My Virginia roots give me a soft spot for pretty Old Dominion weddings. When I realized that Kristen and Patrick’s peony-filled wedding day took place less than an hour from my hometown, I knew I was going to love it, and I was right! Spring in Northern Virginia is positively dreamy, and they took advantage of the season to the fullest with a romantic, outdoor ceremony, followed by an elegant reception. I love the way they brought family into so many aspects of the day, especially the deeply personal way Kristen’s uncle officiated the ceremony, the engagement ring Kristen wears that has been in Patrick’s family for over 100 years, and even the groom’s cake that Patrick’s relatives drove down to Virginia from Ohio!

Thank you to Rachel May for sharing Kristen and Patrick’s wedding with us!

How Patrick and I met is quite different than most couples. The story of us meeting began before we were even born! Patrick’s mom and my father were high school sweethearts. Although they never married, they remained friends, and my father was still very close to her family members. A few summers ago, Patrick’s uncle invited me to a happy hour to hang out with him and his nephews at a local restaurant. It didn’t take long, after a round of hangman and a drink, I knew there was something special between Patrick and I.

Describe your wedding flowers. BEAUTIFUL! For our wedding, we wanted very romantic, full and lush flowers. Our florist, Morgan from Petals and Hedges, made my vision come true! The colors that I chose for our flowers were varying shades of pink and corals and cream. We incorporated Juliet roses, ranunculus, poppies, coral charm peonies, sweet peas, and hydrangeas, which were accented with dusty miller to create our bouquets, centerpieces and ceremony pieces.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Patrick and I chose to not have a first look. I think first looks capture some of the best photos, but we are very traditional, so we opted to forgo the first look. I wanted Patrick to see me for the first time when I was coming down the aisle.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? No, we did not write our own vows. My uncle married us. He delivered the most heartfelt ceremony and made it extremely personal. He was even able to make me feel as if my grandmother, his mother, was still with us and watching over us as we said our vows.

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My something borrowed was a bracelet from my mother. My something blue was my dear friend’s late grandmother’s handkerchief. My something old was my engagement ring–my ring was my husband’s late grandmother’s ring, which has been in the family for over 100 years. I will someday pass it down to our future child or grandchild. My something new was my wedding day earrings and necklace that my mother bought for me.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Gosh! I have so many favorite details but I would have to say one of our favorites were my flowers. I had several meetings with Petals and Hedges conveying my ideas and how I wanted them to look and feel. I had been collecting mercury glass vases/votives for about a year and Morgan was able to incorporate all of my pieces. I was very happy that she completely understood and delivered my vision. A second favorite of mine would most likely be the donut truck we hired to surprise our guests for a late night snack during the dance party! Mama’s Donut Bites was a huge hit with our guests.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We had a groom’s cake. My father-in-law is from Ohio, so my husband is a HUGE Ohio State Buckeyes fan. Patrick’s aunt and cousin personally drove the groom’s cake all the way from Ohio. The cake was from my husband’s family’s favorite bakery, Resch’s Bakery in Columbus. To make the cake especially for Patrick, Patrick’s mother called the bakery to ask if they could add sprinkles to the batter to make the cake a funfetti cake. The cake was decorated with buckeyes and his alma mater, the University of South Florida.

