Southern Weddings

Author: Marissa

When I first told BDK (my handsome husband) I was going to start writing a Southern recipe column he literally laughed out loud! I know you’re thinking what a mean man, but he really is as sweet as the pie I cannot cook. We always joke that I am culinarily challenged – so when we were sitting in one of our brainstorming meetings and I volunteered to write a recipe feature you can understand his surprise. Well, just for you fabulous readers I’ve decided to put away my debit card and tie on my seersucker apron.

I am so excited to share our first recipe with you: my Mama’s Homemade Pound Cake. Yum! (She even included her lower calorie version!). Download the recipe card here and start your collection today!

What you’ll need:
1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter (LC Version: Use low fat margarine instead of butter).
3 cups sugar (LC Version: 1 1/2 cups sugar and 1 1/2 cups Splenda).
1 cup sour cream (LC Version: Use non-fat sour cream or plain non-fat Greek yogurt).
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3 cups all-purpose flour
6 large eggs (LC Version: Use 3 egg whites and 3 whole eggs).
1 teaspoon vanilla

Photo from Smitten Kitchen

Directions:
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
In a large mixing bowl, whip the butter and sugar together. Add the sour cream and mix until creamy. Sift the baking soda and flour together. Add to the creamed mixture alternating with eggs, beating each egg 1 at a time. Add the vanilla and pour the mixture into a greased and floured 10-inch bunt pan. Bake for approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes.
For a little added deliciousness whip together a bit of powdered sugar, a splash of milk and a touch of vanilla extract. Whip until smooth and then drizzle over cooled cake for a tasty glaze. Sounds delicious, right? I promise you it’s divine!

What’s your favorite Southern recipe? Send it my way. We’re looking for all your best from below the Mason-Dixon. Find out all the details on submitting your favorite recipe here.

While I don’t think I have any decidedly Southern recipes, I have to say that I’m LOVING this new column! What a great idea!!! I remember asking about “the first meal as a married couple” and there was a lot of helpful feedback from all the readers–this is a great addition to the blog and the wannabe Martha Stewart in me is jumping for joy!!!!!

Does the ribbon curl/burn when you bake the charms in the cake for the cake/riboon pull?

    • avatar Marissa reply

Hi Martha! I would instruct not to bake the pulls into the cake. Most cake pull instructions suggest building the cake and icing all but the bottom edge. Then lay the cake pulls out evenly around the cake and use a long thin spatula to slide the ribbon under the cake. Then frost the bottom edge. Hope that helps, and be sure to share pics with us if you make cake pulls! xx

Hello, ladies + gents! Now that we have our super-fab team photos back from the amazing Millie Holloman, we thought we’d do some proper introductions! Some of us you’ve already met, some of us you may be meeting for the first time — but after this little Sit a Spell series, we hope you’ll feel like you know us even better! You’ve already met Nicole and Sierra, and now it’s Marissa’s turn! Marissa is one of the warmest and most welcoming people you’ll ever have the pleasure of getting to know, so I’m thrilled you’re being formally introduced today! — Emily

Happy Friday, y’all! I’m so thrilled you’ve stopped by to learn a little about little ol’ me! Just a bit about what I do here at Southern Weddings before we jump right in: I’m our Editor in Chief’s right hand gal, so Lara and I spend a lot of time together. I’m also your go-to-girl for anything style or fashion related, and probably the loudest mouth here at SW. Let’s get started!

1. I am obsessed with trial size anything. No joke, y’all! I am sort of (completely) a product junkie. Trial size cosmetics, hair products and just about anything tiny and cute makes me really happy. You know that aisle in the pharmacy meant for traveling? Yep, I could spend hours there. I’ve even bought products I don’t need in order to get the free samples of cosmetics.

2. I monogram EVERYTHING! I contribute this to having MNA as my maiden initials. My formal monogram was mAn. Not so cute! Now that I’m mKn, forget it! If it stops moving, I’ll monogram it!

3. I had a hole in my wedding dress! Yep, you heard me – a hole in my wedding dress! Right in the center of the stomach of my dress there was a hole in the lace straight though. Luckily, our photographer showed me that it didn’t appear in photos and the problem was solved. Thanks for saving my sanity, SK!

4. Scary movies give me the hives. I simply cannot watch them. I am the biggest scaredy cat you’ll ever meet when it comes to horror films. I probably saw no more than five minutes of the last scary movie I was dragged to, and those five minutes were spent peaking through my fingers. In my defense, my husband and his 6 foot 8 inch friend were both covering their faces with their hoodies!

5. Roll Tide is an everyday saying in our home. You’ve probably seen me say it on Twitter, here on the blog and just about everywhere else. As you know, college football is life in the South, and Alabama football, well, it’s just that much better! When my family moved to Alabama (I’m a military brat) our neighbor told my Mom to pick a side: “Are you Alabama or Auburn?” Needless to say we are Alabama, and always will be. Good thing I’m a Bama fan, otherwise my in laws might not have approved.

