Though Catherine and Will did give a lot of thought to eloping, they ultimately decided they wanted to celebrate their marriage with their friends and family, so a wedding weekend it was! After a whirlwind search that ended with lots of great venues but none that felt exactly right, they found themselves on a tour of Blue Ribbon Vendor RT Lodge. The peaceful atmosphere and opportunity to have the property all to themselves for the weekend sealed the deal!

String lights, bales of hay covered in family quilts, and s’mores by the fire helped create the magical, “grown-up summer camp” feel Catherine and Will were hoping for. And judging from the joy in these photos, I’m thinking they’re pretty glad they didn’t decide to elope!

Thanks to Cody Myers for sharing their sweet Tennessee day with us!

The wedding dress wasn’t a detail of planning that I was especially excited about, so I put off looking until a ways into our engagement. Because we were on a tight timeline, I knew we needed to find something that day. After trying on a few dresses that were definitely not the one at different shops, we went to The Sentimentalist. The dress I ended up going with was flowy and relaxed with great lines. It had the perfect feel for our wedding, and I couldn’t have been happier!

I was very against the idea of not seeing Will until I walked down the aisle, so we both had breakfast at the lodge with our bridesmaids and groomsmen. Seeing him that morning was so nice, and it set a great tone for the day. If it was supposed to be one of the most important days of our life, it didn’t seem right not to spend most of it together! After breakfast, we went our separate ways to get ready with our friends, and then we had a first look in our wedding clothes in the woods at the Lodge.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? We gave a lot of thought to eloping, but once we decided to have a wedding weekend, we decided to get married in the mountains in North Carolina. After a whirlwind search, we decided to go look at RT Lodge in Tennessee. It isn’t what I thought we were looking for, but as we toured the property under umbrellas, the peaceful atmosphere pulled us in! It really felt like grown-up summer camp in the woods.

We used traditional Presbyterian vows, and we loved the simplicity and significance of those words that have been said time and again…”in plenty and in want; in joy and in sorrow; in sickness and in health, as long as we both shall live.” And it was so meaningful to use the words “husband” and “wife” for the first time!

The only readings we had at the ceremony were two Bible verses. One of our officiants read Romans 12:1-2, 9-18, and our other officiant read Colossians 3:12-17. We wanted our ceremony to be simple, meaningful, and very centered on God.

We wanted our ceremony music to be traditional, but walking down the aisle made me nervous, and listening to traditional processional songs made me even more nervous, so we decided to go with a more contemporary song for that part! One of our officiants suggested at an early meeting that we have everyone sing a hymn during the ceremony, and we chose one of our favorites (“Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”). We chose to have the hymn be played right after communion, so we were still sitting down in the seats with everyone, which was so sweet.

Will and I danced to Blake Shelton’s “Mine Would Be You” for our first dance. Our bluegrass band played a shortened version of it and it was really fun! My dad and I danced to Elvis’s “Sweet Caroline,” a song he would sing to me when I was a baby.

