Join us in Grand Cayman!

by in Main on

If you are committed to the wedding business– to innovation, growth, education, building relationships with key people in the industry– then you HAVE to join us in Grand Cayman next summer for {engage! 09::something blue}.  I am honored be asked by the phenomenal Rebecca Grinnals and Kathryn Arce to speak at next year’s star-studded event.  I honestly feel pretty star-struck myself having my name listed with these wedding giants!  eeek!  I am so excited just to get to GO to engage, much less speak.

(side note… if you followed us on Twitter through the last {engage!08:the encore} experience, you know we took the Ritz Carlton’s towncar to Walmart to buy bathing suits really late at night because we just had to take advantage of the gorgeous pool.  Well, we have already packed our bathing suits for Grand Cayman!  I don’t think there is a Walmart near the Ritz there.)

PS- if you have any questions about our experience at engage or you are on the fence about going, email me.  I’d love to have the opportunity to tell you how much it changed our business, our outlook on the wedding industry and opened up so many incredible opportunities for us!

See you there!

My fave is sweet potato pie! And right now is the time for it! Mmmmmmmmm….

  3. avatar Leslie Roark reply

My favorite is what our family calls Hello Dollies! Melt a stick of butter, add a layer of crumbled vanilla wafers, a layer of semi-sweet chocolate chips, a layer of pecans, a layer of coconut and then pour one can of sweetened condensed milk evenly over the top. You put it in the oven and bake it at 350 degrees until it’s golden brown (about 30 minutes). It’s a sugar overload but, man oh man, IT IS DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. avatar Ashley A reply

Ohhh I can so use that candy right now… me want now :e)

  5. avatar Marissa reply

My favorite southern sweet is Moravian Sugar Cake! Im from Winston- Salem, NC- and Christmas is all about the Moravian sugar cake, cookies and teas! 21. avatar Gloria N reply

My goodness…..I’d have to say (without a doubt) that my absolute favorite Southern dessert is my Momma’s Peach Pie. She actually makes her own homemade crust, takes half and roll it out for the bottom, and the other half She rolls out and cuts in to strips to pattern across the top (it’s not only delicious, but pretty too). While She’s doing that she is cooking her peaches with butter, sugar, and spices. Then she puts it all together and right before she puts it into the oven She pours melted butter over the top of it (this gives the crust a beautiful brown color), and lightly sprinkles some sugar and spices over it! And that is MY Favorite Southern Dessert!!!!!

  22. avatar Lindsay reply

Ambrosia! For sure. It’s a labor of love, and my favorite holiday dessert. The fruit of the gods!!

  23. avatar Shantuck reply

    Red velvet cake… mmmm!

  24. avatar samanth55 reply

Okay, it’s hard to decide between red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, buttermilk pie and…key lime bread pudding. Yes, that’s right- KEY LIME, BREAD PUDDING. Hands down the best dessert I’ve had in my life. I don’t know if it’s a "southern" dessert but I had it in Charleston, South Carolina and though I’d died and gone to heaven. Key lime. Bread pudding. Who knew.

  25. avatar Leah reply

My favorite southern dessert is my grandmother’s recipe of banana pudding. It’s simple to make and simply delicious. There is never a family gathering without it!

  26. avatar Sam T reply

There is a Buttermilk Pie recipe that has been in my family for more than five generations, and is an absolute must EVERY single holiday season! It’s funny, but each year – despite having made these pies for eons – we still call around to one another to make sure we’ve got it completely right. You see, there’s a specific science to how all the ingredients are folded in, one by one, to get the texture just right. The end result is a rich, golden, buttery, sweet custard pie with perfectly flaky crust – topped to perfection with a huge dollop of whipped cream. It’s a true hit with anyone who’s ever tasted it, and I can’t wait to pass it on to my daughter in the years to come!

