Southern Weddings

Monthly Archives: September 2009

If I didn’t really believe each bride was truly unique before this contest, after reading all your wonderfully original and ultra-personal plans for your big day, there’s no longer any doubt!  From our classic and relaxed ladies to our vintage and modern gals (and all you lovely hybrids in between), I had so much fun reading about how you’re going to make your weddings distinctly your own.  And now, without further ado, I’m pleased to announce the blushing brides who embody the classic, relaxed, vintage and modern in all of us!  Of course, this little experiment would not have been possible without the support of our fabulous vendors: Twisted Crystals, Stella & Dot, Bel Canto Designs, MGMart, Julianne Smith, evie s. and La Plates!

The Classic Bride:  Like Sex and the City’s Charlotte York, Nicole R. is all about tradition, timelessness and simple elegance.  Opting for anything monogrammed, engraved or sophisticatedly understated, and a fan of classic, minimal jewelry (think diamond studs and her grandmother’s pearl necklace), Nicole is the type of bride who has dreamed about marrying her Prince Charming since she was a little girl.  (Sigh!)

The Relaxed Bride:  Hoping to marry her honey where the couple first met at Cosi’s sandwich shop in NYC, Klau is, without question, a relaxed, low-key and no fuss girl.  This self-described “chilled-out bride” and her fiancé plan on inviting only fifteen or twenty of their closest friends and are looking forward to a fun, stress-free affair, which is especially fitting considering the groom proposed to his bride with a Mickey Mouse ring at a local Burger King!

The Vintage Bride:  Dramatic halls, gold chandeliers, marble floors and romantic balconies come together as the design inspiration for the lovely Kayla’s black-tie wedding.  With her elegant champagne, bronze and ivory color palate, this vintage bride evokes the sophistication, romance and grandeur of times past.

The Modern Bride:  Weddings don’t come more modern (or fun!) than Bowie Bride’s offbeat LA bash!  A mixed wedding party (yes, men serving as bridesmaids and ladies standing up with the groomsmen), a civil ceremony officiated by a judge and city buses rather than limousines are only a few of the things that make this non-traditional affair super fun and totally mod.

Congratulations to Nicole R., Klau, Kayla and Bowie Bride!  Each of our iconic brides will receive a custom gift set complete with products from Twisted Crystals, Stella & Dot, Bel Canto Designs, MGMart, Julianne Smith, evie s. and La Plates!

I’ve got to thank Whitebox Weddings for finally getting me in the Fall spirit!  Caroline + Matt’s intimate reception at the Barn at Fearrington (a local favorite here in North Carolina) is rustically romantic and wonderfully personal.  The soft lighting from flickering candles and tiny twinkle lights set such a warm and inviting mood that I almost wish I had been among the couple’s many happy friends and family.  And while the bride and groom put taste before appearance when it came to selecting their delicious three-tiered buttercream wedding cake, the master pastry chefs at the Fearrington House Restaurant, with the help of some ribbon, sugared fruit and fiddle ferns, succeeded in making one of the most beautiful cakes we’ve ever seen!  Happy Thursday and, most importantly, happy Fall (for real!).

Describe your wedding cake: I had been to so many weddings where the cake looked much better than it tasted so we decided that taste was paramount. To fit with the holiday season, we had spice cake with buttercream icing. Our pastry chef and florist added beautiful sugared fruits and fiddle ferns.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The pinecone placecards that my mother and sister-in-law spent hours putting together! I also loved having our favorite Christmas carols played during the ceremony. Our processional was Greensleeves, which always puts me in the holiday spirit.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? We took our pictures before the wedding so Mel and Sarah, our photographers, arranged a “first look. They had Matt wait for me holding my bouquet with his back turned. I will never forget the look on his face when he turned around and saw me in my dress for the first time. I think I fell in love with him all over again!

Three adjectives that describe the day are: Warm, memorable and loving.

What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? I am finishing my fellowship and we will be relocating. We are looking forward to experiencing a new city together. We also are proud new parents and are enjoying every minute with our little girl!

Now that we’re well into September, it’s time to stop dwelling on the spring and summer months past and instead get properly and officially excited about Fall and the promise of cooler months, changing leaves and all our favorite holidays!  What better way to get in the autumnal spirit than with another fabulous Whitebox Weddings photo spread?  The chocolate browns, spice reds and warm chartreuses of Caroline + Matt’s North Carolina wedding at the Barn at Fearrington are perfectly seasonal and deliciously warm and inviting.  Rustic fiddle ferns and bright hypericum gave the bride’s lush bouquet from Mary Stevens at Fearrington Farms a fresh, hand-picked look while pinecone accents and detailing added a natural, homey feel to the ceremony and reception.  We especially love that Caroline wore a timeless Melissa Sweet gown she had picked out nearly ten years before her wedding.  (Talk about just knowing when you’ve found the dress!)  Want to see this darling couple’s cozy barn reception?  Check back soon!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story.  We met at an online dating service!  Both of us were a little reluctant to try it at first.  Thank goodness we did, because we never would have met otherwise!  We chatted for a few weeks online and then he FINALLY asked for my phone number, but didn’t call for a week!  We met very soon after that and the rest is history!

What was the design inspiration for your wedding invitation? We wanted to create a holiday spirit without being completely “Christmas”.  We loved the pinecone motif and thought the chocolate and chartreuse color scheme was perfect for the season.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress:  I found my wedding dress ten years ago.  I was in Atlanta and ventured into Melissa Sweet’s bridal shop, which was in a little house at the time. I saw my dress and immediately knew it was the one. I was just waiting for the perfect man to wear it for!

Describe your wedding flowers: Gorgeous!  My meeting with our florist, Mary, was so much fun.  She let me wander through the flowers in the shop, mixing a color scheme that I liked.  I asked her to create a bouquet that was unstructured and looked freshly-picked.  The final product was perfect.  My bouquet was one of my very favorite details of the day.  It was a mix of deep reds and bright greens.  I especially loved the fiddle ferns and hypericum berries.

Excited for Fall yet?  Check back soon to see Part II of Caroline + Matt’s seasonal wedding!