Our cocktail hour site was a grassy area just behind the ceremony site that had strung lights from trees Alex had planted and hay bales covered in family quilts around a fire. One other really sweet detail we loved was that after our rehearsal dinner, everyone hung out by the fire making s’mores and relaxing. It was the perfect ending to a really great day.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Will and I met on my first day of work at the Tennessee governor’s office (I give him a hard time because he doesn’t remember meeting me!). We slowly became office friends, and after a while, things began to shift into the possibility of becoming more. Will finally asked me out on an October Friday to go watch a Braves playoff game after work. After a somewhat bumpy first date (I was really nervous and didn’t even have my ID!), the rest of our story has been an amazing adventure!
Tell us all about the proposal! As soon as our busiest season of work ended, Will planned a trip to the Grove Park Inn in Asheville for a weekend getaway. On Saturday, we drove up the Blue Ridge Parkway to find a place to hike. After a lot of discussion with locals about where to go, we ended up at the summit of the Craggy Gardens Pinnacle trail with 360-degree views. After enjoying the view for a few minutes and taking some pictures, Will began saying some amazing things, and he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! We were able to enjoy the rest of the day up on the mountain, and then we celebrated with a perfect dinner in downtown Asheville. We didn’t tell anyone the news that day (except for every stranger I encountered!), so on Sunday, we spent the drive home calling friends, and even stopped in Knoxville to tell my mom on Mother’s Day (my dad already knew).
When did y’all get married? October 24, 2015
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 105
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: For me, the paper aspect of the wedding were something I was very excited about! I was able to create the save the dates and I painted the fireplace at the lodge and did the calligraphy, and we had Chelsea Petaja create the most wonderful invitation suite. I loved working with her and I couldn’t have been happier with the way everything turned out. I love vintage stationery and stamps, so I started collecting old stamps as soon as we got engaged. Each envelope had six or seven vintage stamps on it! One of our favorite details of the actual wedding was the ceremony and cocktail hour sites–Alex (our coordinator) made those blank canvases come to life!
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! Making sure I was wearing each category was one of the details that ended up not happening in the chaos of the weekend, so I only had a borrowed veil and new dress/shoes. BUT, there was a lot of “old” strung throughout the wedding, like the old (and blue!) Chevy truck, the cake topper, the film photography, the Super 8 video, my paternal grandparents’ wedding guest book that we used as our guest book. We laugh that our wedding was straight out of the 50s!
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? Will had a special bourbon bar during the reception, which was made up of a selection of bourbon from Southern distilleries. For our rehearsal dinner (which took place on the front lawn of RT), we ate barbecue, drank Cokes in glass bottles, and had banana pudding served in the sweetest Spode Woodland bunny bowls. Most of our food had a Southern base, from fried chicken at my bridal luncheon Friday to collards at the reception!
How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? We tried to be very intentional about the fact that the wedding was only one day in the scope of our entire marriage, so we went to a marriage seminar, had counseling with our minister, and read a lot of books together like Tim Keller’s “The Meaning of Marriage.”
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? We had Campbell Brewer film our wedding in Super 8 video. The nostalgic feel of our video is incredible, and all of our details fit perfectly with that medium. He edited amazing videos for us. Because we had an amazing film photographer (Cody Myers) shoot the weeding, the video truly feels like our photos came to life! I loved using the wedding as an excuse to hire really talented people I know. My friend, artist James Worsham, created our altar–it was so perfect! He really set the scene with the wood altar, the fabric draped over, and the copper flower stands he made! Also, I had an artist I know from high school, Adele Yonchak, paint small canvases for my bridesmaids; they turned out so perfectly, and I loved being able to give them to my closest friends.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? It was really important to us that the day be centered around the ceremony. Communion was served during our ceremony, and being able to experience that sacred moment with our closest family and friends while rain lightly fell was so special.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your wedding? Will loves old trucks, and I was able to borrow an amazing 1960s Chevy pickup truck from a couple I know in Knoxville. There was a road next to our ceremony site, so Will drove us away from the ceremony in that! Our videographers got amazing Super 8 footage from the bed of the truck, and even running alongside while we were driving.

For Chesne, who grew up in Atlanta, getting married at the Swan House had always been her dream. Like any good Southern girl, she knew that it would be too hot for an outdoor wedding after May (and fall is for football!), so she and Raul were thrilled to be able to secure a May 7th wedding date at her dream venue! The beautiful historic home not only served as a stunning backdrop for their ceremony, but as inspiration for their entire celebration. The team at Amy Osaba Design created florals that had an organic, romantic, and “a bit wild” feel that were the perfect complement to both the mansion and Chesne’s Carol Hannah gown. Chesne and Raul also worked with Candice of Chancey Charm Weddings to create a wedding day that was a tribute to their life together in the South–a South that, to them, is “hospitable, romantic, delicious, fun, and in full bloom.” What a beautiful sentiment!

Big hugs to Blue Ribbon Vendor Anna Shackleford for sharing this sweet day with us in our ninth issue!

I found my dress at The Sentimentalist in Atlanta. I went with my mom and two of my bridesmaids, and it was our second stop of the day. I was having a hard time making a decision between two Carol Hannah dresses because I liked the top on one, but loved the skirt on the other. The Sentimentalist actually has a great relationship with the designer, and I was very fortunate because they were able to request a custom design that combined the two dresses that I loved!

