Vintage pastel: that’s what I’m calling Stacey + Chris’ sweet lovely color palette.  Pastel weddings are always lovely, but there’s something extra sweet about the soft blues, lilacs and tangerines the couple chose for their Alabama nuptials at the Union Grove Art GallerySimplyBloom Photography wows us again with their touching and heartfelt images… lovely!  And what do y’all think of the bride’s J. Crew frock?  She totally has my vote!

How did the two of you meet?  Tell us your story.  I had been living in Seattle for four years and enjoying the music scene and all the local markets before I decided to move home to Huntsville.  Once there, I began to get involved in local politics, which is where Chris and I met.  We met up for some Thai food, but little did I know that Chris was not a fan of Thai.  We talked over dinner while Chris pushed his food from side to side and I happily dug in. We finished the date with Pan’s Labyrinth and some redneck loudly yelping about the subtitles and strange language.  When we both started laughing I knew that this was going to be a good match.
Describe the proposal.  The proposal was more of a conversation on the couch just before Chris was leaving for Christmas break.  We were talking about what was in store when Chris finished school and before we knew it a bottle of wine was gone and we were on the phone to our families.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Chris says, “Super duper awesome!”
What was the design inspiration for your wedding? To be honest, I spent hours online.  I looked at countless blogs, pictures and craft pages. I looked at Etsy.com.  I also tried to think of things that felt warm and inviting.  I have always loved fall and knew that was when we were hoping to get married.  I created inspiration boards and took note of anything that inspired me while walking around or talking with people.  I had to remind myself that I only had time to craft so many projects and, at one point, there was even an intervention from my Mom and Chris.  They told me that no more ideas were allowed!!  Luckily I have many friends that are getting married so I am passing the ideas on.  I tell you: this stuff is addictive!
What was your favorite design element of your big day?  I loved the art gallery we got married in.  It ihasa beautiful one-room chapel from the 1800’s.  The art department at UAH restored it and now uses it for events and art exhibits.  It is the perfect blend of rustic and homey with great lighting.  The white steeple and all the beautiful trees around just made my heart flutter.  I would close my eyes and picture all the leaves changing and this perfect little building sitting waiting for us.  I really loved every bit of that place.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was:
Oh there were so many, but the best thing about the whole event was my family playing music together.  Both of my brothers are musicians and my sister-in-law sings like an angel.  I knew I wanted them to perform and, thankfully, they all agreed.  I still think about everyone eating dinner together with Mara’s and Wade’s voice floating through the air.  It meant so much to us.
Tell us about finding your
wedding dress: I was terrified of blowing my budget on a dress.  I really avoided typical wedding dress shops and looked at everything from vintage shops to everything online.  I settled on a creamy silk confection by J.Crew.  The cut was beautiful and it had the best details.  I was comfortable and felt like a really beautiful bride.

Check back soon for more of Stacey + Chris’ lovely Alabama wedding!

We’re back with another giveaway, ladies and gents, and this one’s a doozy!  As you all know, Katharine’s a major sugar addict (see her gift picks as evidence!).  Many generous vendors donated to this giveaway, resulting in a beyond-fabulous prize package for one lucky reader.

The package includes:

An assortment of cupcake liners from Bella Cupcake Couture.  We’re big fans of the Lulu in gold and the Hannah in citrus/pink, but any of their designs would look lovely on the cupcake table at a wedding.  Visit their website here and their blog here!

One set of 5 “Will you be my bridesmaid?” cookies from Flour Pot Cookies.  Katharine thinks this idea is absolutely genius, and I have to say, the rest of us agree.  I also love the uber-cute Christmas Lights gift box.  Visit their website here!

One $25 gift certificate to Bake it Pretty.  This way, you can choose between their polka-dot baking cups, their pretty pansy icing flowers, and their skinny tall candles (love!).  Good luck making a decision!  Visit their website here and their blog here.

–An assortment of treats from Hammond’s Candies, including 3 cherry lollis, 3 red apple lollis, and 3 packs of peppermint straws.  Hammond’s is famous for their carefully crafted, handmade candy, a favorite with editors because of its beautiful looks and a favorite of readers because, well, it’s ridiculously delicious!  Visit their website here.

–And last but not least, the prize package includes one 11″ custom cake stand from Clara French.  The winner will get to work with the owner to design a stand that matches perfectly with their wedding style.  If you haven’t seen her work, you MUST check it out immediately.  Her website is here!

