Monthly Archives: January 2010

See, I told you: fun, right?  I love that Lee (in a gown designed by her groom’s mother) + Cameron celebrated their new marriage with a jump on the giant trampoline.  Talk about memorable wedding portraits!  More and more brides (including this one from Down Under) have started trading traditional multi-tiered confections for smaller, personal cakes.  (Check out Lee + Cameron’s cakes from Queen of Tarts.)  Think this is a trend worth trying in 2010?  Thanks again to our friends at The Image is Found, for sharing this Australian wedding.

Describe your wedding flowers:  Our friend, Kylie, organized them from London, and then she assembled them in the hall the night before the wedding. They were absolutely stunning! The flowers were a mix of David Austin roses, lisianthus and ranunculus.
Describe your wedding cake: We had a little bit of a last-minute panic with the cake, and our original plans had to be changed. We ended up finding a great cake shop the Tuesday before our wedding, an hour away from home. Mum and I headed out there and we chose 3 different mud cakes in different sizes with white icing. I had fresh flowers placed on the top of each cake, along with some nice ribbon around the sides, which finished off the decoration nicely.
Were there any wedding traditions or new ideas you included in the wedding?   Our new idea was having a wedding weekend festival rather than a day-long wedding. We asked everyone to join us on the Friday before the wedding for a big BBQ.  We then had a Saturday morning ceremony, a picnic lunch, then dinner.  Everyone even stayed for a breakfast BBQ on Sunday morning. There was also face painting for everyone, cricket on the oval and, most importantly, a trampoline for fun and to help with some of the amazing photos.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The entire ceremony, specifically, walking down the aisle with all of our friends and family singing “All you Need is Love” by the Beatles.  I also loved being showered in bubbles, confetti and rose petals as we joined our friends and family on the river bank after the ceremony. Cam was also very excited by how much people loved his smoked ham!
Did you write your own vows?  If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line?
We wrote our own vows, took little bits from here and there and mixed it with our own words to create what represented us best. Neither of us knew what the other was going to say until that moment. In his vows, Cam promised to love, cherish and tickle me for the rest of my life! Lee; In my vows, I secretly used one of Cam’s nicknames, ‘Spewbert’ instead of Cameron Stuart!
What’s next for you as a couple?  What are you looking forward to in the future?  We are looking forward to starting a cute little family and spending the rest of our days enjoying life together and jumping on trampolines.

Congratulations, Lee + Cameron!  Thank you for sharing your wedding with us!

Amazing couple. You have also given your guests the chance to have a great break away from work with the type of wedding you made. Congratulations. I know that preparing a wedding for the entire weekend was not that easy, but it sure paid off since you made everyone happy.

Since 2010 is all about “firsts” for Southern Weddings, we thought a fun and festive wedding from Australia (yes, really!) would be the perfect addition to our January line-up.  Can we all agree that Lee + Cameron’s wedding, photographed by the Image is Found, looks like one of the most fun weddings ever?  Bubbles?  Confetti?  Face painting?!  Lovely loose floral arrangements (designed by the couple’s dear friend, Kylie Short) were the perfect complement to the natural beauty of the Riverwood Downs where the Aussie natives swapped handwritten vows.  If you think the ceremony looks fun, I know you’ll go nuts over their reception.  (Hint: there’s a giant trampoline and, yes, the bride did jump on it in her handmade wedding gown!)

How did the two of you meet?  Tell us your story.   We were lucky enough to be introduced to each other by a mutual friend, Angela. We met one night over a glass of red wine while having a carpet picnic at Cam’s house. It turned out we lived less then 800 meters from each other. Cam mentioned he went for a bike ride some afternoons, I kept my eye out for him but I never saw him.  A couple of months later, Angela invited me to a New Year’s Eve party at none other than Cam’s house. The fireworks started well before midnight, sometime between the champagne and bad karaoke. I really thought he didn’t like me, but it turned out he was just shy! From then on, we have been inseparable.
Describe the proposal. In a word, romantic!  Cam decided well before our six-week trip around Europe that he would propose to me while we were away and had a ring made prior to our departure. He had previously spoken to both of my parents and had told his parents what he was up to. Being a traditional kind of guy, he asked my father for permission, and then it was just a matter of time to put his secret plan into action! We were in Vienna visiting some friends at the start of our trip. He had originally planned to propose at a special spot in Prague, but later said he was having too much fun to wait. Apparently, he though I was onto him, as I was supposedly acting strangely, and the ring was burning a hole in his pocket! Thankfully, he had the help of our two friends to make it all happen. We were looking at jewelry in a shop window and I made a comment that I would never put a ring “like that” on my finger. Little did I know that Cam had a ring in his pocket and, that within three hours he would be down on one knee in a beautiful Viennese square surrounded by stunning old buildings and nervously asking me to marry him. We then celebrated late into the night with our friends.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: FUN, memorable and unique.
What was the design inspiration for your wedding? A wedding festival that reflected not only our personalities, but also the way we live and experience life everyday.
What was your favorite design element of your big day? The Paper lanterns hung with colorful party lights with fairy lights strung in between.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: My favorite details were my bridal flowers and the trampoline.  Cam’s favorites were the three legs of ham he had smoked the day before for everyone to enjoy. The music was also really fantastic! We had an acoustic guitar, a three-piece jazz band and then a local singer/musician to entertain us all, well into the night.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: It was really about trying to describe what was in my head to my wonderful mother-in-law, who was kind enough to make my dress for me. It was beautiful and exactly as I imagined it.

