Cheers to {Tanja Lippert}!  Make sure to check out her other featured weddings on the SW blog, {Lisa + Benjamin}, {Erin + George} and one of our all-time favorite features- the Vintage Cowboy shoot part 1 and part 2 (gorgeous!).  But, this wedding is quite unlike any other.  Don’t believe me?  Take a closer look at Heather + Scott’s photos … second to last row.  See the Dryads, also known as forest nymphs? Details from this wedding include: catering by {Melons}, ceremony and reception at {Nestldown}, and flowers by {Plan Decor}. More to come.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Well… we met online. Scott and I only lived three miles from eachother in the San Francisco Bay Area, but most likely never would have met. We were both in a place in our lives to give the online dating process a try. He sent me the best introduction email I had ever received so I gave him a call. He was well spoken, (he has the most mellifluous voice), and very funny. We decided to meet for lunch at my favorite lunch spot in San Francisco at the Ferry Building. Lunch was wonderful, we have a lot in common both being in the creative arts, and we really hit it off. I immediately called my girlfriends and said, ” I just met someone and I think I could really like him”. We met again that week and have basically been with each other non-stop since that day. We were engaged 6 months later and married 6 months after that, almost one year to the day that we met.
What was the design inspiration for your wedding? Scott and I knew right away how we wanted our day to feel. Whimsical, magical, ethereal and natural. Scott proposed in the Redwoods of Northern California (a very special location to both of us and our families). When we were looking for a wedding location in the Bay Area and found Nestldown in the redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains, our decision was made. It was the only location we looked at. We knew the natural beauty of the location was to be the focus.
Favorite design element of your big day: Nature was the biggest element. Since we are both directors of arts, Opera for me and Games for Scott, we wanted our creativity to be present in the design of the wedding but without being too theatrical nor take away from the incredible redwood trees that surrounded the ceremony site. We wanted something that would make fun memories for our guests and perhaps be something they had not experienced before at a wedding. We decided to have some of my Opera colleagues hidden behind some of redwood trees dressed at Dryads or forest nymphs. My mother and sister and myself built their costumes completely out of natural materials we collected on our property. I hired a fabulous make-up artist I work with and she did the most extraordinary job of body-painting the four women. We told only our bridal party what was going to happen. The Dryads were in place before any guests arrived. Then during the beginning of the processional, they emerged from behind the trees and took their seats on redwood benches that were scattered in the tree line. They were so beautifully blended to look like the forest and it was magical. At the end of the ceremony they all joined the bridal party and tossed fresh rose petals in front of us as we recessed through an aisle of tree branches. Each seat for our guests had a small tambourine with rose petals so they could toss and then join play along with “Let the Sunshine In”, our recessional song.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: One of my younger sisters joined me for my first dress appointment at a great boutique in San Francisco who was having a sample sale. It was nearly the first dress I tired on. An Ines Di Santo design. I fell in love instantly and it fit so well. My sister jumped up and down so I knew that was the one. It was such a find at such a great price. I felt so beautiful in it on the big day.
Describe your wedding flowers: Karen Baba of {Plan Decor} in the Bay Area was incredible. I told her my thoughts on the color scheme; chocolate, cream and green for the ceremony with added red and orange for the reception. She had the most creative ideas and her expertise was apparent from the first meeting. I knew we were in good hands. I wanted flowers that represented the season and again were heightened by the location not in opposition with it. They were stunning!
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Definitely the Dryads and our fairy flower girls :)

More to come from this mystical wedding.

I adore this wedding!!! Tanja Lippert did a phenomenal job capturing the whimsical beauty of everything. I loved the wood nymphs and the flower girl faeries all set against the backdrop of a beautiful forest. It is just stunning altogether. I’m so glad SW featured it. It is so unique and I feel like you get a true sense of the bride and groom’s personalities. Ahh… Love! :)

LOVE your blog and hope I win a copy of the swag bag! My fiance lives in Mississippi so I’m hoping he was able to find a copy of the magazine for me, but I’m not sure he did yet, so I’d love to have one! :)

The best event I ever went to was my own wedding! :) Why, you ask? Because it was exactly what i’ve always wanted… and the dancing started the minute we arrived and didn’t end until nearly midnight!!!!!!