Amazing, right?!  The value of this prize package is — wait for it — just under $500!  Insane!

Now, since this prize package is so spectacularly amazing, we’re going to make you work a bit for it!  To enter, visit two of the five sites above and leave a comment telling us your favorite product from each.  You must leave a comment on this post before midnight on Sunday, December 13.  We’ll pick a random winner next week!  Good luck!

P.S. Don’t forget to enter Lara’s and Emily’s giveaways, too!

I definitely have favorites! From Bake It Pretty, I love all the special loaf pans, especially the heart- and star-shaped baking molds. Banana bread would taste much more special in those shapes! Also, from Clara French’s collection, I love all of the cake stands, to be honest, but most of all I love the Flora stands. I have a "thing" for gorgeous cake stands, and I really wish I could afford one of hers!

  2. avatar kjb reply

Oh my gosh, to win a Clara French cake stand in addition to all of the lovely prizes would be divine! So many favorites, but the top two specifically for my wedding would be a. Clara French’s 17.5" Elle cake stand in white (GORGEOUS) and b. Bella Cupcake’s Olivia – Silver cupcake liners.

I had already visited all of these websites after I read Katharine’s original post of gift ideas, so this is easy for me! First off, I absolutely love the cake stands by Clara French, specifically the Elle cake stand. I have actually been searching desperately for a unique cake stand for my June wedding and was so happy to find this website! Secondly, I pretty much adore anything on the Hammond’s Candy website, but really fell in love with their lolli’s, especially the Sugar Plum flavor! We’ve been looking everywhere for some pretty, high quality lollipops for our candy buffet, and I think we may have found an option. Thanks for all of the great ideas!

There’s no way I could pick a favorite from Bella Cupcake Couture or Bake It Pretty, so I’ll have to say favorite number two is the all natural strawberry lollipops from Hammond’s Candies. Aren’t they adorable? And they sound delicious. You can’t go wrong with strawberry.

  29. avatar Jessica reply

  31. avatar Laura reply

I love the "winter friends" cookies from The Flour Pot – though they might be too cute to eat! I also adore the beaded bijoux cakestand from Clara French. All of them are fantastic, but that one just stands out to me for some reason.

I LOVE the Clara French Dessert plates! I registered for all Juliska plates in both cream and blue (to make it look more like we collected them over time). The dessert plates would be the perfect compliment to my juliska plates…is there a way to register on the site? I also loved the cake stands, I have this dream of having multiple cakes all in different flavors and heights at my wedding (too bad we have a budget, huh?)Can you image how spectacular an asssortment of cakes would all look on the various cake stand designs? Since I am a little later to marry than a lot of my friends, I am planning my wedding while they are planning their kids b-day parties! How excited was I to see th pirate party cupcake kit on the bake it pretty site. My best friends son is having his "pirate themed" b-day in 2 weeks….this is the perfect item to help me spruce up the cupcakes I was planning on bringing!

Bake It Pretty’s 7 deadly sin grinders would be so much fun at a bachelorette shower or wedding shower! They would be a great topping for sugar cookies. And just because I’m in LOVE with these vendors… The Flour Pot Cookies are simply swoon worthy. I’m As a Southerner who loves to entertain and is getting married in April, I wish there was a store with all of these beautiful things where I could register! I think Southern Weddings needs to have a “shopping” section where they can sell (and people can register) all of the wonderful things they feature; to die for cake stands (my fav is the beaded bijoux), polka dot cupcake liners in hot pink (I mean, who doesn’t love polka dots?) and delicious treats for party favors (I could eat the Mitchell Sweets all day!). For now, I guess marking all of these sites in my Internet Favorites will have to do!

  60. avatar Amanda Hughes reply

I have been drooling over Clara French’s super lovely cake stands for ages, and I am just smitten with the Elle stand in taupe and alpine rose, which would look so fantastic at our wedding! But if I had to pick, I love the dessert stands that you can customize with the date! So special and all can be used again! Also love the Bella Cupcake liners, esp the lu lu pink and grey ones. Been eying those for a bridal shower I’m throwing soon!

