Monthly Archives: August 2010

We are in the homestretch with V3, y’all!  One week till I jet off to Florida with this puppy (well, it’s more like a tall gorgeous great dane at this point!).  V3 is almost done and we are getting a little… um… BUSY!  So, in lieu of your normal Wednesday morning wedding inspiration, we just wanted to take a minute and say thank you.

Thank you to everyone who is cheering us on in the last days of design madness.  This issue is a labor of love and we are so grateful for every image, thought and inspiration that is gracing V3’s pages.  Thanks for making our lives fun amidst all this busy busy business!

xo

Lara, Katharine and Emily!

P.S. we have a camera crew in here today taping this craziness.  No, it’s not for reality TV.  We’ll be giving you a bunch of behind the scenes looks on our new site that is set to debut with V3!  Very exciting!  OK, time to go change out of my PJ’s…

Contest : Maihar Designs

by in Contests on

The fact that Maihar Designs is run by two Texas-born sisters sold me. I’ve always wanted a sister. Specifically, I’ve always wanted to start a business with this imaginary sister. When I was nine, I tried to get my little brother on board, but for some reason he refused to join in on my scheme to create a lipgloss empire. Maybe it was because the ‘homemade lipgloss’ recipe involved large amounts of Crisco.

Melanie Ford and Ashleigh Davis of Maihar Designs have accomplished what I could never do: a perfectly orchestrated sister-run business! They’ve created an absolutely stunning line of ring bearer pillows, flower wands, and hair petals that I’m just dying to get my hands on.

Win: Three extremely lucky readers will each get a gift certificate valued at $120 to spend at the Maihar Designs website! Would you judge me if I entered the giveaway too?

To Enter: We love business savvy readers! Do you have a small business? Do you have dreams of starting one? Share a business idea that you’ve had with us by posting a comment for a chance to win! Hopefully your business ideas don’t involve Crisco.

This contest will end on August 30th at midnight. I’d enter immediately if I were you.

When we were all younger, my little brother, older cousin and I all used to talk about opening our own business together. We would call it 3D Designs (because all 3 of our last names started with a D). We would offer our customers the complete experience from initial consult to decorating their dream home/office/business/etc once it had been designed and built. Unfortunately, our tastes and life dreams have changed a little bit since then, but my brother and I still talk about opening up a business together. If it was me, it would be a monogram shop and my brother would open up a french restaurant…so hopefully, one day…we'll think of a compromise and it'll happen!

I have a small photography business called E Squared Studios, run by me (an Elizabeth) and my bff Erica (get it? E Squared?). One of our marketing ideas was when we took photos of us biting into peep hearts and making annoyed faces at mushy stuff and sent out anti-Valentine's Day cards with a coupon for portraits. It was super fun to do and we got some fun responses :)

I''ve always wanted to open up an Asian inspired cupcake shop! With the cupcake craze nowadays, and being asian, I thought what better than to mix the two flavors!

Actually, my "small business" involves Crisco quite often :) A couple of years ago I baked and decorated a cake for a friend's birthday and posted the picture on Facebook. I got so many comments that it make me want to do more cakes. And so I did. I started researching techniques, went to classes, bought books, and sought professional advice. Now two years later, I have multiple cake orders every weekend. I'm a nurse and love my job, but secretly dream about going to culinary school and opening a legit bakery one day :)

I've always had the idea of starting up my own travel agency. I love planning my own vacations, so I know it would be an enjoyable to do that for other people! I would want to help people find alternative and truly authentic vacations. I would ask questions about why the person is wanting a vacation and tailor the trips to create the true experience they need based on what they say they want.

Besides my husband, my pups are the light of my life. Their "stuff" can get very expensive though so I started using my sewing skills to craft them new collars and such. I got to thinking one day if this stuff is expensive for me it must be expensive for others too and what can I do about it? I am just getting my underway selling affordable and fashionable dog accessories. Currently I am building up my stock of collars but hope to expand to leashes, toys, hair bows, beds, etc. very soon!

My fiance and I are huge foodies. Just about every restaurant we go to (including greasy fast food joints), I tell him "We should see how much it would cost to start our own!" This includes my desire to start a Japanese Hibachi restaurant even though I don't know the first thing about cooking over an open flame or tossing food in the air, but it sure is delicious :)

I would love to open my own paperie :) It would be so fun to hand select the most beautiful letterpress invitations and the most creative cards to feature in my store. And not to mention getting to find cute little stamps and stationery sets. (cue dream music and blurry effects as I begin to daydream) :)

I have entertained the idea of opening my own practice for speech therapy. It would be geared towards kids with Autism and Downs Syndrome and there would be all types of therapy. Speech, physical, occupational, art, music, horses. Anything that could cater to the kids as individuals. Its a far off dream, but maybe one day.