Tell us all about the proposal! The story of the proposal is quite funny! Patrick originally planned to propose the day after Christmas. But, my uncle surprised everyone with a Christmas Eve proposal to his girlfriend! Patrick let a few weeks pass (so that he wasn’t stealing anyone’s thunder) and on MLK weekend, he decided it was time, so he popped out of bed early to make breakfast. I thought it was odd, but I continued to sleep and enjoy my lazy Sunday morning. An hour or so later, I heard him coming up the stairs. After asking what all that noise was about, he walked into the room with a tray of homemade eggs benedict to eat and mimosas for us to drink. As I started to eat my breakfast, he asked me to butter him an english muffin (he’s not an eggs benedict fan). As I lifted the top of the butter dish, there was my beautiful engagement ring!
When did y’all get married? May 3, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 150
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. Oh boy! Where do I begin about finding my wedding dress…what an adventure that was. Patrick and I had a 15 month engagement, so around the one-year mark, I decided to go to a sample sale in Alexandria, Virginia to browse wedding gowns. While my mom and I were at the bridal shop, I tried on a bunch of wedding gowns and eventually, I settled on my first gown. Yes, I said first gown. I was never 100% about the dress–every day, I fretted over my dress decision and if I made the right choice. After trying the dress on again, at my first fitting, I had a meltdown. I literally was on the floor of the dress shop floor crying–crying because it wasn’t my dress and crying because I had made a mistake and felt horrible for my mother (I should have been on one of those bridal shows on TV! Oh my goodness, if those dressing room walls could talk!). After a few glasses of wine, my mom, maid of honor and I ran to another local bridal shop, as a last hope of finding “the one.” The shop was closing within the hour, so I picked out a few, ran into the dressing room and started trying them on. I tried on two, with no luck. I began to panic and then I tried on one last one. My facial expression completely changed. I was smiling and I was COMFORTABLE–it was everything my first dress wasn’t. So all in all, I ended up with a dress that I loved, but I sure had a lot of bumps along the way!
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We chose to have Mark 10: 6-9 and Colossians 3:12-17 read at our wedding ceremony.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. While the guests were seated, Patrick and I chose the harpist to play ” In the Garden.” I selected this song because it reminded me of my Grandmother, “MawMaw,” and I thought it was a perfect fit for getting married in the garden at Whitehall. We also selected a song to be played in between are two readings. We chose “For the Beauty of the Earth,” which also has sentimental meaning to me because every Christmas when I was growing up, my uncle and I would watch Little Women. I loved the wedding scene where they danced at the wedding while singing “For the Beauty of the Earth.”
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. DELICIOUS! I’ve been getting my birthday cakes from Edible Incredibles, in Reston, Virginia for years, so it was a no-brainer where I would get my wedding cake from! We had a four-tiered cake of lemon with buttercream filling and vanilla with a raspberry filling, topped with buttercream! The design of the cake was simple–it was a pink ombre cake with a pink bottom layer that gradually became ivory on top. Our florist had cascading sweet peas and poppies strategically placed over the tiers.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? My biggest challenge was stressing over small things. I really tried to relax and enjoy the planning journey, but it was extremely difficult for me. I finally relaxed when I saw Patrick waiting for me at the end of the aisle and I knew that everything would be perfect and wonderful.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $50,000-$75,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? We had so many wonderful vendors, but Rachel May had to be one of the best decisions that we made. Right from the beginning, Rachel and I connected at Starbucks, where we first met. I left that meeting knowing I had found the right fit for my wedding photographer and I couldn’t wait to work with her. People always say that your wedding will be a blur, and they were right. It’s wonderful to relive that wonderful night through Rachel’s pictures.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Other than marrying Patrick, I would have to say my uncle performing our wedding service. It meant so much to both of us to have someone we know perform our wedding ceremony. We wanted someone that knew us and who had watched our relationship blossom. My uncle was able to incorporate funny little things about both Patrick and I, but also deliver a message about what a marriage is all about.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? My advice to new brides is to enjoy the journey of planning this wonderful day! I found myself getting so caught up in the minutia, that I forgot to enjoy little moments along the way!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Patrick and I are looking forward to settling into our new home. We closed on our townhouse in Ashburn, Virginia two weeks after the wedding. We can’t wait to make our house into our home!

As one of Kristen’s bridesmaids some night say I’m biased, but I’ve been in/attended 8 weddings so far this year and it was by far the most beautiful and heartfelt. Not only are Rachel’s photographs gorgeous, she was an amazing presence that day. She calmed the brides nerves, managed rowdy groomsmen and even helped find lost bouttonieres. She is a gem!

Amy + Bryan, Balitmore natives, might have a few Northern tendencies in their blood, but their wedding was full-on Southern. The two decided to tie the knot in Charleston, where Bryan surprised Amy with a getaway and a proposal, so there was plenty of reason to adopt the beautiful city as their own personal sanctuary. I adore that Amy + Bryan decided to go traditional on a few things — the ceremony music and the white cake (with stunning flowers!), for instance — but added their own twist with hot pink invitations and retro marquee signage. But these are all teeny details compared to the father-daughter dance. Amy’s dad wrote the song for their dance, recorded the vocals with Amy’s mom and played it back at the reception so the two could still dance together. How amazing!!

