If you’re looking for Southern inspiration, look no farther than Alexis + Thad’s Kentucky wedding at the historic Locust Grove plantation, courtesy of Todd Nichols Photography.  The SW girls love how Alexis, in true Southern fashion, paired hot pink heels with her lacy Casablanca gown.  The bridesmaids’ deep blue J. Crew frocks remind us that navy is a great (and more summery!) alternative to basic black, and the perfect complement to bright pink bouquets, courtesy of Flowersong Designs.

How did the two of you meet?  Tell us your story.  We met during college through mutual friends.  I am originally from North Carolina but went to college at the University of Kentucky where I met several of Thad’s hometown friends.  Thad and I began dating after we had known each other for about a year.
Describe the proposal.
My family was vacationing at Hilton Head Island, SC and has planned a day trip into Savannah, GA. Thad had decided to propose that same weekend, as it would mark our 6 year anniversary.  He had asked my father’s permission and they had planned out the day.  After sightseeing and eating at Paula Deen’s restaurant, Thad proposed in front of a monument in one of Savannah’s historical squares.
Three adjectives that describe the day are:
 Breathtaking, unforgettable and exciting!
What was the design inspiration for your wedding invitation?
The invitations had taupe and navy font on cream linen paper.  Historic Locust Grove inspired lots of the things for the day.
What was your favorite design element of your big day?
We loved the idea of having a casual yet elegant ceremony with Southern flair.  Our attendants did not wear traditional tuxes or bridesmaids dresses.  Instead, we opted for khaki suits with navy knee-length dresses and hot pink shoes.  Even I wore hot pink!  Our programs were old-fashioned parlor fans created with our monogram and program information.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was:
Celebrating the day with our closest family and friends, and dancing to a great band!
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I went shopping with my mother and sister; we wanted it to be an intimate event.  I knew I wanted something comfortable and elegant, but suitable for an outdoor wedding.  I tried on dresses for over four hours but kept coming back to the same dress.  I was very indecisive until I made my sister try on both dresses so that I could see them on someone else. When I finally put on my wedding dress and came out of the dressing room, everyone stopped and stared, and that is when I knew it was “the one.”

I love Emily.  A lot.  Why?  Because she not only picks the most beautiful weddings around for our blog but also occasionally slips in a wedding she knows I will absolutely love.  (As an admittedly picky traditionalist, it’s not always easy to please me, so this is a bigger challenge than you may think.)  What do I love about Annie + Sam’s Texas wedding from Sharon Nicole Photography?  THE CANDY BAR!  It’s amazing, right?  But really, it’s not just the sweet display of, well, sweets, but the candy-bright color palate the couple chose for their wedding at the Tuscany Villa.  The blooming centerpieces from Special Arrangements, the vibrant accents atop the Cakes by Gina two-tiered confection, the lemon-yellow chair ties?  Delicious!  Didn’t get enough?  (Don’t feel bad – I didn’t either!)  Check out Sharon Nicole’s blog post here!

Describe your wedding flowers:  Lori of Special Arrangements was our last minute florist and she was fantastic!  We presented our budget and told her about our wedding elements and gave her free reign to design the flowers she thought would best suit the event.  They looked so beautiful and really added a fresh, eye-catching look to our day.  After delivering the flowers, she stayed to make sure everyone was pinned and taken care of.
Describe your wedding cake: Instead of one large cake, we had six smaller cakes and used them as centerpieces.  It was both economical and helped make the cakes more memorable!  We picked two different flavors and altered the flavors between layers.  One layer was red velvet with cream cheese filling and the other was amaretto and raspberry puree.
Were there any wedding traditions or new ideas you included in the wedding? On behalf of our guests, we donated $1 per guest to World Wide Life Fund.  Instead of doing a traditional garter and bouquet toss, we also included two t-shirt tosses with the WWLF t-shirts we had received from our donations.  The t-shirts said, “hotter than I should be” across the front (in reference to global warming).
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?  Turning around to face our guests during the ceremony to receive the congregational blessing, and being wowed by all the people who came to support us on our wedding day.
Any surprise elements?  There were a lot of butterflies hovering around during our ceremony!  That was not planned!
Describe your wedding favors:  Sam and I are both of Chinese descent but we didn’t incorporate any Chinese traditions into our wedding.  For our wedding favors, however, we had chopsticks designed and engraved in Hong Kong.  We also designed our own wedding t-shirts that said, “Wedding Staff” across the back, which we distributed to our wedding party and helpers.
What’s next for you as a couple?  What are you looking forward to in the future?  First, we will turn Sam’s bachelor pad into something that resembles a home.  Second, learn to live each day with gratitude for what God has given us.

Congratulations, Annie + Sam!  Best of luck to you from the SW girls!

What do we love about this Texas wedding at the Fort Bend Community Church?  Color, color and more color!  Fuschia frocks from Eden Bridals, blooming bouquets and bouts from Special Arrangements, jewel-tone striped tie pop even more next to the bride’s paper white La Sposa gown and sophisticated white orchid bouquet.  We like!  Very much.  Thanks to Sharon Nicole Photography for brightening up our winter months.  Check back soon for an extra sweet ending to this Southern wedding!

Describe the proposal. Sam took me horseback riding at a local park on my birthday and when we returned the horses, I found a tent with flowers, petals and a big present box containing his laptop.  On the laptop, I watched a re-recorded, re-taped and revamped version of Taylor Swift’s “Love Story.”  To my surprise, Samuel got down on one knee and proposed!
Three adjectives that describe the day are:  Beautiful, fun and surreal.
What was the design inspiration for your wedding?  We wanted our wedding to reflect God’s beauty in love and nature.  We tried adding as many outdoor elements as we could, including a wedding in the courtyard of our home church, Fort Bend Community Church, and an outdoor dance floor.
What was your favorite design element of your big day?  The do-it-yourself mitsumata trees.  We even made the hangers for the votives using glue guns and wire.   The gravel was pink aquarium gravel from Petsmart!  They turned our beautifully and really added to the atmosphere.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: For our first dance, Sam thought we were going to dance to an acoustic version of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” but instead I rerecorded a personal version of U2’s “All I Want is You” and played it for him as a surprised during our first dance.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress:  We planned our wedding in six months so the wedding dress was the first task to accomplish!  I bought the dress because it was beautiful, simple and youthful.  Another important factor was the great customer service I received from Misora.
