I’m convinced that I learned more during the internships I did throughout college than I did in many of my journalism classes (sorry, school!)–there’s just nothing like getting into an office and diving right in to the hard work to help you realize if the field you’re interested in is the one for you! We love opening up our office to an editorial intern every semester, especially in the summer (one of our busiest seasons). Here’s what we’re looking for in a summer intern this year!

– An undergraduate student who can commit to working approximately 20-25 hours a week in June and July. We would ideally love someone who could start in late May and stay into August, as well, for a total of about 10 weeks.
SOMEONE WHO LOVES WEDDINGS. More than anything else, we want to work with someone who loves weddings and has a KEEN familiarity with weddings, wedding trends, the wedding industry, and the wedding publishing industry. A deep love for the South is important, too!
– A great work ethic is super important to us, as well as someone who loves to learn, can work and problem solve independently, is very responsible, and is a self-starter.
Strong writing abilities and firm grasp on grammar. Familiarity with Photoshop, InDesign, and WordPress would be a bonus.

Every Southern Weddings internship is a bit different, but here are some of the things you can expect to experience:
– Sitting in on and contributing to weekly staff meetings and brainstorming sessions
– Learning the basics of working with a WordPress blog and the Adobe Creative Suite
– Writing a post on the blog and/or copy for the magazine
– Researching images and information for features
– Researching, requesting, and tracking products for editorial shoots
– Assisting on site at editorial shoots
– Building portfolios on the SW site
– Assisting with our social media accounts
– Getting a firsthand view of how a bustling magazine, blog, shop, and small business run with a small staff of women

Sound like something you’re interested in? Please fill out this form by Thursday, March 24 at 11:59pm. Please let us know in the comments if you have any questions. Please do not email your application to us or email us to confirm receipt. We will be in touch with applicants who we think might be a good fit within two weeks of March 24.

This position is unpaid, but we are happy to work with you to get college credit if that’s something your school offers. We know this will be a great learning opportunity! If chosen for the internship, we will need you to work in person at our Chapel Hill office, but any college student who can get themselves to Chapel Hill for the summer is eligible to apply.

We can’t wait to hear from y’all!!

Hi Lisa and everyone at SW! I have been so looking forward to applying for the summer internship position for 2016! However, I am currently studying abroad in Italy and am traveling this week away from my computer. I therefore do not have access to my résumé and writing samples for the time being. If there is anyway for me to still apply and send those remaining documents a few days after the deadline I would be so appreciative. Please let me know if this is a possibility! Thank you in advance for your time and consideration! Looking forward to hearing from y’all!
    All the best,
    Rachel

Hi Rachel! You’re welcome to still apply, and then email me the documents separately as soon as possible ([email protected]). Have a great time traveling! :)

Hello Lisa and the Southern Weddings ladies!

I am trying to submit my application and it says that the file size of my writing sample is too large. It is a one page PDF yet I am unable to upload it. Thank you in advance for your help with this troubleshooting issue.

    Warmly,
    Emily Hope

Hi Emily Hope! Sorry for that inconvenience–I’m not sure why it won’t upload. Please feel free to email your writing sample to me ([email protected]) and submit your application form without it. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I just wanted to let you all know how much I appreciate you opening this to “guys and gals.” It really warms my heart, honestly! So thanks from a girl who very much only wants equality in the world <3

Hello! Just a quick question — I know that the post clearly states “undergraduate students,” but are are graduate students currently enrolled in writing/journalism programs (that count magazine internships for credit) allowed to apply? Thank you!

I wish your office was closer to Mobile Alabama. I would love to volunteer my time working with your magazine. Sounds like a great learning opportunity.

I was wondering if everyone who applied will be hearing back from y’all or just the lucky applicant who gets the internship!
