Most couples insist they want their reception to be an all-out, blow-out party, but I’m pretty sure Grace + Jamie’s South Carolina wedding was the best party their guests had ever attended.  I mean, just look at the Technicolor images from Tim Willoughby: does this backyard wedding not scream carnival celebration?  I know there’s a whole lot of awesomeness going on in this post, so let me highlight a few of my favorites: bridesmaids in Kelly green David’s Bridal frocks with ultra-cute Converse All-Stars, homemade gingerbread cookies in spiffy icing get-ups, a balloon archway at the end of the bride’s driveway, DIY wildflower bouquets… a-mazing!  We know you want to see more of Grace + Jamie’s fun celebration, so we have another post to share with you!

How did the two of you meet?  Tell us your story.  It’s kind of funny because I was actually his sister’s housemate in college and she was the one who originally introduced us.  I would always cut his hair, which is how we started to get to know each other.  While we were in college, he was always dating someone else, which was just fine with me – since we weren’t interested in each other that way :)  Things started to happen when his sister got engaged and we were both asked to be in the wedding. Guess who we got paired up with to walk down the aisle? You got it! We got paired up with each other! We had so much fun with each other that weekend that he gave me a call afterwards (don’t worry – he was single at that time).  At that point, he was still finishing up school in Ohio and I was living in Colorado.  On phone call number two, he asked me if he could take me on a date in three weeks. I asked him how he would go about doing that – being long distance and all – and he answered that he would fly out to Denver and take me on a date. I was floored that he would fly all the way out to Denver JUST to take me on a date! WHOA! Anyway, he took me snowboarding at Vail and asked me to be his girlfriend – and the rest is history!
Describe the proposal.  It was perfectly simple.  He had gone up to Michigan right before Thanksgiving (without my knowledge) to take my dad out to lunch and to ask him if he could have my hand in marriage.  It wasn’t until after Christmas, when we were in Cincinnati for a wedding, that he proposed.  The day after the wedding, we went to mass at a church that was set on hill overlooking the city.  It was a beautiful, clear December day and after mass, Jamie wanted to walk around the little cobblestone street German town outside the church.  I was freezing and couldn’t understand why he wanted to “look at one more look out point” – but I’m so happy that he did!  We ended up right in front of the church where we started. There was a beautiful lookout right in front!  He said so many beautiful things to me but it wasn’t until he started to take my warm coffee out of my hand that I began to suspect that something was up. He asked me to marry him and guess what? I said yes :)
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Joyful, festive, whimsical
What was the design inspiration for your wedding? Really, our personalities were the biggest inspiration.  We are both very laid back and love playing games more than anything else!  With regards to the ceremony, we just wanted the joy in our relationship to shine through the readings, the homily and the music.  With regards to the reception, we were going for a small-town carnival feel.  The budget was tight, but our priorities were the DJ, the alcohol, the photographer and the games.  I think we did alright!
What was your favorite design element of your big day? It’s a toss-up between the balloon arches (which were on either end of our driveway), and the big round light bulbs strung over the tables.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Our shoes! All of the bridesmaids (and even the bride!) wore white Converse All Stars, and all of the groomsmen (and the groom) wore black slip on Vans.

I love how Brooke + Nathan’s traditional ceremony at the Huntsville First United Methodist Church gave way to a citrus-colored party at the Historic Roundhouse Depot.  (Check out the exposed wood beams!)  I love the sea of Chinese paper lanterns, and is there anything more Southern than a lemonade + juice bar?  Here’s another SW first: a sequin-trimmed four-tier vanilla cake?  Thank you, Nikki Mason, cake baker extraordinaire!  And one more thank-you to Joy Marie Photo for sharing this deep South soiree. Be sure to take a peek at her blog post of Brooke + Nathan’s wedding here.

