Abigail and Leonardo’s backyard celebration is beautiful and filled with so much joy! I love hearing why they chose to marry in her family’s backyard and how they used the space to not only stay within their budget but create a wedding filled with so much charm. I’ll let Abigail give you a little more insight into their wedding planning and sweet day!

Special thanks to Nikki Neswick for capturing their day!

How did y’all meet? I was at dinner with my family while he was at the next table over having dinner with his family. Neither one of us introduced ourselves, but as fate would have it, we saw each other later that night at a mutual friend’s party and didn’t introduce ourselves! Thankfully, we saw each other again the following night and this time, Leo did his best to make an impression on me – he made sure he introduced himself and he basically swept me off my feet at that moment.

Tell me about finding your wedding dress. Willowby by Watters designed my dress, it was actually the first dress I ever tried on. It stuck out to me because of the details and how wonderful I felt wearing it.

I love greenery, ferns, and vines. I love flowers and I appreciate their beauty, but I wanted our bouquets to look very natural with the backyard. Leo’s godmother made them for us; they were full of lush green eucalyptus, stock flower, green hydrangea, and baby’s breath.

We got married in my parents’ backyard – I have lived in that house since I was five years old. We shared many memories there together as a couple and with our families and our friends. Their backyard is amazing, backing up to a forest of massive old oak trees and pines.

We did not have a first look. We ended up deciding to share that intimate moment of me walking down the aisle with our families and loved ones.

Never in my life have I felt so beautiful, loved, and appreciated. He is the kindest and most selfless person I know.

What range did your wedding budget fall into? Less than $10,000
What was one way you saved money at your wedding? Getting married in my mom and dad’s backyard was a huge budget saver!

I know this will sound so cliche, but the whole day/evening was amazing and our photographer captured the moments in such a beautiful way!

Tell us all about the proposal! The most amazing and romantic thing that has ever happened! My family members are so important to me – Leo knows this and took that into account for our engagement. For years, I have traveled to Central America with my family and I have the most wonderful memories in Nicaragua. I thought this was going to be just a trip, a wonderful trip nonetheless, but I could never have imagined how wonderful it was going to be! Leo planned the whole trip behind my back for months, made sure all my immediate family was able to fly down, and took off a week of work. The second day into the trip, we are all at the pool overlooking the ocean, and Leo pulls me aside – I did not suspect anything until this moment. He brought me out to this point on the side of a tiny cliff facing out to the ocean. He begins to reassure everything I already knew about how much he loves me and cares for our relationship – obviously I’m crying like a baby.
When did y’all get married? March 11, 2017
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 125
Did you write your own vows? Yes, we wrote our own vows.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We had Leo’s mother read a bible verse in Spanish and English – 1 Corinthians 13:4-13. My brother also read a bible verse for us.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We actually had a small cake that Leo and I cut, but for our guests, we went with gourmet donuts because they are so amazing! We got our donuts from Jupiter Donut Factory in Stuart, Fl.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I wore a necklace that my mom bought for my sister for her to wear at her wedding. I also wore an old emerald bracelet from my mother, and my best friend loaned me her blue opal ring that her grandmother gave to her.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We incorporated native Floridian plants in our wedding decor: air plants, orchids, and ferns. My dad works in the citrus industry and my parents have orange trees in their yard, and the orange blossoms were in full bloom – it smelt like heaven.
How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? Leo and I went to marriage counseling which was super helpful and gave us a great template and outline on how we want to handle our marriage.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? We had to decide and remember that we need to focus on each other and the love we share, that the wedding, the guests, and the food were all just background noise. Not getting caught up in the extra things was important to remember – as long as we got married is all that counted to us.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? True Love Vintage Decor from Stuart, FL. This company rented all of our decor for our wedding, and they totally nailed the whole shabby chic/enchanted/whimsical look we were going for! Our photographer Nikki Neswick did an amazing job coordinating all of the moving parts and massive families that we have.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Breathe! You will be married by the end of the night so that is what is important.
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? We are living together (finally!) and planning our next trip to Nicaragua! We are so excited that our wedding went as planned – it was honestly a dream and we are on cloud nine!

It’s an incredible feat when a wedding feels magical enough to takes guests out of their normal lives, but makes them feel right at home at the same time, and I’m convinced that Mattie and Louis accomplished just that. They chose to be married on Mattie’s parents’ property, which is not only breathtakingly beautiful, but also deeply meaningful–it’s where Mattie’s parents and her brother were married, too. Mattie grew up admiring the garden parties her parents frequently hosted, so she and Louis decided to adopt the same elegant, but relaxed, feel for their wedding. With the help of Simply Chic Events and Beehive Events, they combined the garden’s natural aesthetic with plenty of nods to their families, the most stunning blooms, and a hearty helping of Southern hospitality to create a day that was uniquely theirs.

