On a recent call, Emily said, “I just assigned a real wedding to you, and I’m pretty sure you’re going to like it!” Patience is not a virtue I possess, so I immediately high-tailed it over to the blog schedule and started pouring through Hanna and Grant’s photos! As a UNC alum myself with a heart that bleeds Carolina Blue, I’ve spent many hours walking through the campus where Hanna and Grant met, fell in love, and celebrated the beginning of their married life! To see how they wove their story and their love of Chapel Hill into their big day in an elegant and understated way made me feel right at home, and I’m certain each guest felt the same way! Hanna and Grant, I hope to run into you tonight on Franklin Street after our big win! *fingers crossed*

Big hugs to Blue Ribbon Vendor Faith Teasley for sharing this day with us!

Searching for my wedding dress was one of my favorite activities! I decided that I wanted to go to Georgetown (Washington, D.C.) because I love Georgetown and they have plenty of beautiful bridal salons. I ended up inviting all of my bridesmaids (four were able to come), my mom, and my mother-in-law to join in on the search. Our first appointment was at Hitched Salon. I loved everything about their salon! They were so sweet and really tailored the appointment to my needs. We were given a room in the back and I ended up falling in love with the third dress. I tried on a few more dresses just to make sure, but I kept coming back to the third dress. I teared up every time I put it on! We cancelled our next two appointments and were able to enjoy the rest of the day together. I love that I was able to share this moment with some of my favorite people.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? With both of us being UNC grads, me growing up in Chapel Hill, and many of our best friends being UNC alums, we wanted a historic Chapel Hill feel. The Forest Theater and Horace Williams House provided that while being walking distance from each other.

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We had a good friend of Grant’s read 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. We love this reading because it is short and simple, but sums up what we believe about love and marriage.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. For my walk down the aisle, we went with Pachelbel’s “Canon in D.” This was a classic that Grant loved, so I thought that it would be the perfect song to walk down the aisle to.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The slight references to UNC. We used UNC golf carts to transport the wedding party and photographer, UNC stadium cups for beer, and UNC pint glasses for our favors. We love UNC and had many alumni as guests. We loved how we were able to incorporate UNC without being over the top and cheesy.

I love flowers that are light and airy with a lot of greenery. I felt like our florist did a great job giving us exactly that. We stuck to white and pale pink flowers to give that light and airy look, and used all types of flowers and greenery, including rosemary! My favorite thing about our flowers was that our florist cut most of them from her backyard garden.

We served Southern BBQ to our guests. We feel that BBQ is easy and everyone likes it–plus, it gave our Northern guests a chance to experience Southern BBQ. For dessert, we went with chocolate chip cookies, as that is Grant’s favorite dessert. We felt there was enough attention on us for the weekend that we didn’t need to do a cake cutting, so we just went with something simple and easy. We used a variety of silver platters from my family to display the cookies. We loved how all of the platters were the same color, but were still so different.