As Kristin would say, we’re sending Paige Winn a big squeeze for sharing this day with us.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress.
I had a hard time deciding on a wedding dress — I had serious love for a few different dresses. Ultimately, my wedding dress had every component that I wanted. It was the prettiest dress that I had ever seen or put on my body. That was such a happy day and I still love it so much.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? We did a little behind-the-door chat. It was actually pretty emotional, and luckily Paige Winn still made our pictures look somewhat attractive! It was so nice to hear Bryan’s voice for a minute prior to our wedding.

Stems created the most gorgeous, beautiful arrangements. There are pictures of me crying when seeing my flowers for the first time! They were pink, girly, romantic, soft, colorful, and playful – just all around gorgeous. All of the bridesmaids had variations of hot pink, white, and light pink flowers with each of the bouquets wrapped in different shades of pink ribbons. My flower girl wore a flower halo that she donned proudly and looked so beautiful in. My bouquet was an amazing display of girly pink wonderfulness, wrapped in a piece of lace ribbon from my mom’s wedding dress. The guys all had white flowers wrapped in pink ribbon, and they looked so handsome wearing them. There were displays of single flower arrangements on the tables in antique containers, and mixes of color blocked arrangements on other tables. It was fab!

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?
Possibly my five-year-old niece telling me, “When the wedding comes, the wedding comes.” I’m still trying to dissect that deep advice. Another memorable moment was the look on my future husband’s face as I walked down the aisle. So incredible.

For my walk down the aisle, I chose Canon in D, a song that I had always envisioned myself walking down the aisle to; I think it is the most beautiful classical song. Way to go Bach! We decided on Brad Paisley’s “Then” for our first dance. We were debating some other songs for our first dance, and then this one sort of took me by surprise. I would hear it on the radio, and it would make me cry and think of our wedding day. I love when he talks about taking his fiancé to the place where he first met her to propose. Even though Charleston was not where we met, it was where we got engaged and the place where we were going to say our vows. It just felt right. My dad wrote me a song for our father-daughter dance. My mom and dad sung it and recorded it together so that we could play it at the wedding and my dad and I could still dance together. It was so sentimental, and more special than any other song I would have found.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding?
We went about as Southern as us Northerners could possibly get, from the all-you-can-eat Sticky Fingers sweet potato casserole and pulled pork at our rehearsal dinner, to the shrimp and grits and hush puppies at our reception. We had stations, farmhouse tables, vintage china, and mint julep containers for flowers. We wanted it to feel like you were in the South, and wanted it to just be really unique and fun.

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding?
Stay calm and be patient and polite. Also, know that it is all going to be worth it, and that the day will be better than you could have ever imagined. Have FUN. Lastly, if  at all possible, hire a wedding planner.

Our wedding cake was a four-tier cake with cascading ombre flowers ranging from hot pink to white. Each layer had a different kind of frosting. On the top of our cake were two little hand crafted clay birds. It was almost too beautiful to eat!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was:
I think it would have to be our sparkler exit. We couldn’t believe our wedding was ending, but all of our friends and family were lined up with sparklers waiting for us to leave. As we were leaving, fireworks were going off for the RiverDogs baseball team. It was magical. We could feel the love from everyone, and loved exiting into an old fashioned London black cab. We would probably pay good money to be in that moment one more time.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story.
We met in the huge Baltimore blizzard of 2010 after a few too many drinks. We randomly met each other in the street and had an instant connection, sort of a “right place at the right time” situation. We then went sledding at 3 a.m.! Our first official date came a few days later at my favorite Mexican Restaurant. The rest is history.