  66. avatar Catherine reply

Clara French is truly an artist – her work is inspiring and makes me want to bake and decorate to a higher level just to do her presentation pieces justice! I absolutely love her Elle stand designs and would have to say that they are my favorite! Since my husband and I are trying to adopt through the state of Florida I can’t justify buying one for myself; but to own a custom stand by Clara French would be to own a treasure that would be passed through my family from generation to generation. Hammond’s Candies remind me of the candy my grandmother would keep on hand at her house. She never resorted to the individually wrapped bags of candy you could pick up at the grocery store – Grandma always made sure handmade, old-fashioned candy was around. These candies make me want to create a themed cake with matching cupcakes. The all-natural mint lollipops from Hammond’s would probably be one of my favorites from their site – this is probably because of it being the holiday season and I’d love to make a cake for a holiday party featuring the beautiful peppermint ribbon candy!I love so much of what Bake It Pretty carries. It’s hard to pick just ONE thing as a favorite… I think I’d have to go with the Baker’s Caps. You might think that’s an odd choice, and I must say that I probably love them for an odd reason. See, most of my fond memories from childhood involve myself, my mother and my grandmother in the kitchen together. We baked cookies around the holidays to take the the homeless shelter, we had ACTUAL taffy pulls (and I’m only 26 years old – we were doing taffy pulls in the 1990’s!), we made cupcakes for my Girl Scout troop meetings… we did it all. It wasn’t just baking, it was bonding. I love those memories as I loved being in those moments. The bakers caps from Bake It Pretty stand out to me because I’d love to have a chance to wear one when I share moments like that with MY kid(s)… granted, I can’t do that now. We’ll have to wait until after we’re matched with one of the children awaiting adoption in the Florida foster care system. But, I can’t wait to make a mess, and make great memories, with whichever child (or children) with whom we are blessed to be matched – – and I think these delightful caps would add a touch of whimsy to those memories.

Like a kid in a candy store… or a bride-to-be in online planning bliss… That’s how it feels to flip through these sites! Narrowing down to a top choice from any of these amazing companies is difficult, but since I have to choose:I love the hard candy molds on ‘Bake it Pretty’. I just bought a candy thermometer and have been experimenting with toffee, fudge, you name it. I would love to get my hands on some of these adorable molds, especially the ‘fleur de lis hard candy mold’ or the ‘fancy dish hard candy mold’! If I had these molds I would try my hand at making my own favors for our wedding. My other top pick has to come from the ‘Clara French’ boutique– these cake stands are works of art! I would be over the moon to have a ‘Flora’ cake stand, to use at our wedding and then to display on my kitchen counter everyday!

omg, seriously, this whole giveaway is *so* me!! Katharine, clearly we need to be friends ;) If I had to pick, I’d say my faves, hands down, are: (1) @ The Flour Pot, the cute garland created with the cookies (hee!!)– but I’m pretty sure that was just for illustration purposes (but gosh darn, that assortment of baby-shower-type cookies are cute!), so I’ll say the Snow Flurry cookies come in next :) and (2) eeee, on Bake It Pretty, a toss-up between the Princess Party cupcake kit (seriously, I’m getting more and more confirmation from The Universe that my 30th Birthday party should be princess themed!) and the Pirate Party cupcake kit (for the boy, perfection!)! But those doilies… toooooo cute (polka dots, cupcakes, paisley… love them!) (3) I can barely pick a fave from Clara French, everything is heartstoppingly beautiful! le sigh. Twist my arm + I’d pick either an Elle or Beaded Bijou or Petal cake stand :D eeeee, beautiful :) And I’m cutting off this novel here!!

Even more than their weddings, Southerners love to eat (don’t you think?).  Count the SW ladies in on that one!  The holidays, especially, are a great excuse to fire up your oven or dust off the new bakeware from your registry.  In honor of the Christmas season, then, 11 of our favorite southern treats.  What’s yours?

1. Moon pies

2. Cheese straws

3. Turkucken

4. Divinity

5. Pecan pie

6. Baked macaroni and cheese

7. Pistachio pralines

8. Bread pudding

9. Sweet potato pie

10. Black-eyed peas

Nothing says Christmas to my taste buds more than my grandfather’s famous Chocolate Gravy. Yes, chocolate gravy! He learned how to make it as a cook in World War II and my huge, Southern family eats it every year on Christmas morning as a special treat!

When I think of Southern holidays, I think of crawfish pie. I plan on serving that up for Christmas Eve dinner. Yum!

Being from Texas, my family makes a BBQ brisket for Christmas instead of a ham or a turkey. It puts a little southern twist on the holiday meal!!
