Monthly Archives: May 2010

OK, I may have skipped a month on this feature.  I promise the imagery you are about to drink in will make up for it.  Congrats to the last feature‘s top voter’s pick, Fer Juaristi.

VOTE for your favorite photograph by leaving a comment here and (combining our office votes with yours) we’ll award the top image of the month.  All of those images will then be in the running for Image of the Year at the end of 2010.  The best part?  If your image makes the cut, there’s a strong possibility it will make our print edition (of course, with the photographer’s permission).

Fred Egan has, as of late, been rocking the fashion world.  So, it comes as no surprise that this gem of a photograph would haunt me… taunting me to forgo my Target shopping ways and become a Vuitton convert.  OK, maybe not now.  If I win the shoe lottery.

My dream dress used to be this Vera that I just couldn’t help myself from trying on pre-shoot in Vegas.  Well, that all changed when I laid eyes on this Romona Keveza frock photographed by InContrast.  Oh. My. Hold me back or Ari and I will be renewing our vows.  Again.  Gorgeous bridals.

Oh, Fer.  Yes, I put you in here again.  Confession: I have a whole folder of your images on my desktop.  I just can’t help myself with these.  Hello, doesn’t this just take your breath away?  What a moment!  … and captured so artfully.

I am not a shoe person, I swear. I am a Walmart/Target shopper through and through, but these Badgley Mischka’s shot by Vero Suh via Style Me Pretty are making me blush, they are so beautiful! Oh goodness.  Hide my AMEX.  Stacking these lovelies on prose just makes them all-the-more romantic.  They are whispering sweet nothings to me…

These guys still reign as my favorite Southern gentlemen.  Just like everything else the A Bryan guys do, this Miami wedding shot by Caleb at A Bryan Photo is top notch.  This frame is just the beginning.  You have to see the bride and her to-die-for bouquet.

Y’all know I love to travel.  This engagement shoot from Luna Photo is right up my alley… or aisle, I should say.  Pass the peanuts, stewardess, these shots are first class all the way!

It’s a little warm here in the South as spring turns to Cat-on-a-HOT-Tin-Roof-summer.  This simple, sparkling, snowy ring shot from Stephanie at Ardent Photography is like a tall glass of cool ice tea.  (PS congrats to Stephanie on announcing her pregnancy this week!  So much to celebrate!)

1. This wedding kills me.  Like… if you were in the office when I first saw it… and you were a guy…  you’d roll your eyes at my girly, squealing, ohmyWOW!!! reaction.  2. The bride is Hollywood-starlet stunning.  Just drop dead gorgeous. This portrait could be a painting in the Louvre for all I know… look at her eyes!  3. Did, I mention this wedding kills me!?  Brava, Simply Bloom.  Way to nail every image.  See the entire wedding on Style Me Pretty.  Gorgeous feature.

OK, y’all know I am a relatively busy (ahem. understatement.) woman.  I rarely have time to stop and really read blog posts.  I scan for images.  I am very very fast at it now.  Well, this one I read.  I have chills thinking about the incredible story behind this photograph from Meghan McSweeney.  It really does take on an entirely different weight.  View the rest of the wedding images here.

No lie, I saw this image, leapt up from my desk and all I could do was jump up and down and say YES! YES! YES! and laugh hysterically.  Ahahahahahaha! This is pure wedding WIN.  High fives, F8.

I spent the better part of this month in Hawaii.  Mmmmm just saying that sentence makes me very happy… and wish I could go back.  I did several consults with some amazing photographers while I was there, including Marina Miller.  I don’t usually like trash the dress, water on my dress, couple in the water, bride on fire or anything of the sort, but this image works.  Her dress looks like it’s floating and this moment looks perfectly calm and blissful.  Who wouldn’t want to paddle out into the azure waters with their love and steal away a kiss? (hand raised)  How escapist-romantic of me.

Side note: you have to see this other wedding of hers! You will thank me.

Thank you Jeremy Gilliam for nominating this epic image from Jason Huang.  Wait for it…. wait for it….

I must be thirsty.  Or just in love with mint.  Or Susan Stripling makes even the simplest details look epic.  Yes, the latter.  I love these frames together. Crisp, clean, perfectly modern Charleston.  Admittedly, I am rather drawn to the greens and blues in these shots.  We may have just done a spectacular shoot with Jose Villa and Joy Thigpen here in North Carolina using said greens and blues.  It was lovely.  Sneak peek here.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall during this moment!  Just a brilliant photograph.  What do you think they are laughing about?  Go vote for this image from Next Exit Photography while you think on that.