Tell us all about the proposal!
The proposal took place in Charleston. I thought that we were taking a little trip to Connecticut to visit Bryan’s family. Literally at the gate for Charleston, Bryan jokingly asked me if I wanted to go there instead. I said that I did, and he told me to look at my boarding pass. After realizing that he had planned a surprise trip, I asked him if he was going to propose (sorry Bryan!). He told me that he wasn’t, and the next thing I knew we were on our way. After a brief shopping trip on King’s Street for shoes that were not Uggs and clothes that were not sweaters, we made our way to our hotel room. Bryan had a big “Will you marry me?” sign hung on the wall and had flowers all around our hotel room. Then he was down on one knee! I was so shocked!

When did y’all get married? April 12, 2013

How many friends, family, and loved ones attended your wedding?
120

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony?
E.E. Cummings- I carry your heart. 1 Corinthians 13. Each read by our aunts.

Did you have something borrowed, something blue, and something new? My something blue was my “I Do” stickers on the bottom of my shoes – a must have! My something new was my wedding dress, and something borrowed was the lace from my mom’s wedding dress.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?
The distance and the travel. Thank goodness for the amazing Lizz Akerman at Southern Protocol. She made the process easy, but it was still challenging being so many miles away and communicating via phone and email.

What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding?
Lizz Akerman at Southern Protocol. She gets the job done and is so amazing and talented at what she does. We could not have done any of it without her. We are also a little bit obsessed with Paige Winn, and happen to adore Anne Bowen at Stems, Scotti Kline, and Sarah Murdoch at 428 Main.

What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future?
We are looking forward to buying our first house at some point in time and having children, and maybe getting a golden doodle. We’re also going to continue to have more adventures that begin with an idea as crazy as two kids from Baltimore getting married at a plantation in the South. Lastly, we are looking forward to just spending time with our amazing families and with each other.

Yippee!! Just a few more weeks until V5 arrives!

Erin + Brian might have shared their first kiss on a fifth grade class field trip to the planetarium, but they had no idea they would reconnect years later. Brian even brought Erin back to the same planetarium to get down on one knee and ask her to marry him. (Aww!) Though the two were so ready to get married that they considered tying the knot at city hall, they stuck it out and used their seven-month engagement to create a barn-side wedding full of DIY details and family heirlooms. We love the combination of soft cotton and succulent plants throughout their big day and the fun projection they played against their tent at the reception. Big thanks to Morgan Trinker for sharing this one with us!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. My mom and I planned an entire weekend in Birmingham to find my dress and had dress fittings scheduled at 3 different stores. I knew what type of dress I was looking for, so that helped as we walked into our first appointment at The White Room. We were both shocked when I picked the second dress I tried on. I put on a third dress, but I was dying to put the second one back on. That was the easiest part of planning our wedding!
Did you decide to do a “first look”? We did not do a first look. It was very important to Brian that we see each other for the first time as I was walking down the aisle. The expression on his face as I was walking toward him was so worth the wait.

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We had two groomsmen and two bridesmaids read a passage from “This Momentary Marriage” by John Piper as Brian and I “planted” a tree. They read pages 55-57. It was long, but filled with great words every new couple should hear!
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. We had string instruments and a pianist playing for the ceremony. It was beautiful! I walked down the aisle to “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri and walked back up the aisle to “Love Story” by Taylor Swift. Our first dance was to”You and I” by Michael Buble

One of my favorite Southern details from the wedding was the actual venue! Hampstead Farms was the perfect location to celebrate our marriage. I loved how naturally beautiful the growing fruits, vegetables, and flowers looked around our tent, and the gorgeous red barn was the perfect background to every photo. I am also obsessed with crafting and creating, so I love that many Southern weddings now include DIY aspects, which helped me add personal details to our big day. I handmade our save-the-dates, invitations and RSVP cards using paper from Paper Source and custom made stamps from Antiquaria. I also put together the aisle markers using burlap bows and twig wreaths, made the ring bearer pillow, and put together the wedding favors with the help of incredible friends and family. My sweet groom and his brother also made the tree candle holders which were used on the reception tables. Throughout our engagement, I was collecting lanterns and cake plates. I also had many sentimental items used that day, like my baby bonnet which was wrapped around my bouquet, and my grandmother’s doilies, which were used on several different tables.