I knew from the beginning that I wanted to use Amy Osaba Design for our flowers. I love how their arrangements are really loose and organic, and all of their work feels so romantic. We scheduled an appointment and met with Mary McLeod, who is one of their main designers. I had so much fun at our appointment–it was definitely one of the highlights of the planning process! When I met with Mary, I didn’t want to give too much direction on the bouquet, and we instead talked about the overall feel. I wanted the feel to be loose, romantic, and a bit wild, but didn’t specify any particular flower. I really loved how Mary used both greenery and flowers in our color palette, but my favorite detail was the beautiful ribbons that she used to tie it all together.

What was the most memorable or touching moment of your wedding day? My favorite moment from our wedding day was our first look. I am so thankful that we did a first look before the ceremony and were able to experience that emotion in an intimate setting. Raul and I both cried, and it was so incredibly special. The moment felt really special and intimate, and we were really able to enjoy all of the emotions that we were feeling on that day. It also helped with the timeline after the ceremony and allowed us to go straight into the party!

Growing up in Atlanta, the Swan House was always my dream venue and we really didn’t consider any other locations. We also knew that we would have to get married in the spring–an outdoor wedding in Atlanta would be too hot after May, and fall is for football. We booked the Swan House for May 7, and everything else stemmed from that. The house served as a constant source of inspiration throughout the planning process and was the most stunning backdrop for the ceremony.

Tell us a bit about the wedding ceremony. What part was most special to you? Did you include any special readings? Our ceremony was on the lawn of the Swan House, and the home served as the most beautiful backdrop for our big day. My dad and I were hidden inside while the guests were seated, and I will never forget the moment that the doors finally opened and we walked down the steps together.
What songs did you use for your ceremony? My favorite song is “Tiny Dancer” by Elton John and I knew that I wanted to incorporate it into our big day somehow. We had a four-string band for our ceremony, so we had them do an instrumental version for my entrance. It was such a unique touch that brought a personal element to our ceremony.

Did you include any Southern traditions in your wedding? Our ceremony and cocktail hour were outside at the Swan House and we wanted to take no chances when it came to the weather. The Swan House is a historic site and we were not allowed to bury a bottle of bourbon on-site, so naturally, we snuck in to do it anyways. On April 7 at 5:30 P.M. (exactly one month before the ceremony), we secretly buried a bottle of Four Roses and prayed for a sunny day. We also included mini bottles of Four Roses in our welcome boxes to include our guests in the tradition. The big day went off without a hitch–not a cloud in the sky!

Did you have a cocktail hour? If so, what was it like? We had an outdoor cocktail hour in the Boxwood Gardens adjacent to the Swan House. The string quartet continued to play and hors d’oeuvres were passed. Something we love about the South is tailgating, and although our cocktail hour was far from a football tailgate, it had many of the same elements, including perfect weather, Georgia pines, great food and music, and even koozies we had designed especially for the occasion.

What kind of food did you serve at your reception? We are big foodies and knew from the beginning that one of the things we cared about the most was the food. We used Sun in My Belly, a local restaurant, as our caterer and they did an amazing job! Dinner began with a panzanella salad with heirloom tomatoes and cornbread croutons. Guests then chose between two entrees: miso glazed salmon with a blueberry compote, or juniper and fig roasted pork tenderloin. We also served two very Southern sides of collard greens and roasted cauliflower.
What were some of the highlights of the reception? I think one of the highlights for our guests was the late night Chick-fil-A that we brought in towards the end of the evening. It was the perfect treat after a night of dancing!

Our favorite detail was the cake table. We couldn’t decide on a favorite flavor at our tasting, so we decided to do three different cakes! The main cake was vanilla cream, but we also had a lemon buttercream cake and a rose cake with coconut buttercream frosting and a blueberry jam filling. The exteriors of the cake were pink ombre that matched perfectly with the décor, and our florist added greenery to all three. They were displayed on a big farm table and we absolutely loved the presentation.