First of all, wow. Those sisters really know what they are doing! Absolute fabity-fabness. While my full time job is being a college senior, my part time job is being a sales associate/decorator/manager/marketer at a most wonderful little gift shop where I have worked for 4 years, this fall. There have been days when I have definitely felt as if I would love to own a small business similar to the one I frequently manage. I love selling beautiful things, building thoughtful relationships with customers, and setting up cute, eye catching displays. I’ve recently been dreaming about opening a bakery+boutique. The items would end up leaving the store smelling like a vanilla cupcake or blueberry muffin! Yum.

I am in the process of starting a baby quilt (and accessories) business. I have been making baby quilts as gifts for all my pregnant friends for a couple years now and I really think custom quilts would be a hit for new moms and as gifts for new babies! I will let you know when it is up and running!

  17. avatar Brit in Spain reply

When living in my hometown London, I would dream of starting a breakfast catering business! It would have been cheekily called "Morning Glory". The idea was a home delivery service of The Full English (or anything that takes your morning fancy!) You call up on the morning after the night before and Id arrive on my vespa with your grub, perhaps the morning paper and maybe even an aspirin. All those things that nobody really wants to get up to buy on a lazy Sunday morning. I went as far as investigating ways to keep eggs warm and talking to local city farmers for deals on sausages! However, I then fell in love with my Spaniard and upped and came to Spain where I am now planning my wedding for 2011 and loving my life as a teacher.

What an inspiration! I love all of the up and coming companies that have been able to form due to Etsy! As for me I love cooking. My grandmother had me helping out in the kitchen from a small child and I definitely have her sweet tooth. When she died I was given her recipe box. Little by little I have been making each one and let me tell you they are FABulous. I have a dream of opening a catering business with them. Something small and not too stressful but that fulfills my life passion of making delicious food for people and having them say "This is the best _____ I have EVER had!".

My fiance and I dream of opening our own Brew Pub Restaurant with a B&B and event space available. My fiance would brew our own beer and run the restaurant and I would manage the B&B and host Weddings* and other events. And, this would all happen in the mountains of Colorado. I am determined that this can become a reality one day.

Well, first off, I am a geologist. Part of getting your degree in geology requires you to do field camp training for a summer to learn how to map in the field. Of course, my field camp was in the desert southwestern US–it was dirty, incredibly hard work, but most of all, it was just incredibly hot. One particularly oven-like day in June in west Texas, my two field buddies and I decided that once we had our geology degrees, we would open a place in the desert that sold ice cream during the day, and beer at night, because really, that would have made our lives about one billion times better. We decided that we would have geology-themed ice cream names ("Picritic basalt" would be very dark chocolate ice cream with pistachios–that kind of thing), and tasty drinks at night. And we would call it "On the Rocks." Because we're geologists. When you are partially dehydrated and working like crazy in the desert, these are the kinds of ideas that you find hysterically funny and entirely plausible–at the time, at least. :-)

My dream is to open a non-profit beach house for brain tumor patients. I lost my mother to brain cancer and since she loved the beach and in her memory, one day I hope to offer all brain tumor patients and loved ones the experience of "Marcia’s Isle – a Rehoboth Beach Retreat" that offers tranquility, hope, and healing at no expense to the families. A brain tumor and subsequent treatment can change a person’s appearance and their ability to carry out a full active day. During this time patients and caregivers alike need to pamper themselves and I would love to give them the chance to do so. There are times when we just don’t feel like ourselves, or even like human beings. During those times, we need to believe in miracles. And sometimes we need to make miracles happen. I hope to take the first step by allowing the beach of "Marcia’s Isle" to wash away the pain and exhaustion from the battle against brain tumors. It would mean so much to me to give those diagnosed and their loved ones a chance to get back to the joy, laughter, and wonderment of life…even if it is just for a week.

I work as an advocate for families with disabled children. Many of their children battle obesity and nutritional problems in addition to their disabling conditions. I have yet tofind anyone in the fitness industry focused on the special needs community. It would be wonderful to start a gym/recreational center that meets the behavioral, emotional, social, cognitive, and physical needs of the disabled population. It is an untapped marked that would greatly benefit from some specialized attention.