I think I’d have to say Halloween from 3 years ago. My fiance and I went as "The Incredibles" and it was hilarious! He was even sporting the muscle-chest and everything. He’s by far the most "incredible" man I know, and I appreciate that he doesn’t take himself too seriously to put on a plastic-hair wig and spandex for some fun.

I’d love to win! Thanks. x

Just minutes after he popped the question, my fiance, Zack, drove me to our favorite home-owned coffee bar. There, he had a huge party waiting for me with all of our friends and family. It was wonderful! The baristas were even serving a new drink in our honor, the B&Z Latte. This coffee bar is not only the place where we first met, it will also be the venue for our reception!-Bethany

The best party I ever attended was the 18th birthday party of my friend (and then-future, now-former roommate), Natalie. At that party, all of my dearest friends sat me down and got me to gush that I really did want to date the man who is now my fiance! Natalie immediately called him, and the rest is history!

The best party I ever attended was a small dinner gathering where we had to "toast" each time we wanted to talk a sip of our drink. It was a wonder way to say wonderful nice things about everyone at the table all night long.

  9. avatar Meghan reply

The Burt-a-thon at Starlight Drive-In in Atlanta. It was a great night full of Burt Reynolds’ movies, DeWar’s and Drive-in food. Our friends were there so we were able to chill out before everything started. But at the end of the night, the best part was his proposal. It wasn’t until later that I realized he bought the poster for the event. This is very unlike him. Not only is he frugal but posters aren’t his style. It’s huge (30 x 40 inches and the frame is even bigger.) and hangs in our dining room now. A reminder of a night I’ll never forget.

  10. avatar Lauren Fussell reply

The best party that I have ever attended was definitely my best frient Megan and my brother John Tyler’s wedding in September! It was absolutely the perfect day. Everything that we planned from the flowers to the lights in the trees and the sofa under the stars was wonderful and everyone had the best time. Coincidently it was also featured no the SW blog, which was super exciting for us!!

The thing I need the most is the actual magazine! My local B&N doesn’t carry it.

We had a party at Charleston Harbor Marina by our boat after the bridge run last April. We had a bunch of friends over a bunch of shrimp and all the "fixins" for a regular old dock party. Clay told me to "wipe the shrimp juice off [my] fingers" and take a walk with him. We walked to the end of the dock and he dropped on his knee. Of course I said yes! After he did it the sky turned black and it started storming so everyone squeezed into the boat and we had an impromptu engagement party. :-)Best party… ever!

  13. avatar Lisa reply

My favorite party was the first time I met my fiance. It was a board game party thrown by one of his coworkers. My twin sister works with them too and she brought me to the party.

Best party ever is going to be WPPI this year. We’ve never gone and we’re so rediculously excited about it! I know it’s going to be the craziest party I’ve ever been to so I can’t think of anything else that will come close. :)

The best party I ever attended was a Holiday Cocktail party a few years ago. Hands down the best food and drinks ever! Lots of great cheeses and holiday inspired cocktails. And the party was with some really great friends.

There is no way I can choose one. I CAN choose a time period. Summer 2007 – best time of my life – I had 4 of my closet friends in the same city and it seems like we had a party every other weekend… two awesome birthday parties that summer – just a great summer full of lots of get togethers and fun!

  18. avatar Kate reply

My fiance and I had our first date at his friend’s Halloween costume party. It took about a year for his friends to stop calling me "Little Red Riding Hood" and address me by my real name.

  19. avatar Katie reply

The best party I ever attended was a surprise party that my roommate Heather and I planned for our other roommate, Julie. She was convinced that we were going to the beach for the night to celebrate, but what she didn’t know was that we’d planned a whole big elaborate surprise right there where we lived. She’d always said she wanted to have a photo scavenger hunt for her birthday… So we invited tons of people over but blindfolded Julie in the car, so she couldn’t tell where we were… We told her one of us needed to stop to go to the bathroom – when we were actually stopping at home! She got out, we took off the blindfold and 30 of her closest friends were all there waiting! We had a great day of scavenger hunting – all the things were about Julie… Everyone loved it!

