Monthly Archives: September 2009

Thank you to the wedding gods (a.k.a. our Art Director, Emily Ayer) for giving me another quick fix for my black-and-white wedding addiction.  Needless to say, I’m in Monday morning heaven with Peyton + Nick’s Indiana wedding at the Columbia Club from Megan W. Photography.  Classic black bowties, simple Melissa Sweet bridesmaid dresses and lovely bouquets of white roses and daisies from Posh Petals – what more could a self-proclaimed B&W lover wish for?  How about a stunning Melissa Sweet gown with sweet lace and ribbon detailing paired with drop-dead gorgeous high heels?  Check!  Come back in a bit and we can ogle this classically elegant affair some more!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story.  It’s pretty safe to say we’ve known each other forever.  Our parents are friends and have known each other for years, and Nick and I were even in the same fourth grade class!   Our families often took spring break trips together throughout school and Nick and I began dating seriously at the end of our freshman year of high school before both attending Purdue University.
What was the design inspiration for your wedding?
The rooms for our ceremony and reception at The Columbia Club were gorgeous and gave us tons of inspiration!  The classic style was not only the perfect backdrop for our wedding but also allowed us to stick with a black and white theme while adding some modern touches of green!
Tell us about finding your wedding dress:
My parents live in southern California, so my mom and I went dress shopping at The White Dress in Corona Del Mar while I was out visiting over Christmas.  The White Dress is one of the most beautiful stores I have ever seen and just screams elegant, classic bride!  I also had the best salesperson, Brielle, who made it an amazing experience. She helped me find some great dresses and made the whole process spectacular!  We found several dresses that we really liked, but when I tried my dress on we all knew it was the one!  Brielle then popped open some champagne and gave some to everyone in the store to celebrate.  It was a great day!
Three adjectives that describe the day are:
  Perfect, fun and classic.

It is because of great blogs like Southern Weddings showing off such beautiful wedding photos that the industry has grown in the area of artfullness. I so wish that the internet and wedding related things like this were totally popular when I got married but back in 1992 there wasn’t much of anything. ;) Man that makes me feel old LOL but anyway. I want to thank you for sharing with us, such beautiful and inspiring blogs. It’s a wonderful thing to be getting married in the 2000’s :)

One of my favorite parts about working at Southern Weddings is planning photo shoots.  The cover shoot for our upcoming November issue is definitely no exception. Katharine, Emily, Lara, and I have spent the past few weeks scouting locations, finding dresses and picking out models. We never complain about having dull jobs, that’s for sure!

The ever-fabulous Joy Thigpen was on the scene to work her styling magic once more.  She has the ability to turn the mundane into the extraordinary and she had some wonderful styling ideas up her sleeve for the cover shoot.  Thank you so much, Joy and florist Amy Osaba.  Special thanks to Sid Mashburn, Bridals by Lori, Scoobie West, Paloma’s Nest, Sweet Sensations, Foxgloves and Ivy, Owen Lawrence and Serenbe for their generous contributions to this shoot!

We have had the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing people in the wedding business including Eliana from By Your Side Events, Michelle from Studiowed, Jeannine from Favor Events, Ashley from Ashley Baber Events, Rebecca at Bridal Bar and so many more! These ladies went above and beyond to make our cover shoot a smashing success!

Here’s an exclusive behind-the-scenes sneak peek from Lara‘s iphone:

Best of all, the photographer is an internationally renowned success! Who? You’ll just have to guess.  -or wait till November to find out!

The excitement is growing as the release date for the next Southern Weddings print edition approaches. Get ready for more amazing real weddings, unparalleled tips from the biggest names in the wedding business, and as always, a huge dose of Southern (Weddings) hospitality!

For the grand finale of Poonam + Chirag’s wedding extravaganza, let’s all take a moment to marvel in the four-tiered and multi-layered confection that was their cake.  After being wowed by the rich reds and deep pinks of the couple’s lavish ceremony, I’m really liking the crisp, clean details (think bright whites, fresh greens and cool blues) of their reception.  The white and green centerpieces from KH Florals are a sophisticated contrast to the fun green-and-white-themed candy bar while the icy blue mood light is wonderfully sleek and modern.  Thank you again to Our Labor of Love and our very own Lara Casey for sharing their respective wedding-day genius.  Could I start the weekend on a better note?

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?  When Chirag tried to tie the mangal sutra (a black beaded necklace that the groom clasps on the bride’s neck to signify that they are now husband and wife), he couldn’t undo the clasp and spent a few minutes fumbling with it before he finally got it open.
Did you write your own vows?  If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line?  We had a traditional Hindu ceremony so didn’t exchange verbal vows.  Instead, we took seven steps around a fire together, each signifying a vow.
What’s next for you as a couple?  What are you looking forward to in the future?  We are currently living in Houston but we plan to buy a house in Austin and settle down there in the near future.  In the mean time, we’ve set a goal of jumping on a plane once a month and visiting somewhere new.

Congratulations, Poonam + Chirag!  The SW girls send all their love and luck!