Our first dance was to Ray Lamontagne’s “You are the Best Thing.” We love the pace and meaning of this song! For the reception, we wanted to make sure that we played music that was easy to dance to. All of our family members and friends love to dance. We requested that the DJ play a mix with a slight emphasis on 70s Motown. It worked and the dance floor was packed the entire night.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met at a soccer alumni event at the Crunkleton on October 5, 2013. My brother Chipper was a current soccer player, and current families were invited to attend the annual alumni event. We decided that we would go for a little bit. I met Grant and stayed a little longer than expected. (Fun fact: we can almost see the Crunkleton from our new house.)
Tell us all about the proposal! We have a golden retriever named Cooper that we love to take on walks. We used to have a path that we would take daily. On Easter morning of 2015, Grant suggested that we go on a walk in the morning before we went to my parents’ for an Easter celebration. During our walk, Grant suggested that we go into the gazebo that we passed every day. When we got there, there was a vase of flowers and a card waiting. Grant got on one knee and asked me to marry him.
When did y’all get married? May 28, 2016
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 185
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? We bought a 1938 cottage in Chapel Hill four months prior to our wedding, so in addition to wedding planning, we were remodeling our first home together. While it wasn’t easy at the time, starting our marriage in a home that we had a say in design-wise was special to us.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? Well, cookies instead of cake saved some money. We hired some of the UNC soccer players to help us with wedding set-up and breakdown, and they also transported the bridal party from preparations to the wedding site. My dad built the altar used in the Forest Theater, as well as two bars for the serving stations at the Horace Williams House, one of which is in our home today.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? We got UNC golf carts to transport the wedding party around campus for pictures after the ceremony. Once the bridal party was done with photos and we finished our alone shots, we had a quiet golf cart ride to ourselves from the Bell Tower on campus to the Horace Williams House. While the ceremony, family, friends, dancing, and everything else were special moments that we will always remember, that moment to ourselves to take a breath and realize we were officially married was something we cherished.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? I think I would tell others to really enjoy the process and trust that it will all work out. I also think it is important to think about what is best for you as a couple and make sure that the day reflects you. It is okay to stray from what is considered “the norm” at a wedding. For example, we cut out the bouquet toss, garter toss, and cake cutting.
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? As simple as it sounds, we are excited to just be married. We aren’t really sure what is next, but we can’t wait to find out!

Oh my, this was beautiful beyond belief! I LOVE the Forest Theater as a ceremony spot and now, the Horace Williams House is on my dream reception list. ;) What a gorgeous celebration. Thank you for sharing your special day with us, Hanna and Grant!

We get little peeks into Kristin and Kyle’s house every week during our Google hangout staff meetings, and I know I’m not the only one who has been anxious for a full tour! Ever the picture of Southern hospitality, they graciously agreed to share with us and y’all on Southern Newlywed today. Anyone who knows the Winchesters knows how much they value their marriage and are willing to do the hard work to make their life together truly wonderful, so I loved reading their interview answers and soaking up their wisdom…even more than I loved admiring the colorful patterns they’ve sprinkled throughout their Orlando home. Y’all enjoy!

Thanks so much to our Blue Ribbon Vendor Kt Crabb for snapping these photos!

The couple: Kristin (32) and Kyle (33) Winchester
Years married: Almost four
Where they live: Orlando, Florida
Tell us a little bit about yourselves I am “pearls, monograms, and pops of color” and Kyle is “Jordans, hoops, and hip hop.” While seemingly different on the surface, what makes us work is that at our core, we are united by a shared belief in Jesus, a love for family, and an unconditional love and willingness to move mountains for one another. Our splash of differences makes for many adventures and a whole lot of fun.
Tell us your love story in one sentence. We meet in college, dated across three states for the better part of our 20s, and have been blissfully married for almost four years.
Do you rent or own? What are your hopes and plans for the future in this area? Tell us a little bit about where you live. We managed to find and buy the most darling Virginia craftsman in the heart of stucco and tile country. Our neighborhood is like a little piece of heaven–we are within walking distance of a grocery store, a few restaurants, and downtown merchants (think dry cleaner, nail salon, barber, etc.). We decided early on in our marriage that for the foreseeable future, we would rather live in more modest housing with better proximity to the goings on of wherever we were living. So, while we have sacrificed square footage and any semblance of a yard (umm, we share an alley way instead of having a backyard), we live right in the middle of many things that we love to see and do around the Orlando area.

What is your favorite memory from your wedding? The moment the church doors opened and we saw each other for the first time. I asked KPW and he agreed. My heart starts to beat faster every time I think of that moment.
How do you remember your wedding in your home? We have framed pictures in more than one room and the family bible that was a wedding gift from my grandmother is open in our living room. On a little less serious but super sentimental note, we have a stack of personalized stadium cups (we used them for our wedding toast at the reception) that we use on an almost daily basis.
What has been the most surprising thing about marriage? While I had a sneaky feeling marriage with KPW was going to be one big adventure, I discounted how much I would love the simple act of spending time with him doing mundane tasks, and how, after 12+ years together, I would still get butterflies when getting dressed up to go out to dinner or see him after being gone on a business trip. Kyle is still surprised by how seamless our transition to married life has been. As an only child, he was apprehensive, to say the least, about giving up his “independence.” We both credit our transition to our intentionality in preparing for our marriage and an ongoing effort to give love patterned after our love languages.

