Google+ Real Wedding: Karen + Scott, Part II - Southern Weddings

Southern Weddings

More from the lovely wedding of Karen + Scott.  Check out the post by photographer Tim Will and the slide show {here}.

The weather on our wedding day was:  Sunny, about 75-80 degrees, with big white fluffy clouds. Perfect for the pictures!
What was the design inspiration for your wedding? We had sort of an “Adirondack” theme… but we mostly just used what we liked.  We didn’t get stressed about fitting to a certain “theme”
Favorite design element of your big day:  My aunt did the flowers and they were absolutely gorgeous! I left the design of the flowers to her. Because she is so talented at what she does, I didn’t want to distract her with too many instructions.
Describe your wedding flowers: The only instruction that I gave my aunt was that we wanted to use “fire and ice” roses because they were the traditional flower that firefighters use in their weddings (so my husband says).  Other than that, we just went for a fun wild flower theme. She ended up using mostly of pinks, whites and blues:  some stargazer lilies, blue delphiniums, roses.  My favorite part of the flowers was definitely my cascading bouquet.  It was modeled after my mother’s wedding bouquet, which my aunt also made 26 years ago!
Describe your wedding cake:  It was a four tier white cake with raspberry filling and white butter cream frosting in a “basket weave” style.  My aunt decorated the cake with flowers for the reception.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was:  The Adirondack themed beer coozie favors.  They were a big hit!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?  I really wasn’t stressed during the planning.  During the week before the wedding it was just important to learn how to let the little things slide, and realize that it’s impossible to make everyone happy.
Were there any special family traditions you included in the wedding?  It’s a Dutch tradition to lift the bride and groom up into the air on chairs during reception, and let me tell you, it was one wild ride!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? It’s seriously impossible to pick just one memorable moment.  The whole day was just an incredible experience.
Scariest moment? For Scott it was definitely being lifted up in the air on this little chair by a bunch of drunk men who really weren’t strong enough to keep him up there.
Funniest moment?  The best man’s speech.
Three adjectives that describe the day are:  Romantically, fantabulous, perfect.
What advice would you give to someone planning their wedding?  Just relax, don’t sweat the small stuff, and have fun!  Remember the whole day is about the two of you coming together as husband and wife.  In the end make sure that you remember that you need to be planning more for the MARRIAGE that lasts a LIFETIME rather than the wedding, which lasts only a day.
Best advice or most memorable comment someone made to you during the wedding celebration.  In marriage things work best when you are focusing more on how you can serve and give of yourself to your spouse.  When you find yourself getting caught up in what you want your spouse to give or to do, check first how you might put him/her first and everything will fall into place.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future?
We’re looking forward to starting a family. Two became one, now two will become three, and then four, and then who knows.

We wish Karen + Scott all the best!