Describe your wedding flowers: The ceremony flowers were very romantic and Victorian. I adore peonies, but they were out of season, so I went for garden roses, hydrangeas, and callas during the ceremony. I glammed up my bouquet a little with netting, feathers and rhinestones. My bridesmaids carried light pink, peach, and green flowers, while my bouquet was mostly white. The flower girl carried a pomander and our ring bearer carried a pillow of green mums. For the reception, we spiced things up with orchids, brighter hydrangeas, and dahlias.
Describe your wedding cake: My cake was a four-tier vanilla cake, each layer with a different design. Chip at Gatehouse decorated the cake with bright-colored mums, orchids and roses. I went to a fabric store and bought some sequin trim to add some sparkle to the cake. I had friends calling the next day to see if we had any left over. Nathan’s cake was two layers of chocolate cake. Nikki Mason added reese’s peanut butter cups to give it a two-toned look. Our two attendants, my nine-year-old twin cousins, said that they liked Nathan’s cake even better than mine.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Nathan came down with the flu a week before the wedding. He recovered quickly, but then I got sick. I had taken off work the entire week to finish last minute details. Instead I spent most of the week in bed sick. Even at our rehearsal dinner I had a fever of 101. However, my prayers were answered and on our wedding day I felt wonderful. I couldn’t believe it! Luckily, during the week I was sick, so many people stepped in to help take care of the last minute details. I appreciated them all so much.
Were there any wedding traditions or new ideas you included in the wedding? Instead of wedding favors, we each donated to our favorite charities. We wanted to do this in honor of our guests and in memory of our loved ones who have passed. I also really wanted to let my bridesmaids know how much I appreciated them. They had gone above and beyond to help make this year the best of my life, so I wanted to make their gifts extra special. I gave my very favorite things to my very favorite people as a thank-you for participating in the wedding. I ordered monogrammed green bags with brown letters to go with our wedding colors and each bag contained my favorite book, movie, candle, pepper jelly, chocolates, CDs and earrings to match their dresses. Also, instead of bubbles or sparklers, we left the reception to our guests shaking Auburn pom-poms and singing the fight song since that is where we first met.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? When the reception ended, I hugged my dad goodbye and headed through the shakers in the crowd to get in the car. On our ride home, we talked about what a wonderful and perfect day it had been and how happy we were. I was just a little sad because my sister had to leave the reception sick and I hated that she has missed our goodbye. When we arrived home, I realized she hadn’t really left because she was sick but so she could decorate the house for us. It was filled with candles and there were rose petals everywhere and even champagne and chocolate covered strawberries just like the night of the proposal. I thought it was the sweetest thing that she really wanted to make sure we had the perfect ending as well.
Did you write your own vows?  If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? No we didn’t. We had a dear friend officiate the ceremony and it was very personal yet traditional.  However, we did include an unusual element. We used a hand ceremony. We held hands as the minister spoke: “These are the hands that will give you strength when you need it. And lastly, these are the hands that, even when wrinkled and aged, will still be reaching for yours, still giving you the same unspoken tenderness with just a touch.”
What’s next for you as a couple?  What are you looking forward to in the future?  We plan to do a lot of traveling. Nathan has traveled the world so I have lots of catching up to do. Soon we will go to Africa to take the trip he had planned for me before he got sick. (His illness brought him home one week before my plane was scheduled to leave.) We are also saving to purchase a home together!

Congratulations, Brooke + Nathan!  Enjoy your travels together!

I love the wide open space of this venue. Incredible! And they did a good job with the decorating and not being overwhelmed by the space.

I like the idea of giving to charity. Very cool. I gotta know what’s in those drinks? I see orange slices. I loved all the open space also. Huntsville Depot was a great place to have a reception.

  6. avatar Brooke reply

The drinks are called Pimm’s Cup. The caterer, Catering by Narvell, came up with the idea. Nathan’s older sister gave us the idea to donate to charities.

My husband got the stomach flu right before our wedding and luckily it cleared up the day of the wedding. Congrats that you both got well before the wedding.

Oh y’all, I love this wedding so much!  Such a great Epic Rerun from Amelia and Justin Lyon!

This wedding is on the top of my favorites list this year.  Erin + Jeremiah’s day is the essence of family, togetherness, simplicity, joy, love… I could go on and on.  This story doesn’t needs words to be told.  The incredible images from Amelia Lyon Photography speak volumes!  Planning by Lisa Kennedy at Landmark Events, bridal make-up and hair by Nicole DeAnne Bridal Hair & Makeup (be sure to check out Nicole’s Blog post on Erin).

From Amelia: August 8th of 2008 was an awesome day for us. We were fortunate enough to be booked by Erin and Jeremiah, who had contacted us just weeks before this wonderful day. I knew there was a good reason why we hadn’t already booked that day yet and then these two wonderful people came along! 8.8.08 was unlike any other wedding, maybe because it wasn’t actually a wedding, Erin and Jeremiah decided to go the nontraditional way and exchange vows. They wanted 8.8.08 to remain special to them as it was the day that they committed and celebrated their love together with all of their closest family and friends. Erin let her boys plan part of the night just for the other kid-friends. The details included character drawings, air brush body art, blow-up balloons, and a photo booth! I loved that this party was kid friendly! At the end of the night, the guests were then invited to grab a handful of rose petals and throw them into the ocean as they made a wishful hope for the future.

For more, visit Amelia’s {Blog}. Thank you so much, Amelia, for sharing these moving images with us.  And thank you Erin + Jeremiah, for reminding us what is so special about love and family!