What brand are the shoes? I’ve been looking for flats (so hard to find ones that are fancy enough) and I LOVE these!

  2. avatar Nikki reply

I agree with Amy. I NEED NEED NEED these shoes. The whole wedding is beautiful – but those shoes – swoon. I have been looking for something exactly like that – any idea where she got them?

  3. avatar Steph reply

What a beautiful and fun wedding! I am in love with the shoes, especially! Where did the bride get them? Or did she make them?

How adorable to ask the parent’s permission before he proposed.

Emily: Let’s start in the top left corner.  I want to continue to make my abode feel less and less like an apartment and more and more like a peaceful, happy, rejuvenating home.  The image below that represents love to me.  It’s such an important part of what my work and my life are about, and I want to make sure love remains at the center of my work and the center of my life — love for God, for my family, for my friends, for life itself, as cheesy as that sounds.  It’s a wonderful thing, isn’t it?  The image next to it represents a rich inner life to me.  Since middle school, one thing that’s really defined me is the fact that I’m a poet.  My senior thesis was a 100+ page collection of poetry.  Since graduating I haven’t spent much time developing that part of me, and I miss it.  I vow to be intentional about doing something about that in 2010.  The next two images (bottom right and the one above it) represent joy and weddings to me.  I’ve always found joy in weddings, and want to make sure it stays that way even though weddings are now my profession.  The top right image represents personal growth to me.  For a while now I’ve said I want to learn how to do calligraphy, but I haven’t done anything about it.  That’s going to change this year.  And lastly, I want to make sure I bring a little happy into every day, either in my own life or the lives of those around me.  Ice cream is a good representation of that, don’t you think? P.S. If this is way too wishy-washy for you, check out my 101 in 1001 progress!  My 1001 days end on September 24, 2010.

Katharine:  This year, I am making a few promises to myself; some big + and some not so big, but all integral to making me happier, healthier and awesomer (yes, I did just coin “awesomer”) in 2010.   Top to Bottom, Left to Right: Not to sound like a broken record of the Surgeon General’s warnings, but I’m actually kind of amazed at how much better I feel when I work out.  No, seriously: ever since I started sneaking into Lara’s gym after work, I’ve been walking on cloud nine.   For the past 3 weeks, I’ve dutifully hit the gym every night from 6 – 7 p.m., and I promise to make this a “must” in 2010.  Since I am someone who absolutely needs 8 (okay, 10) hours of sleep every night, I promise to follow my vigorous cardio sessions with good old-fashioned sleep.  Hanging around Emily has made me a bit more esoteric, and there’s something about that lone parasol that seems effortlessly graceful to me.  In 2010, I hope to be more graceful and centered in my daily life, a la Emily Ayer.  I also want to be more crafty and creative (see spool of yarn below), but that’s a bear I’m not sure I can tackle alone.  (Hey, Em, I’m looking at you, babe!)  And while I definitely can’t promise to cut out candy in the new year, I may consider being more adventurous with my sugar selections.   Like the girl desperately – and futilely – trying to push an oversized horse into an undersized stall, I’m going to try to let myself off the hook a little in 2010: I’ll push when I can and give up when I have to… and I’ll be okay with that.  As for my shoes (and my clothes in general), I need to start wearing them.  No, I don’t come to work nakey, but I am guilty of showing up in my sweats and PJs more often than not.  So I’m giving Whitney, our fashion guru, permission to make me wear real clothes, even if it kills me.  (You wouldn’t know it, since they rarely make an appearance, but I have a fabulous shoe collection.)  Above all, I hope my new year is filled with more books and more love, namely in the form of the playful fighting of the Ninja Bears.  (P.S. I am the small crafty one and Kyle is my partner in crime.)  I’ll see you in 2010!

Lara: This year I want to experience the world with greater awareness- taking in all the colors, tastes, smells, sunsets, and people as much as possible on my many travels ahead. As you can see in the pictures I gravitated to, I want romance, adventure, travel, surprise, color, and clarity.  I’m deeming this the year I find my voice.  I vow to invest in people who will not necessarily give back to me, but give to others.  I want to start a domino effect of positivity in everything I do.  This year, I want to continue to be closer to Emily, Katharine and Whitney and to do whatever it takes to help them grow and foster growth for us as a team.  I want to hire a full-time assistant to do the tasks that keep me from doing what I love and excel at.  I want to be more creative- paint, sing, dance and write from my heart.  I want to laugh with my friends, plant my roots in a church, and read the Bible from cover to cover by December 31st, 2010. I plan to wake up earlier, workout more, get stronger and learn how to breathe more during the work day. I will find us a new, bigger office as a start.  I’m very excited to announce we’re in the process of building a brand new Southern Weddings blogsite in 2010.  It’s going to be chock-full of revolutionary new technology and features that I just can’t wait to release!  I want to sleep more and read more books at night.  Most of all, I want to love my husband and family more deeply and invest as much energy into them as I have into my work. This year, I plan to take risks and take more than one day off… with no iPhone.  2010 is the year that I make purposeful, God-filled steps. Wishing everyone a very joyful 2010 and congrats to all of our new readers who just got engaged over the holidays!

Happy 2010 y’all!  What are you most looking forward to?

Thanks for all the inspiration! I think I need to make my own 2010 board now. I’m looking forward to getting my business off the ground, to immersing myself in creative awareness, to relaxing with my family, and to internalizing all of the advice and inspiration from the wonderful people in the wedding community who so graciously offer it up on a daily basis.Happy New Year, Southern Weddings!