I am terrible when it comes to flower names, but that’s where pinterest and my incredible florist came in handy. I showed them several pictures of succulents, garden roses, and ranunculus, and asked them to make wild bouquets with similar flowers and add lots of greenery. I was blown away! We had a great mix of succulents, lambs ear (my favorite), branches, and several other flowers. They also built our centerpiece flower boxes for the reception, and they turned out even better than I imagined!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert: We actually had five cakes and some Greek desserts. Peggy McKinney made our two-tiered white wedding cake with buttercream frosting, and our one-tiered cakes in peanut butter fudge, strawberry, and key lime. My Aunt Jeana made her homemade pineapple upside down cake (Brian’s favorite). Brian’s mother (who is Greek) and some of the Greek women from church made some other desserts like traditional wedding cookies and baklava.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. In the fifth grade, my family decided to send me to Forest Avenue Academic Magnet School. I was assigned to Mrs. Rodopoulos’ class which just so happens to be the same class Brian was in that year. I didn’t notice Brian right away — It wasn’t until a little friend of mine leaned over in math class one day and asked if I liked Brian as a boyfriend. I said no at first, but once I found out that Brian liked me, I quickly changed my mind! We became boyfriend/girlfriend that day and permanent four-square buddies. Later on that year, our class took a fieldtrip right down the street to the Gayle Planetarium. I was so excited to sit next to Brian and watch the show. Finally, right before the show was over, Brian planted a big kiss on my left temple, and HARD! It almost knocked me out of my seat! We walked around Oak Park after the show with the rest of the class, and I could not stop smiling. My first kiss! :) We lost touch after middle school, but we would run into each other occasionally throughout high school and college. In December of 2010, Brian texted me saying, “I had a dream that we went on a date last night.” I had no idea who it was because I didn’t have Brian’s number in my phone anymore. We talked back and forth for a while until I finally said yes to a date. A few nights later, Brian pulled up to my house having no idea what to expect of the night. I was shocked at how handsome Brian had become, and even more shocked at how perfectly that night went. We laughed a lot, talked about the past, and couldn’t believe that after all this time, we were hanging out again. We have been inseparable ever since then.
Describe the proposal. (From the groom) As Erin was getting ready for a “family photo shoot” with her grandmother, a vintage Studebaker pulled up at the front of the house. A chauffeur knocked on the door and whisked Erin away to the Gayle Planetarium, where I first kissed her 14 years ago. I heard the car door shut and my heart stopped. What were my lines? Where is the ring? She found her way to me and my heart began beating hard. “It’s for her, it’s always been for her,” I thought, “Every beat, every breath. I need this in my life forever.” I dropped to one knee and said, “Under these stars is where I first kissed you, and under these stars is where I want to start the rest of our lives.” It was as easy as that. We took our old seats and just stared at the stars reminiscing on things past and things to come.
In what month did you get married? September
How many guests attended your wedding? About 125
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Patience! Brian and I were so ready to be married that our 7 month engagement felt more like 2 years. We mentioned city hall several times during our engagement, but we stuck it out and it was so worth the wait. Having our wonderful family and friends there to celebrate the beginning of our lives together was the best part of our wedding day.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Our photographer! Our wedding pictures are the only thing we get to physically keep from that day, and I couldn’t have asked for a better person to capture those sweet moments. Morgan Trinker is creative, talented, and just a genuinely happy person to be around. I highly recommend her to any bride!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Walking down the aisle. The look on Brian’s face was more than words could ever describe. The love he feels for me and shows me every single day was displayed in front of all of our family and friends in that moment. It felt like we were the only two people there, and I couldn’t stop looking at him. All of time, money, planning and crafting. that went into the wedding doesn’t even compare to that one moment that we will remember for the rest of our lives.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Enjoy it. The planning process can be so tedious at times, but some of the sweetest moments come during your engagement. The bridal showers, engagement parties, and gifts from family and friends are such a fun part of planning a wedding. Live in the moment and celebrate this exciting time with the people who mean the most to you.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? Buying a house! We are currently looking for our first home together, which is both exciting and exhausting at the same time. We are eager to find a place of our own and start our own little family down the road.