Many thanks to Kate Headley for sharing this gorgeous day with us in V9!

We got married on June 18, 2016 at 6 P.M. at Old Mill Cottage, my parents’ home in Crozier, Virginia. Because we knew our wedding would be outdoors, we targeted an early summer wedding date to try and avoid the risk of high heat that is common in Virginia in July and August. The ceremony and cocktails were held in different locations of the arboretum and gardens. The dinner reception was held under tents. I had always dreamed of being married in the gardens of the home where I grew up. It is a beautiful place, made even more special to me because my parents were married in a grove of trees on the property, and my older brother and his wife chose Old Mill Cottage for their wedding and reception as well. My parents love the outdoors and gardening and have spent years building a gorgeous, five-acre arboretum which provided perfect spots for the ceremony, cocktails, and reception.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. What was your favorite thing about it? My mom and I went shopping in New York one weekend and found my dress at Gabriella New York Bridal Salon. I had been eyeing Marchesa’s Azalea gown on Pinterest before we went shopping, and when I put it on, I knew it was the one. I thought it was the perfect garden wedding dress and loved the crystal and flower petal appliqués and airy tulle overlay.
Describe your bridesmaids’ dresses. How did you choose them? I wanted mix and match bridesmaids’ dresses, so I shared the color palette with my bridesmaids and asked them to pick out a couple dresses they liked in that palette. From there, I was able to coordinate their picks, and everyone got to wear something they liked!

Tell us a bit about the wedding ceremony. What part was most special to you? Did you include any special readings? We had a Christian-Jewish interfaith ceremony. Louis and I spent a lot of time putting the ceremony together to blend our traditions, cultures, and religions, which made it very unique and personal to us.
Who participated in your ceremony? Family members, friends? If so, what did they do? Louis’ sister, Rebecca, co-officiated the ceremony with the minister from my church growing up. The minister conducted the ceremony and exchange of vows, while Rebecca led the sections of the ceremony honoring Jewish wedding traditions. Our niece and nephew, who are also our godchildren, were the flower girl and ring bearer. They are so special to us and it was wonderful that we were able to include them in such a big way. They were adorable and really stole the show!

My parents are beekeepers, so we had a subtle bee and honey theme throughout the wedding: specialty honeybee cocktails, bee emblems on the invitations and paper goods, a honeycomb-inspired display for the escort cards, clover honey ice cream to go with the cake, and of course, a jar of Old Mill Cottage honey for the guests to take home!

What was the design inspiration for your wedding? Why was this design special to you as a couple? The season and the botanical setting of our home and property were the design inspiration, as well as the style of entertaining that I learned from my parents. My parents like to host outdoor dinner parties that are best described as casual, elegant, French-style dinners with colorful tables, lots of flowers and candles, and bottles of wine on the table. Our wedding planners expertly developed the beautiful details of our wedding and reception to complement the setting and style that were important to us.

We had the good fortune to work with a very creative floral designer who also lives “in the country” and appreciates the beauty of interesting botanicals, as well as the more traditional flowers. I wanted vintage-inspired bouquets and arrangements that used seasonal flowers and greenery in our color palette.

We had one kiddie table set up outside the tent for all the young kids we were having at the wedding. At each kid’s “place setting,” there were jars of colored pencils, mini etch-a-sketches, small wooden toys in wood berry baskets, and a kids Polaroid camera.

Tell us about your wedding cake or sweets. The base layers of the cake were completely covered in buttercream and then faded to a scraped naked style as you worked your way up the layers. The hand-piped buttercream on the base layers mimicked the embroidery on my grandmother’s family’s antique silk piano shawl, which was used on the altar table at the ceremony, and which also provided the inspiration for the design of our invitations. The cake was adorned with cascading fresh flowers. Our cake was layered with two different flavors: lemon zest cake with blackberry buttercream and lavender cake with honey buttercream. They were both served with clover honey ice cream.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We met in 2007 in New Orleans when we were both attending Tulane University. We knew of each other through mutual friends and eventually found ourselves hanging out in the same crowd. After a few nights out on the town here and there, we could tell there was a connection. We both refer to one specific late night that ended at the infamous dive bar near campus called Snake and Jake’s as the night that really sparked our relationship. And the rest is history!
Describe the proposal: Louis proposed to me at the gorgeous historic Driskill Hotel in Austin. We had just seen a comedy show and decided to get a drink at the Driskill Hotel bar. While we were enjoying a cocktail, Louis excused himself to go to “the bathroom.” A few minutes later, the concierge came up to me and said Louis would like for me to join him in the Governor’s Suite and handed me a key. I knew right then what was about to happen! I went up to the room and Louis was on one knee out on the porch overlooking downtown Austin. It was very romantic and a night I’ll never forget!
How many guests attended your wedding? About 225 guests
What were some of the highlights of the reception? My stepdad’s toast, the Hora (chair dance), all of the kids on the dance floor, and our amazing band that had everyone dancing!
Tell us about your grand exit. Louis and I stayed until the band stopped playing at midnight and hopped on the bus with the rest of our guests back to the hotel, where we continued the party.
Did you include any Southern traditions in your wedding? In the fall of 2015 after we got engaged, Louis and his parents traveled to Virginia to spend the weekend with my family at Old Mill Cottage. We had a ceremonial burial of a bottle of Virginia Gentlemen bourbon under a garden statue at the site of the ceremony to ensure good weather for our wedding day…and it worked! Also, Louis’ father and brother served as his best men.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We just moved from Austin, Texas to Mobile, Alabama and we’re getting settled into our first home together! We’re looking forward to establishing ourselves in Mobile and eventually starting a family.
What advice would you give to someone currently planning his or her wedding? Make sure to enjoy every second of your wedding week! It goes by so quickly, and there’s no reason to stress over the little stuff at that point.