What is your favorite part of being married? Kyle’s favorite thing about being married is having someone cook dinner for him 5+ nights a week (lucky for him, I love to cook). My favorite part of being married is how much I laugh. KPW can make me laugh so hard, I cry, and and our “silly” moments are some of my favorites (think: videos of KPW rapping while driving).
Who cooks dinner? I handle 98% of the cooking, but since getting married, KPW has become quite the handy sous chef. He is also really good at picking up takeout from our favorite sushi restaurant when we’ve both had really long days and are too tired to cook.
What is your go-to weeknight meal? Weekend meal? The crockpot is my BFF on weekdays (like for this salsa chicken) and we love making breakfast on the weekends (like these banana nut muffins).
What’s your favorite place to find recipes? My recipe repertoire is made up from a combination of blogs (Skinny Taste, Gimme Some Oven, Iowa Girl Eats, Sally’s Baking Addiction) and tried-and-true family recipes (chicken pastry, sloppy joes, chicken vegetable soup).

Which items from your wedding registry do you use the most often? Besides our favorite Pottery Barn towels and sheets (do yourself a favor and register for nice linens), the “fancy” kitchen tools get the most use. If you plan to cook any meals at home, I highly recommend registering for a grill pan, a mixer (it is the best for shredding chicken), and a pizza stone. And if you have a sweet tooth, you won’t be upset about registering for an ice cream maker. We have loved mixing up batch after bath of ice cream in the summer, and it’s a great way to meet the neighbors.
What different decisions, if any, would you make for your registry if you knew then what you knew now? I would have followed Emily’s lead and picked out mix-and-match china. I love our good china but think we would use it even more if it had a bit more flexibility, and a perhaps a pop of color. I also wish we had registered for a second set of sheets for our bed. I can’t stress enough how much I have appreciated having nice linens. There is something so comforting about climbing into a warm and cozy bed after a long day.

Tell us about the process of moving in together. Do you have any tips for blending your two styles? Two words for you: brown sofas. I have worked hard to decorate around and graciously accept some “in very good shape” pieces of furniture that were a package deal with KPW. The blending of styles has been more of a phasing in, instead of a flipping of the switch, process. My advice is to take things slow and not just buy and replace because everything doesn’t look “Pinterest-worthy.” Our sofas (while not my favorite) are great anchor pieces, and since I didn’t replace them, I had a little extra money to pick up a new entertainment piece off Craigslist and splurge on some fun fabric for our ottoman. I also think that having conversations and making sure both parties feel represented during the decorating process is important. I will admit that I lucked out with KPW, as he lets me do crazy things like hang pink curtains and paint our upstairs stark white. But, I also know this is because he trusts me to make decorating decisions that reflect well on our family. In turn, I love him enough to balance the pink pillows with some manly wooden tables and two televisions in our family room.
What most makes your house feel like home? On the surface, hanging drapes and organizing my kitchen. It is amazing how much more put together a house feels once the curtains are hung and fresh towels are in the bathrooms. And being able to walk around the kitchen and pull things out of the cabinets to throw together a quick meal is a huge step in feeling at home.

Where do you splurge and where do you save when decorating? What are some of your favorite sources for home things? It is a well-known fact that if you lined up 10 lovely and similar tables in a row, I would inevitably pick the most expensive table in the bunch. With that in mind, I have had to manage my expectations and realize that decorating is going to be a lifetime process. KPW’s job is going to have us moving a few more times before we settle down for the long haul, so when we do splurge on something, we try to make sure it is a piece of furniture or décor that can move with us and fit wherever we live next (see: our beloved headboard and Craigslist entertainment center). Much of our supplemental décor (lamps, storage, etc.) comes from a variety of low budget sources: Target, HomeGoods, Ikea, thrifting, and Craiglist.
What is one small way you love or serve your spouse? I go grocery shopping and give Kyle space (he is an only child). Kyle graciously lets me hang pink curtains and hog the covers.

