When I first read Kate and Tanner’s interview, I couldn’t resist asking Emily right away, “Are Kate and Tanner’s wedding pictures fabulous?” She confirmed that they were, and while I waited to see them, it felt much like waiting to see pictures from a friend’s wedding. Kate seems like the kind of gal who would be so much fun to hang out with and chat with about all things wedding! She and Tanner drew inspiration for their glamorous Dallas wedding from one of the most meaningful places–their rose gold wedding rings that symbolize their commitment to one another. I love her reminder that “You can’t go wrong with weddings. They’re all beautiful, and at the end of the day, we were married! That’s all that really matters.”

A big thank you to F8 Studios for sharing Kate and Tanner’s big day with us!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. My best friend, Cecily Richardson, and my mom, Sandi Treliving, accompanied me for a day of shopping in Dallas! We went to four wedding dress shops in total with the last stop of the day being the Neiman Marcus Bridal Salon in Downtown Dallas. I had tried on so many dresses that day and literally loved them all. I can’t remember if it was my mom or Cecily, but they found a dress tucked amongst them all and said, “What about this one?” It looked a little risqué as it dipped low in the front and had a sheer back, but I thought I’d give it a try. As soon as I put it on, I knew it was the one! Fit me like a glove and was like nothing I’d ever seen before. Funny enough, it was packed up ten minutes after I tried it on and shipped to another store—it was only there for a one-day trunk show! Talk about lucky! I added an extra foot of length to the train and everything was hand-done by the designer, Reem Acra. They didn’t end up putting the dress into production from the line, so I ended up with a custom Reem Acra gown! The tailor at Neiman’s put the finishing touches on the dress.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We didn’t. As modern of a woman that I’d like to think that I am, I really wanted to feel all the emotions possible of seeing each other for the first time, walking towards becoming husband and wife, and being in front of our family and our friends. When we locked eyes across the aisle, it was such a powerful moment. I want to do it all again!

Our ceremony and cocktail hour music was played by the Dallas String Quartet—Electric Strings! Our family members walked down the aisle to “Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole. Our wedding party walked down the aisle to “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis. I walked down the aisle to “Wild Horses” by the Rolling Stones and we walked out as husband and wife to “All You Need Is Love” by the Beatles. Our first dance was to “That’s How Strong My Love Is” by Otis Redding. My father/daughter dance was to “My Girl” by The Temptations. Tanner and his mom, Lynnae, danced to “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King. I also had an outfit change into my “party dress” and we were reintroduced to the room to “Love on Top” by Beyonce.

My ring is rose gold and Tanner’s is platinum with rose gold inner lining, so rosey-golds were the theme of the wedding. We had peonies, garden roses, orchid chandeliers, cherry blossom trees, you name it! I wish all of those flowers could live forever. There were so many, I felt like I was in a love garden! My bridesmaids had similar flowers with white anemones in their bouquets. The groomsmen’s boutonnieres were white anemones as well. The tables were set with gold/orange orchids on each setting.

My jaw dropped when I saw these tables! I can hardly imagine a more glamorous centerpiece design, and those lucite chairs are so modern and fun.

