I am pretty sure that today’s bride, Corinne, and I are wedding soul sisters–a spring date, a church ceremony, a classic getaway car, snazzy signature cocktails, and blush blooms galore? Yes please to all of the above! While even the smallest details (hello, gorgeous escort card board!) can contribute to the moments you’ll remember from your wedding day, I love the way Corinne and Greg were also sure to plan a few particularly special opportunities for the two of them to celebrate together, like their post-ceremony getaway car ride and the private last dance they shared to close out their reception. That commitment to creating intentional moments has even carried over into their newlywed life–one of Corinne and Greg’s favorite activities is hosting dinners on the porch of their new Atlanta townhouse!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I decided to take a lunch break to look at dresses one day. I ended up finding one that I absolutely loved, but I knew I couldn’t make a decision without consulting my mom. I tried on a few more dresses at boutiques in Atlanta, but nothing could quite live up to the delicate lace and silk organza of the dress at Nitsa’s in Winston-Salem. The store was really accommodating and actually sent the dress to their Charlotte location for me. I tried it on one more time and knew it was the one!

I had seen pictures of beautiful white and blush bouquets on Southern Weddings that I used as inspiration for our florist! We included white peonies, ranunculus, and David Austin roses in all of the bridesmaid bouquets, all tied up with hand-dyed silk ribbon. My bouquet had a special touch of white lilac and a jeweled piece from my mom’s wedding bouquet.

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? We had a traditional Catholic ceremony that started at 2 P.M., a bit earlier than most weddings! We decided to wait until the ceremony so that we could have that special moment of seeing each other for the first time as the church doors opened.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did not write our own vows. We thought the traditional ones were just as meaningful, though!

One of our favorite details of the day was the vintage car that we drove away from the church in. Since we had the “Just Married” sign on the back, people cheered and honked as we drove to the reception!

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? St. Pius X in Greensboro is a beautiful church and our family’s parish. We chose the Greensboro Country Club for our reception venue because of their great service, beautiful ballroom, and outdoor space for cocktail hour!

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The biggest challenge we ran into was planning from afar. Greg and I had both just moved to Atlanta and it was difficult for us to break away from our new jobs to make trips up to NC. We had great vendors who made it easier, and my mom did a good amount of the planning remotely!

Greg and I are huge fans of dessert! We had a simple, four-tiered cake with chocolate (for him), lemon (for me), and traditional almond. We included our custom monogram from the invitation suite in gold on the third layer and decorated it with fresh flowers. It was delicious!

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Greg and I danced the night away at our reception, and before we exited, we had one last dance, just the two of us. The band played Ray LaMontagne’s “You Are The Best Thing” for us. It was such a special way to close out the best day of our lives!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Greg and I met at our alma mater, Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. Two of our best friends (who are now married as well) set us up on a blind date for homecoming weekend! We dated long distance for four more years as Greg finished up school in Charlottesville and I worked in Georgia and North Carolina.
Tell us all about the proposal! We met my sister and brother-in-law at my family’s home one weekend when my parents were out of town. We love to spend time in our hometown together and we had plans to eat at all of our favorite restaurants and play golf that day. My parents have a small boat, so we all decided go for a ride before dinner that night. Greg got down on one knee at the dock on the way down to the lake. To my surprise, my family and Greg’s then appeared around the corner to pick us up and kick off the celebration!
When did y’all get married? April 23, 2016
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 185
How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? Once Greg and I were both in Atlanta, we began pre-marital counseling with our local Catholic church. While we had been dating for a few years before getting engaged, the counseling provided a framework to discuss important aspects of our relationship.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? We were absolutely thrilled to have Graham Terhune Photography as part of our wedding. Graham and his wife, Samantha, are such professionals and did a great job documenting the day and making us feel comfortable. We were also so happy to have our family help us make the welcome bags for our guests! Greg’s aunt made her famous “butter crunch” toffee and my sister made her signature decorated sugar cookies. We loved sharing a piece of both our families in those bags.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Our advice for wedding planning is to not sweat the details! Our priest ended up getting sick and not being able to make it to the wedding (thankfully, he has recovered and is doing better). We never expected such a big twist in our plans, but at the end of the day, nothing is more important than being surrounded by your closest family and friends on the day you get to marry your best friend!
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? We are living in Atlanta for the next few years as Greg finishes up his training. We recently bought a townhouse and have loved hosting our friends and family for dinners on the deck! We are looking forward to getting to know the city better and taking trips as a married couple!