  20. avatar Brittney reply

The best party by far is my engagement dinner. I felt so loved and the weekend was such a whirlwind (and such a SURPRISE) that I just loved every minute of it. If I knew then what I know now, I would’ve soaked up EVERYTHING! I remember it, but I wish I could go back to that very weekend and live it all over again. My then boyfriend proposed on May 24th and had a dinner planned for the following day. After our proposal we went to a fancy dinner. SO FUN! My *now* fiance planned it all (which I love) and we all met our family and friends at a favorite restaurant. I love that weekend so much! I can’t wait until our WEDDING weekend… how much of a blast will that be? 3 months 3 weeks to go :)

  21. avatar Fran reply

The Best Party I ever attended would have to be the first wedding I ever photographed! The Bride allowed me to bring along my husband for support and as a 2nd photographer and encouraged me while taking pictures to get down on the dance floor! Everyone was so sweet & kept commenting on how great it was that I was taking so many pictures and not missing a beat while also having fun! At the end of the night it was almost sad to leave and say goodbye to the Bride & Groom who have since become good friends of ours & trusted us with their wedding photos. I can’t say that any weddings I haven’t done since then haven’t been great because they all are wonderful & fun in their own ways, but I don’t think a photographer ever forgets her first wedding!

  24. avatar Haley reply

Oops. Didn’t read the rules! My favorite party I went to was my Maid of Honor’s Engagement Party/New Year’s Eve party! I NEVER have anything fun to do on NYE and I am so glad one of my best friend’s came up with this idea. It was a great party that I will remember forever.

The best parties and events for me are always those spent with my loved ones — summer outdoor picnics are a favorite!

my best party ever was the one I helped plan for my sister’s pinning ceremony (graduating from officer’s training in the army). my mom was dying from brain tumors and couldn’t get out of bed, so my sister and I worked with her commanding officer, and he and the other officers from my sister’s unit came to our house and had my sister’s pinning ceremony right there in my parent’s bedroom. We then had a nice cozy party with close friends and family in the upstairs of the house, that way my mom could feel involved. It was an incredible thing we got to do, as not long after my mom passed away.

The best party I’ve ever attended was called the "freaker’s ball" for my Fiance’s Law School. Everyone get’s dressed up and has a great time. My Fiance went as a bum and I went as a St Pauli Girl. We had a blast dancing. My favorite part of the night was when they played Thriller and everyone was trying to attempt the dance together. The only guys that seemed to have it together were a bunch of his guy friends who took small children’s care bear costumes and attached them to the care bear color sweat suit so they could be care bears. Them doing the thriller dance had me and my Fiance laughing so hard we were crying.

The best party I ever went to was the wedding of a college friend. It was a small affair at a family friend’s home. There were no big centerpieces or rose petals down the aisle just good food, good drinks and good friends. We danced the night away and then relaxed in the natural hot springs near our rented house. It was phenomenal and the inspiration for my own wedding!

  31. avatar Jaime McD reply

The best event ever was my own wedding on the island of the Dominican Republic. My husband and I had the time of our lives and so did our guests. I still get family members telling me that was the best wedding they’d ever been to and that they’d like to do another family trip one day.

  32. avatar Emily reply

I really loved my friends’ wedding last month! They totally put their personalities into the details of the wedding. In place of the unity candle lighting ceremony, they had a jello ceremony where they mixed the ingredients together to signify that they are now one and can no longer be separated. I have never witnessed a jello ceremony before, and I thought it was awesome! And during the reception, the couple played Rock Band with the bride’s mom playing the drums!

My younger sister’s no-more-chemo party… it was a celebration not only of her victory over cancer, but of the new life she had ahead of her.

The best event I ever attended was a blind date that my best friend had been set up on. She refused to go alone, so she brought a bunch of her girlfriends and he brought a bunch of his buddies. They hated each other, but my fiance and I met and fell head over heels in love that night!

  36. avatar Toni reply

The best party I’ve been to recently has to be my husband’s grandparents’ anniversary. Their sons got together and invited everyone to the Chart House in Old Town Alexandria, but the restaurant was not the highlight of the evening. What really set the tone for the event were the black and white reprints from Mr. and Mrs. M’s first date, in the 1940’s! In Europe!! How serendipitous to have a photographer nearby, to take pictures of you on your very first date… the couple looked amazing, he in his Army uniform, she in her smart skirt suit. Sixty years later, their smiles are just as bright and their love is just as strong. Inspiring! We had a private room at the Chart House and the food was amazing, by the way.