Tell us about your grand exit. We had our last dance to “Georgia on My Mind” by Ray Charles. It was the perfect end to our Southern affair! We then went straight to our exit, but had to get creative about how to do it because the Atlanta History Center is a historical site and was pretty strict about what they would allow. We ended up passing out a mixture of eco-friendly confetti and rose petals for guests to toss as we made our way to the car.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We met while working at the Abercrombie & Fitch headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. We both worked in merchandising for sweaters and sat a table away from each other, but didn’t really get to know each other until after a year of working on the same team. At 3 A.M., following an evening at a favorite rooftop bar with mutual friends, we ended up going to Waffle House and chatting for hours about our families, childhoods, and our likes and dislikes. I knew that this was something special after that very first night.
Describe the proposal: From Raul: After three years of dating, we flew to New York from Atlanta to repeat our Belmont weekend date for the third time. We both love the city and our frequent trips there had become an integral component of our relationship, so there was no doubt that that’s where we would get engaged. We stayed at the beautiful Nomad Hotel and planned each day to incorporate all of our favorite things. Of course, there was the Belmont (where this time, we saw a Triple Crown win!), and meals at L’Artusi’s, Gramercy Park Tavern, and our favorite sandwiches from the Birdbath Café. Finally, on Sunday night, we headed to Cobble Hill for drinks and a walk through the park. On a romantic stroll to Lucali’s, we took a detour down a street we’d never walked before. On the front steps of a stranger’s beautiful brownstone at 204 Union Street in Brooklyn, we got engaged and celebrated down the block with our favorite meal.
How many guests attended your wedding? 200
What is the one thing that made your wedding different from anyone else’s wedding? The thing that set our wedding apart was definitely our venue. The Swan House was built in 1928 for the Inman family, and it’s one of Atlanta’s most recognizable landmarks. I still can’t believe that we were lucky enough to get married at such a stunning place.
What was Southern about your wedding? Many of our guests were visiting Atlanta (or at least, seeing the city through our eyes) for the first time, and we wanted to celebrate and share with our family and friends all of the wonderful times we’ve had here. Our wedding was a tribute to our life together in the South–a South free from caricature or pretense, a South that is hospitable, romantic, delicious, fun, and in full bloom. Beginning with our welcome boxes, which featured peaches, bottles of Coke, copies of Garden and Gun, and other Southern touches, and ending with the late night Chick-fil-A, our wedding was Southern through and through. Our focus was the food (because we love to eat!), and our Southern fare was a big hit on the wedding day. During cocktail hour, fried green tomatoes, mini corn muffins with Carolina pulled pork, and spicy pimento cheese were served. For our seated meal, we had green goddess salad and pork tenderloin with collard greens. From the massive Georgia pines surrounding the Swan House to our favorite country tunes, our wedding embodied the best of Atlanta and the South that we love.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? Raul is starting business school at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, so we just moved to Evanston, Illinois. We’re so excited for this next chapter in our lives and are happy to be living right outside of Chicago.

When Marilisa from Martel Event described this shoot to me, she noted that the peach and neutral tones used made it fitting for spring, summer, or fall — and I couldn’t agree more! From the picturesque farmhouse setting at Half-Mile Farm to the natural texture in the bride’s skirt, I was captivated by each thoughtful detail, and hope it provides lots of fall wedding inspiration for y’all this morning, too!

Big hugs to Davy Whitener for these photos!

From Martel Event:
With a stunning setting like Old Edwards Inn & Spa’s Half-Mile Farm, it’s not hard to dream up a lakeside elopement to celebrate the commitment and unity of two people. The color palette and overall feel of the aesthetic was inspired by the natural muslin fibers of Carol Hannah’s Kensington skirt. The casual linen texture made elegant with the fullness of the skirt embodied the carefree and timeless spirit of the couple we imagined would pursue this type of gathering.

Martha McIntosh used a mostly neutral color palette for the florals, allowing the beauty of the couple and the setting to enhance the floral story. By including subtle pops of peach in both the centerpiece and bouquet, the flowers were given a fresh and playful feel – similar to how relaxed the couple feels with one another. The neutral tones of the guest table details as well as the paper goods created by Lydia Whitener ensure that the details are not bound to a particular season, but could easily be assimilated into a spring, summer, or fall affair.

For a small fete consisting of only family or close friends, we envisioned the couple adorning their guest table with collected heirlooms of china and mix-and-match flatware. The wedding cake, designed with a delicate stitching pattern and adorned simply with silk ribbon and single peony sits atop a hand-made cake stand cut from a single piece of wood- another heirloom for the couple to remember their wedding day by for years to come.

Gorgeous! Such attention to detail. It screams “southern” in the most elegant way possible. I love the bridge and groom tags in the forks as funny as that sounds. Jealous!