  27. avatar Lisa reply

It kinda counts as Southern: real, honest to goodness, homemade Florida key lime pie. I’m Florida transplant so I’m all about the key lime pie. It’s like a little bit of sunshine in your mouth

  97. avatar Genna reply

Mine would have to be a treat I had a long time ago and have not had since. It was a secret recipe called "Bertha’s Better Butters." As I recall, it was something like a buttermilk toffee treat that you could break off and enjoy just a little (OR A LOT!) if you wanted. My friend Morgan’s mother used to make them for us, and we would alway bring them on our annual beach trips. We’ve all grown up since, but I will not forget Bertha’s Better Butters! Not only did they taste amazing, but they remind me of some wonderful times as a kid!

  98. avatar alexis reply

I’m going to go with a good trifle as my fav. They have the potential to go terribly wrong, but mix all the right textures and sweets and you get layers and layers of pretty deliciousness. 103. avatar pamela t reply

My favorite was my grandmothers peach cobbler. I do not know if it would be considered a "Southern" dessert or not but it was her grandmother’s recipe who grew up in Georgia and I have never tasted a cobbler as incredible as it since.

  108. avatar Alexis Vice reply

Definitely, my grandma’s Brer Rabbit Molasses cookies….they have just a hint of nutmeg, ginger & cinnamon to remind you of gingerbread cookies…they’re great!

  109. avatar Amber reply

Its a toss up between red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting and a good praline… I think the buttery melt-in-your-mouth nature of the praline makes me lean in that direction right now. The holidays are about full flavors and friends and family to share them with.

  110. avatar amy wood reply

my favorite is what my nephews have simply named "Delicious". It’s got a vanilla wafer crust, next layer with a mixture of cream cheese, sugar, and butter, then applesauce on top of that, then topped off with cool whip. i tell you it is to DIE for! It’s so fluffy and light, yet you still feel horribly sinister for eating it:)

  111. avatar Katie reply

By far my favorite Southern dessert is a Pumpkin Pecan Pie. It combines two of my absolute favorite sweet treats. What more could a girl ask for?

  112. avatar Elizabeth reply

There are SO many to choose from! But a New Orleans girl born & bred I must vote for my great grandmother’s Pralines… it’s not just that distinct sugar-y, nut-y taste, it was sitting on a stool in her kitchen, watching my Bibi (a true Southern character!) measure, boil and stir in her signature, super high, polka dot, heels – while of course letting me taste test along the way :)

  113. avatar Sarah Small reply

My favorite is Apple Crisp or Mississippi Mud Pie ot Pecan Pie. Yummmmy!!!

  114. avatar Mary reply

My favorite Southern dessert item is candied pecans! Straight outta the tin, no need to put them in a pie or on a cookie :)

  115. avatar Kendra reply

Homemade Peach Ice Cream. It’s much easier to make than it was way back in the 80’s (ha!). But these days it’s not as much fun. On balmy Sundays after church, my mother and Grandmother would slice fresh peaches and my cousin and I would fight over who would turn the handle. I’d sit on the top and churn as my cousin added salt to the bucket. It was such a sweet reward when it was done. So icy/creamy – completly un-store bought. :) YUM!!

  116. avatar Astrid Garcia reply

    No doubt about it: Pralines!

  117. avatar Cat reply

Pralines, hands down. My favorite are from River Street Sweets on Market Street in Charleston… They are out of this world. And I have a funny story to go with them! One year for Valentine’s Day, my mom was sweet enough to send a surprise box of these pralines to me at work in Pennsylvania. But there was a mix-up on delivery; the card just read "We love you, Mom and Dad" and somehow the box got delivered to my boss. She shared some with me and I, totally unaware of the intended recipient, was so blown away that her parents, who are from the Poconos, knew about my favorite candy shop in Charleston and sent her those same treats. It wasn’t until I was sitting at my desk enjoying the praline she gave me that I realized they must have been for me, and called my mom to confirm. I thought it was so funny that I waited and let my boss call and thank her own mom… We still laugh about it!