The best party I have ever been to was a wedding at Lake Forest Academy. The outside wedding was beautiful and the doors opening up to the garden wonderful. The weather was perfect and if I could some day I would have loved to get married there but I live too far away now and it is really out of my budget.

My favorite party was my engagement party last October. It was the first time that all the family had gotten together in the last 5 years. I was nervous that my fiance’s family and mine wouldn’t connect, but they had a great time. Everyone clicked so well!!! The FI’s dad cook a pig in the grown and we had a BBQ with all the trimmings. We laughed and ate all night long. It was great to see everyone enjoy the time they spent together and looking forward to seeing me and the FI spedning our lives together.

I’d have to honestly say my wedding! We had a destination wedding in St. John. We were able to spend several fun days with our nearest and dearest. There were sooo many laughs and fabulous memories. A great time was had by all and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

The most memorable event that comes to mind is what happened right after my boyfriend proposed to me on a hill as the sun was setting. We were walking back to his place, with cars passing us on the freeway. My heart was elated and so joyful that he told me "I want to spend the rest of my life with you". As I entered his apartment, my first glimpse was the faces of all my nearest and dearest friends. Their joy was so genuine and palpable that I felt so blessed. They were happier than I was! What a treat! There was a sign "Congraulations Patty and Richard", pictures of us all over the walls, and glow-in-the-dark stickers glue-sticked onto the walls. My sister had made all the yummy appetizers for us to enjoy. After chatting, laughing, and taking pictures we all went to get burritos and watch "Ever After". Bliss.

Having been a dateless prom go-er the year previous, I told her that I would love to go with him!He never did ask me, but two months later, we kissed under the stars and have been together ever since.

The best party I ever attended was mine and my bff’s annual joint birthday party in 2006. It felt great to not only be with my bff, but be surrounded by all my best friends. The only person missing was my now-fiance, whom I had just started dating at the time (and was hundreds of miles away). I told him I loved him for the first time (via drunk dial!) that night.

since i am not married yet.. my wedding is not my favorite event, YET! the best event i have ever been too would have to be passionately pink for a cure. it was a bridal fashion show fundraiser for the susan g koman foundation. the best part was when 6 breast cancer survivers walked the runway in custom made gowns. it was such a beautiful moment to see those women standing tall and beautiful! it was truly an amazing moment.

  52. avatar Moll reply

The best party I attended was a party for two! While we were out to dinner, friends set up the house and snuck out so that my fabulous now-fiance could propose. It counts as a party if there’s champagne and presents, right?

The best party I have ever been to was my grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary, because it was wonderful to see such an example of committment and true love, surrounded by their 8 children, 21 grandchildren, and 4 great grand children. These days, seeing something like that is truly inspiring. Plus, the party was a blast too!

This past new year’s eve was very memorable. My fiance and I were at home in Michigan with my family for the holidays and we hadn’t had power for 6 days due to the weather. We finally got power back the evening of NYE and stayed up late, dancing to old records and drinking a way-too-old bottle of champagne my parents had saved. We all went to bed thinking we hadn’t had so much fun in a very long time.

The best party I’ve ever attended was actually my Soiree’ in 1995. An African-American version of a Debutante ball which was sponsored anually by the Vogue Socialite Club in my hometown – the playground of the south – the MS. Gulf Coast – Gulfport/Biloxi. However, post Hurrincane Katrina, the club disbanned; forfeiting for what for many girls of the golden gilf coast was the best party ever!!! I hope to rekindle some of this excitement when I get married, at home, in April 2010.

One of the best parties I ever went to was a New Years Eve party hosted at my fiance’s family farm (which is where we are having in October)! It was the first time I ever realized…"oh my gosh, I could get married here!" And sure enough, a few months later, we were engaged and planning a wedding at this beautiful rustic farm. His siblings and mine were both present, and it was not only a celebration of a new year to come but also to reflect on the year (2007) that brought us together!

