For you today, three favorite Christmas memories from the SW editors…

Lara: Christmas is by far my favorite holiday.  I love decorating, the music, the focus on God, the family time, the food… and my birthday is two days after Christmas… then New Year’s 4 days after that.  It’s a packed holiday time.  My favorite memory has to be camping out with my little brother in one of our rooms on Christmas Eve so we would both make sure to wake up at the same time.  There may have been some hunting for Christmas presents together involved as well.  Maybe.

Katharine:  It’s been a few years (okay, seven to be exact) since we’ve made the trek, but for as long as I can remember the Watermans always spent Christmas celebrating with my father’s family in Rhode Island.  (If you’ve ever set out on a ten-hour roadtrip with four children under the age of eight, you know “trek” is a serious understatement.)  Grandma Waterman and her furry poodle, Paddington Bear, would host her four children and their similarly large families for a week of baking, American Girl Doll tea parties (I had Felicity, of course!) and, if we were lucky, sledding!  While I don’t miss the “are we there yets” and countless bathroom stops on our way to Gram’s, I do miss her cozy New England saltbox.  Still, I have to admit: there’s something extra special about being home for the holidays – especially if one’s home is in Williamsburg.  (If you haven’t seen Duke of Gloucester street done up in lights, you’re missing out on some real-life Christmas magic!)

Emily: It has to be a toss-up between picking a Christmas tree and the candlelight service at my church.  We’ve always gone to the same small, family-owned farm to tromp through the rows, scouting for the fullest, the most fragrant, and the exactly-right-height spruce, and the hunt is one of my favorite parts of the season.  On the other hand, somehow it doesn’t really seem like Christmas until I’m at the Christmas Eve candlelight service.

What’s your favorite Christmas memory?

Katharine;I hope you will be coming home to Williamsburg for the holidays. Even though the snow has melted, you are right, there is nothing like Christmas in Williamsburg, VA. As for travelling to see grandparents for the holidays, I can so relate to the ten hour trip and the "are we there yets?’ My family used to travel from Connecticut to Richmond, VA for the holidays and I remember the turkey dinners, coconut cakes and awesome presents that Grandma and Pa used to have for us. May we all have cherished and precious memories of the holidays.Be blessed,MonicaWilliamsburg, VA

My favorite christmas memory is the tradition of watching "The Muppet Christmas Carol" every year on Christmas eve. We usually don’t getting around to watching the movie until late (11 or 12 ish) and it seems like a fight to stay awake, but our christmas isn’t complete without watching it. My sister and I could probably quote the movie word for word. This year is my first year away from my family (I have moved to London), but I made sure that I got a copy of "The Muppet Christmas Carol" before I left the states….MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL!

Monica, I can’t tell you how EXCITED I am to know a fellow Williamsburg native is keeping up with the SW blog! I love Williamsburg (and Virginia!) and am going to enjoy writing posts a little more now that I know someone from my hometown is reading along. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas and that our paths cross sometime in the near future. I’ll be sure to stop by the store! Love of SW Love,Katharine

Just got both "Parts" of this really neat layout your Dad just forwarded to me. and what a nice break it was from staring at tutorials about my new Windoz ‘7’. I’ve seen the pictures many times, of course, but I never get tired of seeing them again! Obviously next Summer I will be looking to my ‘puter for pictures of The Kid. If you are so inclined you could take pix of "her" with Doris, and "her" with the cats and as a grand finale, "her" with all the critters, even "her" parents. Lovely! See you Christmas Day.Love- – – – -Great-Grandma L.

Confession time: After seeing the fun and flirty shots from Jennie + Brian’s July wedding (photographed by SW sponsor Our Labor of Love), we were desperate to feature the red and pink love-fest in our November issue.  The only negative?  Jennie + Brian are not Southerners but Midwestern natives who tied the knot at The Charles Allis Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum in downtown Milwaukee.  Sadness!  But this minor detail wasn’t going to stop us from sharing their awesomely one-of-a-kind celebration with you one way or another, so we hope you enjoy today’s special two-part post!  Hey, while we’re here: take a look at the bride’s sweet tea-length Priscilla of Boston frock, her bridesmaids’ J. Crew dresses and those adorable blooms from Belle Fiori, Ltd.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story.  We met at a New Year’s Eve party thrown by a few of my good friends. Brian was their new neighbor that they graciously invited because they thought he might not know that many people yet (good job!). When he got to the party, my first thought was: I “Who is that? I’ve never seen him before!” Brian jokes that the only reason I noticed him is because he was the only person in Milwaukee that I didn’t know. While that might have been one reason, it certainly wasn’t the only one. Our friends introduced me to Brian as the one to talk to about getting to know Milwaukee better. I guess it worked!
Describe the proposal:
The proposal was perfect (does everyone say that?) in the sense that it was very us. It was a weekday and I had taken the day off because it was my 30th birthday. No one should have to work on his or her birthday. I was sleeping in, and Brian had gotten up early per usual. Around 9 in the morning, he came in the room to wake me up and wish me a happy birthday with a fresh cup of coffee.  Sigh.  I love coffee.  Then he said “I have something else for you” – and took out the blue box. Ladies, we all know what this box is. VERY EXCITING! And the he asked me to marry him! We hugged and kissed, all while trying not to spill our scalding hot coffee.
Three adjectives that describe the day are:
Lovely, personal and simple.
Tell us all the basics of your wedding!  Season, location, venue, time of day, city and state, etc.  Why did you choose these things?  Did any of these things hold special meaning for you as a couple?  Our wedding was held on a warm July evening. I had actually never thought of getting married in the summer since I was always terrified the heat would be unbearable and since no one likes a sweaty bride.  However, we didn’t want to have a terribly long engagement and summer is really quite something in Milwaukee. So summer it was! The ceremony was at 6:30 pm when the sun was still out, but not overpowering, at the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  The Villa Terrace is set atop a hill overlooking Lake Michigan.  It’s breathtaking.  Originally the residence of a successful local businessman, Lloyd Smith, it is now used as a museum and for events.  Did I mention it is  absolutely breathtaking?!
What was the design inspiration for your wedding?  Why was this design special to you as a couple?
We just wanted the wedding to be whimsical, pretty and simple. Personal only to us. I made a couple of inspiration boards (from a style standpoint) in the beginning and just went from there. We wanted to keep it small (75 guests) so we would really be able to celebrate with our closest friends and family.
Favorite design element of your big day:
Picking up things I liked and making it all come together.
What was your favorite detail of the wedding:
My hot pink Kate Spade shoes! And…my Brian.