  118. avatar Whitney reply

I love Derby pie(chocolate pecan) and fried apple pies from North Georgia and many other southern desserts like the red velvet armadillo cake! BUT if I have to chose a favorite it would be Chocolate Bourbon Balls b/c they remind me of this season! Yum Yum!

  119. avatar Karen M reply

I just love Key Lime Pie. Thanks for the giveaway.

Today we have a treat for you!  Brooke + Thor really wanted to introduce the South to their guests.  They started by having their Save the Date’s (created by {Hatch Show Print}) and other paper items made to resemble Ol’ Opry style posters. Brooke + Thor treated their guests to chicken fingers, shrimp, deviled eggs, ham biscuits and 200 {Krystal Cheeseburgers}. Catering by Tia Grady of The King’s Table Catering. Two fabulous florists worked on this wedding: Flowers by Marie Rippy and Cindy’s Garden Shop. Special thanks to Tiffany Hughes and Stacey Little of {Lucky Photography} for submitting this fun wedding. They also put us in touch with Brooke + Thor who filled out this hillarious interview. Brooke even added in this bit about her photographers, “Tiffany was the first vendor I met with, and I instantly loved her. I had gotten to know her by reading her brilliant blog, and I knew she had the kind of charisma that I’d want around me on my wedding day. I have gotten nothing but rave reviews of our photos from our friends and family.”  Now check out what the ladies of Lucky had to say about Brooke + Thor {here}.