My favorite party was just a simple dinner party with my family & friends outside…it was totally casual and we ate crabs right off the table, drank coronas, make a fire, and toasted marshmallows. It was awesome!

  62. avatar Amy reply

The best party I ever attended would have to have been… my great grandparents 50th wedding anniversary. It was so touching to be there when you could plainly see how much they still loved each other after all those years and how much they still were trying to make their marriage work. It was so moving when they described how they met after the war and my great grandfather saw my great grandmother standing outside a theatre (with another man mind you) and he grabbed her and kissed her and said I’m going to marry you someday beautiful. I think we all laughed and cried at the same time.

the best party i’ve ever been to wasn’t really a party at all, but a gathering of my family and best friends, the night my fiance proposed! he set it up with them ahead of time, so when we went to the restaurant after he popped the question….they were all waiting for us! we had a wonderful dinner, and my friends brought flowers and a cake, and then we all went out on the town to celebrate =) it was one of the best nights of my life!

My favorite party was the welcome reception for our vow renewal. It was held at a plantation in Charleston, outside on the lawn. The night was beautiful and everyone just relaxed and chatted. It was a small group, only anout 25 people so we were able to get a chance to talk and visit with everyone!

New Year’s Eve 2004–it was when my fiance and I first kissed! We had been friends for years before that (even went to prom together) but it just took a little champagne for our real feelings to surface!

The BEST party I ever attended was probably the night me and my bridesmaids spent in Pamplona before the day of Running with the Bulls in Spain. We were backpacking through Europe and all the hotels were completely sold out so we spent the night in a bathroom stall in an underground parking garage. Everyone in the city drinks sangria until the cows come home and NO one sleeps. It was quite a party!

  67. avatar Erin reply

Absolutely my parents’ moving away party before they moved cross country. All of their friends and family came and ate great BBQ and drank fabulous wine. But, the food didn’t even matter. All we wanted to do was sit around the fire pit and hang out together!!!! It may be the last time we’ll all be together again so it was certainly bittersweet!

My bridal shower. There was over 30 people there, and it was overwhelming, but still fantastic. There was a ton of food, and everyone had a great time.

i didn’t realize it was the best party i’d ever attended until later, when i decided to marry the guy i met there! it was the first annual chug-n-run, organized by a mutual friend. we met at his house and started out on a 4-mile run, stopping at a handful of bars en route for a beer. my finance and i were 2 of 3 people who decided to show up in full regalia – spandex, sweatbands and aviators. love at first sight!

When my friend Lynn announced her pregnancy, her sister and I were thrilled. We started planning her shower right away. I enjoyed every minute of that shower because it was created with love and shared with people with genuine affection for one another. It was the perfect party.

The best party I ever went to was a very casual staff party at the end of a session of summer camp in the caribbean. My husband-to-be and I met in the British Virgin Islands. He was a captain and I was a scuba diving instructor. It was at this party that we shared our first dance together and I’m telling you…even though he is not that great of a dancer (sorry Winston!)….I’ve been head over heels in love ever since :)

The BEST party ever was our wedding of course! We partied all night and were the last ones to leave (then of course there was our private "after-party"….)

Best party I’ve attended must be my bon voyage party with my research group for 5 years. We made foods from all over the world, chilled out, relax and my boss played..leavin on a jet plane on his CD player. It’s amazing how much friendship is built throughout the years.

Best party I ever attended was my Medical Schools burger party the night before classes began. The reason why it was the best party ever was b/c nothing was ready! no food, no drinks, super hot weather, people very hungry for food, but everyone was SO excited to be there and to start a very very very difficult journey that we all became such good friends. it was amazing!!!i’d love to win that bag!

I’ll never, ever forget my grandparents 50th Wedding Anniversary! The morning of the event, all of their immediate family (children and grandchildren) met at a Winery in Ithaca, New York and we spent the afternoon together. My grandpa had purchased a new wedding band for my grandma and he presented her with it, we all told stories and talked of memories…it was so much fun. At the end of lunch, they had both thought that the "event" was over….they headed downtown to a walk around and we headed to the old, original theater, where they had gone one their first date…over 54 years ago! We had hired a barbershop quartet and made a video of their whole lives…people from all over the world (over 200) joined us in celebrating. We all stood on the city street, while we waited for them to come around the corner….the total shock on their faces was priceless and brought us all to tears of joy! I will never forget that day!