I am a Smilebooth fan through and through.  Max and Margaux got married last weekend.  Max is good friends with my good friends, Whit and Jesse.  Margaux grew up with my cousin Ali in Laguna Beach.  Too small of a world.  I was so happy to finally meet them both at WPPI in 2009.  Gorgeous, talented, lovely couple.  Congrats M + M!  And the SW ladies are very excited to have Ashley bringing us a custom Smilebooth to play in this weekend!  Woooo!

Jeff Newsom is the Southerntron of Awesomeness.  Yeah, I made that one up.  I tried, Jeff, I tried.  This entire post is jaw-dropping. UNREAL.

Mamiya C330. Perfection. This photograph from Kitty Clark Fitz leaves me speechless.  OK ok, I have to say that I want this on my wall.  There are few images I know I would love forever.  This one wins.  Timeless.

Yes, it’s a mint-adorned drink again.  (Note to self: quench this craving stat for risk of future minty-drink-laden blog posts.)  This image needs no introduction.  I’d like a cold one right now.  Cold one as in… crisp, cold, brilliantly photographed mint julep from Tracey Turpen.

Congrats to this month’s IT LIST picks and thank you for inspiring me!

Have an image you’d like to submit?  Here are the rules:

Which one is your favorite?

I am recently engaged and we went with a nontraditional ring. We used the band (diamonds and platinum) that my great grandmother then grandmother wore and added a center stone – a lovely green sapphire (yes – sapphires come in every color imaginable! I had no idea until we started the ring process) set in a bevel setting. I’ll email you pic because I"m just so in love with it! :) We have gotten so many props for going the nondiamond route! I just love it!

  2. avatar J G reply

Yep, I bought my fiancee a lab-created sapphire. It’s a lighter blue color, and generally fits her more simple but colorful style. I had been thinking about a round cut but decided in the end to go with the more rectangular cut because with a colored stone we think it just looks better and really shows off the lab-created clarity! I also went about 1/3 carat larger than I would have in a diamond (she didn’t want anything too crazy), again to offset (IMO) the colored stone.

  3. avatar Lys reply

I’ve only got an engagement ring for now, but my fiance went out of the way to get it as non-traditional as possible. I have a simple white gold band with two yellow pearls sitting right on the top. I don’t have any affinity towards jewelry in general, but I have a long string of pearls my great aunt bought for me some years ago and I absolutely love them, so I’m pretty sure he got his inspiration from that. I love the ring because of how personal it is and because I know he put a lot of time and effort into making it perfect for me.

My little brother would be my first choice. He is absolutely the most artistically talented person I have ever met. From the time he was old enough to start drawing through his high school art elective classes, he has excelled in any art form he’s attempted. Whether it’s picking up random musical instruments and teaching himself to play, to being a natural on a pottery wheel, he is just a gifted individual. And I love the Camera Renter idea – an impressive step up from disposable cameras on the table!

  2. avatar Natalie reply

My cousin would be the eye behind the camera. With her artistic sense of style and ability to capture hilarious, emotional, spontaneous moments, I know I could count on her to create a fantastic montage of pictures from our wedding :-)

  3. avatar Liz reply

My brother! He took our engagement photos. And while we don’t want him working our wedding, he would snap some great candid shots.

  4. avatar Emily L. reply

I’d pick my cousin. He used to be an amateur videographer and has an eye for quirky photography as well. His style would nicely compliment the more serious photographer that we’ve hired.

  5. avatar Sarah M reply

I would have this guy I went to school with take "artsy" pictures. No one is posed, centered, or even a full body in some cases. It’s about shadows and a more abstract approach.

  6. avatar Kate reply

My sister’s boyfriend takes fantastic pictures – I’m hoping he’s going to be taking some at my wedding with or without this package! It would be nice to have cameras for lots of people, though.

  7. avatar Sharon reply

I’m most looking forward to getting candid shots of me and my fiance having our first look. That’s something that stays with you forever. As for the ceremony, I’ll probably be rocking an ugly cry face :)

  8. avatar Kelsey Pauxtis reply

I truly can’t wait to have our first dance documented. We are dancing to You are the best thing by Ray Lamontagne and that moment is what I’ve been looking forward to this entire time my fiance has been deployed to Afghanistan.