What’s your best tip for balancing your relationship and other life priorities (work, personal time, extended family, etc.)? This is an ongoing challenge, but something that we’re willing to fight through because we value our relationship above all other life priorities. We have to constantly communicate, re-evaluate, and set new boundaries when things change. With our current careers, we both work long hours and live far from extended family, so we have to work hard to intentionally plan down time and trips back home to visit friends and family. We value our weekends and quickly learned that with busy weeks, we benefit from regularly unscheduled and unplanned weekends to recharge our batteries.
Do you have a favorite date night idea to share? One? How about five?

Is there anything else about your home or family life that you think our readers would be interested in? KPW’s job is moving us just down the road to Tampa, Florida. While we are excited about this opportunity, we’re heartbroken to have to sell our beloved first “together” home after only being here a year! But it taught me an important life lesson: there’s no telling how long you might be somewhere, so wherever possible, hang curtains and pictures (command strips are my BFF) and dig into the community around you: try new restaurants, find a church, make a new friend who will meet you for lunch, etc. Try to make your dwelling pace (no matter how temporary) a home. I know, without a doubt, we will look back on our time in Orlando with great joy, because we made the best of the time we were here. PS: If you are looking for a house in the greater-Orlando area, let me know ;)

One of my favorite interview questions to read is what the couple’s most memorable moment is from their wedding day. Sometimes, the unexpected moments turn out to be the very best ones, but Adrienne and Scott’s is one for the record books! With the gracious help of the Tuckahoe Plantation staff, what could have been a very unfortunate situation (a tornado warning and a storm headed right toward their venue!) was replaced by a favorite memory (a few drinks indoors and a mini history lesson on Tuckahoe) that Adrienne, Scott, and their guests are still talking about! Though not ideal, Adrienne and Scott dealt with this challenge head on, hand in hand. I’m sure it’s not the first marriage lesson they were expecting, but I’d bet it’s one that will always stay with them.

Big hugs to Stephanie Yonce for capturing this lovely day!

Scott and I went to Houston to visit my parents, as well as so I could look for a dress with my mom, stepmom, and sister. We ended up dress shopping on my birthday, which was the best birthday present I could have asked for! My dress was the fourth one I tried on. I wasn’t 100 percent sold at first, but my mind kept going back to that particular dress when we looked at other ones. We ended up leaving the store and going to another. I think it took looking at some other options to realize that that one was it. We went back to the original store with my dad so he could see it–that’s when the tears came and we were sold!

My mom had a few requests when it came to the music. She requested she walk down the aisle to “I Will” by the Beatles, because that was the song she sang to me as a baby. She also requested I walk in to “Canon in D.” Obviously, we were happy to accommodate her requests. Scott and I walked back up the aisle to “You Make My Dreams” by Hall and Oates. We wanted to choose something fun and upbeat to really set the tone for the rest of the night.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did write our own vows. I don’t know if we had a favorite line–our vows were short and sweet and reflected our relationship perfectly.

Scott and I love being outside and knew that we wanted to have everything outside (yes, we knew the risk of weather, and boy, were we the classic example of why you should ALWAYS have a backup plan!). I had seen Tuckahoe Plantation online a few times and instantly fell in love. We toured a few places just to make sure we were covering all of our bases, but I think we both loved Tuckahoe from the start. We ended up choosing a “Texas meets Virginia” theme for the wedding, and knowing that Tuckahoe Plantation is the boyhood home of Thomas Jefferson really sealed the deal.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Besides the flowers, our favorite detail might have been our stadium cups that I designed. One had our monogram on it surrounded by a wreath and the other had a drawing of Tuckahoe Plantation with our date at the bottom. Not only were they practical (no broken glass on the dance floor!), we also love going to friends’ houses and seeing the cups in their cupboards.

