Monthly Archives: June 2010

In true Southern fashion, Paige + Joe’s Charleston wedding – photographed by Kate Headley – was a traditional and elegant celebration.  Petal pink bridesmaid dresses from Lula Kate, a historic downtown venue and a classic silk Jim Hjelm gown?  Yup, pretty traditional – and all kinds of stunning.  (The dramatic key-hole detailing on the back of Paige’s dress adds just the right touch of playfulness, though, don’t ya think?)  My favorite accents have to be the bride’s cute navy clutch (it was one of my Fab Finds picks in the last SW issue!) and the groom’s coordinated bow tie.  Simply sweet Southern weddings make my day.  How ‘bout yours?

How did the two of you meet?  Tell us your story.  Joe and I began working for the same consulting company right after college. Although I lived in Connecticut and he lived in Washington D.C., we were both in training for work in Chicago at the same time. After sitting next to each other during long days of training classes we became good friends and then started dating soon after that. A few months later, I moved down to D.C. and the rest is history!
Describe the proposal.
Joe surprised me by proposing during a picnic lunch in Middleburg, VA.
Three adjectives that describe the day are:
Intimate, classic and preppy.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The location was by far our favorite detail. We love Charleston and were so happy to have our wedding in such a beautiful, historic city. We were so happy to have our wedding at McCrady’s and feel that it was a perfect venue for us. We loved the character of McCrady’s so much that we felt we only needed minimal decorations. The room where we held our ceremony had beautiful chandeliers, fireplaces, and pale yellow damask wallpaper. It was elegant and traditional and felt very southern. In complete contrast was the room where our reception was held. That room had exposed brick walls and large exposed wooden beams. The room felt very rustic, yet sophisticated.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress:
I had found a wedding dress back in October, but when it came in March I was unhappy with it. I tried the dress on and just didn’t feel like a bride. After several days of worry, I was flipping through the spring issue of Martha Stewart Weddings magazine and saw a dress that I fell in love with. I did some searching online and found that there was one in stock at a store about 30 minutes from me. I went to try it on and bought the dress right off the rack since it was impossible for me to order it with less than 8 weeks to go until my wedding day. Thanks to a wonderful seamstress I would up having a dress that fit perfectly and made me feel like a bride. My favorite details of the dress were the cutout back and the pockets!
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration?  What was Southern about your wedding? (It’s okay if not much was!)
We served our favorite Southern foods including shrimp and grits, pork tenderloin with chutney, johnny cakes, fried green tomatoes, ham biscuits with peach preserves, crab cakes, and fried mac n’ cheese. The location itself was also southern since it was a destination for everyone. We had guests fly in from all over the country to be there for our big day, as well as to explore all the history and charm that Charleston has to offer.

Katie, your comment made me go back and take a closer look at Paige’s blush, and you’re right, it is lovely! Pretty much just a lovely wedding overall.

Kate couldn’t have done a better job of capturing the beauty of this elegant and romantic day… Although Charleston, Paige and her stunning bridal party were a pretty lovely canvas to work with. Paige was a beautiful bride and found the perfect dress just in time! Paige and some of her bridesmaid had their makeup done by a local professional Charleston makeup artist Pamela Lesch. http://www.makeupartistcharleston.com/ …. McCradys was excellent as well!

Hi– Can you tell me which style that this Bridal Gown is- i cannot find it- thanks!!!

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Marie! I apologize — the dress is by Jim Hjelm, but we don’t know the style! I just took a look at their site, and it doesn’t seem to be available at this point, sadly (unsurprising, though, since it was from a few years ago!). Goof luck with your search!

My addiction to bags is nothing! It seems that everybody is addicted to something and some of your addictions are a little more on the… unusual side. We asked readers to tell us their addictions for a chance to win a luxurious black leather travel bag from Lotuff and Clegg.

Congratulations to Lena, who’s addiction made me literally laugh out loud.

I am obsessed with the strangest thing-Haribo gummies called Die Schlümpfe. They’re Smurf-shaped, berry flavor gummies available exclusively in Europe. Since my discovery, I’ve been forced to buy huge tubs (5, 10 lbs and up) in order for my gummy-crack supplier to send them! But they’re always worth it.

I’m generally a down-to-earth, vegetarian, free spirit kind of person… but I am utterly addicted to Perez Hilton. Why is it so fascinating?!

I am hopelessly addicted to dresses. There’s something about dresses that are such a confidence builder for me! No matter what kind of morning it is, if I put on a dress I feel feminine and beautiful. While I’m still building my collection on my small budget, I get really excited at the thought of buying dresses for many upcoming engagement functions!

In a word – CANDY! I am usually a salt-snacker and love a good bag of chips or pretzels any day of the week, I could take or leave most desserts… but get me in a candy store and I go wild! From gummi bears and tootsie rolls to sour belts and nonpareils, I just don’t know it is, I can’t say no :)

I am obsessed with quality wrapping paper! I just cannot resist a brilliant roll of gift wrapping goodness. I have paper to suit every holiday or event. I am always on the hunt for the unusual or exotic to add to my collection. Its my addiction- no apologies, no excuses; just the relentless persuit of paper perfection.

My addiction: blogs. I am obsessed! They are my guilty pleasure while down here in Guatemala finishing up the last 4 months of my 27-month service here as a Peace Corps Volunteer. I follow cooking blogs, craft blogs, decorating blogs, news blogs, my friends’ blogs, green blogs, really…you name it, I follow it. My cousin, who also happens to be my best friend, recently asked me to be her Maid of Honor so now I have a good excuse to follow amazingly fun wedding blogs like this one :)

June 15, 2010 | JM Garcia (We condone this addiction! Keep up the blog reading!)

Paula Deen– my guilty addiction is the buttery goodness of her recipes. Thank goodness I’m a runner, or I might have had to kick this obsession to the curb (but don’t worry, Paula, I never really could).

Time with my grandson – its so much fun and I crave it – especially since I moved 2,000 miles away from him. His smile is so magnificent!

My addiction is salsa. I love salsa, especially fresh salsa. I put it on EVERYTHING. I love it and could just eat it with a spoon if I have no veggies or crackers. odd, I know, but that is my addiction :)

Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors and be with family and friends. My favorite thing about summer is going to the lake and enjoying a classic bar-b-que dinner outside on the porch with the ones I love :) Nothing better than a quiet lake with a party on the porch!
