found that a good recipe is to rent for a year while you scout out where you want to plant your roots. We just moved here this summer, so right now we’re renting a single-family home in a little neighborhood in Arlington, VA. We were so excited to find a home with space, a backyard, great parks and restaurants within walking distance, and less than ten minutes to DC!
Tell us about the process of moving in together. We had just graduated college and gotten married when we moved in together, so we really were starting from scratch. One thing we realized pretty quickly was that I should be in charge of interiors, and Ryan, exteriors. I do not have a green thumb and Ryan doesn’t understand why you would ever hang anything besides an American flag on the wall.

Where do you splurge and where do you save when decorating? Our white slipcovered couches were a splurge from Pottery Barn. I only own white slipcovered couches with dogs and kids because you can just grab the covers right off and bleach the heck out of them — even red wine has come out! While I believe in quality furniture pieces, I also think it’s important to have balance so you don’t go broke! :) For example, in the same room as our couches, there’s a $9 lighting fixture that I found at a secondhand store and restored. As far as sources, if you have a Home Emporium/Southeastern Salvage (called different things in different states) near you, this is your place! They have things like $89 cowhides, $250 wine cask chandeliers, and all the little knick knacks you need to spruce up a home. Craigslist is also my favorite. (The gold bamboo chairs in my living room were free off Craigslist, they just needed a little TLC!) I also love Furbish Studios, The Land of Nod, Etsy, Joss & Main, World Market, Home Goods, and, of course, Target.

What most makes your house feel like home? Cliche, I know, but our house feels most like a home when the ones I love are inside. Curtains, cozy blankets spread around, and lamp lighting helps, too!
What is your favorite memory from your wedding? Walking down the aisle! There was so much emotion and love at that moment, and not just from me. Our siblings were bawling as well as my maid of honor. Even Ryan had tears he had to wipe away.

Which items from your wedding registry do you use the most often? Our everyday place settings from Pottery Barn and our Le Creuset French oven!
What different decisions, if any, would you make for your registry if you knew then what you knew now? I would have added fewer “fun” options to ensure that we got the necessary items. We moved in together and had no silverware!
Who cooks dinner? Ryan is the chef in our house, but I’m the baker. This makes for some pretty epic meals!
What is your go-to weeknight meal? Weekend meal? We’re actually testing out Blue Apron right now, so this accounts for most of our weeknight meals. As for the weekend, we love to spend time making our own South Carolina shrimp ‘n grits recipe.

How does your family handle finances? We sit down a few times throughout the year to check in and make sure we’re on track with our savings, especially when Christmas is coming up and there are lots of gifts and travel to buy. Ryan works in finance, so he handles most of the accounts for our family.
What’s your best tip for balancing your relationship and other life priorities? This is so hard! Just acknowledging that it’s hard, first and foremost, has helped us a lot. We schedule date nights in advance to ensure we’re making time for each other and we try to keep the TV off most week nights, which we find opens the door for a lot more communication.

What is one small way you love or serve your spouse? We’re a big fan of surcees, or little surprise gifts. We do this by buying a favorite treat from the grocery store when we go, or if something little was left in the Amazon cart, we’ll purchase it as a surprise.

Before getting married, I wish someone had told me… that the wedding is just the beginning, not the whole story.

Is there anything else about your home or family life that you think our readers would be interested in? The move from Richmond to Northern Virginia was a hard one for us. We found out we had to move when I was about eight months pregnant and then made the actual move with a two month old. Our home and “family” in Richmond was so special to us and made it hard to leave. You never know how strong your marriage is until it’s put to the test, but man have we come out stronger! The biggest comfort we have found thus far is in making our little rental house feel like a home. Ryan and I often say to each other that, “home is wherever I am with you.”

Thank you so much for sharing your hearts and home with us, Erin and Ryan! Follow along with Erin on her blog, Attention to Darling, as well as on Instagram here.

P.S. Just as a reminder: we’d love to hear from you, too! If you’re interested, take a peek at our Southern Newlywed submission page and shoot us an email!