My mom is a florist in Houston and I had no doubt in my mind that she would do an amazing job. We talked a bunch about what we were thinking in terms of colors, style, particular flowers, and ideas. I got to the point when I was becoming so overwhelmed with details for the wedding, I finally threw my hands up and told her that I trusted her creativity and she could do whatever she wanted. She absolutely blew us away–everything was organic, colorful, out of the box, and complimented the venue perfectly. She even went to the lengths of sending us curly willow sticks in March, which we had to leave in water in our backyard while they sprouted leaves. I am pretty sure our new neighbors thought we were crazy! It was well worth the mosquito infestation to see that she used them to make the tent poles into floral trees. I wanted all of the other decor to take a backseat so the flowers could shine.

Our first dance song was “I Get Carried Away” by George Strait– as a Texas girl, one of his songs was an obvious choice. My father/daughter dance song was “Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy” by The Tams. I actually ended up splitting my father/daughter dance with my dad and my 90-year-old grandfather–he absolutely stole the show and it was a moment I will always cherish.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met in college my freshman year at High Point University in our “Jesus and the Gospels” class. Scott sat behind me and spent an entire semester throwing little balled up pieces of paper with his phone number on it into my bag. We didn’t start dating until four years later after Scott had graduated.
Tell us all about the proposal! We were down in Florida visiting my grandparents when Scott asked if I wanted to go for a walk on the beach. Scott hates any kind of PDA, so when I went to hold his hand, I asked him if it was too cheesy for him…that’s when he got down on one knee! I was completely surprised–I had no idea it was coming. When we got back to my grandparents’ house, we first told my grandmother, who was extremely excited for us. We then went inside and told my grandfather. He didn’t really have a reaction, which I found odd. My grandmother asked us if we had thought of any plans yet and my grandfather then said “What are you planning?” I told him again, a little louder, that Scott had proposed. His reaction was much more excited after he actually heard what I had said! I was especially glad Scott decided to propose while we were in Florida and that my grandmother was able to be a part of our story, because unfortunately, she passed away a month before our wedding.
When did y’all get married? June 20, 2015
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? About 110
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We had two small, simple wedding cakes with flowers on top. We also had the world’s best pecan pies from Goode Company BBQ in Houston. Ever since I brought one back to Richmond after visiting Houston, Scott’s dad has told me I am never allowed back in the state unless I have one of their pies in hand!
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I did! My something borrowed was a pair of my grandmother’s earrings, which she helped me pick out on a visit to Florida. My something blue was my wedding band, which has sapphires (both of our birthstones) in it. My something old was both of my grandmothers’ wedding rings tied to my bouquet, my mother’s veil with lace from two of my great-grandmother’s wedding dresses, and a Texas Navy button my paternal grandfather gave my maternal grandfather when my parents were married. My something new was my dress and my gold Sperry Topsiders (I had to wear Sperrys on my last day of being a Sperry!).
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The most memorable moment of our day came right after all of our first dances. I was talking to one of our friends when I saw, out of the corner of my eye, the owner of Tuckahoe Plantation on the front lawn talking to Sarah. I immediately went over to Sarah, and in the calmest voice, she told me, “So, we are going to have to take a little break–we have a tornado warning for the area and the storm is coming right for us. Family, the bridal party, and out-of-town guests are going to head into the main house for a little history lesson on the plantation, and everyone else is going to head to the Old Stable.” Sarah is queen of always telling her brides that guests are going to react to situations however the bride and groom react to them. I told Scott, and we grabbed a drink and headed indoors. A situation that could have ruined the entire wedding ended up being our favorite memory of the whole day. Everyone hung out inside for about 20-30 minutes, learned some more about Tuckahoe, and then went right back outside to enjoy the rest of the party. Even after talking to our friends weeks later, they all agree that it made for one memorable evening and they could not have had more fun. We truly cannot thank the family at Tuckahoe Plantation enough for their generosity, allowing all of our closest family and friends inside their home. They really went above and beyond to make sure that everyone was safe, and we are so appreciative of that. Their staff even went to the length of chopping up a tree that had fallen over the driveway in a matter of minutes to make sure that everyone was able to get home safely.
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? We are enjoying making our new house a home with our dog, Miller!