Getting married in the same church where your parents did is such a sweet way to honor your family, but that’s not the only reason I am smitten with Blythe and Ryan’s wedding! We are wedding date twins (BDK and I were also married on December 13!), and their ceremony was held at my very favorite church! I grew up attending the amazing Cathedral in downtown Mobile, and I not-so-secretly wish BDK and I had tied the knot there. The columns alone will make you weak in the knees! Add a classic lace Lela Rose gown, stunning all-white blooms, and a yummy menu at the Mobile Country Club, and you’ve just jumped onto the list of my favorite weddings we’ve featured!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. It was our sophomore year at Alabama and I was on my way home for the weekend when I got a call from my friend, begging me to turn around and come back to Tuscaloosa, so I did! That night, we went to dinner with a girl who had just transferred from Georgia and did not know many people. After dinner, we went to to DKE house to hang out and meet her boyfriend and his roommate, Ryan. Little did I know, Ryan and I would end up getting married five years later!

I flew to Birmingham one weekend to meet with our planners, and stopped by Ivory and White to look at dresses. I had seen a Lela Rose dress online that I liked, but I did not know how it would look in person. I tried it on and LOVED it, but then I tried on another Lela Rose dress and loved that one too!! One was more classic and the other was a little edgy, and in the end, I decided to go with the more classic dress.

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? We did not! Ryan is very superstitious, so the first time we saw each other was at the altar!

I grew up Catholic and always wanted to get married in the Cathedral downtown. It is such a beautiful church and my parents were married there years before on December 12, so our anniversaries are a day apart! We are members at the Country Club of Mobile, so it was a natural choice for our reception. We loved that the back room opened up to the outdoors!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The wedding party took a trolley ride from the church to the reception, and it was so much fun having everyone together!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? All of the food served was inspired by the South! From the grilled oysters, to the boom boom shrimp, to the Chrissy’s, to the groom’s cake (complete with a Texas flag)!, we loved it all!

Tell us all about the proposal! I hate New Years Eve–I think it is so overrated, and I would much rather stay at home and have pizza and wine! Ryan made reservations for us at a restaurant called Steele near my apartment, and we planned to meet his parents and friends for drinks beforehand at the Katy Trail Icehouse. For some reason, Ryan wanted to walk there on the trail–he usually never wants to walk! When we got to the trail, I saw candles lit and roses all over the stairs leading up to the trail. I started walking right past it (thinking, “Oh great, someone’s getting engaged and it’s not me–again!). Then, Ryan grabbed me, got on his knee, and popped the question. Of course, I said yes! We then headed to the Icehouse, where all of our friends and family were there to celebrate! It was such a special night and I will never forget it!

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? I live in Dallas and the wedding was in Mobile, so it was very hard to not be there and plan everything in person!

If there’s one thing I’ve learned while choosing details for my own wedding, it’s that when in doubt, I should stick to the classics. There’s a reason things like lace wedding gowns, white tiered cakes, and “Just Married” getaway car signs never go out of style–they have already stood the test of time. I would’t be surprised if Shannon and Andrew heeded this advice as they planned their Maryland wedding, with the help of our Blue Ribbon Vendor, A. Dominick Events, and as a result, I imagine they’ll still love everything about their special day when they’re showing these pictures to their future grandchildren!

I was supposed to meet Andrew in San Francisco for Valentine’s Day weekend, but was snowed in and all the flights were canceled. My mom and I decided last minute to look at some wedding dresses instead. There was a Romona Keveza trunk show going on at the Nordstrom Bridal Boutique in Tyson’s Corner. My mom begged me to “humor her” and try on a dress which seemed too old fashioned for my taste on the hanger. However, when I tried it on, I immediately fell in love. I went back three times that weekend to try the dress on again. It was such a silver lining to the canceled California trip!

Describe your wedding flowers. I carried a beautiful, naturally shaped bouquet that was slightly untamed. It included café au lait dahlias, David Austin garden roses, Queen Anne’s lace, fresh herbs, and white passion flower vine. The slightly wilder bouquet complemented my very traditional wedding dress. Shawn and her team at Beehive Events hit it out of the park!