  9. avatar LeeLa reply

I’m most looking forward to documenting the pre-wedding activities. The men getting ready and clowning around. The ladies with me at the spa, brunch, goofing off while being girly. These are moments that I think capture the true essence of our closest family and friends before the mayhem.

  10. avatar Lauren reply

The moment I am most looking forward to capturing on my wedding day is my groom’s face when I enter the church to walk down the aisle! The aisle of my church’s sanctuary is VERY long and with my bad eye sight and likely tear-filled eyes, I fear I will not be able to catch his response! I would love to give one of my front-row family members one of the digital cameras to sneak a shot!

  11. avatar christina reply

I think I am looking forward to seeing the pictures of my guests the most! The ones with my dad just enjoying himself dancing with my mom or the one when I tell Sean to ask my grandmother to dance and she can’t say no because its my wedding! Oh and the pictures of my friends who are loaners and will hang out by the bar the whole time. I don’t want to miss any of those moments while I’m talking to my crazy aunt about her deaf dog (and don’t get me wrong I love that dog!)

  12. avatar joey reply

Oh my gosh, this is the most awesome giveaway. Seriously, this engagement will only last one year or so but the memories of the wedding will last a lifetime. I am so excited to see the wedding in the eyes of my guests and to ensure that they had as much fun as possible!

  13. avatar Laura reply

I’m most excited about our "first look" shot. Just seeing my future husband dress in his kilt (Scotish Wedding) will be amazing. I also think having us walking behind the bagpiper as we’re walking out of the chapel will be a great picure as well.

  14. avatar Kelaine reply

One of our best family friends Maria – she would do a wonderful job!

  15. avatar N reply

I would love to have pictures of little moments at the wedding that I won’t see and that the photographer won’t necessarily capture. Relatives talking, old friends dancing, little kids being funny as they are wont to do, etc. Thanks for having this awesome giveaway!

  16. avatar Andrea reply

I am most looking forward to seeing everyone’s expression during the ceremony. Since I won’t be paying attention, it would be nice to have cameras around. We are definitely throwing some doosies in, since we are both physicists and enjoy science/math humor.

  17. avatar Janna reply

What a neat idea! I love getting the candid shots that our guests would take that the photographer might miss. Some of my cousin’s favorite shots from their wedding were taken by the guests- and I think the renting idea is neat! I also want pictures of my fiance as the church doors open- it’s a long aisle for my dad and I to walk down and I want his expression captured when he sees me!

  18. avatar Felicia reply

I’m most looking forward to having our ceremony documented. The mix of sweet emotions on my face and my love’s as I walk down the aisle towards him…

  19. avatar Chloe reply

Those little moments of us looking at each other throughout the night.

  20. avatar Whitney reply

The one moment I’m most excited to document… as cheezy as it sounds, is my future husband seeing the first glimpse of me walking down the isle with my dad. I am planning on having two photographers on my wedding day, so having one get my reaction and one of his reaction the first time we see each other will be absolutely priceless.

  21. avatar DD reply

What an amazing giveaway! There are so many different moments I want to capture from the wedding day- its hard to pick just one. After lots of thought, I think the moment I am most looking forward to is our first dance as husband & wife. We are getting married on the 4th of july weekend, so our guests are going to be holding sparklers while we dance. I have a feeling it is going to be one of my most favorite moments of the day <3

  22. avatar Ginger reply

Between my fiance and I we have 4 nephews aged 5, 3, and two 2 year olds!! I couldn’t pick one to be a ringbearer, so I am having them all!!! I am going to have the oldest nephew pull the others in a wagon with a sign on the back that says "Here comes the Bride". My family thinks that I’m crazy, but I’m so excited about it. The only thing that makes me mad is that I will not be able to see what goes on when they are coming down the aisle. I can’t wait to see the pictures! They are going to be so freaking adorable!!!I think the camera renter idea is wonderful!! There are so many candid memories that these could catch that the photographer may miss!

  23. avatar linda reel reply

i am actually mother of the bride. i have used disposable cameras in the past at weddings and it was fun to see different views of the weddings, i would love to see my daughter’s face as she says her vows to her husband as the girl always faces away from her parents in traditional church weddings!

  24. avatar Jess reply

I am most looking forward to walking down the aisle and seeing my groom for the first time. He already told me he might tear up a bit and I definitely want that moment preserved forever. It’s been a long four years full of long distance romance, traveling, and moving to foreign countries and I’m eager to document the culmination of it all and the beginning of a new chapter in our lives together.I think camera renter would be a perfect opportunity for this, and give us the ability to see the day through our guests eyes.