How did the two of you meet?  Brooke: I was living in Los Angeles and my oldest friend was a Naval officer stationed in San Diego. He called me and told me he was being sent to Afghanistan. I told him I wanted to see him before he left, and I bought three tickets for a Pat Green concert down in San Diego; I thought he could bring his wife and we’d all have a good time and keep our minds off his deployment. On my drive down there, he called and said, “My wife is a nurse at Sea World, and there’s been some kind of emergency and she can’t come.” I said “Well, I’ve already bought the tickets, so you need to bring a date for me. They were expensive, so make sure he’s a good one.” He showed up with Thor. To this day, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to whatever fat man had a heart attack at Sea World that day.
Describe the proposal: I can’t believe the government ever trusted Thor with classified information, because every time he has a secret, he starts acting squirrelly. We were on a Christmas vacation to Colorado, and Thor suddenly wanted to drive me out to the Colorado National Monument. After winding up and up and up those snowy roads, we stopped at an overlook. I saw the temperature on the dashboard: 13 degrees. We looked at the view, and Thor got down on one knee and asked if he could spend the rest of his life with me. I cried and immediately agreed, but I would have said anything to get back in the heated car.
What attracted me to my husband was: When I met Thor, I had been living in Los Angeles for 9 years, and I had given up on ever meeting anyone with substance. Thor just seemed so real, and solid and unlike anyone else I knew. If he told me he was going to do something, he did it. On our first date, I went to Thor’s house and met his dog, Ella. While I was in the restroom, I heard Thor tell her, “I know! I’m excited she’s here, too. But we have to calm down.” I thought, “I could really love a man who has that kind of conversation with his dog.”
A date we went on that we’ll always remember: Brooke: For his birthday, I took Thor to see Eric Clapton – his favorite – in Las Vegas. As the lights were going down, I said, “I really hate guitar solos.” You should have seen the look on his face.
Were there any special family traditions you included in the wedding? We were blessed to be able to use wedding rings that were handed down to us. I now wear my great-grandmother’s ring that has her wedding date inscribed on it – 1913! And Thor’s grandfather, who is thankfully still with us, graciously handed his over to Thor. It made a nice moment in the ceremony when we were able to announce that our rings represented over 100 years of successful marriage.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Brooke: Instead of the classic “Who gives this woman…” we wrote a portion of our ceremony to include a response from our gathered friends and family. Our officiant asked the assembly, “Do you offer this man and woman your blessing as husband and wife?” And everyone yelled “We do!” It was such an enthusiastic response that we knew for sure everyone there supported our union a hundred percent. Thor: Seeing Brooke for the first time in her wedding dress.
What was the design inspiration for your wedding? While my family is from Alabama, I knew that most of my Los Angeles and New York-based friends had never been to the South, and neither had most of Thor’s family. I wanted a wedding that would be fun and casual and would feature elements that were uniquely Southern. When our guests checked into the hotel, they were given a welcome bag filled with Alabama pecans and Moon Pies and my grandmother’s famous almond cookies. At the wedding, we served ham biscuits and chicken fingers and boiled shrimp. I wanted to create an environment that felt like a really great party, and I wanted everyone to leave thinking about how great Alabama is. For a little extra insurance, we passed out 200 Krystal cheeseburgers at the end of the party as a to-go gift.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I took my bridesmaid Amy along; because she has two small children, I figured she would be very good at dressing other people and dealing with temper tantrums. I knew I wanted a casual, fun wedding, so I was looking for a dress I could dance and eat devilled eggs in. I’m sure if I were one of those tall, skinny brides, I would have approached this differently, but I bought the second dress I tried on, because I knew when we were done, I could go have lunch.
Describe your wedding flowers: We used a mix of real flowers and handmade tissue flowers. I had seen crepe paper flowers on Martha Stewart’s website, and I knew there must be some way to use them as centerpieces. With the help of friends (who I will owe forever,) I ended up making about 400 tissue paper flowers. The project started out as a way to save money – I knew I was going to need about 15 centerpieces, but didn’t have the budget to buy them from our florist. I made several prototypes and ended up using this one. Including the mason jar, sticks and ribbon, these centerpieces cost less than $10 apiece. We had enough tissue flowers left over that on the morning of the wedding my dad and bridesmaids started putting them in the trees, as if they were “blooming.” This spontaneous bit of creativity turned out to be one of my favorite details from the wedding.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We got an amazing response from our guests when they received their invitations in the mail. I’m a huge country music fan, and when I was working in Nashville on the first few seasons of “Nashville Star,” I fell in love with Hatch Show Print. They’ve been in business since 1879, and they print the concert posters for the Grand Ol’ Opry, etc. I called them up and worked with a designer over the phone and we created poster-sized wedding invitations that Thor and I sent out in mailing tubes. They ended up costing less than most “normal” invitations, and they’ve become a great keepsake – it’s so cool to think that the little letterpress elements they used on our poster could have been used on a poster for Hank Williams or Patsy Cline. I love visiting our friends and family and seeing our poster hanging up on their walls.
Funniest moment?
I decided not to discriminate when choosing bridesmaids, so I ended up with my two best male friends in the world as “bridal attendants.” It turned out that Will, my macho, John-Wayne-loving friend was my most high-maintenance bridesmaid. “Can I wear a top hat?” “Where is my bouquet?” “How’s my hair?” “If we were the ‘Sex and the City’ girls, which one would I be? I think Miranda.” He kept us laughing all day.
The most unexpected event on our wedding day was: This would involve bridesmaids and keg stands, which is probably not the kind of thing you want to print in your lovely magazine. My grandmother was appalled.
What advice would you give to someone planning their wedding?  My aunt told me early on in the process, “The only things people really remember after a wedding are: ‘Did I have a good time?’ and ‘Was the food good?’ Looking back on the weddings I’ve attended, I have to agree. I can’t remember what most brides were wearing, but I can tell you who served up the dry chicken.
What’s next for you as a couple? We’re going on a ski honeymoon in Banff this December, because Thor swears the snow in Canada is COMPLETELY diffe
rent than the snow in Montana. We’re looking forward to remodeling our house. When that’s done, we’ll probably start fighting over what to name our children, since I don’t share Thor’s view that they should be named after other Norse gods.

Congratulations to Brooke + Thor! We wish you a fun ski trip and a lifetime of adventures to come!