I'm writing business plans to start my own bikini company opening the same month as my wedding (May 2011)!!! We'll buy from small, unknown, up-and-coming swim designers that aren't in every store so there's no chance of seeing someone in the same suit. I plan to use some of the decor and fabrics we are purchasing for the wedding in the store. And since I'm opening it in the same town where my sister lives, she's definitely in on the planning for it too :)Now if I could only quit my addiction to wedding blogs…. (I need to get back to the business plan!)

What a fun contest! I could post thousands! Unfortunately, I can't find the time for any of the three I have started! But, one thing I've always wanted to add to my services is a super-behind-the-scenes videography service. (shot HD with a DSLR) I'd have a team of two shooting and editing the footage on the spot. With a fast disc writer and pre-printed labels and packaging we could send guests home with a dvd of the day – nothing too cheesy or long – maybe a 5 minute video set to music that matched the bride and groom! Some day!

My cousin Jena and I used to come up with business ideas all of the time, generally stemming from her love of babies and mine of clothing, so what else but a baby boutique! As I grew up, my dreams got a little bit bigger and these days I'm on the prowl with my friend Jessica to open a knick knack store of fabulous for women of all ages. We are looking at lilly pulitzer on the walls combined with floral headbands, ruffle dresses and of course satin shoes! Bohemian Prepster! One day!

I have always loved loved loved planning, and by planning I mean planning ANYTHING. My parents always made fun of me in high school because I was so organized and had my entire life amazingly choreographed from academics, clubs, multiple sports and a busy social life. After I graduated from college NASA actually paid me to plan Shuttle missions in Mission Control. What a dream! I couldn’t believe our nation’s manned spaceflight program was paying me to do something that I loved to do and came so naturally to me. However, as I’ve traveled down the path of life, my hopes and dreams have changed (mainly a result of my daughter’s arrival). I tried to go back to work after she was born, but it was painful to be away from her so much. That’s when I decided it was best for our family if I stayed home. Of course, I still had an incurable desire to plan…. So to keep from driving my husband totally nuts I partnered with my good friend in a wedding planning business and Polished Wedding Planning LLC was born!

I have to enter for my mother who has started a family business up again. My late grandmother, her mother had a catering business; Copper Pots and Polka Dots that my mother is now the owner of. Being that my mother inherited the amazing cooking and baking abilities from her mother, that I dad not, she decided to start the business back up after nearly 10 years. I love being crafty so it is my job to decorate, but all of the credit goes to her. Without her AMAZING southern cooking and baking abilities this small business wouldn't be able to grow like it is. We are a great team, but I am so proud of my mom in carrying out her dream of following in her mothers footsteps and following her nose after all of these years.

I would open a restaurant like many others. I would want it to be "Pop's Kitchen" (that is what I call my dad). We would serve just good home country cooking. The chicken fried steak, mac & cheese and okra would be our specialties. We would ALWAYS be looking for suggestions for new items on the menu. We would always try out those suggestions and see how they went. My two favorite parts of my restaurant would be 1. All the sweet tea you can drink AND 2. Everybody would get a free piece of pecan pie with their meal! Someday!

Couture!!! That's my gig. :) My amazing talented mother taught me how to sew when I was quite young, but let me take it from there by myself, (but was sure to leave plenty of books around about new techniques!) As I was home schooled, my mother was able to observe and, I guess you could say enable my passion for beautiful, stylish, and impeccably constructed garments. I was given every opportunity to learn and grow and develop my technique and style, so that by the time I was ready to look for a college, I had already mastered everything that a fashion school could have taught me. So now I'm doing custom wedding dresses, until I finish my {history} degree, and can finally pursue designing and producing my own line of truly unique, romantic and sophisticated gowns. I totally love the whole sister act; my kid sister is a *fabulous* jewelry designer, and works with some of my brides, designing unique and lovely pieces just for them! Way to go, girls!

My dream business to open up is a couture wedding dress store. We don't have a lot here in San Diego and the closest one to is an hour drive away from here. I love weddings in general but omg the dresses are my favorite! Well except for marring the groom ;]

It was a dream that was made into a reality with the love and support from my friends and family this year!