  25. avatar Erica Wiggins reply

I am looking forward to documenting the reception the most. I going for a very romantic setting and I think it will be a lot of fun to have all of my family and friends together sharing our first moments together as husband and wife. I want to be able to look back at that special time and say," So that’s what my mom was up to when I couldn’t find her! lol" I don’t want to miss a moment of that first night with everone I love near!

  26. avatar Krista B. reply

Wow there are so many to pick from. I can’t wait for shots of me and my 5 bridesmaids, they are my best friends and I have stood next to four of them on their wedding day! (I couldn’t ask all 10, since I have been a BM 10 times!) But I can’t wait to see his face when dad and I walk down the aisle, and we are having one heck of a band and one good group of friends and family, so all the get down dancing shots will be FANTASTIC!!!!!!!

  27. avatar Heather B reply

I would love to have lots of pictures of later in the night, and at the after party. Our photographers leave earlier in the night, so we would love to have plenty of pictures even after they leave!

The getting ready part. I’ll have my best friends and family all in one house. We are going to have so much fun, and I know I’ll be anxious like crazy! I want to document it all and share all those moments of anticipation with my future husband and laugh about the wonderful day for years to come.

Pictures create a glimpse into the day from different perspectives. While I am thrilled to have some excellent photographers on board, I am also looking forward to having guests help me see our day through their eyes. I’m all about little moments and having other people help me look back at my wedding day will only enhance the overall feeling of it all. I am hoping for some extra special candids during the reception as well as some sweet shots of my flower girl and two ring bearers.

First – what a great idea for capturing every moment at your wedding. AMAZING.Hmmm…so many moments to look forward to! But, I am really excited about dancing with my dad. We have narrowed it down to 2 songs, both by James Brown – "Ants in My Pants (and I need to Dance)" and "Get on the Good Foot". Should be entertaining, and I am sure we will have plenty of people joining in!

I can’t wait to capture our first dance. We will be doing a dance off battle since we both LOVE to dance. No one knows that we have choreographed our first dance so it will be a great surprise!

I can’t wait to get our first look captured. It is going to be the best moment, next to officially being pronounced man and wife, of the day to see her for the first time.

I most want to capture the dance moves and dance offs that will likely occur! I love to be a little ridiculous on the dance floor and so do my friends and family so this often leads to a dance off of the best of our worst dance moves. Amateur moves deserve an amateur photographer! Can’t wait for it!

This may sounds strange, but I’m very excited about documenting our departure. I already know I won’t have time to take it all in (and will probably be buzzed on champagne), but I want that shot of the two of us surrounded by our amazing family and friends as they send us off into our new life together. It will be one of those "OMG, we really did it!" moments and that’s definitely something I want the camera to capture. Click!

Hmm! I’m most looking forward to documenting us saying our vows! It’s probably the MOST important part of the wedding and I will want to look back and hear our promises to each other over and over from now until forever! When we have kids one day, I think it will be something special for them to see too!! Ahh! I can’t wait!

The moment I look forward to most is capturing the expression on my groom’s face when dad and I meet him at the altar.

My family is so important to me, that the best part of the day will be the little surprises thrown in that will incorporate all of them…from blending of both of our families, to sharing family recipes in a cookbook as favors, and honoring our loved ones who have passed (including his mother who passed away from breast cancer). We have decided to get married at a summer camp to make it more like a family reunion, and I can’t wait for the moment to come when we’re standing in front of the beautiful cross on the edge of the lake in front of our families and friends (and those looking down from above) and finally become husband and wife.

Normally for special events, Jason and I shop with one another and decide on the best outfits together. For our wedding, though, we want to keep one another surprised.I can’t wait to see pictures of us looking at each other for the first time, when I walk down the aisle. I can’t wait to see what he decided to wear and I hope he loves my dress as much as I do!

The moment I’m most looking forward to seeing is my Mom’s face. I’m the first of my siblings to get married, and I’m over 40! She’s waited a long, long time!

I am most looking forward to seeing my 2 year old daughter walk down the aisle ahead of me. The three of us becoming a family will be the shot I treasure the most. My daughter was adopted by me a year ago, while I was still single. In less than a year we are creating a family and that photo will be the most treasured.