Our wedding cake was a lemon cake with ginger/cream cheese frosting. It was decorated in metallic gold fondant. Tanner’s cake was a traditional Southern hummingbird cake, his favorite!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Tanner and I met at Pepperdine University. He was a junior; I was a freshman. We had mutual friends, but were both dating other people at the time. I hadn’t seen Tanner in a year or so and thought he had graduated (he had taken a break from college) until the first semester of my senior year. We had a class together and instantly rekindled our friendship. We remained friends until after graduation, but that was it. He had tried to take me on a few dates but I had politely denied. We continued to text each other randomly and I remember asking him via text “When are we getting married?” He wrote back “Cherry blossoms in DC this June!” It wasn’t until Christmas after graduation that he and I had a serious conversation about him visiting me in Dallas. I had tickets to the NBA All Star game, coincidentally on Valentine’s Day, so I invited him to town to attend the game with me. He was my first valentine and my last! The rest is history, and on April 20, we were married in Dallas, under Cherry Blossom trees!
Tell us all about the proposal! Tanner and I both love to ski. The first trip we took together was to Santa Fe, NM during our first year of dating. He told me he loved me on the chair lift during that visit. Two years later, we went back for another ski trip, and this time, he asked me to be his wife at the top of the mountain! It was so exhilarating; I couldn’t ski down the hill! Santa Fe is incredibly romantic, between the pinon wood and the art galleries—I highly recommend it to other couples!
When did y’all get married? April 20, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 235
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Definitely not. All I could think about was kissing him, so repeating someone else’s words was hard enough for us both!
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Probably the orchid chandeliers, nine total. They hung from various points of the ceiling in the ballroom. I also loved the cherry blossom tree where we hung the escort cards in the cocktail area.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our rehearsal dinner was at Sammy’s BBQ in Dallas. We had Brian Houser playing/singing along to acoustic songs during dinner. It was followed by a Welcome Party at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas. The theme of this party was Southern chic. We did all greens, whites and wood colors. We had wooden benches with raw edges, tables with Jan Barboglio rod iron details and more! As far as the wedding itself goes, our Minister married Tanner’s parents and his sister previously! They are all from Amarillo. We served jalapeño margaritas at our cocktail hour and the band played “Friends in Low Places” at one point! There may have even been some line dancing!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Honestly, the whole process was pretty seamless. I think that since we were engaged for 14 months and started planning within a month of being engaged, we decided on things early on and then when it was time to review them closer to the day, no one could remember what we had decided on! We figured out that you can’t go wrong with weddings. They’re all beautiful, and at the end of the day, we were married! That’s all that really matters.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Bella Flora of Dallas. They made it happen!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Tanner and I had our appetizers in a private holding room while everyone else was at cocktails after pictures and they were flipping the ballroom from ceremony mode to reception mode. He and I just got to chill and relax alone!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Call me! Anytime! I love everything about wedding planning and would love to help anyone I can! But sincerely, I think it’s incredibly important to keep your eye on the prize. You’re planning this celebration in honor of you and your husband. Focus on what will make you both happy in the long run, because the celebration comes and goes so fast! You’d be surprised, but you’re not the only one experiencing a ton of emotions. There are people around you who are reacting to the excitement or stress FOR you. Be strong for them! Be patient. Be gracious. Be a Southern woman!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We were looking at dogs the other weekend! We’re homebodies. A big night out for us is a late dinner and a few bottles of wine with friends! We’re both really respectful of each other’s individual time (I need a girls night every now and then) but we hate leaving each other’s sides too! We’re taking it one day at a time, dreaming together, supporting each other’s passions for work and looking at what our next move together will be!

Peaches are a serious favorite here in the Southern Weddings office, so it’s no surprise that we fell in love with Augusta and Jordan’s wedding! This adorable Alabama couple was married by Jordan’s former college mentor in a traditional ceremony, and enjoyed a “breakfast for dinner” dinner and reception afterwards. I love the way they celebrated the wonderful bounty of the South by asking a local farmer to bring in a few crates of peaches, which they proceeded to scatter around their venue. Combined with an abundance of peachy pink blooms and some of the prettiest desserts, the result was beautiful and oh-so-Southern–the perfect backdrop for Augusta and Jordan to begin their marriage!

Many thanks to W+E Photographie for sharing Augusta and Jordan’s special day with us!

We both attended Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, and had many mutual friends. We became closer friends during my sophomore year/his junior year, and during that summer, I traveled to Paris for the summer with Campus Crusade. When I returned, I had no intentions to date, but Jordan asked me to come over to have dinner. We got to know each other as friends, and a couple of months later, he asked me out on an “official” date.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We decided not to do a “first look” because we wanted to have that moment in the chapel (and because we wanted to keep that tradition alive!). Instead, we met in the chapel, held hands around a corner and prayed together. It was nice to have a moment to ourselves, and catch up before walking down the aisle. It also worked well for pictures, because we were able to take our pictures right before sunset, and the lighting was beautiful.

