Southern Weddings Weekly Round-Up

by in Main on

The weekend is here! We’ve been working like crazy in the office this past week preparing to bring y’all amazing things (and prepping for V4! Yeehaw!). So I’m ready for a weekend of crafting and good food, how about you guys?

We started off the week with a bright and fun inspiration board that will get you exited for a Tex Mex fiesta of your own! We think it will make for a great rehearsal or welcome dinner!

Our Southern style expert, Marissa shares one of our favorite Southern things: bow-ties! Y’all know we can never have too many of them around! And let’s go ahead and admit it: we love seeing our beaus sporting bows.

We hope you can tell, but a few weeks ago, we switch to a giant new server to handle all of our traffic! Now that things have gotten roomier, we’re excited to announce that Southern Weddings V1, V2 and V3 will soon be available for you to view online! Want a sneak peak of all of the goodness? V3 is already online for your viewing pleasure.

Y’all, welcome to the dog days of summer. Summers are wonderful in the South, but we know they can do a number on your hair and makeup! Take a look at the tips and tricks I gathered from two hair and makeup experts on how to beat the heat!

We love this week’s Southern Fab Find! These peach crisp cookies from Baking for Good are perfectly Southern and sound so yummy! Better yet, when you order from Baking for Good, a portion of your payment goes the the charity of your choice! Go to the original post to win two dozen of these cookies!

This dreamy garden inspiration shoot was the perfect midday pick-me-up. I love the modern accents amid the rustic color palette and how it features real-life husband and wife, Naomi and Josh from the Rockstar Diaries!

In the Newlywed Kitchen, we’re cooking up Sierra’s great grandmother Damie’s catsup! There ain’t nothing better than homemade! View the recipe and download a recipe card here. Have a recipe you want to share? Let Marissa know!

Y’all had the chance to get to know me, Sierra, Marissa and Whitney. Now, get to know our amazing Art Director, Emily! She’s talented, sweet and loves poetry! Grab some raspberry lemonade and sit a spell with her.

We featured Mary + Greg’s stylish coral farm wedding in this week’s Real Wedding Gallery. Take a look here.

Our Real Weddings are gorgeous!

Samantha + Graham exchanged vows in the Southern Part of Heaven (a.k.a Chapel Hill), where blush pink and blues helped create a sweet Southern soiree. See it here and here.

Ashley + Patrick’s classic garden wedding was rich in Southern hospitality and romantic details. See it here and here.

We love good news!

Y’all! I’m so excited to share today’s recipe! It comes from one Miss Sierra’s great grandmother, Anna Augusta Kincaid Powell, or as her family aptly named her “Damie”! Damie is defined as a favored companion and a person to whom you look up and admire. Wow! What a great name!

Damie seen seated here in a photo from Sierra’s Aunt Ginger did not like to have her picture made.

What you’ll need:
One gallon sliced tomatoes (with skin on)
2 Tb. salt
2 Tb. red pepper
2 Tb. black pepper
1 tsp. mace
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. cloves
Add:
3 large onions, sliced
1 box plus 1 cup brown sugar
1 quart apple cider vinegar
1 heaping tsp. ground mustard

Directions:
Mix well. Then simmer for 4 hours over low heat. Stir often to prevent scorching. Pour through colander 3 times (if you’re in a rush, there is no need to do this. Simply put tomatoes and onions in a food processor and whizzz until mushy consistency! Then toss it all in the pot and simmer) at end of 4 hours. Re-cook over medium heat stirring constantly until as thick as desired. Normally, about 1 hour. Pour in scalded bottles and seal with caps (if you have a capper!) If not, use canning jars.

According to Aunt Ginger, all six of Damie’s grandchildren remember the smells of her kitchen, especially when she made this tangy and sweet “catsup.” More like a sauce it is amazingly delicious on black-eyed peas or on a pot roast! Now that’s Southern yumminess!

Alabama newlyweds, Ashley + Patrick know Southern hospitality! They served up shrimp and grits, sweet tea, and root beer floats all night, as guests weaved in and out of the Historic Rucker Place’s garden, rooms, and double wrap-around porches (be still my heart!). A Motown band played while guests ate and partied. At the end of the night, Ashley + Patrick made their getaway down the porch of the house as they ran through a line of sparklers. I love looking at these last few photos from Spindle Photography as the couple enjoys their first dance and savors the getaway.

See all the photos from Ashley + Patrick’s wedding in their Real Wedding Gallery!

Describe your wedding flowers: My flower design was full of Alabama-native white hydrangeas, freesia, green berries and lots of greenery.
Describe your wedding cake: Like the rest of our wedding, I wanted it to feel natural and organic. The cake was an offset octagonal four-layer cake. Vanilla with butter cream icing that was a stucco pattern. It was adorned with white peonies, white hydrangeas, greenery and sporadic twigs. It was uniquely my style!
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: It’s hard to pick just one thing, but the root beer float station is a fun detail that is definitely near the top of the list.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? I think a wedding’s Southern charm can mainly be attributed to the inherent warmth, long vowels, and the elegance of the people in attendance. However, the surroundings, and details of the day, do their part to polish it. Our wedding and reception where both in a historic Birmingham, AL home, complete with double wrap around porches that overlook a hydrangea filled garden, where the ceremony was held. The food, Motown band, and bars where scattered throughout the rooms and grounds of the house, making it necessary for guests to weave in and out of the old home, like it were their own and giving a very personal feel to the whole event. My bridesmaids, as elegant as ever, looked like Southern ladies in their pearls and taffeta dresses. To complete our Southern wedding, a variety of Southern treats were served for dinner including shrimp and grits, pulled pork and, of course, sweet tea!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? By nature and by trade, I’m a stylist and designer, so I wanted to have a hand on every detail. It was hard to let go and allow other people to execute my ideas on the actual day.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We both hope to stay in Birmingham for a long while. Next on the list is buying a house. I think we are both so happy that we are just living in “the now.” There will be so many wonderful things to come in the future, but we are soaking up life just as it is right now!

Hi Marielle! Thanks so much for letting us know! Our site was actually hacked a few weeks ago, and we’re still working to restore the month’s worth of posts that were lost. We should have these photos back up soon!