I have very fond and vivid memories of going to the barbershop when I was younger. I was never too much worried about the wait, because it was always such an amazing experience. This gathering on an early Saturday morning would involve discussion of current topics, the latest sports news, jokes being told… it was the perfect scene. My dream endeavor would be to open an upscale barbershop in which more young men could enjoy this positive atmosphere, witnessing the men in their communities in a great light, but also where the adults could get additional services other than a haircut; such as dry cleaning, grooming (manicures & pedicures), health and wellness instruction, and few other things. I would love the opportunity to one day take this on.

I started a small photography business when I was 18 years old. Trying to juggle it between school and other life has been difficult, but love it! I dream that one day it will be very successful and that I would be able to raise my family and have the business as well.

If you know me, a word you could use to describe me is crafty. I have several things that allow me to say "I Made It" when people ask where I got it from. My sister, being the interior designer that she is, also has a crafty side to her. It is our Big Girl Dream to open up a shop called The Nest, selling gifts for the home and other little trinkets that we have put our hands into. My favorite thing I have made so far are peacock feather napkin rings as a house warming gift…so I would definitely expand on my napkin ring making for the shop.

    • My mother is a retired florist and I remember growing up in our kitchen turned flower shop! I would come home from school and our house would look and smell beautiful from all the fresh flowers everywhere. I would sit right next to my mom with my own bunch of flowers and vase (mostly left over flowers or cheap ones) and I would mimic my mother constantly smiling each other. Looking back, I cherish those memories and time spent side by side doing arrangements and delivering them to the wedding venues and being in awe of how gorgeous everything was. I am now the proud mother to a bubbly 9 month old baby girl, Emma and I realize what motherly love is about. I started thinking about talents, hobbies or interests that I could someday share with Emma and nothing really came to mind. That is until one day when I started making my own headbands and bows for Emma. Being from Austin, TX our fun little city is all about local shops and boutiques, so this works in my favor. I would love to someday be able to quit my current job and be a stay at home mother with my own headband and accessories line. My idea is to use stones, glass beads, feathers, flowers and other fun pieces to create unique headbands for girls and women to wear. Once Emma is old enough, I would love to have her by my side working on her own headbands and even have her girlfriends come create their own and use their imagination. This would be important because the headbands that the girls would make, I would donate the proceeds to the St. Jude Foundation. I just feel that being able to give back to benefit other children is the least I can do since I feel truly blessed every day I see my bright eyed, healthy baby girl that I have been blessed with. As Emma got older, I would hope that she would keep this possible business running and feel good about being able to donate proceeds to such a worthy foundation.

I'm a singer, so it would be fabulous to feature local musicians during the week… acoustic sessions.

It makes me smile to see the bridesmaids actually really love them! It is something personal from the bride though, because they have helped put there special touch on the jewelry pieces~

I would love to start either a bed and breakfast in New Orleans or a small DIY- crafting store. The idea being it would be a place where women in major cities (ie NYC) could go to do DIY crafts. Since most people don't have time/space/money to do all the crafts they want to do, it would be a place with sewing machines, hot glue guns, and other DIY crafter tools for rent. I think it would be a great space to be creative and get in touch with my inner art teacher! Thanks for the great giveaway!

I am currently trying to start my own business. I've loved crafts since I was a little kid living in TN on our farm. I got engaged on Christmas Eve of 2010. I knew I wanted something unusual and then decided….COTTON! So I started making these wreaths, bouquets, and boutonnieres out of cotton and other dried prairie grasses. Now it just comes down to getting my business up and going! Trying to do this AND plan a wedding is stressful but I absolutely love it! Life is so much sweeter in the South. This is the shop I opened up on Etsy trying to start my business.http://www.etsy.com/shop/LeRoys

You bet there’s a part two to this post!  We wanted to give you another peek at how a celebrity couple celebrates their engagement (Southern style, of course), starting with the wild, rustic décor.  Caprice Palmer at the Enchanted Florist styled the gorgeous blooms, and we’re dying to taste the bite-sized treats from Shannon Bates at Chef’s MarketNashville Event Lighting set the mood for the tented event, and Nashville Party Authority supplied music and karaoke for the musically-inclined love birds and their guests.  Visit Kristyn Hogan’s blog for more sweet shots of Miranda + Blake!

Of all the wedding gifts you and Blake and received, what’s been your favorite? Our favorite presents were matching flasks and matching shotguns.  We were outside the city limits, so we went right out of the tent and tried them out.  It’s a real shotgun wedding!

Have you made any plans for your upcoming wedding? We’re so busy, so I’m leaving it to the wedding planner.  But any time I have an idea or see something I like, I cut it out or print it out and put it in a folder.  I have a folder, and my mom has one too.