My close friend, and wedding planner, who I interned under, Catherine Wayman, created the most amazing floral displays I’ve ever seen. For our bouquets/boutonnieres, she used a pale pink/peach-colored garden rose, accompanied with other peach, pink and fuchsia shades of garden roses, and lamb’s ear. The main arrangements were combinations of garden roses and peonies (both are my favorites). She mainly used coral charm peonies, and we also had various hydrangeas and succulents. The color scheme was based off of a set of stationery from Rifle Paper Co.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did not write our own vows, but our vows were both personal and traditional. Jordan’s mentor from college officiated, and because he knew both of us so well, he made it very personal.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Our officiant read from 1 Corinthians.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We chose my favorite hymn, “Come Thou Fount,” for the bridal processional. We both took communion, and during this time, we chose Jordan’s favorite hymn, “Abide with Me,” to be played, which my “big sister” in my sorority sang. It gave everyone chills. The recessional was “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,” which my mother walked down the aisle to on her wedding day. Our first dance was to “Be My Baby” from the movie Dirty Dancing. We both loved the song, and had never heard it at any other wedding before, so we went with it!

Isn’t Augusta’s lace gown stunning? It’s perfect for a sweet Southern bride!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We loved the peach detail of our wedding. We had a local farmer bring in some crates full of peaches, and we decided to just put them everywhere! It’s one of my favorite fruits and colors, so it worked out perfectly. Our colors were peach, coral, and a light seafoam blue/mint. When we picked up the peaches, some of them were in blue colored crates, so it seemed perfect with our theme.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. I didn’t want a very traditional wedding cake at our wedding, so we went with a smaller two-tiered wedding cake and two one-layer cakes, from the best cake shop in town, Olexa’s. Jordan’s cake was a red velvet sheet cake, decorated with a rugby player and bride on top of a rugby field. The only thing I knew I really wanted for the wedding was donuts, to go along with our “Breakfast for Dinner” theme. We got donuts from a local shop, Heavenly Donut Co., in various flavors, including my favorite, maple bacon.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? It’s a tie between seeing Jordan at the end of the aisle, and driving away at the end of the night. I was so happy to finally have an alone moment with Jordan and thrilled about the events of the day, yet so sad that the day was over. It was a tender moment.

Tell us all about the proposal! Jordan moved to Indianapolis to begin working with a new company, and we had been dating long distance for a couple of months. He asked me to come visit for Labor Day weekend to celebrate our one-year anniversary. He had originally planned to propose a month later, over our university’s homecoming weekend, when both of our families would be in town, but he changed his mind. He took me to the “Canal Walk” and then to dinner to celebrate. We walked around the canals and came to a beautiful vine-covered bridge with the city in the background, and he proposed. I was completely surprised, and he even had one of our good friends (who lives in Indy) photograph the whole thing. The two of us went to dinner afterwards, and although we wanted our friends and family there, it was so nice taking the moment in, just us. I surprised my sorority with an “out-of-the-blue” white candle.
When did y’all get married? June 23, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? Around 250
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. We went to a boutique in Mt. Laurel, AL, where one of our family friends is a manager. I made a day of it with my mom and three of my bridesmaids/best friends. I knew the look I wanted, and it was the second dress I tried on. I was sold!
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! Something borrowed was the lipstick I wore, something blue was my garter, something new was the wedding dress, something old was my grandmother’s wedding shoes, which happened to fit me perfectly.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The food was definitely Southern. We had a biscuit station, ham with grilled peaches, and bacon with brown sugar. Our friends played a game of cornhole outside, with a custom-painted corn hole set, and sipped sweet tea at picnic tables. The peaches tied everything together with a very Southern feel.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The guest list and invitations were definitely the hardest challenge to overcome. We wanted to invite so many people, but just couldn’t because of the size of our venue.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Last summer, I interned for a wedding venue in Birmingham that specialized in in-house floral design and in-house catering. I felt so blessed that Catherine, their wedding planner (and my close friend), created my bouquets and flower arrangements. Also, Corretti Catering created the most delicious buffet I’ve ever seen. Their staff is incredible, and it was a blessing seeing them all on our wedding day. Our photographers were equally amazing, and so much fun to work with. They made everything flow effortlessly, and I felt so calm working with them.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Don’t sweat the small stuff. After interning for a wedding planner and working so diligently on our own wedding, I realized that at the end of the day, you’re getting married to your best friend, and that’s all that should matter. Also, make the day and the details look like you. You want your guests to think that every detail reflects your personality and style.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are looking forward to settling down in Birmingham, a city we both love. We are anxious to travel and can’t wait to begin planning our next adventure together.