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? No, we wanted to keep it traditional. The groom seeing his bride for the first time walking down the aisle is always one of my favorite moments of a wedding.
What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? We were married at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, a church that has special significance to both of our families. Andrew’s mother’s family and my father’s family both attended the church growing up.

After the priest announced us as husband and wife, we stood on the altar facing the crowd for a few moments before we processed out of the church. We just took it all in–the incredible commitment of marriage we had just made, and the outpour of applause and cheers from family and friends. There was so much love and joy in that church, and I will never forget that moment.

What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? A. Dominick and her team went above and beyond to execute our vision. They were organized, thorough, experienced, and so much fun to work with. They were great advisors, never making decisions for us, but rather, helping us to make the decisions. They kept us on schedule throughout the planning process and left no stone unturned. On the day of the wedding, I was so relaxed. Aimee and her team made our wedding more special than I could have ever imagined.

Kendall’s Cakes created a beautiful “cake bar” for us with an assortment of small white cakes, half filled with white chocolate raspberry cake, the other half with key lime cake. Each one was decorated simply with white frosting. One was designed to look like the buttons and bow on the back of my wedding dress. They stood on vintage crystal cake stands I had borrowed from family members. It was a stunning (and delicious) display!

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Our first dance was to Ray LaMontagne’s “You Are the Best Thing.” It has a good pace (not too slow, not too fast), was soulful, and the lyrics really spoke to our relationship. The dancing at our wedding was so much fun that my dad (who is otherwise very frugal) paid the band to keep playing!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Pleasant Pops, one of our favorite local food trucks, brought a push cart outside the dance floor. We had four different flavors of popsicles, including Andrew’s favorite, New Orleans Iced Coffee. It was a great way to cool down after all that dancing!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met through mutual friends at a bar the night before Thanksgiving in 2010. Although we had grown up in the same area and had known of each other, we had never officially met. There was an immediate connection. That first night, we talked for hours about everything from education to family. We saw each other one more time that weekend and exchanged phone numbers, but did not know when we would see each other again, since I was living in New York City at the time. Shortly thereafter, Andrew called me to tell me he was going to be visiting a friend in NYC and asked me to dinner. We went on our first dinner date at a little italian restaurant in Nolita. We had such a great time, we met for brunch the next day and had dinner that night as well. We joke that we had our first, second, and third dates all within 24 hours! For the next few months, we kept Amtrak in business traveling between NYC and DC to see one another.
Tell us all about the proposal! Andrew planned a dinner date under the guise of celebrating “the beginning of the school year.” I had just spent the week setting up my classroom, attending teacher development, and finalizing my first week of school plans. I was exhausted, but thrilled to have an easy, early dinner with Andrew to look forward to. We went to one of my favorite restaurants in D.C., The Blue Duck Tavern. For reasons unclear to me at the time, he had made the reservation at 5 p.m., so I was sure to give him a hard time about such an early dinner. After the meal, we took a sunset walk by the Potomac River and ended up at the Kennedy Center. We walked to the terrace, which has a gorgeous view of the monuments. Somehow, we were the only people there, which is a rarity in Washington. That is when he proposed. It was an incredible moment! He was so nervous that he put the ring on the wrong hand, which was a great moment of levity. Then, we went to his cousin’s restaurant, Beuchert’s Saloon, where all of our family had been waiting. It was such a wonderful night!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We had dinner stations instead of a sit-down meal, and one of the stations was called “Southern Comfort.” It included mini pulled pork sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes, and watermelon salad.
How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? We went to a series of marriage preparation classes through our church with a few other engaged couples. We talked about everything from finances to family. It was incredibly helpful.
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? My aunt made bouquets of baby’s breath for the flower girls. We had lots of little girls in the wedding, and knew spending money on fancy bouquets for them would not be worth it. My sister-in-law also made the ribbon wands that were used for our send-off as we exited the church.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Andrew was offered a job in San Francisco, so we are looking forward to starting an adventure together on the West Coast. While we are sad to leave our family and friends in D.C., it will be a great opportunity for us to explore another part of the country and grow even stronger as a couple.