6. I have packed up an entire apartment in three hours. A quite lovely apartment, at that. As you might know, my husband (the handsome BDK) is a minor league baseball player, and with that comes a lot of traveling. One day, we got the call, and he had to be with the new team quite quickly. So, as he ran to the field to get his baseball gear, I packed up our entire apartment in only three hours (and into a Jetta, y’all)!

7. My favorite channels to watch are QVC and the Home Shopping Network, but I have never ever bought anything from either one. Seriously, y’all, I could lose hours of my life watching the Gem Show without ever thinking about purchasing one of the items.

8. I just cut 11 inches of my hair off to be donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths in honor of a family friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer. So did my sister and the fab Nicole.

9. I’ve been to approximately one hundred and fifty baseball games, but I still don’t understand all the rules of baseball. I once thought the shortest player on the team always had to play shortstop (for you non-baseball fans out there, this is not true). However, I can tell you the difference between a slider, a curve ball and a splitty.

10. In ten years, I want to be living in an antebellum style home (preferably below the Mason Dixon) with my sweet BDK and a couple yummy little children (with BDK’s dimples) running around. We’d vacation at our beach house on Rosemary Beach and I’ll still be working with the fab ladies of Southern Weddings and you wonderful readers.

I’m sort of a military brat! My dad was in the AF for almost 23 years, but had moved from active duty to the reserves before I was born. So I got a lot of the benefits without ever having to move around! Donated my hair to Locks of Love a couple of time, but I’m back to long tresses for the time being. We need a picture of your shorter ‘do!

    • avatar Marissa reply

Wow, 23 years in the AF! Go Lydia’s dad! And so awesome you donated to Locks of Love – very generous of you! xo, Marissa

  4. avatar Kathy reply

I love antebellum homes, too! In fact, the older and more historic the house, the better I like it. Good luck with your goals. I’m sure you’ll reach them!

  5. avatar Esther reply

I’ve donated my hair twice now to Locks of Love; working on the third but my hair seems to enjoy growing painfully slow! Regardless, it’s a wonderful cause and I applaud all three of you for making such a generous donation! Besides, it’s the perfect time for a cute new cut in this sweltering summer heat :)

    • avatar Marissa reply

Thanks, Esther! The best thing I have found to help hair grow is the vitamin Biotin. It also works wonders on your eyelashes and nails! xo, Marissa

I hate scary movies, too! And FYI, I’ve heard the best trial size aisle is located in Beth, Bath, & Beyond :)

Marissa, you are the sugar to my tea. The jam to my biscuit. The Jimmy Dean sausage to my Coon Balls. (y’all, we’ll explain that one soon!) But, seriously, I don’t know what I’d do without you. You bless my life in SO many ways! I love you!

Love Southern wedding traditions and want to include them in your wedding? We wrote our e-book just for you!

As you know, we Southerners have some very specific traditions when it comes to weddings. I’ll admit, some of them make absolutely no sense! Like Nicole’s favorite: “dancing in the wash tub”! (If anyone knows anything about this, please send me an email — I’m desperately curious!). So, over the next few months, we’re going to give y’all a little history lesson in Southern wedding traditions. First up: the groom’s cake!

Image credit: Sara Kauss. P.S. This is my husband’s groom’s cake from our wedding!

Originally meant as a gift from the bride to the groom, these delicious treats have had quite the transformation throughout the years. Traditionally dark chocolate-flavored and often containing fruit and liqueur, today’s groom’s cakes are a reflection of the groom’s personality and hobbies. Long gone are the days of the armadillo in the carport; these cakes now (literally) take many shapes, from the seal of his alma mater to his favorite video game console. Some brides and grooms even opt for a non-cake groom’s cake, choosing instead to serve his favorite treat (we’ve seen everything from banana pudding to Krispy Kremes!).

One last quirk of the groom’s cake? Originally, these cakes were not even meant to be served to the guests at the wedding, but rather given as favors. Rumor has it that if a single woman put a piece of groom’s cake under her pillow, she would dream of her future husband! Crazy, right?!

What is your favorite Southern tradition? Will you have/or did you have a groom’s cake at your wedding? Leave a comment below or send me an email.

I’m sending this post to my Ohio-native boyfriend, who had no idea what a grooms cake was when I told him about it! I will definitely have one when I get married, and I have a really good idea for it…but I’m not posting it here since I’m sending him this link ;)

I love the tradition of the groom having his father as the best man. I think it is such a sweet, sentimental gesture. My husband asked his father to be his best man, and he really was the perfect one for the role.

    • avatar Marissa reply

Hi Noelle, I love the tradition of his father being his best man! My FIL was my husband’s best man at our wedding as well! Just such a sweet tradition. xo, Marissa

We had a grooms cake at our wedding. It was a complete surprise to my Groom : ) A friend who is an up and coming specialty cake maker designed a Nascar cake. It was to die for! It was a race track featuring a few race cars, particularly Dale Jr., my husbands favorite. The cake was rectangle with the oval track centered, it displayed stands with tiny little nonpareil’s to represent the fans, and best of all it was mostly cheesecake. My husband LOVES cheesecake! I wanted to make sure that my husband new our wedding was about the two of us and not just the bride. That theme truly showed throughout our entire wedding.

