This is one of my favorite Details features we have ever posted on SW!  How gorgeous is this wedding!?  Photography by the amazing {Kate Benson}.  Thank you so much for sharing this stunning wedding with us, Kate!  For more of Kate’s work, be sure to visit her beautiful {blog}Stay tuned for Part II…

From Kate: Katie and Torsten reside in Phoenix, AZ. but had their wedding in Salt Lake City. Upon our initial meeting, Katie and I hit it right off.  I loved that her personality was so bright and cheerful and just instinctively knew her wedding would showcase that.  I also sensed that she was deeply and madly in love with Torsten, although I didn’t get to meet him until their engagement session. When I was finally able to photograph them (almost one year later), I didn’t have to do much work, their chemistry was amazing.  On the wedding day, one of the groomsmen pretty much summed up the wedding- It was Katies big day, something she had taken a lot of time and consideration into, and Torsten was lovingly there to see that every possible thing was done correctly and handled with care… not matter how many times she called him.  It was a beautiful day, full of color and excitement!

Check back shortly for Part II!

Hey thanks for the comments! Kate did an absolutely amazing job capturing everything throughout the day. For the person who wanted to know where the dresses were from…The pink one is from Cache, the yellow one is from Banana Republic and the orange one is from a bridal salon in St. Louis…will try to find out the manufactuor is. Thanks again. I will hire Kate again and again when we renew our vows:)

I love the dresses in different colors and styles!!! How did you manage to coordinate that with your maids?? Did you just tell them the color, or were you specific about exact shade/fabric/length? I’m thinking of doing something very similar, and now I see how great it can turn out!!

As far as the dresses go I sent the girls the three swatches of the fabric colors I wanted and told them I would prefer around knee length. We hashed it out over emails and over the phone since none of them lived in Arizona. We decided on who would wear what based on skin/hair color and personlaity and it worked out perfect. I loved it b/c then they could pick something that was really them and in a price point they were comfortable with and I think the colors just popped! I have seen this done with black before, but think it makes such a statement with the vibrant sunset/moroccan colors! Thanks for the feedback. It is fun to have a vision in your head and see it come to life and have people appreciate it! PS I am a wedding planner in Phoenix, so if anyone needs help let me know! Katie

Where are the shoes from? I am getting married in July and I would *love* to get them or something similar!

  50. avatar Katie, the bride reply

The shoes are from a place in Minnesota called Maudie McBrides. Small boutique in Minnesota not sure where she ordered them from but you could def look them up and contact them. They have amazing, unique stuff and I believe you can shop online with them.

Welcome back to Part II!  Congratulations, Maliena + Michael!

The weather was: Perfect. The skies were blue and brushed with clouds, and the sun broke through just as we were exchanging our vows.
Did you have a theme for your wedding? We wanted to embrace my Asian American heritage, so we chose a Cherry Blossom theme, but enhanced it with many orchids to give it a tropical flair as well.
What colors did you choose for your wedding? I found a bridesmaid dress I liked, and just went with it.  The colors were raspberry and banana
Describe your wedding flowers: Tons of orchids everywhere, we even had them glued on to birch branches to resemble cherry blossoms since the real thing was out of season.
Describe your wedding cake: A beautiful shimmering tower of pale yellow with handmade raspberry colored cherry blossoms. The flavors inside were amazing—raspberry champagne and mango mojito!
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Two things stand out…I surprised him with a chocolate groom’s cake in the shape of a piano reminiscent of the night he proposed, and the signature passed drinks at the reception appropriately named Maliena-tini’s and Michael-jito’s.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?
Our schedules…I was a senior resident working 80 hours a week and trying to plan a wedding!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?  Walking down the isle to my own wedding…no one else will ever be able to experience that but me.
Scariest moment?  Hearing our music cue for our first dance and realizing that we had to perform the waltz to a seated, quiet audience…the tension broke when they started cheering for us!
Funniest moment? The best man’s self-deprecating toast. Genuine, but absolutely hilarious.
What were your something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue items?  My great grandmother’s handkerchief, the rosary that was blessed in Avignon, France that Mike’s cousin gave me the night before the wedding, my best friends’ clutch, and of course blue lingerie
The most unexpected event on our wedding day was:  The tallest groomsmen swept me out of a crowd during the band’s break, and carried me to center stage, where Mike surprised me yet again with his rendition of “How Sweet It Is!”
Three adjectives that describe the day are:  exquisite, festive, and heartfelt
What advice would you give to someone planning their wedding?  Expect to double your budget…seriously.

I love the array of bright, colorful, pink flowers scattered all over the place and the dainty parasols hanging above the ceiling. The over-all ambiance of the place is festive and lively but with a touch of elegance and class. I especially loved the small piano cake, such a clever and exquisite idea!!!!

Off to Florida!

by in News on

The whole North Carolina SW team is off to Florida this morning (Kirstin, Rachel, Laura and myself) for a week of meetings, meetings, photoshoots, more photoshoots and a big wedding on Saturday to top it all off.  We’ll be getting together with the FL team on Thursday for dinner at the Casa de Casey (my house).  It’s going to be a great week of bonding and hopefully no rain on Saturday.  We are bringing our Flips and will be sure to capture all the action for the blog.  I am expecially excited about Saturday’s wedding.  The couple is near and dear to my heart.  I will be balling my eyes out as they say thier vows!  So, take care of the blog for us while we are gone.  We have some fantastic posts set up this week and look forward to sharing our FL adventures as they happen on Twitter and on the blog when we return.