The best event I ever went to was a friends wedding. There were less than 50 people, it was held on the beach and the reception was at a local restaurant. We had a 4 course meal paired with wines that ended with chocolate soufflés! They danced their first dance through an iPod and that was it. No tosses, no cake, nothing that said wedding except her dress. Right then and there Bryan and I decided that was what we wanted for our wedding. It was amazing!

The best event I ever attended was the engagement party my parents threw for my fiance and me. It was in a private room of a gorgeous restaurant and we were surrounded by our closest friends and family, just like our wedding will be.

The best party that I ever went to was my best friend’s wedding. I was blessed to be her MOH. It was beautiful and elegant without feeling stuffy, everyone was out on the dance floor having a good time. She and I have been friends since pre-school and I was just so happy for the beautiful couple.

One of my most favorite parties was my ten year high school reunion! Two of my very good friends and I planned the entire weekend and it rocked everyone’s socks off! We are from a small town so it was hard to go "over the top" since not everyone wanted to spend a ton of loot, but we made personalized details that made it wonderful! The amount of fun I had in those three days was incredibleI would definitley do it again! Reconnecting with old friends and picking up like we were still at a party in high school was priceless!

In college, before my fiance and started dating, he asked me to be his Valentine by leaving a wax-sealed note (on stationery he bought just for me!) and a rose in my dorm room. Later that day, I caught him coming back from the best Italian market in town… he was on his way down to the Saybrook kitchen to cook dinner – but he kept it all a surprise until that night. When we met up again, he had braised lamb and risotto ready for us. My roommate, whose boyfriend was in Australia, didn’t have date for the night. So we invited her down to the kitchen and we all shared the meal. Who says three’s a crowd? It was the best party a sweet guy, his almost-girlfriend, and her roommate could have asked for.

It would have to be one of my best friends weddings; it was laid-back, in a garden in the middle of downtown. It had lovely, simple flowers, simple lighting, fun music, and a lot of dancing. Everyone had a great time and you could really feel the love shared between my friend and her husband.

The best party I ever went to was my Grandparent’s 50th. The whole family was there and I am finally at an age that I am truely best friends with my mom. We danced and drank all night just like we were old friends from high school. They are memories I will always heve. I only hope my wedding is as special a that night was. :)

Without a doubt, my best friend’s wedding holds the title as my all-time favorite event! The day was perfect, the bride was beautiful, and the setting at Charles Towne Landing in Charleston, SC was picturesque. After the ceremony, I walked back down the aisle and saw my future husband standing across the oak-draped grounds looking handsome in his polkadot bowtie. In between my maid-of-honor duties of champagne toasts and making sure the photographer was keeping busy, I spent every spare second trying to get to know the groom’s cute friend. Now, nine months later, we’re engaged!

I think that the best party I ever attended had to be by accident. My friends and I stopped at a party on the way home one evening. We thought we’d be there for a few minutes. But there he was, the cute boy drinking pabst blue ribbon in a green argyle sweater. This boy is my fiance now, and he still looks fabulous in that sweater, except now, he shares that pabst blue ribbon with me.

The best event I ever attended, was a wedding that my love and I photographed. Not only was the wedding beautiful and perfect, down to every single detail, but the bride and groom were so genuinely in love. Such an inspiration for me and my own relationships. On top of that it was so special to be able to share that experience with the man I love.

The best event I’ve attended was my sister’s wedding and reception. She’s my best friend, and to see her bursting with happiness as she married her soul mate made me so happy. It didn’t hurt that we celebrated the entire evening on the dance floor!

My favorite event was my former roommates wedding. It was a smaller 50 person affair in a local museum. The bride and her mom had DIY’ed many of the elements long before "diy" was cool. The best thing was everything from the music to the ceremony was so "them". It was really the only wedding I’ve attended where I can say I honestly had a blast, and one of the few where I remember all the little details…because each one represented them as a couple so well. As my fiancé and I plan our own wedding, that wedding is the one I so much want to duplicate….b/c at the end of the night I want our guests to feel comfortable and that they have truly been a part of celebrating our wedding with us….not just attending it.