    • avatar Marissa reply

Hi Amanda! Wow, that sounds like quite the display! I’m sure your hubby was so thrilled to know how much thought you put into that surprise. My husband also had a cheesecake groom’s cake (he hates regular cake)! Thanks for sharing! xo, Marissa

I’m SO happy you wrote about this! I’ve been so curious about groom’s cakes and debating on whether I want to get my man one or not for so long! A girlfriend of mine just got engaged, too, and we were thinking just over the weekend “Do we get our guys one? Do we not? What would it be?”–it’s great to get a little history for them so we can REALLY make a decision! PS I LOVE that your groom’s cake was the Alabama symbol; my Stephen ADORES Alabama, even though he didn’t go there, and rocks their clothes/hats pretty much whenever he can! Might have to steal that idea ;)

    • avatar Marissa reply

Thanks, Erin! I personally think that a lot of treats could work as a “groom’s cake”, but I do agree that buffalo wings might get a BIT messy! Feel free to steal the Alabama theme – spread the love! Roll Tide, my friend!

  6. avatar Erin reply

PS I also thought about going the non-cake route and getting Stephen a “groom’s cake” made out of a tower of hot wings from Buffalo Wild Wings, but I’m not sure if I like the idea of Buffalo sauce ANYWHERE near our nice clothes :-P

  7. avatar Danielle reply

I love this Southern traditions portion! My fiance and I are getting married in October and when I first told him about the groom’s cake he had no idea what I was talking about! He is definitely not a sweets guy…he would rather have wings over chocolate any day. His one and only sweet craving is donuts; so, I want to surprise him with all different kinds of donuts as his “groom’s cake.” Do you typically do the groom’s cake or sweet at the rehearsal dinner or the actual wedding? Or does it matter? I am hoping he will love the surprise!

    • avatar Marissa reply

Hi Danielle, I’m so glad y’all are considering a groom’s cake! I think they are such a fun way to incorporate the groom’s personality into the wedding. And I think your beau would LOVE a donut tower! Check out how this couple did it here. In the past the groom’s cake was served at the rehearsal dinner, but now it can be served whenever you would like. Who doesn’t love an extra sweet treat? xo, Marissa

  8. avatar Desiree reply

Marissa…I had to comment only to salvage some SEC respect. I too, surprised my husband with a grooms cake (we served it at our rehearsal dinner). It was a circular cake (like yours) with ARGYLE print on the sides and a giant, amazing, beautiful ORANGE AND BLUE Gator emblem on the top!! He loved it and was completely surprised. The argyle was inspiration from the socks he was planning on wearing to the wedding the next day. He at the cake while sporting his blue seersucker suit and an orange and blue tie ;o)

    go. gators.

    hahahaha

    • avatar Marissa reply

Oh, Desiree! My poor and misinformed friend! Orange and blue?! Boo! ; ) Just kidding – I’m sure Eric loved the cake!! xo, Marissa P.S. We LOVE having you in the Southern Weddings family!

First of all, Roll Tide! Loved your groom’s cake! My boyfriend is a Tar Heel through and through so I’m planning on getting a cake from Sugarland that is decorated to look like the UNC basketball court. We’re going to serve it at the rehearsal dinner the night before instead of at the actual wedding reception. One of my research papers I had to write for my anthropology degree was about American wedding traditions (I had to narrow it down to American Christian traditions because I was only limited to 30 pages which I easily filled). I’m a huge fan of any tradition whether it be a cultural, religious, or personal family tradition. Some of my favorites include the Scottish honeymoon period of one month (because most marriages were between people from fighting clans and the new couple had to run and hide for awhile) and when brides incorporate pieces of their mothers’ and grandmothers’ dresses into their own.

    • avatar Marissa reply

Hi Lauren! We simply adore Sugarland! We nibbled on their yummy cupcakes at our recent SW Yard Sale! The cake for your beau sounds divine – I’m sure he will love it! And that paper sounds very fun! I’m sure you rocked it! Roll Tide indeed! xo, Marissa

[…] 13 Jul I have a very “sweet” post for you today – cake!  Perhaps you read my previous posts on our wedding cake inspiration (if not, you can feast your eyes here, here, and here).  This week, it’s time to think about the flavor and look of the groom’s cake!  For all you non-southerners out there, this is traditionally a one-layer chocolate or fruit cake of some kind.  It provides contrast from the traditional “white” wedding cake and usually reflects the personality of the groom/couple.  As such, these cakes come in all forms: football stadiums, electric guitars, soccer balls, you name it.  On the more traditional side, you often see a simple chocolate cake (with chocolate frosting) and perhaps the couple’s monogram.  For a little more history, read the SW post from yesterday… […]

Oooh ooh! I still can’t fathom people not knowing about grooms’ cakes! For our wedding, Drew has insisted that my Father make his legendary cheesecakes (atop my mother’s Fostoria cake stands!). Ranging in flavors from white chocolate raspberry to pineapple, they give Cheesecake Factory a run for its money. :) I’m excited that my parents can be even more a part of our special day!