Oh y’all are in for a real treat today! I’m such a fan of surprise weddings, and Abby + Sam hit the nail on the head with their engagement party turned big day! With the help of some fabulous vendors, like Abby’s good friend Meghan from M. Elizabeth Events, these two decided to switch their plans from a destination wedding in the Bahamas to a hometown wedding. The crazy part? They managed to change everything over in just three weeks! Holy cow! I also love how they chose to keep the coral motif as an ode to their original plans for a Bahamian big day!

Special thanks to Alisha Crossley for capturing such a fun surprise!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. Luckily for me, my friend Meghan Cease (M. Elizabeth and Events) is a wedding planner. She set up appointments for me at Ivory and White in Mountain Brook, AL. I fell in love with the delicate details of my dress. It was perfect!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did. After talking with Alisha, I felt like it was the best for us. I knew we would both be calmer after seeing each other. Portraits were really important to me, as well as being fully present at my reception. Seeing each other before made both of those possible.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Oh gosh! I don’t think we would have been able to do anything besides repeat the ones given to us! Even with the first look, we were nervous going through our “I do’s.” I love exactly how we did it.

Describe your wedding flowers. Lush. Vibrant. Romantic. We originally planned to get married at my family’s home in the Bahamas. Since the engagement party turned into a surprise wedding, we wanted to carry over the tropical details as much as possible.

We had personalized cocktails for Sam and I. He chose the “Old Fashioned”–a true Southern gent’s drink! I went with Alabama Sunshine–something fun and Southern at the same time! We had a local food truck serving dishes. I think that trend is really picking up in the South, and I love it! Our venue was a historical location in the heart of Alabama: the historical Shoal Creek Golf Community.

As y’all know, I’m a big fan of Southern oyster houses, so I bet this food truck was such a blast!!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. I wanted something simple and sweet. We went with a plain white cake adorned by large fuchsia peonies. It was delicious!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Sam and I met through a mutual friend. I was dating someone casually at the time, but Sam stole my heart! We hung out together as friends at first, but things progressed quickly!
Tell us all about the proposal! I scheduled a couple’s session with our friend and photographer, Alisha Crossley. Sam and I wanted canvases in our home, but I wasn’t patient enough to wait until we were engaged. I knew we were getting closer to Sam popping the question, but I thought things were still a few months out. Unbeknownst to me, Sam had contacted Alisha on his own after I scheduled the session. I was completely ignorant to his plans since I actually set everything up! Toward the end of the session, Sam told me he wanted to spend his life with me. I laughed and said, “Well, you have to ask me first.” He slid down to one knee and pulled out my ring–the same diamond that has been in his family for years! I squealed as Alisha captured it all! We then walked to a nearby cafe, where he presented me with flowers and a chilled bottle of Dom Perignon. We called friends and family while lounging on the patio, drinking our champagne. We spent the evening celebrating with friends at one of our favorite restaurants, Satterfields.
When did y’all get married? May 31, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? About 100
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: I really loved my dress … I felt amazing in it!
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! Borrowed were my earrings, blue was a diamond bracelet with sapphires, old was a broach, new was a diamond bracelet Sam gave me as a wedding gift.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $50,000-$75,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? I was blessed in having some of my best friends surround me with their talents on my wedding day. Meghan as well as my friend Madi (hairstylist) worked to make everything perfect for me.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Well, since we decided to turn a destination wedding planned for October into a local wedding in May THREE weeks before the day, we had several challenges! Thankfully, we had a large engagement party planned with all of my favorite vendors, most of whom were scheduled to travel with us to the Bahamas. I had Meghan there to help coordinate everything, and the wedding was actually at her family’s home in the historical Shoal Creek community. She handled reorganizing everyone and getting people scheduled as needed. We kept the new plans a surprise so that our guests STILL thought they were attending an engagement party!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? I was so excited to surprise everyone with the ceremony! I loved walking down the aisle freshly changed into my wedding gown and seeing everyone’s faces!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? I think it’s important not to get caught up in what everyone else is doing and to make the details personal. Having friends in the wedding industry, I knew what was “popular” and what everyone else was doing, but I wanted our day to truly be ours. I think we really made that happen!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Sam and I recently found out the we are expecting! We are excited about starting our own family and instilling the same Southern traditions that have given us both so much happiness growing up!