Oh my, I tried to pick just one favorite detail but there were so many that I don’t know where to start! All of this is so amazing — the location, mixing the traditions, the bee details (I die!) — and of course the sweet dogs and this gorgeous couple. Love it! Thank you for sharing this gorgeous wedding!

I adore each one of the weddings that we publish in our print issues, and while it’s sometimes hard to pick a favorite, there are always a few that I simply cannot get out of my head. Case in point, Callie and Sinclair’s amazing wedding at Cheekwood from Volume 9! There’s just something about their magnolia-filled wedding that is undeniably Southern and completely magical. For their spring celebration, Callie and Sinclair worked with the Social Office to create a wedding day that was, in Callie’s words, “exquisitely beautiful and tons of fun!” While I can’t personally comment on the fun level, I would absolutely agree on the exquisitely beautiful part. With the help of lots of draping, and just a few chandeliers, Dori and her team transformed a white party tent on the Swan Lawn behind the Cheekwood into a reception venue filled with classic details and bountiful florals.

We’re sure glad Kristyn Hogan was there to capture all the goodness, and that she gave us the honor of sharing it in V9!

What was the design inspiration for your wedding? The Southern magnolia! After we got engaged, my mom and I started wedding Pinterest boards and both ended up pinning several magnolia photos, so it really started from there. I liked the Southern significance of using magnolias as a design element, but there were other fun reasons too. During middle school, my friends and I spent many fun hours hanging out in a huge magnolia tree in our front yard, where we had constructed a fairly sophisticated treehouse called The Fort. My family also traditionally uses lots of magnolia cuttings from our trees during the holidays or parties to decorate the house, mailboxes, and anything else we could think of. Maybe we have just always associated magnolias with good feelings and good times. The magnolia theme was used throughout all of our wedding events, beginning with our magnolia-imprinted save the dates and ending with a magnolia garland on our getaway car as we left the reception–and everything in between.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. What was your favorite thing about it? I found my dress at Vera Wang in Chicago. Vera Wang salons have a very relaxed and calm atmosphere, which suits me and made the process very enjoyable. I wanted to find a gown that was somewhat traditional, but had a modern flair and would be appropriate for an outdoor Southern garden wedding. I ended up choosing “Leda” from the Vera Wang Iconic collection, a strapless dress with illusion lace and layers of floral lace that was perfect for the garden setting. It was so comfortable and easy to wear. I knew immediately when I tried it on that it was the right dress for me.

For both our ceremony and reception, we chose flowers in shades of white, blush, and pale peach, and used accents of magnolia throughout. Soon after we mailed our magnolia-inspired save the dates, we met with our longtime florist Mark O’Bryan to explain our vision. He came up with a design plan using magnolias as a foundation and our favorite flowers to add softness and color. We used mainly garden roses, tulips, ranunculus, and anemones. We ended up choosing David Austin Juliet garden roses as one of the main flowers, not only because we loved the more natural shape and scent, but also because Juliets happened to match to the blush ribbon on our save the date perfectly! Many beautiful flowers were used at our wedding and it was important to us that they not just go to waste afterwards. We commissioned Thistle Farms Studios to make beautiful notecards and journals using our wedding flowers in their handcrafted papermaking process. Thistle Farms produces bath products, candles, and handcrafted papers to raise money for their mission of providing safe havens to women survivors of abuse and human trafficking. It was a meaningful way for us to give new life and purpose to our wedding flowers, and we will forever cherish our beautiful journals for both memories.

