The Ocean Key Resort & Spa

by in on

Hi, y’all! The introduction of the Honey List has allowed us to travel to several fabulous Southern locations, with several more on the books for 2012! We’re excited to give you the inside scoop on some of the best honeymoon and vacation spots in the South, and today, we’re taking a trip to the Ocean Key Resort & Spa!

In December, my husband BDK and I celebrated our three year wedding anniversary! Three years sounds so long and so short all at the same time, you know? It’s been a crazy and super fun three years, and I am still so in love with my handsome husband. In celebration of our anniversary, we took a trip down to the Florida Keys for the weekend.

We stayed at the gorgeous Ocean Key Resort & Spa, and let me tell y’all, we were so thrilled with our stay. Upon checking in, we were walked by the kindest concierge to our colorful suite, and this was the view:

Need I go on? Yes, I must! Our room was amazing! Brightly-colored eclectic decor filled the wide open breezy room with the loveliest balcony with a view of the Gulf of Mexico. BDK was especially fond of the exposed beams on the super high ceilings.

The first night we were there, we decided to stay in and enjoy room service (one of my favorite hotel perks ever!). Mahi Mahi sandwich and sweet potato fries, yes please!! Everything tastes better when eaten in these lovely surroundings:

The next morning we decided to walk around Key West, and then head to the pool. Yes, this is really what their pool looks like!

With the central location of the resort, we were able to walk down to the Southernmost point, and see all the adorable little shops on Duval Street on the way there. We even spotted the Ernest Hemingway House!

We grabbed a bite to eat on our way back to the resort, then headed for the pool, only to realize that I had left my swim suit at home! Gah!

We were more than happy to skip some pool time, though, to have a treatment at the adorable Spa Terre! Again, we were greeted by the friendliest hostess and escorted back to a couple’s room. BDK thoroughly enjoyed his “sports massage,” while I chose something totally different, the Volcanic Earth Clay Ritual. It was so cool! They paint on clay that is used to detoxify your skin, and then after washing that off, the therapist does a traditional Balinese massage. I’m feeling more relaxed just writing about it!

After our treatments, we headed back to our room to get gussied up for dinner. We headed down to Hot Tin Roof where we were seated on the gorgeous balcony. Our waiter was the loveliest man, and the chef even sent out a few yummy samples for us to try before we made our selections. We chose a delicious meal for two with steak, prawn, and the most divine mac and cheese with crab meat. We topped off our meal with – of course – key lime pie! You know, when in Rome, y’all!

If you’re looking for a honeymoon destination with relaxation by day, and fun parties by night, the Florida Keys are the place! And Ocean Key Resort & Spa definitely tops my list of resorts in the Keys. Their warm and welcoming employees and casually luxurious atmosphere make for the perfect combination! Clearly, we were happy to be there:

I am planning a honeymoon to S. Florida (Sanibel Island) and then renting a convertible to drive across and then down US 1 to Key West with my wonderful husband-to-be! I would love some recommendations of things y’all did and any good hidden must-go-to spots. Restaurant, spa, and adventure recommendations are totally welcome! We are so excited by our honeymoon plans but have yet to seem to hammer out all the details!

      Hi Joanna!

Spa Terre was amazing! I would definitely recommend it! The Balinese treatment was so different and awesome, and my husband LOVED his massage. Hot Tin Roof was the restaurant we ate at while at the resort and it was divine! The entire dinner was amazing. I would must-visits are Sloppy Joe’s, Hog’s Breath Saloon, and Señor Frogs. Those are some of the fun little Key West restaurants that are always neat to stop at. We were not able to go, but I have heard that the lighthouse is super cool as well. And be sure to bring comfy shoes! Duval Street is fun to walk around on, but your feet will def feel it!

Have fun, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding!! Let me know If I can send any recs.

      xo, Marissa

Marissa: Thanks for the tips! We are soo excited to go to Key West. Neither of us have been there and I can’t wait for warm FL weather and palm trees. I was curious if there was a Southern Wedding readers discount? We think we might book at Ocean Key Resort. It looks so luxe and yet so hospitable. I love that about the south!

Hello from Australia – ! we actually honeymooned in Orlando ! We did the theme parks but also managed some romantic dinners (complete with fireworks) and a balloon ride. It was spectacular – wish we could come visit every year !