Tell us a bit about the wedding ceremony. Our ceremony was held outdoors in the Wills Perennial Garden at Cheekwood. As guest arrived, they were greeted with live music and offered a glass of rose champagne or pink lemonade as they headed up the walkway to the ceremony site. Magnolia-covered pedestals with urns of blush wedding flowers guided guests along the path, where they were offered hand-embroidered linen hankies to catch “Tears of Joy” and “Keep Warm as they Wed” pashminas. Guests passed under an arbor of hundreds of beautiful pale lavender blooms, where they were given wedding programs and escorted to the seats. We wanted to include religious elements in our ceremony, so a large wooden cross with magnolia swags was created to frame our bridal party, and our minister used the lectern from my great-grandfather’s church. The most special part of the ceremony was standing together in front of our family and friends on the most important day of our lives and walking back up the aisle as Mr. and Mrs. Myers. Seeing everyone’s happy faces and all of the white rose petals being tossed in the air as we walked by is a moment we will never forget.

We got engaged in late summer and knew we wanted a spring wedding date, so we chose April 16, 2016, mainly because it had a nice ring to it. I had always envisioned an outdoor, Southern garden wedding, and Sinclair and I both wanted the ceremony and reception to be held at the same place, so Cheekwood became the obvious choice for us. I have always considered Cheekwood one of the most beautiful places in Nashville, and it also holds great sentimental significance to me since it’s located in the neighborhood where I grew up. I actually had my fifth birthday party at Cheekwood, and several of the same friends and parents who were guests then came back to celebrate my wedding 23 years later!

Who participated in your ceremony? Family members, friends? If so, what did they do? I had fourteen bridesmaids and Sinclair had fourteen groomsmen, all of whom are very special people in our lives, ranging from family to childhood and college friends. We also had other close friends, along with my niece and nephew, who participated as greeters. Todd Jones, our minister at First Presbyterian Church in Nashville, officiated our ceremony and Chris Simonsen, a family friend, sang a beautiful solo of the “The Prayer.”

Did you have a cocktail hour? If so, what was it like? Yes, cocktails were served in the Wisteria Arbor and a cocktail tent located at the entrance to the dinner tent. Guests mingled and nibbled on appetizers such as mini BLTs and lamb crostini and sipped signature cocktails named “The Blushing Bride” (Veuve Clicquot rose champagne garnished with lemon and lavender) and the “Oh Happy Day” (a Tennessee whiskey slush). The Wisteria Arbor is one of our favorite Cheekwood spots–it has a breathtaking view of Tennessee’s rolling hills. We chose the Wisteria Arbor for some of our engagement photographs, and for my bridal portraits. This was also the time that we used to sneak away for a private first meal and a quiet moment for the two of us before joining family and friends at the reception.

Overall, our reception had a very elegant, Southern look, but it was also very important to us that we created an upbeat and lively atmosphere so guests could have fun and enjoy themselves. The reception was held in a tent on the Swan Lawn behind the Cheekwood mansion, and the space was so flawlessly designed and executed by Dori and team that the tent appeared to be an extension of the Cheekwood mansion. It was amazing to see the transformation of a cavernous, plain white party tent into what appeared to be a beautiful Southern mansion ballroom.

What was your reception like? Most of our friends love to dance, and once Big Swing and the Ballroom Blasters came on, I don’t think we ever left the dance floor. The entire evening was just what we wanted: exquisitely beautiful and tons of fun!

Tell us about your wedding cake or sweets. We had a six-tier cream cheese pound cake with raspberry filling decorated with cascading magnolia flowers and white icing. The cake was displayed on a glass chandelier table with magnolia leaves underneath the glass.

After the last song of the evening, a Dixieland-style brass band led an exit parade for the guests as they lined the walkway to our getaway car. A few minutes later, we ran down the steps and out the front door, past all of our family and friends as they showered us with what seemed to be mountains of confetti! Our getaway car was a white vintage Bentley decorated with a Just Married sign and, of course, a magnolia garland on the back.

How did the two of you meet? From Sinclair: We first met in Nashville through mutual friends. I had my eye on Callie for several months before she finally agreed to a dinner date in July 2013. We have been together ever since!
Describe the proposal: From Sinclair: I proposed to Callie on August 26, 2015. I had planned to keep the proposal a surprise from Callie, but let our families in on the secret so they could be in town to celebrate with us. Things got more complicated than expected when I realized Callie was a bridesmaid in an out-of-town wedding on the weekend I had planned to propose. After some quick rescheduling, I caught Callie off-guard a few days later than planned with a traditional on-one-knee proposal when I was picking her up for dinner at our favorite restaurant. Afterwards, Callie was anxious to share our news and couldn’t figure out why no one was answering her calls or texts, until we arrived at the restaurant and everyone was waiting for us with raised glasses of champagne in a special, flower-filled private dining room. It was a great night of happiness, hugs, and celebratory toasts.
How did you prepare for marriage while planning your wedding? We met with our minister for premarital counseling. We were also not shy about asking questions and taking advice from our married friends and our family members.
How many guests attended your wedding? 330 of our most favorite people in the world!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? Children are the next big plan, but not for a while. We are just enjoying married life and building a home together. We could not be happier!
